Abstract
The equivalence of the Pseudophase and related models, frequently used in the interpretation of kinetic data under restricted geometry conditions, and the well known Brönsted's equation, used in the interpretation of the reactivity in homogeneous media, has been proven in several cases. The generalisation in relation to other non-kinetic properties such as reaction free energy and redox potentials has also been considered.

Abstract
The T2K experiment measures muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance in accelerator-produced neutrino and antineutrino beams. With an exposure of 14.7(7.6)×10^{20} protons on target in the neutrino (antineutrino) mode, 89 ν_{e} candidates and seven anti-ν_{e} candidates are observed, while 67.5 and 9.0 are expected for δ_{CP}=0 and normal mass ordering. The obtained 2σ confidence interval for the CP-violating phase, δ_{CP}, does not include the CP-conserving cases (δ_{CP}=0, π). The best-fit values of other parameters are sin^{2}θ_{23}=0.526_{-0.036}^{+0.032} and Δm_{32}^{2}=2.463_{-0.070}^{+0.071}×10^{-3} eV^{2}/c^{4}.

Abstract
Due to the aeration system, biological reactors are the most energy-consuming facilities of convectional WWTPs. Many biological reactors work under intermittent aeration regime; the optimization of the aeration process (air diffuser layout, air flow rate per diffuser, aeration length …) is necessary to ensure an efficient performance; satisfying the effluent requirements with the minimum energy consumption. This work develops a CFD modelling of an activated sludge reactor (ASR) which works under intermittent aeration regime. The model considers the fluid dynamic and biological processes within the ASR. The biological simulation, which is transient, takes into account the intermittent aeration regime. The CFD modelling is employed for the selection of the aeration system of an ASR. Two different aeration configurations are simulated. The model evaluates the aeration power consumption necessary to satisfy the effluent requirements. An improvement of 2.8% in terms of energy consumption is achieved by modifying the air diffuser layout. An analysis of the influence of the air flow rate per diffuser on the ASR performance is carried out. The results show a reduction of 14.5% in the energy consumption of the aeration system when the air flow rate per diffuser is reduced. The model provides an insight into the aeration inefficiencies produced within ASRs.

