Novel H2S sensing mechanism derived from the formation of oligomeric sulfide capping the surface of gold nanourchins

A gold nanourchin (AuNU) probe with a novel sensing mechanism for monitoring H2S was developed as a feasible colorimetric sensor. In this study, AuNUs that are selectively responsive to H2S were fabricated in the presence of trisodium citrate and 1,4-hydroquinone using a seed-mediated approach. Upon exposure of the AuNU solution to H2S, the hydrosulfide ions (HS-) in the solution are converted into oligomeric sulfides by 1,4-hydroquinone used as a reducing agent during the synthesis of AuNUs. The oligomeric sulfides formed in the AuNU solution upon the addition of H2S were found to coat the surface of the AuNUs, introducing a blue shift in absorption accompanied by a color change in the solution from sky blue to light green. This colorimetric alteration by the capping of oligomeric sulfides on the surface of AuNUs is unique compared to well-known color change mechanisms, such as aggregation, etching, or growth of nanoparticles. The novel H2S sensing mechanism of the AuNUs was characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and atom probe tomography. H2S was reliably monitored with two calibration curves comprising two sections with different slopes according to the low (0.3-15 μM) and high (15.0-300 μM) concentration range using the optimized AuNU probe, and a detection limit of 0.29 μM was obtained in tap water.

In Situ Interfacial-Assembly Perovskite Quantum Dot via Marangoni and Capillary Convection Manipulation for Robust Luminescence

In solid substrates, colloidal solutions produce irregular deposits on the surface by Marangoni flow and capillary flow during evaporation. Reportedly, perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) as a colloidal solution have irregular surfaces based on a similar principle as the coffee ring effect in QD systems when droplets evaporate from the substrate. Given that this issue is due to the direction of Marangoni and capillary flows, the substrate is tilted to change the direction of the flows. The appropriate angle is determined by controlling the angle of the substrate so that the two flows circulate similarly; this method is called "assembly-coating". Herein, we compare the PL intensity before and after the thermal evaporation of the thin films prepared by conventional and assembly-coating. Moreover, by characterizing the diode device (hole-only space charge limited current) for each coating process, the charge carrier characteristics are investigated in detail. Therefore, we suggest a facile strategy to obtain a uniform surface and thermal evaporative stability using colloidal solutions. This strategy is effective in designing surface uniformity and light-emitting layers for colloidal solution deposition and assembly.

Significant Reductions in Secondary Aerosols after the Three-Year Action Plan in Beijing Summer

Air quality in China has continuously improved during the Three-Year Action Plan (2018-2020); however, the changes in aerosol composition, properties, and sources in Beijing summer remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted real-time measurements of aerosol composition in five summers from 2018 to 2022 along with WRF-Community Multiscale Air Quality simulations to characterize the changes in aerosol chemistry and the roles of meteorology and emission reductions. Largely different from winter, secondary inorganic aerosol and photochemical-related secondary organic aerosol (SOA) showed significant decreases by 55-67% in summer, and the most decreases occurred in 2021. Comparatively, the decreases in the primary aerosol species and gaseous precursors were comparably small. While decreased atmospheric oxidation capacity as indicated by ozone changes played an important role in changing SOA composition, the large decrease in aerosol liquid water and small increase in particle acidity were critical for nitrate changes by decreasing gas-particle partitioning substantially (∼28%). Analysis of meteorological influences demonstrated clear and similar transitions in aerosol composition and formation mechanisms at a relative humidity of 50-60% in five summers. Model simulations revealed that emission controls played the decisive role in reducing sulfate, primary OA, and anthropogenic SOA during the Three-Year Action Plan, while meteorology affected more nitrate and biogenic SOA.

Proteogenomic Analysis of Human Uterine Cervical Cancer (UCC) Reveals Treatment-Resistant Subtypes of UCC

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Locally advanced uterine cervical cancer (UCC) is treated by radiotherapy with concurrent chemotherapy, but heterogenous treatment responses are frequently observed. To better optimize therapeutic options based on molecular signatures, we performed proteogenomic analysis of UCC.

