Abstract
Ultrafast multiphoton ionization of Xe in strong extreme ultraviolet free-electron laser (FEL) fields (91 eV, 30 fs, 1.6×10^{12} W/cm^{2}) has been investigated by multielectron-ion coincidence spectroscopy. The electron spectra recorded in coincidence with Xe^{4+} show characteristic features associated with two-photon absorption to the 4d^{-2} double core-hole (DCH) states and subsequent Auger decay. It is found that the pathway via the DCH states, which has eluded clear identification in previous studies, makes a large contribution to the multiple ionization, despite the long FEL pulse duration compared with the lifetime of the 4d core-hole states.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We compared the bone strength measured via quantitative computed tomography-based finite element method (QCT/FEM) between healthy adults with and without ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). No statistically significant difference was observed in the bone strength between healthy adults with and without OPLL. Hyperostosis of the posterior longitudinal ligament in OPLL may not be associated with the systemic bone strength. INTRODUCTION Although patients with OPLL have been reportedly associated with increased level of bone mineral density (BMD) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), little is known about the bone strength in OPLL subjects. The aim of this study is to investigate the bone strength measured via QCT/FEM in healthy subjects with OPLL using the medical check-up data, including whole-body CT scans. METHODS We examined 796 participants (529 men and 267 women) who underwent CT scans in a single health center between January 2008 and May 2009. We identified OPLL in whole spine and divided the subjects into two groups: non-OPLL and OPLL groups. We calculated the predicted bone strength (PBS) of the proximal femur using QCT/FEM and examined the bone mineral status of the calcaneus using quantitative ultrasound (QUS). We compared the PBS and the QUS parameters between the non-OPLL and OPLL groups. RESULTS Seventy-four subjects (9.3%; 57 men and 17 women) were diagnosed with OPLL in the whole spine. The OPLL group was significantly older than the non-OPLL group. No statistically significant difference was observed in the PBS and the QUS parameters between the non-OPLL and OPLL groups in both sexes. Furthermore, no statistically significant difference was noted in the PBS and the QUS parameters between two groups in age- and gender-matched analysis. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that hyperostosis of the posterior longitudinal ligament in OPLL may not be associated with bone strength and bone mineral status at the extremities.

Abstract
To expand the spectral bandwidths with high diffraction efficiency of volume phase (VP) gratings, it is important to know the influence of a variety of refractive index distributions (RIDs) inside the recording material on the bandwidths. The influence of various graded types of RIDs on the full width at half the maximum of the spectral bandwidth (${\lambda _{\rm FWHM}}$λFWHM) and the angular bandwidth (${\theta _{\rm FWHM}}$θFWHM) is investigated in the Bragg regime. It becomes clear that various graded types of RIDs influence their bandwidths and the characteristics, and the combination of the RIDs and refractive index modulation (${{ n}_m}$nm) is the most important factor for obtaining the large bandwidths of VP gratings. Theoretically, the ${\lambda _{\rm FWHM}}$λFWHM are obtained as the values of 149.7 nm and 257.6 nm (${{ n}_m} = {0.045}$nm=0.045) for the wavelengths of 900 nm and 1550 nm, respectively. Furthermore, I have succeeded in developing the expression for ${\lambda _{\rm FWHM}}$λFWHM and ${\theta _{\rm FWHM}}$θFWHM, using the proportional characteristics of VP gratings investigated in this work. The correlative coupling-length coefficients "G-factors" devised as a variety of RID functions in the previous paper are introduced into them. It is apparent that the derived equations of the bandwidths can be adapted to any graded type of RID that changes continuously from a triangular type to a rectangular type of VP grating, which has not been reported yet. The equations have made it easy to design ${\lambda _{\rm FWHM}}$λFWHM and ${\theta _{\rm FWHM}}$θFWHM of VP gratings.

