Abstract
OBJECTIVES Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common and fatal opportunistic co-infection among HIV-infected individuals. While TB-associated mortality predominantly occurs in the first 90 days after admission, such a correlation remains unclear in HIV/TB co-infected patients. Thus, we aimed to investigate the 90-day mortality and associated risk factors among HIV/TB co-infected patients in China. METHODS Adult patients with HIV and a newly confirmed TB diagnosis admitted to the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center between September 2009 and August 2017 were enrolled. Clinical and laboratory characteristics, key treatments and outcomes were collected retrospectively. The associations between different factors and early mortality were analysed. RESULTS Of the 485 laboratory-confirmed HIV/TB patients [median (range) age = 39 (19-79) years], 413 (85.15%) were male. Diagnosis was confirmed by culture, pathology and acid-fast bacilli smear alone in 362 (74.6%), 6 (1.2%) and 117 (24.1%) patients, respectively. Multiple drug-/rifampin-resistant TB was detected in 21 (5.8%) of the 367 patients with a positive culture. Rifampin or rifabutin was administered to 402 (82.9%) patients. Additionally, 66 (13.6%) and 86 (17.7%) died within 90 days and 1 year of admission, respectively. Of the 64 TB-related deaths, 59 (92.2%) occurred within 90 days of admission. In Cox regression, central nervous system (CNS) TB [odds ratio (OR) = 2.49, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.46-4.23, P < 0.001], no antiretroviral therapy (ART) within 3 months after admission (OR = 11, 95% CI: 6.4-18.9, P < 0.001), and plasma albumin level < 25 g/L (OR = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.07-3.40, P = 0.021) were associated with early death. CONCLUSIONS Tuberculosis co-infection was prevalent and fatal in HIV-infected patients, with most deaths occurring within 90 days of admission. Early mortality was associated with CNS-TB, no ART, and serum albumin level < 25 g/L.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics of cases of novel coronavirus pneumonia and a preliminary study to explore the relationship between different clinical classification and liver damage. Methods: Consecutively confirmed novel coronavirus infection cases admitted to seven designated hospitals during January 23, 2020 to February 8, 2020 were included. Clinical classification (mild, moderate, severe, and critical) was carried out according to the diagnosis and treatment program of novel coronavirus pneumonia (Trial Fifth Edition) issued by the National Health Commission. The research data were analyzed using SPSS19.0 statistical software. Quantitative data were expressed as median (interquartile range), and qualitative data were expressed as frequency and rate. Results: 32 confirmed cases that met the inclusion criteria were included. 28 cases were of mild or moderate type (87.50%), and four cases (12.50%) of severe or critical type. Four cases (12.5%) were combined with one underlying disease (bronchial asthma, coronary heart disease, malignant tumor, chronic kidney disease), and one case (3.13%) was simultaneously combined with high blood pressure and malignant tumor. The results of laboratory examination showed that the alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), albumin (ALB), and total bilirubin (TBil) for entire cohort were 26.98 (16.88 ~ 46.09) U/L and 24.75 (18.71 ~ 31.79) U/L, 39.00 (36.20 ~ 44.20) g/L and 16.40 (11.34 ~ 21.15) μmol/L, respectively. ALT, AST, ALB and TBil of the mild or moderate subgroups were 22.75 (16.31 ~ 37.25) U/L, 23.63 (18.71 ~ 26.50) U/L, 39.70 (36.50 ~ 46.10) g/L, and 15.95 (11.34 ~ 20.83) μmol/L, respectively. ALT, AST, ALB and TBil of the severe or critical subgroups were 60.25 (40.88 ~ 68.90) U/L, 37.00 (20.88 ~ 64.45) U/L, 35.75 (28.68 ~ 42.00) g/L, and 20.50 (11.28 ~ 25.00) μmol/L, respectively. Conclusion: The results of this multicenter retrospective study suggests that novel coronavirus pneumonia combined with liver damage is more likely to be caused by adverse drug reactions and systemic inflammation in severe patients receiving medical treatment. Therefore, liver function monitoring and evaluation should be strengthened during the treatment of such patients.