An improved IVM method for cumulus-oocyte complexes from small follicles in polycystic ovary syndrome patients enhances oocyte competence and embryo yield. Hum Reprod 2018; 32:2056-2068. Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Are meiotic and developmental competence of human oocytes from small (2-8 mm) antral follicles improved by applying an optimized IVM method involving a prematuration step in presence of C-Type Natriuretic Peptide (CNP) followed by a maturation step in presence of FSH and Amphiregulin (AREG)? SUMMARY ANSWER A strategy involving prematuration culture (PMC) in the presence of CNP followed by IVM using FSH + AREG increases oocyte maturation potential leading to a higher availability of Day 3 embryos and good-quality blastocysts for single embryo transfer. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY IVM is a minimal-stimulation ART with reduced hormone-related side effects and risks for the patients, but the approach is not widely used because of an efficiency gap compared to conventional ART. In vitro systems that enhance synchronization of nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation before the meiotic trigger are crucial to optimize human IVM systems. However, previous PMC attempts have failed in sustaining cumulus-oocyte connections throughout the culture period, which prohibited a normal cumulus-oocyte communication and precluded an adequate response by the cumulus-oocyte complex (COC) to the meiotic trigger. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION A first prospective study involved sibling oocytes from a group of 15 patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to evaluate effects of a new IVM culture method on oocyte nuclear maturation and their downstream developmental competence. A second prospective study in an additional series of 15 women with polycystic ovaries characterized and fine-tuned the culture conditions. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Fifteen women with PCOS (according to Rotterdam criteria) underwent IVM treatment after 3-5 days of highly purified human menopausal gonadotropin (HP-hMG) stimulation and no human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) trigger before oocyte retrieval. A first study was designed with sibling oocytes to prospectively evaluate the impact of an IVM culture method: 24 h PMC with CNP + 30 h IVM with FSH and AREG, on embryo yield, in comparison to the standard (30 h) IVM clinical protocol (Group I, n = 15). A second prospective study was performed in 15 women with polycystic ovaries, to characterize and optimize the PMC conditions (Group II, n = 15). The latter study involved the evaluation of oocyte meiotic arrest, the preservation of cumulus-oocyte transzonal projections (TZPs), the patterns of oocyte chromatin configuration and cumulus cells apoptosis following the 24 and 46 h PMC. Furthermore, oocyte developmental potential following PMC (24 and 46 h) + IVM was also evaluated. The first 20 good-quality blastocysts from PMC followed by IVM were analysed by next generation sequencing to evaluate their aneuploidy rate. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE PMC in presence of CNP followed by IVM using FSH and AREG increased the meiotic maturation rate per COC to 70%, which is significantly higher than routine standard IVM (49%; P ≤ 0.001). Hence, with the new system the proportion of COCs yielding transferable Day 3 embryos and good-quality blastocysts increased compared to routine standard IVM (from 23 to 43%; P ≤ 0.001 and from 8 to 18%; P ≤ 0.01, respectively). CNP was able to prevent meiosis resumption for up to 46 h. After PMC, COCs had preserved cumulus-oocyte TZPs. The blastocysts obtained after PMC + IVM did not show increased aneuploidy rates as compared to blastocysts from conventional ART. LIMITATIONS REASONS FOR CAUTION The novel IVM approach in PCOS patients was tested in oocytes derived from small antral follicles which have an intrinsically low developmental potential. Validation of the system would be required for COCs from different (larger) follicular sizes, which may involve further adjustment of PMC conditions. Furthermore, considering that this is a novel strategy in human IVM treatment, its global efficiency needs to be confirmed in large prospective randomized controlled trials. The further application in infertile patients without PCOS, e.g. cancer patients, remains to be evaluated. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS The findings of this pilot study suggest that the efficiency gap between IVM and conventional IVF can be reduced by fine-tuning of the culture methods. This novel strategy opens new perspectives for safe and patient-friendly ART in patients with PCOS. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This randomized clinical trial evaluated the effect of 35% hydrogen peroxide in comparison with 37% carbamide peroxide in a nonvital bleaching technique of "walking bleaching" (four sessions of treatment) on periodontal markers: nuclear factor kappa B-ligand (RANK-L-process of root resorption marker) and interleukin 1β (IL-1β-inflammatory response marker). METHODS AND MATERIALS Fifty volunteers presenting with discoloration of nonvital teeth and endodontic treatment in good condition participated. Fifty teeth were randomly divided into two study groups according to bleaching gel: HP = 35% hydrogen peroxide (n=25) and 37% carbamide peroxide (n=25). Nonvital bleaching was performed with a walking bleaching technique consisting of four sessions of bleach application. Gingival crevicular fluid samples were taken in order to quantify the RANK-L and IL-1β levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Samples were obtained from six periodontal sites for each bleached tooth: three vestibular and three palatine (mesial, middle, and distal) at seven time periods: baseline, after each of the four sessions of nonvital bleaching, at one week, and at one month after nonvital bleaching. Tooth color variations were analyzed in each session by VITA Bleachedguide 3D-MASTER (ΔSGU). RESULTS Significant increments in the RANK-L and IL-1β levels were detected in each evaluated time compared with baseline ( p<0.05); however, no differences were detected between hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide on increments of the biomarkers studied. The change of color was effective for both nonvital bleaching therapies ( p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Nonvital bleaching induced a significant increment in the RANK-L and IL-1β levels in periodontal tissues around bleached, nonvital teeth.