Abstract
The equations for the coupling coefficient and the grating thickness of volume phase gratings are derived from Maxwell's equations in this work. The equations cover all graded types of refractive index distributions (RIDs) which change continuously from a triangular type to a rectangular type. The functions expressed as various graded types of RIDs, which are proposed in this work, are used among them. Furthermore, the new idea, which is the correlative coupling-length coefficient, is devised for the first time as a variety of RID function, "G-factor." The results based on the coupled mode theory in this work show a very close agreement under 0.2% with the results of the rigorous coupled-wave analysis method. The values of the grating thickness and the G-factor are confirmed with validity. By means of this new method, not only can the grating thickness of any graded type of VP grating which is under the Bragg condition be obtained very easily, but the spectral bandwidths and the angular bandwidths which are not under the Bragg condition can be controlled very easily and the configurations of RIDs can be estimated as well.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
The progression to persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a worse clinical outcome in patients with previous atrial tachyarrhythmias. New-generation atrial antitachycardia pacing (ATP) (Reactive ATP) reduced the progression to persistent AF in patients with pacemaker and preserved left ventricular (LV) function. However, little is known about the efficacy of Reactive ATP in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) and LV dysfunction.
Purpose
We aimed to investigate the efficacy of Reactive ATP for atrial tachyarrhythmias in patients with LV dysfunction (LV ejection fraction [LVEF] <40%).
Methods
This study included 423 patients with CIED and previous atrial tachyarrthythmias. Reactive ATP was programmed in 284 patients (ATP group) and 139 were implanted with a dual-chamber device without ATP function (control group). The differences in the success rate of ATP and incidence of progression to persistent AF (≥7 days) between the ATP and control groups were evaluated in 108 patients with LVEF <40% (reduced LVEF) and 315 with LVEF ≥40% (preserved LVEF). Patients with persistent AF were excluded from this study.
Results
During 710±337 days of follow-up period, 16 patients (15%) with reduced LVEF and 51 (16%) with preserved LVEF progressed to persistent AF (p=0.88). The mean ATP success rate was lower in patients with reduced LVEF than in those with preserved LVEF, although not statistically significant (reduced LVEF: 27.2±19.4% and preserved LVEF: 35.1±29.2%, p=0.12). The incidence of progression to persistent AF was significantly lower in the ATP group than in the control group both in patients with reduced and preserved LVEF (log-rank, reduced LVEF: p=0.0070 and preserved LVEF: p<0.0001) (Figure). Multivariate analysis showed that use of Reactive ATP and smaller left atrium were associated with lower incidences of persistent AF, while LVEF was not predictive of progression to persistent AF (Reactive ATP: hazard ratio [HR] 0.28, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.17–0.46, p<0.0001, left atrium diameter: HR 1.03, 95% CI 1.00–1.07, p=0.030).
Figure 1
Conclusions
Reactive ATP was effective in preventing AF progression in patients with LV dysfunction.

Abstract
We report neutron scattering measurements of single-crystalline YFe_{2}Ge_{2} in the normal state, which has the same crystal structure as the 122 family of iron pnictide superconductors. YFe_{2}Ge_{2} does not exhibit long-range magnetic order but exhibits strong spin fluctuations. Like the iron pnictides, YFe_{2}Ge_{2} displays anisotropic stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations at (π, 0, π). More interesting, however, is the observation of strong spin fluctuations at the in-plane ferromagnetic wave vector (0, 0, π). These ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are isotropic in the (H, K) plane, whose intensity exceeds that of stripe spin fluctuations. Both the ferromagnetic and stripe spin fluctuations remain gapless down to the lowest measured energies. Our results naturally explain the absence of magnetic order in YFe_{2}Ge_{2} and also imply that the ferromagnetic correlations may be a key ingredient for iron-based materials.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: While Preservation of NAC is concerned to increase the risk of local recurrences in the retroareolar glandular tissue, nipple sparing mastectomy (NSM) is increasing in patients with breast cancer and has been shown to result in better cosmetic outcome and the benefit for quality-of-life. It is necessary to predict accurately NAC involvement in order to select which patients may be candidates to NSM. The distance from the nipple to the tumor (DNT) is proposed as one of the best criteria to select the patient. The purpose of this study is to identify the predictors of NAC involvement retrospectively and to develop a clinical predictive model to select the patients who can be offered preservation of NAC.Methods: A total of 168 patients with primary operable breast cancer who received subcutaneous mastectomy for breast reconstruction at Saitama Medical Center during July 2013 to December 2017 were selected from the hospital's surgical database. NAC involvement was defined by the presence of invasive carcinoma and/or ductal carcinoma in situ at the subareolar margin.
Results: Of the 148 patients who were preserved NAC, 89.9% (133/148) were NAC involvement negative and 10.1% (15/148) were positive in permanent pathological specimens. Of the 20 patients who were resected NAC, NAC involvement positivity was only 50.0% (10/20). This revealed that NAC involvement with a sensitivity (SN) of 40.0%, a specificity (SP) of 93.0%, a positive predictive value (PPV) of 50.0% and a negative predictive value (NPV) of 89.9% (AUC=0.665, 95%CI: 0.5345-0.796). In 140 patients who were performed intraoperative sub-nipple frozen section biopsy, the findings was significantly associated with NAC involvement (P<0.001), and which predict the NAC involvement with a SN of 93.3%, a SP of 89.6%, a PPV of 51.9%, and a NPV of 99.1% (AUC=0.915, 95%CI: 0.835-0.994). In the concordance rate between frozen section findings and definitive pathologic results, DCIS was 53% (9/17), atypical cell was 50% (2/4) and invasive ductal carcinoma was 100% (3/3). Correlation between NAC involvement and clinicopathological factors, tumor size ≥4cm (P<0.001), DNT <1cm by MMG (P=0.002), DNT <1cm by MRI (P<0.001), nipple contrast findings by MRI (P<0.001), tumor in central portion (P<0.001), multicentirc/focal lesion (P<0.001), c(N) positive (P=0.014) were significant relation with NAC involvement. Each predictors were scored 0 or 1, and the total score of 0-3 points was defined as low risk, 4 points as intermediate risk, and 5-7 points as high risk. Depending on this categorized classification, the NAC involvement rate was 3.5% (5/142) in low risk, 68.7% (11/16) in intermediate risk, 90.0% (9/10) in high risk and there was a significant correlation between the risk group and NAC involvement (P <0.001). Notably, assuming that NAC is preserved for low risk patients and is resected for intermediate and high risk patients, NACPI contributes to improve the accuracy of selecting the surgical procedures (SN 80.0%, SP 95.8%, PPV 76.9%, NPV 96.5% (AUC=0.879, 95%CI: 0.784-0.974)).Conclusion: This study suggests that NACPI can help us indicating subcutaneous mastectomy for the breast cancer patients who request preserve NAC with more oncological safety.