Abstract
Objective: To establish mouse models of Candidemia, and investigates statistically significant polypeptide peaks to provide auxiliary diagnosis of this disease. Methods: A total of 170 specific pathogen free adult male ICR mice with body mass of 27-30 g were completely randomly divided into Candida albicans infection group (n=80), Candida parapsilosis infection group (n=80) and the normal control group (n=10), and the two kinds of Candidemia mouse models were established via tail vein injection. The serum samples were analyzed by Matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time of flight mass spectrometry and relevant software, and the polypeptide peaks with significant differences were screened to establish diagnostic models. Results: A total of 65 differential polypeptide peaks were obtained compared with the Candida albicans infection group and the normal control group. Combined with m/z 1 100.4, 1 581.0, 3 808.0 as differential polypeptide peaks to established the diagnostic model, the sensitivity was 95.24%(40/42), the specificity was 90.63%(29/32), the accuracy rate was 93.24%(69/74), and the AUC value of the ROC curve was 0.972(95%CI: 0.941-1.000). A total of 73 differential polypeptide peaks were obtained compared with Candida parapsilosis infection group and the normal control group. Combined with m/z 1 433.2, 1 148.5, 4 093.5, 4 522.2, 8 140.9, 8 234.6 as differential polypeptide peaks to established the diagnostic model, the sensitivity was 95%(38/40), the specificity was 81.25%(26/32), the accuracy rate was 88.89%(64/72), and the AUC value of the ROC curve was 0.953(95%CI: 0.903-1.000). A total of 78 differential polypeptide peaks were obtained compared with Candida albicans infection group and Candida parapsilosis infection group. Combined with m/z 2 736.9, 8 091.5, 8 153.7 as differential polypeptide peaks to established the diagnostic model, the accuracy of distinguishing C. albicans infection from C. parapsilosis infection was 98.78%(81/82). Conclusions: Successfully screened the differential polypeptides and established the related diagnostic models. Which is helpful to find serum biomarkers for the auxiliary diagnosis of Candidemia, and provides a basis for the early diagnosis and the rational use of drugs.

Abstract
Thermoelectric effects are more sensitive and promising probes to topological properties of emergent materials, but much less addressed compared to other physical properties. We study the thermoelectric effects of ZrTe_{5} in a magnetic field. The presence of the nontrivial electrons leads to the anomalous Nernst effect and quasilinear field dependence of thermopower below the quantum limit. In the strong-field quantum limit, both the thermopower and Nernst signal exhibit exotic peaks. At higher magnetic fields, the Nernst signal has a sign reversal at a critical field where the thermopower approaches zero. We propose that these anomalous behaviors can be attributed to the gap closing of the zeroth Landau bands in topological materials with the band inversion. Our understanding to the anomalous thermoelectric properties in ZrTe_{5} opens a new avenue for exploring Dirac physics in topological materials.