MATERIALS/METHODS

UCC tissue and blood samples were collected from patients who underwent primary radiotherapy ± chemotherapy at the National Cancer Center (NCC) in Korea from July 2004 to March 2020. Most samples were obtained via biopsy. Genomic DNA for WES was isolated from frozen biopsy tumor tissues and peripheral blood buffy-coat of patients. Both global proteome and phosphoproteome were analyzed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Whole exome sequencing, RNA sequencing, global proteomics and phosphoproteomics were performed using 253, 337, and 147 cervical cancer samples, respectively. Patient-derived xenograft were established using intratongue implantation using 2 primary cell lines from sub3 and sub5, and flow cytometric analysis was performed.

RESULTS

Fourteen significantly mutated genes (SMG) were found in our study cohort which include 5 newly identified SMGs. Mutation-phosphorylation analysis revealed association with apoptosis and actin cytoskeleton pathway. Proteogenomic analysis defined 6 molecular subtypes of UCC. Of those, 3 subtypes (i.e., Sub3, Sub5 and Sub6) were associated with treatment-resistant phenotypes. The cell-type deconvolution analysis suggested activated stroma with activation of cancer-associated fibroblast in Sub 3, while Sub5 showed low levels of activated stroma and high levels of myeloid immune cells. FACS analysis of UCC mouse models established from these 2 radio-resistant primary cell lines showed high component of PDGFRA+CAF infiltration in Sub 3, and high level of PVR+CD45+ immune cells mainly composed of polymorphonuclear myeloid-derived suppressor cells (PMN-MDSC) in Sub5. For Sub6, genes and/or protein signatures represented mucin-related processes (e.g., mucin glycosylation/sugar metabolism), which are linked to metastasis-associated Tn antigen production.

CONCLUSION

The proteogenomic analysis thus suggests potential targets for radiotherapy-resistant subtypes of UCC; secretory factors from activated stroma and cancer-associated fibroblast (Sub3); RHOA signaling, PVR, and PMN-MDSCs (Sub5), and keratin/chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan and Tn antigen production (Sub6). Our study shows the importance of proteogenomic analysis in unveiling the subtype specific molecular pathways of UCC that are beyond reach by genomic data alone. The validity of our molecular pathway and cellular signatures linking these pathways should be further validated through detailed functional experiments and in larger UCC cohorts.

Validation of a deep learning-based software for automated analysis of T2 mapping in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging

Background

The reliability and diagnostic performance of deep learning (DL)-based automated T2 measurements on T2 map of 3.0-T cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using multi-institutional datasets have not been investigated. We aimed to evaluate the performance of a DL-based software for measuring automated T2 values from 3.0-T cardiac MRI obtained at two centers.

Methods

Eighty-three subjects were retrospectively enrolled from two centers (42 healthy subjects and 41 patients with myocarditis) to validate a commercial DL-based software that was trained to segment the left ventricular myocardium and measure T2 values on T2 mapping sequences. Manual reference T2 values by two experienced radiologists and those calculated by the DL-based software were obtained. The segmentation performance of the DL-based software and the non-inferiority of automated T2 values were assessed compared with the manual reference standard per segment level. The software's performance in detecting elevated T2 values was assessed by calculating the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy per segment.

Results

The average Dice similarity coefficient for segmentation of myocardium on T2 maps was 0.844. The automated T2 values were non-inferior to the manual reference T2 values on a per-segment analysis (45.35 vs. 44.32 ms). The DL-based software exhibited good performance (sensitivity: 83.6-92.8%; specificity: 82.5-92.0%; accuracy: 82.7-92.2%) in detecting elevated T2 values.

Conclusions

The DL-based software for automated T2 map analysis yields non-inferior measurements at the per-segment level and good performance for detecting myocardial segments with elevated T2 values compared with manual analysis.