Abstract
Two basic lattice distortions permeate the structural phase diagram of oxide perovskites: antiferrodistortive (AFD) rotations and tilts of the oxygen octahedral network and polar ferroelectric modes. With some notable exceptions, these two order parameters rarely coexist in a bulk crystal, and understanding their competition is a lively area of active research. Here we demonstrate, by using the LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3} system as a test case, that quantum confinement can be a viable tool to shift the balance between AFD and polar modes and selectively stabilize one of the two phases. By combining scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and first-principles-based models, we find a crossover between a bulklike LaAlO_{3} structure where AFD rotations prevail, to a strongly polar state with no AFD tilts at a thickness of approximately three unit cells; therefore, in addition to the celebrated electronic reconstruction, our work unveils a second critical thickness, related not to the electronic properties but to the structural ones. We discuss the implications of these findings, both for the specifics of the LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3} system and for the general quest towards nanoscale control of material properties.

Abstract
Piscirickettsia salmonis is an intracellular bacterium and the causative agent of Piscirickettsiosis, a disease responsible for considerable mortalities in the Chilean salmon farming industry. Currently, P. salmonis protein translocation across the membrane and the mechanisms by which virulence factors are delivered to host cells are poorly understood. However, it is known that Gram-negative bacteria possess several mechanisms that transport proteins to the periplasmic and extracellular compartments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expressional changes of several genes in the P. salmonis Sec-dependent pathway and type 4B secretion system during in vitro infection. Genes homologous and the main proteins belonging to Sec-dependent pathway and Type 4 Dot/Icm secretion system were found in the genome and proteome of P. salmonis AUSTRAL-005 strain. Additionally, several genes of these protein transport mechanisms were overexpressed during in vitro P. salmonis infection in SHK-1 cell line. The obtained data indicate that the Sec-dependent pathway and Type 4B secretion system are biologically active during P. salmonis infection. These mechanisms could contribute to the recycling of proteins into the inner and outer bacterial membrane and in translocate virulence factors to infected cell, which would favor the structural integrity and virulence of this bacterium.

Abstract
We report here the O K-edge x-ray absorption spectra of hexagonal and orthorhombic YMnO3 thin films, aiming at comparing the changes in the Mn 3d bands as well as the role of Y 4d-O 2p hybridization. The experimental results were analyzed using first principles (GGA) band structure calculations. The spectra present clear differences in the Mn 3d bands, which are attributed to changes in the Mn-O coordination and symmetry. A strong Y 4d-O 2p hybridization is observed in both the hexagonal and orthorhombic films, and its possible role on the occurrence of the observed ferroelectricity is discussed.

Abstract
T2K reports its first results in the search for CP violation in neutrino oscillations using appearance and disappearance channels for neutrino- and antineutrino-mode beams. The data include all runs from January 2010 to May 2016 and comprise 7.482×10^{20} protons on target in neutrino mode, which yielded in the far detector 32 e-like and 135 μ-like events, and 7.471×10^{20} protons on target in antineutrino mode, which yielded 4 e-like and 66 μ-like events. Reactor measurements of sin^{2}2θ_{13} have been used as an additional constraint. The one-dimensional confidence interval at 90% for the phase δ_{CP} spans the range (-3.13, -0.39) for normal mass ordering. The CP conservation hypothesis (δ_{CP}=0, π) is excluded at 90% C.L.