Abstract
We report a fuel-dependent reactor electron antineutrino (ν[over ¯]_{e}) yield using six 2.8 GW_{th} reactors in the Hanbit nuclear power plant complex, Yonggwang, Korea. The analysis uses 850 666 ν[over ¯]_{e} candidate events with a background fraction of 2.0% acquired through inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions in the near detector for 1807.9 live days from August 2011 to February 2018. Based on multiple fuel cycles, we observe a fuel ^{235}U dependent variation of measured IBD yields with a slope of (1.51±0.23)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission and measure a total average IBD yield of (5.84±0.13)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission. The hypothesis of no fuel-dependent IBD yield is ruled out at 6.6σ. The observed IBD yield variation over ^{235}U isotope fraction does not show significant deviation from the Huber-Mueller (HM) prediction at 1.3 σ. The measured fuel-dependent variation determines IBD yields of (6.15±0.19)×10^{-43} and (4.18±0.26)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission for two dominant fuel isotopes ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu, respectively. The measured IBD yield per ^{235}U fission shows the largest deficit relative to the HM prediction. Reevaluation of the ^{235}U IBD yield per fission may mostly solve the reactor antineutrino anomaly (RAA) while ^{239}Pu is not completely ruled out as a possible contributor to the anomaly. We also report a 2.9 σ correlation between the fractional change of the 5 MeV excess and the reactor fuel isotope fraction of ^{235}U.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with multi-organ involvement and several typical autoantibodies. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are multipotent stem cells with low immunogenicity that can differentiate into various kinds of cells, such as bone, cartilage, fat and skin tissue. MSC have immunomodulatory and reparative properties through interactions with immune cells. MSC have been used in the treatment of refractory SLE and lupus nephritis patients for more than ten years. Most clinical studies were self-controlled studies and only a few were randomized controlled trials. The objective of this study was to use meta-analysis method to evaluate the efficacy and safety of MSC treatment in SLE patients. METHODS The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Wanfang and VIP databases were searched for published randomized controlled trials and self-controlled studies before June 1, 2018. The search terms included the Chinese and English versions of mesenchymal stem cells, Mesenchymal Stromal Cells [Mesh], systemic lupus erythematosus, lupus, Lupus Erythematosus, Systemic [Mesh]. Two authors independently screened the literatures, assessed the quality of the studies and collected data according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The endpoints were the SLE disease activity index, 24 h urine protein and complement C3. Meta-analysis was performed with the Revman 5.3 software according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standard. RESULTS Eight studies involving 213 patients were included and three of the studies were randomized controlled trials with 66 patients involved. The MSC group showed that the SLE disease activity index decreased significantly [standard mean difference (SMD)=-1.76, 95% confidence interval (CI): -2.00 to -1.51, P<0.001), the 24 h urine protein decreased significantly (SMD=-1.74, 95%CI: -2.46 to -1.03, P<0.001), as well as the complement C3 increased significantly (SMD=1.28, 95%CI: 0.93 to 1.62, P<0.001). Four studies reported adverse events including fever, diarrhea and headache during the infusion. CONCLUSION Current evidences showed that MSC could improve the disease activity, proteinuria and hypocomplementemia in SLE patients. Large scale and high-quality randomized controlled trials are required to validate the efficacy and safety of MSC treatment in SLE patients.

Abstract
Whether anatomic resection (AR) achieves better outcomes than nonanatomic resection (NAR) in patients with primary intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is unclear. Data were retrieved for all consecutive patients who underwent liver resection for primary ICC from January 2007 to July 2017. The prognoses of the patients without direct invasion to contiguous organs or extrahepatic metastasis who underwent AR or NAR were compared. 85 patients underwent AR, and 65 patients underwent NAR. operation time were slightly decreased in the NAR group. The risk of Clavien-Dindo classification (CDC) IV in the AR group was significant higher than that in the NAR group. Cox regression analysis showed lymph node metastasis and adjuvant therapy were significant prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS), respectively. After 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM), 29 pairs of patients were compared. The survival curves showed the NAR group had slightly improved DFS and OS than the AR group before and after matching. Thus, we conclude NAR was not inferior to AR in improving the survival outcomes for patients with primary solitary ICC lesions without direct invasion to contiguous organs or extrahepatic metastasis. Furthermore, patients may benefit from NAR.

Abstract
The RENO experiment reports more precisely measured values of θ_{13} and |Δm_{ee}^{2}| using ∼2200 live days of data. The amplitude and frequency of reactor electron antineutrino (ν[over ¯]_{e}) oscillation are measured by comparing the prompt signal spectra obtained from two identical near and far detectors. In the period between August 2011 and February 2018, the far (near) detector observed 103 212 (850 666) ν[over ¯]_{e} candidate events with a background fraction of 4.8% (2.0%). A clear energy and baseline dependent disappearance of reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} is observed in the deficit of the measured number of ν[over ¯]_{e}. Based on the measured far-to-near ratio of prompt spectra, we obtain sin^{2}2θ_{13}=0.0896±0.0048(stat)±0.0047(syst) and |Δm_{ee}^{2}|=[2.68±0.12(stat)±0.07(syst)]×10^{-3} eV^{2}.

