Abstract
We report an analytical model and experimental validation of the temporal dynamics of 3-level system fiber amplifiers. The model predictions show a good agreement with the measured pump power to output power and the pump power to output phase transfer functions in an EDFA pumped at 976 nm, as well as with the typical literature values for the spontaneous lifetime of the involved energy levels. The measurements show a linear relation between the effective lifetime of the meta-stable level and the output power, and a filtering of the temperature-induced phase-shift due to the quantum defect at a sufficiently high frequency modulation.

Abstract
Single-frequency laser sources at a wavelength of 1 μm are typically scaled in power with Ytterbium-doped double-clad fiber amplifiers. The main limitations are stimulated Brillouin scattering, transversal mode instabilities and, from a technical point of view, the degree of fiber integration for a rugged setup. Addressing these limitations, we propose an alternative high-power single-frequency amplifier concept based on core pumping. A nonplanar ring oscillator with 2 W of output power at 1 kHz spectral linewidth was scaled by a fiber amplifier up to a power of 158 W without any indication of stimulated Brillouin scattering-using a standard Ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber with a mode field area of only ∼100 μm2. A short active fiber length and a strong temperature gradient along the gain fiber yield to efficient suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering. For deeper understanding of the Brillouin scattering mitigation mechanism, we studied the Brillouin gain spectra with a Fabry-Perot interferometer at different output power levels of the fiber amplifier.

Abstract
We report on an ytterbium-doped monolithic fiber laser at a wavelength of 1018 nm with an output power of 200 W in continuous wave operation. The optimal parameters for setting up such a high-power fiber laser with an ytterbium-doped fiber are investigated and discussed in detail. An in-house-developed pump light stripper and a single-mode fused fiber coupler were applied to use the fiber laser for core-pumping of ytterbium-doped high-power fiber amplifiers in a monolithic setup.

Abstract
Fused-type mode-selective fiber couplers exciting the LP(11) mode are fabricated by well-defined fiber cladding reduction, pretapering and fusion. At a wavelength of 905 nm 80 % of the injected power in the single-mode fiber was transmitted in the few-mode fiber selectively exciting the LP(11) mode. The coupling behavior was experimentally investigated for the case of strong as well as weak fusion. Numerical simulations based on the super-mode coupling approach were used to estimate fabrication parameters and to discuss the modal evolution in arbitrarily fused couplers. The influence of changes in the coupler geometry on the super-modes and their modal weighting are analyzed by calculations of the effective refractive index and by modal decomposition.

Abstract
We report on theoretical and experimental investigations of gain dynamics in Raman fiber lasers in the frequency range of 1 Hz-1 MHz. An analytical solution of the problem is due to the nonlinear nature of the Raman effect not feasible. Thus, we used a numerical simulation to gain general insights. Experimentally and numerically obtained results for a Raman fiber laser emitting at 1180 nm show good qualitative agreement. We also present a potential physical interpretation of the observed dynamical properties. In addition, we report on an experimental proof-of-principle of a passive pump-to-Stokes RIN suppression scheme for the main Stokes order in cascaded Raman fiber lasers utilizing an additional parasitic Stokes order. Again, results from numerical and experimental studies of a cascaded Raman fiber laser at 1180 nm and 1240 nm show good agreement and confirm the passive pump-to-Stokes RIN suppression at 1180 nm. The dependencies between the resonator design and the parameters of the noise suppression are investigated. In addition, it is shown that the scheme can also be applied to cascaded Raman fiber lasers with more then two Stokes shifts. This opens the possibility to design for example low-noise Raman fiber lasers at 1480 nm to pump low-noise Er(3+) doped fiber amplifiers.

Abstract
We report on a high power ultrashort pulse regenerative amplifier system, entirely based on thulium-doped laser materials operating around 1.94 μm. At a repetition rate of 1 kHz the Tm:YAP regenerative amplifier emits pulse energies > 700 μJ, only limited by the damage threshold of the Tm:YAP crystal. The pulses can be compressed to 380 fs at an efficiency of 50 %. Purging of the regenerative amplifier cavity with nitrogen is necessary due to atmospheric absorptions causing long ps pedestals in the autocorrelation.