Uncertainty Evaluation for the Quantification of Urinary Amphetamine and 4-Hydroxyamphetamine Using Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry: Comparison of the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement Approach and the Monte Carlo Method with R

Estimating the measurement uncertainty (MU) is becoming increasingly mandatory in analytical toxicology. This study evaluates the uncertainty in the quantitative determination of urinary amphetamine (AP) and 4-hydroxyamphetamine (4HA) using a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method based on the dilute-and-shoot approach. Urine sample dilution, preparation of calibrators, calibration curve, and method repeatability were identified as the sources of uncertainty. To evaluate the MU, the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) approach and the Monte Carlo method (MCM) were compared using the R programming language. The MCM afforded a smaller coverage interval for both AP (94.83, 104.74) and 4HA (10.52, 12.14) than that produced by the GUM (AP (92.06, 107.41) and 4HA (10.21, 12.45)). The GUM approach offers an underestimated coverage interval for Type A evaluation, whereas the MCM provides an exact coverage interval under an abnormal probability distribution of the measurand. The MCM is useful in complex settings where the measurand is combined with numerous distributions because it is generated from the uncertainties of input quantities based on the propagation of the distribution. Therefore, the MCM is more practical than the GUM for evaluating the MU of urinary AP and 4HA concentrations using LC-MS/MS.

Hierarchical Heterogeneous NiFe Layered Double Hydroxides for Efficient Solar-Powered Water Oxidation

Highly active, stable, and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts are urgently needed for the realization of large-scale industrial hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) stand out as one of the most promising nonprecious electrocatalysts worth pursuing. Here, a hierarchical heterogeneous Ni2+Fe3+@Ni2+Fe2+ LDH was successfully synthesized via a sequential electrodeposition technique using separate electrolytes containing iron precursors with different valence states (Fe2+, Fe3+). The underlying highly crystalline Ni2+Fe2+ LDH nanosheet array provides a large surface for the catalytically more active Ni2+Fe3+ LDH overlayer with low crystallinity. The resulting Ni2+Fe3+@Ni2+Fe2+ LDH demonstrates excellent OER activity with overpotentials of 218 and 265 mV to reach current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, as well as good long-term stability for 30 h even at a high current density of 500 mA cm-2. In an overall water splitting, an electrolyzer using an electrocatalyst of Sn4P3/CoP2 as a cathode requires only a cell voltage of 1.55 V at 10 mA cm-2. Furthermore, the solar-powered overall water splitting system consisting of our electrolyzer and a perovskite/Si tandem solar cell exhibits a high solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 15.3%.

Nivolumab after Induction Chemotherapy in Previously Treated Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Patients with Low PD-L1 Expression

This study aimed to investigate whether cyclophosphamide (C) and adriamycin (A) induction therapy (IT) prior to nivolumab could enhance the efficacy of nivolumab in previously treated patients with non-squamous (NSQ) non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with less than 10% programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression. Twenty-two enrolled patients received four cycles of CA-IT every 3 weeks. Nivolumab was given 360 mg every 3 weeks from the second cycle and 480 mg every 4 weeks after four cycles of CA-IT. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were 2.4 months and 11.6 months, respectively. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting revealed the lowest ratio of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) to CD8+T-cells in the responders. Proteomic analysis identified a consistent upregulation of extracellular matrix-receptor interactions and phagosome pathways in the responders. Among the differentially expressed proteins, the transferrin receptor protein (TFRC) was higher in the responders before treatment (fold change > 1.2). TFRC validation with an independent cohort showed the prognostic significance of either OS or PFS in patients with low PD-L1 expression. In summary, CA-IT did not improve nivolumab efficacy in NSQ-NSCLCs with low PD-L1 expression; however, it induced decreasing MDSC, resulting in a durable response. Higher baseline TFRC levels predicted a favorable response to nivolumab in NSCLC with low PD-L1 expression.

Efficient and sustainable water electrolysis achieved by excess electron reservoir enabling charge replenishment to catalysts

Suppressing the oxidation of active-Ir(III) in IrOx catalysts is highly desirable to realize an efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction in water electrolysis. Although charge replenishment from supports can be effective in preventing the oxidation of IrOx catalysts, most supports have inherently limited charge transfer capability. Here, we demonstrate that an excess electron reservoir, which is a charged oxygen species, incorporated in antimony-doped tin oxide supports can effectively control the Ir oxidation states by boosting the charge donations to IrOx catalysts. Both computational and experimental analyses reveal that the promoted charge transfer driven by excess electron reservoir is the key parameter for stabilizing the active-Ir(III) in IrOx catalysts. When used in a polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzer, Ir catalyst on excess electron reservoir incorporated support exhibited 75 times higher mass activity than commercial nanoparticle-based catalysts and outstanding long-term stability for 250 h with a marginal degradation under a water-splitting current of 1 A cm-2. Moreover, Ir-specific power (74.8 kW g-1) indicates its remarkable potential for realizing gigawatt-scale H2 production for the first time.

