Abstract
OBJECTIVE The goal of this article is to present the experience of a new liver transplant team. MATERIALS AND METHODS This review includes all patients who received a liver transplant between March 15, 2000 and March 15, 2003. RESULTS We performed 87 transplantations on 84 patients; 39 were females and 45 were males of average age 43.6 years, including 6 children. The majority of the patients were from Colombia with time on the waiting list of less than 1 month. The average donor age was 26.7 years. The preservation solutions included Wisconsin, HTK-Brettschneider (Custodiol), and Corpaúl (similar to Henn-Ross). In this study, 95.4% were whole livers, with 97.7% using the piggyback method. We placed 23 arterial grafts and 2 venous grafts for vascular reconstructions; 95.4% were duct-to-duct anastomosis (95.4%). Among the cohort, 8.3% experienced acute rejection and 1.2% experienced chronic rejection. Two patients required retransplantation due to hepatic artery thrombosis with biliary tree necrosis. CONCLUSIONS We consider that we have passed the crisis of beginning a new program with a reduction in postoperative complications and improving patient and graft survival. At present, we are a center that performs liver transplantations in adults and children, with a good organ donation culture in our city that allows us to offer a waiting time on the list less than one month. Neither a veno-venous bypass nor a T-tube were necessary for our cases. We also have developed a new, less expensive form of perfusing the liver in the donor.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of our study was to evaluate short- and long-term results of transplants from cadaver donors who have died of poisoning by various substances. MATERIALS AND METHODS The actuarial survival rate of organs from intoxicated donors was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS Among the 507 donors between January 1998 and December 2002, 5 (0.98%) had a cause of brain death of poisoning, namely, organo-phosphates (n = 2), methanol (n = 1), cyanide (n = 1) and acetylsalicilic acid(n = 1), from whom were procured 10 kidneys, 1 liver, 2 corneas, and 1 set of bones. The follow up for patients receiving solid organs was 15.2 months (range, 0-48 months). At 3 months, 90% of kidneys had normal function. No delayed graft function rejection episodes or major complications were reported in any recipient. None showed evidence of acute or chronic poisoning. Two died, 1 early mortality was due to anesthetic complications and the other at 17 months to an unknown cause. Actuarial kidney survival rates were 90% and 80% at 12 and 24 months, respectively. The liver recipient was well at the end of follow up. CONCLUSION Using organs of poisoned donors is feasible with comparable graft survival rates to other recipient.

Abstract
In the title compound, C(28)H(38)N(4)O(6), the 4-aryl substituent occupies a pseudo-axial position approximately orthogonal to the plane of the dihydropyridine ring [88.1 (3) degrees ]. The dihydropyridine ring adopts a flattened boat conformation. The H atom on the pyridine N atom is involved in a bifurcated intramolecular hydrogen bond, the acceptors being the N atoms of the two piperidylmethyl groups [N.N 2.629 (4) and 2.695 (4) A].

Abstract
Substance P (SP) analogues including [d-Arg(1),d-Trp(5,7,9), Leu(11)]SP are broad spectrum neuropeptide antagonists and potential anticancer agents, but their mechanism of action is not fully understood. Here, we examined the mechanism of action of [d-Arg(1), d-Trp(5,7,9),Leu(11)]SP as an inhibitor of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR)-mediated signal transduction and cellular DNA synthesis in Swiss 3T3 cells. Addition of [d-Arg(1),d-Trp(5,7,9), Leu(11)]SP, at 10 micrometer, caused a striking rightward shift in the dose-response curves of DNA synthesis induced by bombesin, bradykinin, or vasopressin and markedly inhibited the activation of p42(mapk) (ERK-2) and p44(mapk) (ERK-1) induced by these GPCR agonists. In addition, this SP analogue also prevented the protein kinase C-dependent activation of protein kinase D induced by these agonists. [d-Arg(1),d-Trp(5,7,9),Leu(11)]SP, at a concentration (10 micrometer) that inhibited these G(q)-mediated events, also prevented GPCR agonist-induced responses mediated through the G proteins of the G(12) subfamily. These include bombesin-induced assembly of focal adhesions, formation of parallel arrays of actin stress fibers, increase in the tyrosine phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK), p130(Cas), and paxillin, and formation of a complex between FAK and Src. We conclude that [d-Arg(1),d-Trp(5,7,9),Leu(11)]SP acts as a mitogenic antagonist of neuropeptide GPCRs blocking signal transduction via both G(q) and G(12).