Abstract
An important factor affecting the success in the setting of related haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the graft-versus-leukemia effect mediated by natural killer (NK) cells when the donor displays NK alloreactivity versus the recipient. NK cell function is regulated by killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) and it has been described that donor KIR genotype influences transplantation outcome. This has led to a requirement of laboratories to have a quality assurance program for validation and control of their KIR genotyping methods. The goal of the 1st and 2nd Spanish KIR Genotyping Workshops was to provide an external proficiency testing program in KIR genotyping for Spanish immunology and transplant laboratories. These workshops were conducted during the years 2014-2016 and consisted of 17 participating laboratories typing a set of 20 samples. The presence/absence of 16 mandatory KIR loci (2DL1, 2DL2, 2DL3, 2DL4, 2DL5, 2DS1, 2DS2, 2DS3, 2DS4, 2DS5, 2DP1, 3DL1, 3DL2, 3DL3, 3DS1, and 3DP1) was evaluated per sample. Methods for KIR genotyping included polymerase chain reaction with the use of sequence-specific primers and sequence-specific oligoprobes. Consensus typing was reached in all samples, and the performance of laboratories in external proficiency testing was satisfactory in all cases. The polymorphism detected in the small sample studied in both workshops is indicative of an ample variety of KIR gene profiles in the Spanish population.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyse the correlations between the eye lens dose estimates performed with dosimeters placed next to the eyes of paediatric interventional cardiologists working with a biplane system, the personal dose equivalent measured on the thorax and the patient dose. METHODS The eye lens dose was estimated in terms of Hp(0.07) on a monthly basis, placing optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters (OSLDs) on goggles. The Hp(0.07) personal dose equivalent was measured over aprons with whole-body OSLDs. Data on patient dose as recorded by the kerma-area product (PKA) were collected using an automatic dose management system. The 2 paediatric cardiologists working in the facility were involved in the study, and 222 interventions in a 1-year period were evaluated. The ceiling-suspended screen was often disregarded during interventions. RESULTS The annual eye lens doses estimated on goggles were 4.13±0.93 and 4.98±1.28mSv. Over the aprons, the doses obtained were 10.83±0.99 and 11.97±1.44mSv. The correlation between the goggles and the apron dose was R2=0.89, with a ratio of 0.38. The correlation with the patient dose was R2=0.40, with a ratio of 1.79μSvGy-1cm-2. The dose per procedure obtained over the aprons was 102±16μSv, and on goggles 40±9μSv. The eye lens dose normalized to PKA was 2.21±0.58μSvGy-1cm-2. CONCLUSIONS Measurements of personal dose equivalent over the paediatric cardiologist's apron are useful to estimate eye lens dose levels if no radiation protection devices are typically used.

Abstract
Ultrahigh energy cosmic ray air showers probe particle physics at energies beyond the reach of accelerators. Here we introduce a new method to test hadronic interaction models without relying on the absolute energy calibration, and apply it to events with primary energy 6-16 EeV (E_{CM}=110-170 TeV), whose longitudinal development and lateral distribution were simultaneously measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory. The average hadronic shower is 1.33±0.16 (1.61±0.21) times larger than predicted using the leading LHC-tuned models EPOS-LHC (QGSJetII-04), with a corresponding excess of muons.

Abstract
We report the first measurement of the flux-averaged cross section for charged current coherent π^{+} production on carbon for neutrino energies less than 1.5 GeV, and with a restriction on the final state phase space volume in the T2K near detector, ND280. Comparisons are made with predictions from the Rein-Sehgal coherent production model and the model by Alvarez-Ruso et al., the latter representing the first implementation of an instance of the new class of microscopic coherent models in a neutrino interaction Monte Carlo event generator. We observe a clear event excess above background, disagreeing with the null results reported by K2K and SciBooNE in a similar neutrino energy region. The measured flux-averaged cross sections are below those predicted by both the Rein-Sehgal and Alvarez-Ruso et al.

Abstract
Fluid dynamic behaviour plays an important role in wastewater treatment. An efficient treatment requires the inexistence of certain hydraulic problems such as dead zones or short-circuiting flows. Residence time distribution (RTD) analysis is an excellent technique for detecting these inefficiencies. However, many wastewater treatment installations include water or sludge recycling systems, which prevent us from carrying out a conventional tracer pulse experiment to obtain the RTD curve of the installation. This paper develops an RTD analysis of an activated sludge reactor with recycling system. A tracer experiment in the reactor is carried out. Three analytical models, derived from the conventional pulse model, are proposed to obtain the RTD curve of the reactor. An analysis of the results is made, studying which model is the most suitable for each situation. This paper is useful to analyse the hydraulic efficiency of reactors with recycling systems.