Abstract
Cloud patterns are important clues for revealing the atmospheric circulation of Venus. Recently, a planetary-scale streak structure has been discovered in middle- and lower-cloud images of Venus' night-side taken by IR2, the 2-μm camera, on board the Akatsuki orbiter. However, its formation mechanism has not been investigated. Here we succeed, for the first time, in reproducing the patterns of the observed streak structure, as regions of strong downward flows that develop in high-resolution global simulations of the Venus atmosphere. The streaks are formed in both hemispheres with equatorial symmetry, which is caused by equatorial Rossby-like and Kelvin-like waves with zonal wavenumber one. The low-stability layer that has been suggested by past observations is essential for reproducing the streak structure. The streaks of downward flow result from the interaction of the meridionally tilted phase lines of the Rossby-like waves and the characteristics of baroclinic instability produced around the low-stability layer.

Abstract
Ghrelin is a stomach-derived peptide hormone with an appetite-stimulating effect. Octanoylation on the serine-3 residue of ghrelin by ghrelin O-acyl transferase (GOAT) is essential for its orexigenic effect. Mature octanoylated ghrelin is generated by the C-terminal cleavage of octanoylated proghrelin via prohormone convertases (furin, PC1/3, or PC2). We previously established an AGS-GHRL8 cell line that produces octanoylated ghrelin in the presence of octanoic acid, and found that oleanolic acid suppresses octanoylated ghrelin production in AGS-GHRL8 cells. Here, we investigated the effects of oleanolic acid in C57BL/6J mice fed a standard, high-fat, or high-glucose diet. Oral administration of oleanolic acid for seven days (20 or 40 mg/kg) reduced plasma octanoylated ghrelin levels and body weight gain in the standard diet-fed mice but not in other two diet-fed mice. There were no significant differences in ghrelin, GOAT, furin, PC1/3, and PC2 gene expression levels between the vehicle- and oleanolic acid-treated mice fed a standard diet. Octanoyl-CoA is a substrate for ghrelin octanoylation by GOAT. We found that oleanolic acid did not affect octanoyl-CoA production in vitro. Hence, the inhibitory effect of oleanolic acid on octanoylated ghrelin production may not be related to the decrease in octanoyl-CoA. The results of this study may provide valuable knowledge for the development of anti-obesity agents with an inhibitory effect on octanoylated ghrelin production.