Chemotherapy-Related Cardiac Dysfunction: Quantitative Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Image Parameters and Their Prognostic Implications

OBJECTIVE

To quantitatively analyze the cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) characteristics of chemotherapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) and explore their prognostic value for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 145 patients (male:female = 76:69, mean age = 63.0 years) with cancer and heart failure who underwent CMR between January 2015 and January 2021 were included. CMR was performed using a 3T scanner (Siemens). Biventricular functions, native T1 T2, extracellular volume fraction (ECV) values, and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) of the left ventricle (LV) were compared between those with and without CTRCD. These were compared between patients with mild-to-moderate CTRCD and those with severe CTRCD. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between the CMR parameters and MACE occurrence during follow-up in the CTRCD patients.

RESULTS

Among 145 patients, 61 had CTRCD and 84 did not have CTRCD. Native T1, ECV, and T2 were significantly higher in the CTRCD group (1336.9 ms, 32.5%, and 44.7 ms, respectively) than those in the non-CTRCD group (1303.4 ms, 30.5%, and 42.0 ms, respectively; P = 0.013, 0.010, and < 0.001, respectively). They were not significantly different between patients with mild-to-moderate and severe CTRCD. Indexed LV mass was significantly smaller in the CTRCD group (65.0 g/m² vs. 78.9 g/m²; P < 0.001). According to the multivariable Cox regression analysis, T2 (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.14, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-1.27; P = 0.028) and quantified LGE (HR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.01-1.13; P = 0.021) were independently associated with MACE in the CTRCD patients.

CONCLUSION

Quantitative parameters from CMR have the potential to evaluate myocardial changes in CTRCD. Increased T2 with reduced LV mass was demonstrated in CTRCD patients even before the development of severe cardiac dysfunction. T2 and quantified LGE may be independent prognostic factors for MACE in patients with CTRCD.

Overcoming Charge Confinement in Perovskite Nanocrystal Solar Cells

The small nanoparticle size and long-chain ligands in colloidal metal halide perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) cause charge confinement, which impedes exciton dissociation and carrier extraction in PeQD solar cells, so they have low short-circuit current density Jsc , which impedes further increases in their power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, a re-assembling process (RP) is developed for perovskite nanocrystalline (PeNC) films made of colloidal perovskite nanocrystals to increase Jsc in PeNC solar cells. The RP of PeNC films increases their crystallite size and eliminates long-chain ligands, and thereby overcomes the charge confinement in PeNC films. These changes facilitate exciton dissociation and increase carrier extraction in PeNC solar cells. By use of this method, the gradient-bandgap PeNC solar cells achieve a Jsc = 19.30 mA cm-2 without compromising the photovoltage, and yield a high PCE of 16.46% with negligible hysteresis and good stability. This work provides a new strategy to process PeNC films and pave the way for high performance PeNC optoelectronic devices.

Large-Area Printed Oxide Film Sensors Enabling Ultrasensitive and Dual Electrical/Colorimetric Detection of Hydrogen at Room Temperature

Commercial hydrogen (H2) sensors operate at high temperatures, which increases power consumption and poses a safety risk owing to the flammable nature of H2. Here, a polymer-noble metal-metal oxide film is fabricated using the spin-coating and printing methods to realize a highly sensitive, low-voltage operation, wide-operating-concentration, and near-monoselective H2 sensor at room temperature. The H2 sensors with an optimized thickness of Pd nanoparticles and SnO2 showed an extremely high response of 16,623 with a response time of 6 s and a recovery time of 5 s at room temperature and 2% H2. At the same time, printed flexible sensors demonstrate excellent sensitivity, with a response of 2300 at 2% H2. The excellent sensing performance at room temperature is due to the optimal SnO2 thickness, corresponding to the Debye length and the oxygen and H2 spillover caused by the optimized coverage of the Pd catalyst. Furthermore, multistructures of WO3 and SnO2 films are used to fabricate a new type of dual-signal sensor, which demonstrated simultaneous conductance and transmittance, i.e., color change. This work provides an effective strategy to develop robust, flexible, transparent, and long-lasting H2 sensors through large-area printing processes based on polymer-metal-metal oxide nanostructures.