Abstract
We measure the energy emitted by extensive air showers in the form of radio emission in the frequency range from 30 to 80 MHz. Exploiting the accurate energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory, we obtain a radiation energy of 15.8±0.7(stat)±6.7(syst) MeV for cosmic rays with an energy of 1 EeV arriving perpendicularly to a geomagnetic field of 0.24 G, scaling quadratically with the cosmic-ray energy. A comparison with predictions from state-of-the-art first-principles calculations shows agreement with our measurement. The radiation energy provides direct access to the calorimetric energy in the electromagnetic cascade of extensive air showers. Comparison with our result thus allows the direct calibration of any cosmic-ray radio detector against the well-established energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory.

Abstract
T2K reports its first measurements of the parameters governing the disappearance of ν[over ¯]_{μ} in an off-axis beam due to flavor change induced by neutrino oscillations. The quasimonochromatic ν[over ¯]_{μ} beam, produced with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV at J-PARC, is observed at the far detector Super-Kamiokande, 295 km away, where the ν[over ¯]_{μ} survival probability is expected to be minimal. Using a data set corresponding to 4.01×10^{20} protons on target, 34 fully contained μ-like events were observed. The best-fit oscillation parameters are sin^{2}(θ[over ¯]_{23})=0.45 and |Δm[over ¯]_{32}^{2}|=2.51×10^{-3} eV^{2} with 68% confidence intervals of 0.38-0.64 and 2.26-2.80×10^{-3} eV^{2}, respectively. These results are in agreement with existing antineutrino parameter measurements and also with the ν_{μ} disappearance parameters measured by T2K.

Clinical and economic impact of urinary tract infections caused by ESBL-producing Escherichia coli requiring hospitalization: A matched cohort study. J Infect 2015; 71:667-74. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the clinical and economic impact of urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli requiring hospitalization. METHODS Matched cohort study including adults with UTI caused by ESBL-producing E. coli admitted to a tertiary care hospital in Barcelona, Spain, between August 2010 and July 2013. Demographic, clinical and economic data were analyzed. RESULTS One hundred and twenty episodes of UTI were studied: 60 due to ESBL-producing E. coli and 60 due to non-ESBL-producing E. coli. Bivariate analysis showed that prior antimicrobial treatment (p = 0.007) and ESBL production (p < 0.001) were related to clinical failure during the first 7 days. Multivariate analysis selected ESBL as the sole risk factor for clinical failure (p = 0.002). Regarding the economic impact of infections caused by ESBL-producing E. coli, an ESBL-producing infection cost more than a non-ESBL-producing E. coli infection (mean €4980 vs. €2612). Looking at hospital expenses separately, the total pharmacy costs and antibiotic costs of ESBL infections were considerably higher than for non-ESBL infections (p < 0.001), as was the need for outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT) and its related costs. Multivariate analysis performed for the higher costs of UTI episodes found statistically significant differences for males (p = 0.004), chronic renal failure (p = 0.025), ESBL production (p = 0.008) and OPAT (p = 0.009). CONCLUSION UTIs caused by EBSL-producing E. coli requiring hospital admission are associated with worse clinical and economic outcomes.

Abstract
Energy-dependent patterns in the arrival directions of cosmic rays are searched for using data of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We investigate local regions around the highest-energy cosmic rays with [Formula: see text] eV by analyzing cosmic rays with energies above [Formula: see text] eV arriving within an angular separation of approximately 15[Formula: see text]. We characterize the energy distributions inside these regions by two independent methods, one searching for angular dependence of energy-energy correlations and one searching for collimation of energy along the local system of principal axes of the energy distribution. No significant patterns are found with this analysis. The comparison of these measurements with astrophysical scenarios can therefore be used to obtain constraints on related model parameters such as strength of cosmic-ray deflection and density of point sources.