Abstract
Understanding the gain dynamics of fiber amplifiers is essential for the implementation and active stabilization of low noise amplifiers or for coherent beam combining schemes. The gain dynamics of purely Er3+ or Yb3+ doped fiber amplifiers are well studied, whereas no analysis for co-doped systems, especially for Er3+:Yb3+ co-doped fiber amplifiers has been performed, so far. Here, we analyze for the first time the gain dynamics of Er3+:Yb3+ co-doped fiber amplifiers theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that due to the energy transfer between the Yb3+ and Er3+ ions a full analytical solution is not possible. Thus, we used numerical simulations to gain further insights. Comparison of experimental and numerical results shows good qualitative agreement. In addition, we were able to determine the Yb3+-Er3+ transfer function of the energy transfer experimentally.

Abstract
Mode content measurements with a scanning ring cavity were performed in order to determine the TEM00 mode content of the output beam profile of a resonantly enhanced leakage channel fiber. The measurements were performed at 1.0 and 1.5 μm. In addition, the influence of different bending diameters as well as launching conditions has been investigated. Furthermore, a numerical simulation was used to determine the maximum theoretical TEM00 overlap, if only the fundamental fiber mode is guided. The simulation was also used to analyze how the TEM00 overlap for the case of any additional higher order fiber mode can be determined consistently.

Abstract
A high-power thulium (Tm)-doped fiber chirped-pulse amplification system emitting a record compressed average output power of 152 W and 4 MW peak power is demonstrated. This result is enabled by utilizing Tm-doped photonic crystal fibers with mode-field diameters of 35 μm, which mitigate detrimental nonlinearities, exhibit slope efficiencies of more than 50%, and allow for reaching a pump-power-limited average output power of 241 W. The high-compression efficiency has been achieved by using multilayer dielectric gratings with diffraction efficiencies higher than 98%.

Abstract
We report on the design and fabrication of an Er(3+):Yb(3+) triple clad fiber and on the power scaling of a single frequency fiber amplifier at 1.5 μm based on that fiber. In addition, we report on mode content measurements in order to reveal the overlap of the amplifier output with the TEM(00) mode. The triple clad design was used to enable high output power levels, a good slope efficiency and an excellent beam quality. A maximum single frequency output power of 61 W at 1.5 μm could be achieved with the aid of the co-seeding method, which was used to suppress parasitic processes at 1.0 μm. With a scanning ring cavity the mode content of the amplifier output was analyzed with respect to the TEM modes. For all output power levels the TEM(00) content was above 90%.

Abstract
Autologous cells can be used for a bioactivation of osteoimplants to enhance osseointegration. In this regard, adipose derived stem cells (ASCs) offer interesting perspectives in implantology because they are fast and easy to isolate. However, not all materials licensed for bone implants are equally suited for cell adhesion. Surface modifications are under investigation to promote cytocompatibility and cell growth. The presented study focused on influences of a Nitinol-nanoparticle coating on ASCs. Possible toxic effects as well as influences on the osteogenic differentiation potential of ASCs were evaluated by viability assays, scanning electron microscopy, immunofluorescence and alizarin red staining. It was previously shown that Nitinol-nanoparticles exert no cell toxic effects to ASCs either in soluble form or as surface coating. Here we could demonstrate that a Nitinol-nanoparticle surface coating enhances cell adherence and growth on Nitinol-surfaces. No negative influence on the osteogenic differentiation was observed. Nitinol-nanoparticle coatings offer new possibilities in implantology research regarding bioactivation by autologous ASCs, respectively enhancement of surface attraction to cells.

Abstract
We developed an all-fiber component with a signal feedthrough capable of combining up to 6 fiber-coupled multi-mode pump sources to a maximum pump power of 400 W at efficiencies in the range of 89 to 95%, providing the possibility of transmitting a high power signal in forward and in reverse direction. Hence, the fiber combiner can be implemented in almost any fiber laser or amplifier architecture. The complete optical design of the combiner was developed based on ray tracing simulations and confirmed by experimental results.

Abstract
The development of large tissue engineered bone remains a challenge in vitro, therefore the use of hybrid-implants might offer a bridge between tissue engineering and dense metal or ceramic implants. Especially the combination of the pseudoelastic implant material Nitinol (NiTi) with adipose derived stem cells (ASCs) opens new opportunities, as ASCs are able to differentiate osteogenically and therefore enhance osseointegration of implants. Due to limited knowledge about the effects of NiTi-structures manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM) on ASCs the study started with an evaluation of cytocompatibility followed by the investigation of the use of SLM-generated 3-dimensional NiTi-structures preseeded with ASCs as osteoimplant model. In this study we could demonstrate for the first time that osteogenic differentiation of ASCs can be induced by implant-mediated mechanical stimulation without support of osteogenic cell culture media. By use of an innovative implant design and synthesis via SLM-technique we achieved high rates of vital cells, proper osteogenic differentiation and mechanically loadable NiTi-scaffolds could be achieved.