Dysregulation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway via Rnf146 upregulation in a VPA-induced mouse model of autism spectrum disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with impaired social behavior and communication, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests. In addition to genetic factors, environmental factors such as prenatal drug exposure contribute to the development of ASD. However, how those prenatal factors induce behavioral deficits in the adult stage is not clear. To elucidate ASD pathogenesis at the molecular level, we performed a high-resolution mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomic analysis on the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of mice exposed to valproic acid (VPA) in utero, a widely used animal model of ASD. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in VPA-exposed mice showed significant overlap with ASD risk genes, including differentially expressed genes from the postmortem cortex of ASD patients. Functional annotations of the DEPs revealed significant enrichment in the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, which is dysregulated by the upregulation of Rnf146 in VPA-exposed mice. Consistently, overexpressing Rnf146 in the PFC impaired social behaviors and altered the Wnt signaling pathway in adult mice. Furthermore, Rnf146-overexpressing PFC neurons showed increased excitatory synaptic transmission, which may underlie impaired social behavior. These results demonstrate that Rnf146 is critical for social behavior and that dysregulation of Rnf146 underlies social deficits in VPA-exposed mice.

Adnp-mutant mice with cognitive inflexibility, CaMKIIα hyperactivity, and synaptic plasticity deficits

ADNP syndrome, involving the ADNP transcription factor of the SWI/SNF chromatin-remodeling complex, is characterized by developmental delay, intellectual disability, and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Although Adnp-haploinsufficient (Adnp-HT) mice display various phenotypic deficits, whether these mice display abnormal synaptic functions remain poorly understood. Here, we report synaptic plasticity deficits associated with cognitive inflexibility and CaMKIIα hyperactivity in Adnp-HT mice. These mice show impaired and inflexible contextual learning and memory, additional to social deficits, long after the juvenile-stage decrease of ADNP protein levels to ~10% of the newborn level. The adult Adnp-HT hippocampus shows hyperphosphorylated CaMKIIα and its substrates, including SynGAP1, and excessive long-term potentiation that is normalized by CaMKIIα inhibition. Therefore, Adnp haploinsufficiency in mice leads to cognitive inflexibility involving CaMKIIα hyperphosphorylation and excessive LTP in adults long after its marked expressional decrease in juveniles.

In vivo quantitative photoacoustic monitoring of corticosteroid-induced vasoconstriction

SIGNIFICANCE

Corticosteroids-commonly prescribed medications for skin diseases-inhibit the secretion of vasodilators, such as prostaglandin, thereby exerting anti-inflammatory action by constricting capillaries in the dermis. The effectiveness of corticosteroids is determined by the degree of vasoconstriction followed by skin whitening, namely, the blanching effect. However, the current method of observing the blanching effect indirectly evaluates the effects of corticosteroids.

AIM

In this study, we employed optical-resolution photoacoustic (PA) microscopy (OR-PAM) to directly visualize the blood vessels and quantitatively evaluate vasoconstriction.

APPROACH

Using OR-PAM, the vascular density in mice skin was monitored for 60 min after performing each experimental procedure for four groups, and the vasoconstriction was quantified. Volumetric PA data were segmented into the papillary dermis, reticular dermis, and hypodermis based on the vascular characteristics obtained through OR-PAM. The vasoconstrictive effect of each skin layer was quantified according to the dermatological treatment method.

RESULTS

In the case of corticosteroid topical application, vasoconstriction was observed in the papillary ( 56.4 ± 10.9 % ) and reticular ( 45.1 ± 4.71 % ) dermis. For corticosteroid subcutaneous injection, constriction was observed solely in the reticular ( 49.5 ± 9.35 % ) dermis. In contrast, no vasoconstrictions were observed with nonsteroidal topical application.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results indicate that OR-PAM can quantitatively monitor the vasoconstriction induced by corticosteroids, thereby validating OR-PAMs potential as a practical evaluation tool for predicting the effectiveness of corticosteroids in dermatology.