Abstract
Objective: To compare and analyze the clinical characteristics and laboratory parameters of central nervous system (CNS) infection caused by different Gram-stained bacteria after craniocerebral surgery, and to provide a preliminary basis for early anti-infection treatment to reduce the use of extended-spectrum antibiotics and the generation of resistant strains. Methods: A single center retrospective study was conducted to investigate the clinical data of patients with intracranial infection after craniocerebral surgery from January 2012 to December 2016 in PLA general hospital. The general conditions, clinical features, laboratory parameters, antibiotic treatments and prognosis were analyzed. Results: A toal of 813 cases of CNS infection after craniocerebral surgery were found during the 5-year period, with an incidence rate of 5.43% (813/14 986). The positive rate of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)culture was 9.72% (79/813). According to the criteria, 71 cases were included in the study. Among all the cases, 64.8% (46/71) of which were Gram-positive bacteria (G(+) ) and 35.2% (25/71) were identified as Gram-negative bacteria (G(-)). The duration between surgery and meningitis events, as well as the period of antibiotic treatment for G(+) bacteria group were 5.0 (4.0, 6.0) days and (18.3±6.8) days, which were shorter than those of the G(-) bacteria group 9.0(7.0, 11.0) days and (29.2±9.9) days (Z=-6.184, t=-5.245, both P<0.01) , and the differences were statistically significant. The serum procalcitonin concentration in the G(+) group was lower than that in G(-) group [1.02(0.83, 1.27)μg/L vs 2.68(1.97, 5.07)μg/L, Z=-5.719, P<0.01]. The cerebrospinal fluid glucose content was higher than that of G(-) bacteria group[(2.13±1.30) mmol/L vs (1.09±0.95) mmol/L, t=3.512, P<0.01]. The protein level was lower than that of G(-) bacteria group [(1 615.93±848.83) mg/L vs (2 480.60±1 105.28) mg/L, t=-3.679, P<0.01]. Serum C-reactive protein concentrations in the two groups did not show any statistical significance [(96.2±46.1) mg/L vs (117.8±46.3) mg/L, t=-1.884, P>0.05]. In addition, the mortality rate of the G(-) bacteria group was 16.0% (4/25), and 0 in G(+) bacteria group. Conclusion: The time of onset of intracranial infection, serum PCT concentration, and cerebrospinal fluid glucose and protein content caused by Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria are found to be significantly different, and these findings could serve as a preliminary guide for the selection of antibiotics in early experiential anti-infective treatments without the etiology report.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ingenol mebutate gel is a novel, field-directed topical treatment for actinic keratosis (AK). Most pivotal studies have targeted Western populations. No clinical study has been conducted to investigate its efficacy and safety in Asian populations. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ingenol mebutate gel for treating AK of face/scalp and trunk/extremities in a large Asian (Korean) population. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this multicentre, open-label, interventional, parallel-group, prospective phase IV study (PERFECT, trial registration no.: NCT02716714), the eligible patients were allocated into either the face/scalp or the trunk/extremities group, according to their selected treatment area location. After application of ingenol mebutate gel, the participants were followed up for 6 months. The primary efficacy endpoint was complete clearance (CC) of AK lesions in the selected treatment area at day 57. Quality of life was evaluated using Skindex-29. Safety endpoints included local skin responses, scar, pigmentation, pain and adverse events. RESULTS In total, 78·1% [95% confidence interval (CI) 66·86-86·92%] of subjects had CC at day 57, with 76·6% (95% CI 64·31-86·25%) in the face/scalp group and 88·9% (95% CI 51·75-99·72%) in the trunk/extremities group. Among them, CC was sustained in 88·9% (48 of 54, 95% CI 77·37-95·81%) at month 6. The local skin responses significantly increased 1 day after the treatment compared with baseline, and decreased afterwards. Among the total subjects, 7·8% (6 of 77) had hyperpigmentation on the application area. Scars were not reported. CONCLUSIONS Ingenol mebutate is effective for the treatment of AK in Asians, with tolerable safety profiles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of using liver allografts from donors who are younger than 14 years at the time of donation after cardiac death (DCD) liver transplantation in terms of early allograft dysfunction (EAD) and graft survival is undefined. To determine if adults undergoing DCD liver transplantation who receive a graft from a donor age younger than or equal to 13 years have similar outcomes to recipients of organs from older than 18-year-old donors. METHODS Records from adult patients undergoing DCD liver transplantation between March 2012 and December 2015 who received whole grafts from donors after cardiac death were reviewed. Patients with donors younger than or equal to 13 years (group 1) and older than 18 years (group 2) were compared for EAD rates, hepatic artery thrombosis (HAT), and graft survival. RESULTS Records of 60 DCD liver transplantation patients were analyzed. The 90-day and 1-year graft survival rate of both groups was 90% versus 96% (P = .427) and 80% versus 84% (P = .668), respectively. The EAD rates of groups 1 and 2 were 30% versus 34% (P = .806). The incidence of HAT was 20% in group 1 compared with 12% in group 2 (P = .610). Also, 0.7% < graft to recipient weight ratio (GRWR) <0.8% was also usable for pediatric donor to adult recipients. CONCLUSIONS Whole liver grafts from donors younger than or equal to 13 years can potentially be used in selected size-matched (GRWR >0.7%) DCD adult recipients.