Abstract
Prostaglandins, produced in response to mitogens and cytokines, are potent modulators of gastrointestinal physiology and pathophysiology. We investigated modulation of Prostaglandin synthase 2 (PGS-2) expression by the gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) receptor in Swiss 3T3 cells. PGS-2 mRNA expression in Swiss 3T3 cells was determined by Northern blot analysis. PGS-2 protein expression in Swiss 3T3 cells was measured by Western blot analysis. GRP caused a transient induction of PGS-2 mRNA in Swiss 3T3 cells that resulted in GRP-dependent expression of PGS-2 protein. Transcriptional activation of PGS-2 by GRP was independent of de novo protein synthesis and was not affected by pertussis toxin. Comparison of signaling pathways used by PMA or EGF to those used by GRP showed that PGS-2 induction by GRP increased under conditions that inhibit PKC activity. Dexamethasone, which blocks PMA and EGF induction of PGS-2, also inhibited GRP-induced accumulation of PGS-2 mRNA. These results show that PGS-2 expression in Swiss 3T3 cells is not only controlled by PKC and receptor tyrosine kinase pathways but also by G-protein coupled receptor signaling pathways.

Abstract
A series of experiments were performed in order to investigate whether estimates of handgrip force could be derived with fair accuracy from surface EMG levels recorded on the finger flexors of the forearm, taking into account the position of the wrist in the flexion-extension plane and in the ulnar-radial deviation plane. Handgrip forces (on a JAMAR dynamometer) and corresponding surface EMG levels (on the finger flexors of the forearm) were recorded for 20 subjects in 11 postures of the wrist and for 30% and 70% of the MVC in neutral posture. A mathematical empirical model was developed using multiple non-linear regression analysis. Although quite simple, it provides very reliable results, the correlation coefficient between predicted and observed forces being 0.895. Its use must, however, be restricted to work situations where: (a) the hand efforts are of the same type and involve the same muscles as those exerted on the dynamometer; (b) the hand is in neutral pro-supination; and (c) no voluntary effort is exerted by the wrist flexors except for maintaining the wrist posture.

Abstract
Serial ascites and plasma volumes were measured during diuresis in nine patients with ascites caused by peritoneal carcinomatosis, four patients with chylous malignant ascites, and three patients with portal hypertension-related ascites caused by massive hepatic metastases. Oral diuretics were given to achieve an adequate natriuresis on a sodium-restricted diet. During the study period (7.8 +/- 3.2 days), patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis and chylous ascites lost 0.49 +/- 0.31 and 0.51 +/- 0.42 kg/day in weight, respectively, with negligible change in ascites volumes (-0.03 +/- 0.11 and 0.02 +/- 0.09 L/day). Patients with ascites caused by massive hepatic metastasis lost 1.06 +/- 0.15 kg/day in weight (P = 0.01 for massive hepatic metastasis vs. peritoneal carcinomatosis) and 0.23 +/- 0.13 L/day of ascites (P less than 0.05 vs. other groups). Plasma volume changes were not significantly different among the three groups. Patients with edema (9/16) had a greater natriuresis and daily weight loss. Three patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis and one with chylous ascites developed renal dysfunction or symptomatic hypotension. No patient with massive hepatic metastasis developed these complications. In patients with ascites caused by peritoneal carcinomatosis or chylous malignant ascites there is no mobilization of ascites, whereas in patients with massive hepatic metastasis, ascites may be mobilized with diuretics.