Abstract
Nd:YAG lasers with output power levels of tens of watts, a nearly diffraction-limited beam quality, and a linearly polarized continuous wave output are commonly pumped by laser diodes at a wavelength around 808 nm, where the pump light spectrum is matched well to the absorption maximum of Nd:YAG. As a consequence, low Nd(3+)-doping concentrations of the laser crystals are required in order to minimize thermally induced stress. The use of higher Neodymium concentrations requires pump wavelengths beside the 808 nm absorption maximum and will furthermore result in changed thermo-optical behavior of the material. We present simulations and experimental results on how the doping concentration of Nd(3+) influences the fraction of pump light converted into heat.

Abstract
A current limit in power scaling of Yb-doped fiber amplifiers is the sudden onset of mode instabilities. We investigated this effect on a single-frequency Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber amplifier with a low mode instability threshold power. By measuring the overlap of the fiber output beam with the fundamental mode of an external cavity to be about 95%, we could exclude significant modal power transfer below a sharp power threshold. Furthermore, we directly measured the frequency resolved intensity noise spectra. No fluctuations in the overall output power were observed, but for the modal content different oscillation regimes were identified.

Abstract
Temperature induced refractive index changes are an important aspect in today's fiber amplifiers with high average power. For many processes, their time dependence is critical. Here, we analyze the impact of radial heat diffusion on the optical phase. We modulated the pump power in a 10 W amplifier and measured the frequency response of the optical phase. We compared the result with the calculated frequency response of the temperature in the fiber core, which shows the same characteristics. Additionally, we analyzed the influence of fiber parameters on the temperature dynamics.

Abstract
High power single frequency, single mode, linearly polarized laser output at the 1 μm regime is in demand for the interferometric gravitational wave detectors (GWDs). A robust single frequency solid state master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) is a promising candidate for such applications. We present a single frequency solid state multistage MOPA system delivering 177 W of linearly polarized output power at 1 μm with 83.5% TEM(00) mode content.

Abstract
An ultrafast thulium-doped fiber laser with stretched-pulse operation has been realized and investigated. The passively mode-locked oscillator emitted 119 fs pulses at a peak wavelength of 1912 nm. A normal-dispersion fiber with a high numerical aperture and small core was used for intracavity dispersion management and external compression. Numerical simulations were performed and are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract
Gain dynamics and refractive index changes in fiber amplifiers are important in many areas. For example, the knowledge of the frequency responses for seed and pump power modulation are required to actively stabilize low noise fiber amplifiers. Slow and fast light via coherent population oscillations rely on the change of group index to delay or advance pulses, and refractive index changes in fiber amplifiers are a possible explanation for mode fluctuations in high power fiber amplifiers. Here, we analyze the frequency dependent influence of seed and pump power modulation on the fiber amplifier output power and the refractive index. We explain the observed power and refractive index modulation with an analytic model originally developed for telecom amplifiers and discuss a further simplification of the model.

Abstract
We developed a fused fiber coupler (FFC) capable of multiplexing wavelengths in the range of 795 nm and 2 μm. A simple 2D simulation model to calculate the pretaper length for matching the propagation constants in the coupling region was established. Based on the numerical data, we fabricated an asymmetric FFC consisting of two different fibers with single-mode guidance for the respective wavelength, achieving a transmission of 90% in the signal fiber for both wavelengths. In order to demonstrate the application, we integrated the FFC into a core pumped thulium-doped fiber amplifier.

Abstract
We experimentally investigated the influence of amplified spontaneous emission within the Brillouin gain bandwidth on the Brillouin scattering of a single-frequency signal. The experiments were performed for the case of artificial ASE injected in backward direction into a passive fiber, as well as in forward direction of a low-power fiber amplifier. A significant influence could be observed, when the ASE was counter-propagating to the signal. Injecting 160.6 nW of ASE within the Brillouin gain bandwidth led to a decrease of about 3 dB of the SBS-threshold of an approximately 335 m long passive fiber from about 80 mW to less than 40 mW. At a fixed signal power of 81 mW the backscattered power and the power in the Brillouin scattered Stokes maximum increased by a factor of 19.