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life (SADL).Method:Ninety adult hearing aid users were evaluated with Chinese version of the SADL.Result:①Reliability:Cronbach's α score of overall SADL score was 0.814 and the four subdomains were 0.543-0.824. ②Validity: The correlation coefficients between overall SADL score and the four subdomains were 0.514-0.826(all P<0.01).There were weak or no correlations among the four subdomains. The evaluation of content validity by expertreview showed the questionnaire had good content validity. SADL total scores in bilateral hearing aid userswere significantly higher than those in unilateral hearing aid users (t=2.192,P<0.05).Conclusion:The Chinese version of the SADL meets many psychometric criteria of a robust instrument. It possesses appropriate validity and good reliability, and can be used to measure the outcome for adult hearing aid users in China.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the clinical value of two quantitative methods in analyzing endobronchial ultrasound real-time elastography (EBUS-RTE) images for evaluating intrathoracic lymph nodes. Methods: From January 2014 to April 2014, EBUS-RTE examination was performed in patients who received EBUS-TBNA examination in Shanghai Chest Hospital. Each intrathoracic lymph node had a selected EBUS-RTE image. Stiff area ratio and mean hue value of region of interest (ROI) in each image were calculated respectively. The final diagnosis of lymph node was based on the pathologic/microbiologic results of EBUS-TBNA, pathologic/microbiologic results of other examinations and clinical following-up. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy were evaluated for distinguishing malignant and benign lesions. Results: Fifty-six patients and 68 lymph nodes were enrolled in this study, of which 35 lymph nodes were malignant and 33 lymph nodes were benign. The stiff area ratio and mean hue value of benign and malignant lesions were 0.32±0.29, 0.62±0.20 and 109.99±28.13, 141.62±17.52, respectively, and statistical differences were found in both of those two methods (t=-5.14, P<0.01; t=-5.53, P<0.01). The area under curves was 0.813, 0.814 in stiff area ratio and mean hue value, respectively. The optimal diagnostic cut-off value of stiff area ratio was 0.48, and the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy were 82.86%, 81.82%, 82.86%, 81.82% and 82.35%, respectively. The optimal diagnostic cut-off value of mean hue value was 126.28, and the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy were 85.71%, 75.76%, 78.95%, 83.33% and 80.88%, respectively. Conclusion: Both the stiff area ratio and mean hue value methods can be used for analyzing EBUS-RTE images quantitatively, having the value of differentiating benign and malignant intrathoracic lymph nodes, and the stiff area ratio is better than the mean hue value between the two methods.