Prospects of glove-box versus air-processed organic solar cells

In the search for alternate green energy sources to offset dependence on fossil fuels, solar energy can certainly meet two needs with one deed: fulfil growing global energy demands due to its non-depletable nature and lower greenhouse gas emissions. As such, third generation thin film photovoltaic technology based organic solar cells (OSCs) can certainly play their role in providing electricity at a competing or lower cost than 1st and 2nd generation solar technologies. As OSCs are still at an early stage of research and development, much focus has been placed on improving power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) inside a controlled environment i.e. a glove-box (GB) filled with an inert gas such as N₂. This was necessary until now, to control and study the local nanomorphology of the spin-coated blend films. For OSCs to compete with other solar energy technologies, OSCs should produce similar or even better morphologies in an open environment i.e. air, such that air-processed OSCs can result in similar PCEs in comparison to their GB-processed counterparts. In this review, we have compared GB- vs. air-processed OSCs from morphological and device physics aspects and underline the key features of efficient OSCs, processed in either GB or air.

Molecular Subtypes and Tumor Microenvironment Characteristics of Small-Cell Lung Cancer Associated with Platinum-Resistance

Although molecular subtypes of small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) have been proposed, their clinical relevance and therapeutic implications are not fully understood. Thus, we aimed to refine molecular subtypes and to uncover therapeutic targets. We classified the subtypes based on gene expression (n = 81) and validated them in our samples (n = 87). Non-SCLC samples were compared with SCLC subtypes to identify the early development stage of SCLC. Single-cell transcriptome analysis was applied to dissect the TME of bulk samples. Finally, to overcome platinum resistance, we performed drug screening of patient-derived cells and cell lines. Four subtypes were identified: the ASCL1+ (SCLC-A) subtype identified as TP53/RB-mutated non-SCLC representing the early development stage of SCLC; the immune activation (SCLC-I) subtype, showing high CD8+/PD-L1+ T-cell infiltration and endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT); the NEUROD1 (SCLC-N) subtype, which showed neurotransmission process; and the POU2F3+ (SCLC-P) subtype with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). EndMT was associated with the worst prognosis. While SCLC-A/N exhibited platinum sensitivity, the EndMT signal of SCLC-I conferred platinum resistance. A BET inhibitor suppressed the aggressive angiogenesis phenotype of SCLC-I. We revealed that EndMT development contributed to a poor outcome in SCLC-I. Moreover, heterogenous TME development facilitated platinum resistance. BET inhibitors are novel candidates for overcoming platinum resistance.

One-Pot Synthesis of All-Inorganic CsPbClBr2 Blue Perovskite Quantum Dots via Stoichiometric Precursor

The synthesis of perovskite-based blue light-emitting particles is valuable for several applications as the excellent optical properties and performances of the constituting materials associated with multi-exciton generation can be exploited. However, the preparation of perovskite precursors requires high temperatures, resulting in a complex manufacturing process. This paper proposes a one-pot method to synthesize CsPbClBr₂ blue light-emitting quantum dots (QDs). In the case of nonstoichiometric precursor synthesis, the CsPbClBr₂ QDs coexisted with additional products. The solvent for synthesizing mixed perovskite nanoparticles (containing chloride) was selected by mixing dimethylformamide (DMF) and/or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in different ratios. When only DMF was used with the stoichiometric CsBr and PbX₂ (X = Cl, Br) ratio, the quantum yield was 70.55%, and superior optical properties were achieved. Moreover, no discoloration was observed for 400 h, and a high photoluminescence intensity was maintained. When deionized water was added to form a double layer with hexane, the luminescence was maintained for 15 days. In other words, the perovskite did not easily decompose even when in contact with water, which suppressed the release of Pb²⁺, which are heavy metal atoms in the structure. Overall, the proposed one-pot method for all-inorganic-based perovskite QDs provides a platform for synthesizing superior blue light-emitting materials.