Abstract
Objective: To clarify the clinicopathologic features of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients survived more than 10 years after radical hepatectomy. Methods: Two hundreds and fifty-two patients who underwent curative resection for HCC between January 1999 and March 2006 at Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University were included.There were 217 male cases and 35 female cases aging from 17 to 82 years with median age of (53.8±10.5)years. Followed by March 31 2016, clinicopathologic factors in 10-year survivors and patients who died within 10 years were compared by χ(2) test, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards model and the prognostic factors affecting survival were identified. Results: All patients were followed-up for 4.0 to 205.7 months with median time of 53.4 months. The 10-year overall survival rate was 26%, there were 62 cases(26.2%) who survived for more than 10 years after initial hepatectomy. In survival >10-year group, the paitents with ALT<40 U/L, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase<64 U/L, albumin≥35 g/L, without liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension, Child-Pugh grade A, no blood transfusion, AFP≤20 μg/L, tumor size ≤5.0 cm, single tumor, high differentiation, TNM stage Ⅰ and TACE negative after resection were more than the patients in survival <10-year group (P<0.05). In multivariate analysis, Child-Pugh grade A, the tumor size ≤5.0 cm and TACE negative after resection were favorable independent factors associated with 10-year survival (P<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, Child-Pugh grade A, tumor size ≤5.0 cm and TACE negative after resection at initial hepatectomy might be biologically favorable conditions for patients surviving more than 10 years.

Abstract
Objective:The purpose of this study was to inquiry into the application of mandarin acceptable noise level(M-ANL) and client oriented scale of improvement in evaluation of hearing aid fitting for presbyacusis. Method:Thirty-two adults with presbycusis who used the hearing aid for the first time were selected for the study. M-ANL tests were done prior to the hearing aid fitting. Six weeks later, these patients were asked to fill in questionnaire of client oriented scale of improvement (COSI).The subjects were divided into 3 groups according to the time of hearing aid using in their daily lives: less than one hour per day, 1 to 4 hours per day and more than 4 hours per day. The relativity of M-ANL and the score of COSI were compared. Result:①There were significant differences of the M-ANL among 3 groups(P<0.05); ②The scores of COSI of group 1(less than one hour per day) was lower than group 2(1 to 4 hours per day), while there were no significant differences between the scores of group 2(1 to 4 hours per day) and group 3(more than 4 hours per day); ③There was good correlation between the score of M-ANL and COSI. Conclusion:M-ANL can forecast the satisfaction of hearing aids fitting. And COSI can play an effective role in outcome measurement.

Abstract
We test the common assumption that organic carbon (OC) storage occurs on sand-sized soil particles only after the OC storage capacity on silt- and clay-sized particles is saturated. Soil samples from a Brookston clay loam in Southwestern Ontario were analysed for the OC concentrations in bulk soil, and on the clay (<2 μm), silt (2–53 μm) and sand (53–2000 μm) particle size fractions. The OC concentrations in bulk soil ranged from 4.7 to 70.8 g C kg−1 soil. The OC concentrations on all three particle size fractions were significantly related to the OC concentration of bulk soil. However, OC concentration increased slowly toward an apparent maximum on silt and clay, but this maximum was far greater than the maximum predicted by established C sequestration models. In addition, significant increases in OC associated with sand occurred when the bulk soil OC concentration exceeded 30 g C kg−1, but this increase occurred when the OC concentration on silt + clay was still far below the predicted storage capacity for silt and clay fractions. Since the OC concentrations in all fractions of Brookston clay loam soil continued to increase with increasing C (bulk soil OC content) input, we concluded that the concept of OC storage capacity requires further investigation.

Abstract
The goal of the current study was to investigate the effects of pollution on aquatic organisms in the Yongcheng coal mine subsidence area. Crucian carp (Carassius auratus) were collected from Yongcheng natural fishpond (experimental group) and Tianmu Lake (control group), and the spleens were isolated for analysis. Subsequently, histological changes, DNA damage, and antioxidant enzyme activity were assessed. The result showed that there were more vacuoles, widened blood sinus cavities, increased partial dot necrosis, and a larger number of brown-yellow nodules in splenic sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin in the experimental group than in the control group. Additionally, it was not easy to distinguish red pulp from white pulp in the experimental group. The antioxidant enzyme activity in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P < 0.01). Comet assay results showed varying degrees of tailing and DNA chain breaks in the experimental group, and further analysis demonstrated that the tail length and tail moment were significantly increased compared to those in the control group (P < 0.01). These results suggest that the spleen antioxidant defense system was severely damaged in crucian carp from the Yongcheng coal mine subsidence area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Liver resection for intermediate (Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage B) hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains controversial. This study attempted to demonstrate the effectiveness of preresection transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) as a selection criterion for BCLC-B HCC. METHODS The study included patients with BCLC-B HCC who underwent liver resection after TACE. The tumour response to TACE was evaluated according to the modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours (mRECIST). Patients with a complete or partial response comprised the responder group, whereas those with stable or progressive disease were classified as non-responders. RESULTS A total of 242 patients were included. After between one and eight sessions of TACE, 141 patients were included in the responder group: 37 patients (15·3 per cent) who achieved a complete response and 104 who had a partial response. The cumulative 1-, 3- and 5-year overall survival rates were 97·2, 88·7 and 75·2 per cent respectively in the responder group, compared with 90·1, 67·3 and 53·5 per cent among 101 non-responders (P < 0·001). Tumour-free survival rates were also better among responders than non-responders (P < 0·001). In multivariable analysis, independent predictors of overall and tumour-free survival were response to TACE and microvascular invasion (all P < 0·001). CONCLUSION mRECIST may represent selection criterion for intermediate HCC for surgical treatment.

Abstract
To study the effect of fructus polygoni orentalis extract (EFPO) on liver regeneration and proliferation of bone marrow cells on rat model of partial hepatectomy, EFPO was extracted, and 60 adult male Wistar rats were divided randomly into 6 experimental groups. Rats were treated with intergastric administration (ig) with EFPO daily. All rats were euthanized 7 days after administration, and the livers and bone marrow cells were collected. The levels of taxifolin and quercetin in EFPO were 1.238 and 0.381 mg/g, respectively. EFPO decreased the proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression of the regenerating liver. Obvious tissue damage was observed in the EFPO groups, such as a widened hepatic sinusoid cavity, several enlarged nuclei, slightly ballooning degeneration, and spotty and focal necrosis as compared to the control group. Additionally, 1.8 and 3.6 g/kg EFPO significantly inhibited proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression in bone marrows cells (P < 0.05), and induced gathering of these cells during the GO/G1 phases (P < 0.05). The karyocyte and myelosis of bone marrows cells clearly decreased, and mature erythrocytes increased (P < 0.05) in the EFPO groups. Additionally, 3.6 g/kg EFPO induced active proliferation, while the sham operation and control groups showed apparent active myelo-proliferation. The maximum dosage of mice ig EFPO was 148.8 g/kg. Our results indicate that EFPO inhibits rat liver regeneration and bone marrow cell proliferation in regenerating rat liver.

Abstract
Presence of individual fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) in meconium is considered to be a reliable biomarker of prenatal alcohol exposure, and their concentration has been found to be linearly associated with poor postnatal development, supporting the widely extended idea that ethanol is a non-threshold teratogen. However, a growing number of epidemiological studies have consistently found a lack of adverse short- and long-term fetal outcomes at low exposure levels. We therefore aimed to investigate the relationship between the concentration of individual FAEEs and prenatal alcohol exposure in meconium samples collected within the first 6 to 12?h after birth from 182 babies born to abstainer mothers and from 54 babies born to women who self-reported either light or moderate alcohol ingestion in the second or third trimester of pregnancy. In most cases, the individual FAEE concentrations were negligible and not significantly different (P >0.05) between exposed and control babies. The concentrations appeared to increase linearly with the dose only in the few babies born to mothers who reported >3 drinks/week. These results provide evidence that the correlation between prenatal alcohol exposure and individual FAEE concentrations in meconium is non-linear shape, with a threshold probably at 3 drinks/week.

Abstract
Dental caries remains one of the most common infectious diseases of humankind, which develops slowly throughout life, affecting children, adolescents, and adults. A vaccine against caries is urgently needed. We previously developed recombinant flagellin as a mucosal adjuvant for anti-Streptococcus mutans vaccines by nasal immunization. Furthermore, we demonstrated a fusion protein strategy that combined flagellin and the target surface adhesion protein (PAc) in a single construct. This construct enhanced specific IgA responses in oral fluids and provided improved prophylactic protection against caries. In the present study, we observed prolonged progression of dental caries in rats after S. mutans Ingbritt challenge. In addition, we observed a therapeutic effect of the flagellin-PAc fusion protein (KF-rPAc) against dental caries as a mucosal vaccine with a new immunization protocol. The present study demonstrated that KF-rPAc by nasal immunization can promote PAc-specific systemic and mucosal antibody responses and inhibit dental caries progression efficiently after the implant of S. mutans into the oral cavity of the rats. The rats immunized with KF-rPAc exhibited 53.9% caries reduction compared with the sham-immunized rats. Our data support the concept of administration of KF-rPAc to humans after infection and even caries that has begun to alleviate caries progression. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that KF-rPAc could be used as an anticaries therapeutic mucosal vaccine.

Abstract
Eucalyptus spp., most of which are native to Australia, are one of the world's most commonly planted forestry crops, and have been widely planted in the tropics and subtropics. Eucalyptus trees are distributed in more than 600 counties in 19 provinces/regions throughout China, especially in the southern regions of the country (1). From April of 2013 to May of 2014, eucalyptus trees were noted to be wilting and dying rapidly in Kunming, Yunnan Province (25°02' N, 102°42' E), southwest China. Symptomatic trees typically have many wilted or dead leaves hanging throughout the tree or on some major branches, sometimes followed by death of the whole tree. Dark brown to black discoloration can be seen in the woody xylem, and elongated cankers were also present on some affected trees. A fungus was consistently isolated from the leaves and cankers when symptomatic tissue was incubated between two slices of fresh carrot root. Spore masses were removed from the apices of perithecia, transferred to malt extract agar medium (MEA), and incubated at 25°C. Perithecia developed on the medium, and were black, globose, 212.5 to 242.4 × 207.5 to 254.2 μm, and possessed a long black neck (952.3 to 1,303.3 μm). Ascospores had the typical "hat" morphology and were 4.3 to 5.2 × 3.0 to 3.8 μm. Cylindrical endoconidia (11.2 to 22.2 × 3.9 to 6.1 μm) were found. Chlamydospores produced on media were ovoid and smooth, and were 7.8 to 9.7 × 9.9 to 12.8 μm. Chains of barrel-shaped conidia were not found. PCR amplification and sequencing of the ITS region of rDNA were carried out for one isolate, E2-2, using the procedures of Thorpe et al. (3). Analysis of ITS sequence data (GenBank Accession No. KJ511481) showed that the isolates were 99% homologous to the isolate of C. fimbriata from diseased Colocasia esculenta in Cuba, China, and Hawaii (AY526304 to 06) by BLAST analysis. Thus, the fungus was identified as C. fimbriata based on morphological and molecular characteristics. Pathogenicity tests were made on 1-year-old E. grandis seedlings as follows. A conidial suspension of each isolate was diluted to 106 conidia/ml, and 0.2 ml was injected into wounds on three petioles on each of five healthy plants of E. grandis, and control seedlings were injected with sterile water that had been placed on MEA plates. The seedlings were incubated at 25°C in moist chambers. After 3 days, all inoculated E. grandis plants showed dark brown to black discoloration in the leaf axils. After 5 days, leaf wilting was present. C. fimbriata was re-isolated from all inoculated symptomatic tissue. No symptoms were visible in the control plants and no fungus was isolated from them. Ceratocystis wilt was first observed in eucalyptus in 1997 in the state of Bahia. This was followed by a report of C. fimbriata causing wilt of E. grandis in the Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Uruguay (2). Chen et al. reported two species of Ceratocystis, C. acaciivora and a previously undescribed species C. chinaeucensis, from eucalyptus plantations in Guangdong Province in China (1).