Abstract
Ghrelin is an orexigenic peptide hormone produced in the stomach. The major active form is octanoylated ghrelin, which is modified with an n-octanoic acid at the serine-3 residue. Inhibition of octanoylated ghrelin production is useful for the prevention and improvement of obesity. We previously developed a cell-based assay system employing a ghrelin-expressing cell line, AGS-GHRL8, and found various compounds that decreased octanoylated ghrelin levels using this system. (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) is a bioactive catechin in green tea and reportedly has an anti-obesity effect; however, it remains unclear whether EGCG inhibits octanoylated ghrelin production. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effect of EGCG on octanoylated ghrelin levels in AGS-GHRL8 cells and C57BL/6J mice. EGCG significantly reduced the octanoylated ghrelin level in AGS-GHRL8 cells. In mice, three days of treatment with TEAVIGO®, which contains 97.69% EGCG, lowered the plasma octanoylated ghrelin level by 40% from that in control mice. In addition, TEAVIGO® reduced the mRNA expression of ghrelin and prohormone convertase 1/3, an enzyme responsible for the processing of proghrelin to mature ghrelin, in the mouse stomach, suggesting that the reduced expression of these genes may contribute to the inhibition of octanoylated ghrelin production. These results suggest a decrease in the octanoylated ghrelin level to be involved in the anti-obesity effect of EGCG, which thus has potential for the development of anti-obesity agents with ghrelin-lowering effect.

Abstract
Aquaporins (AQPs) are ubiquitous water channels that facilitate the transport of many small molecules and may play multiple vital roles in aquatic environments. In particular, mechanisms to maintain transmembrane fluxes of important small molecules have yet to be studied in marine photoautotrophic organisms. Here, we report the occurrence of multiple AQPs with differential cellular localizations in marine diatoms, an important group of oceanic primary producers. The AQPs play a role in mediating the permeability of membranes to CO2 and NH3 In silico surveys revealed the presence of five AQP orthologs in the pennate diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum and two in the centric diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana GFP fusions of putative AQPs displayed clear localization to the plasma membrane (PtAGP1 and PtAQP2), the chloroplast endoplasmic reticulum (CER; PtAGP1 and PtAQP3), and the tonoplast (PtAQP5) in P. tricornutum In T. pseudonana, GFP-AQP fusion proteins were found on the vacuole membrane (TpAQP1) and CER (TpAQP2). Transcript levels of both PtAQP1 and PtAQP2 were highly induced by ammonia, while only PtAQP2 was induced by high (1%[v/v]) CO2 Constitutive overexpression of GFP-tagged PtAQP1 and PtAQP2 significantly increased CO2 and NH3 permeability in P. tricornutum, strongly indicating that these AQPs function in regulating CO2/NH3 permeability in the plasma membrane and/or CER. Cells carrying GFP-tagged PtAQP1 and PtAQP2 had higher nonphotochemical quenching under high light relative to that of wild-type cells, suggesting that these AQPs are involved in photoprotection. These AQPs may facilitate the efflux of NH3, preventing the uncoupling effect of high intracellular ammonia concentrations.

Abstract
Reflux following an esophagectomy with gastric conduit reconstruction in the posterior mediastinum is a clinically significant problem. In this study, we investigated the frequency and impact of reflux on the quality of life (QOL) among 158 patients who underwent an esophagectomy for esophageal cancer using an original questionnaire and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Version 3.0 (EORTC QLQ-C30). Reflux frequency was assessed using the original questionnaire. The number of patients who complained of reflux every day, two or three times a week, once a week, or less than once a week was 16 (10.1%), 21 (13.3%), 26 (16.5%), and 60 (38.0%), respectively. Out of 35 patients (22.2%) reported no reflux symptoms. Patients were divided into two groups: those with reflux ≥ once/week (63 patients) and those with low frequency of symptoms (95 patients). Time elapsed following surgery was the only factor to influence reflux frequency. Reflux frequency decreased within two years of surgery; however, the frequency plateaued after more than two years. QOL was assessed using the EORTC QLQ-C30. The ≥ once/week reflux group had a significantly lower global health status score than the low-frequency reflux group (59.6 ± 24.2 vs. 70.8 ± 20.7; P = 0.007). In addition, the ≥ once/week reflux group had a significantly lower social functioning score than the low-frequency reflux group (81.6 ± 24.1 vs. 88.4 ± 19.8; P = 0.035). Regarding symptoms, the ≥ once/week reflux group had significantly higher scores for fatigue, nausea, and vomiting, dyspnea and insomnia compared to the low-frequency reflux group (fatigue: 42.4 ± 21.9 vs. 28.9 ± 18.4, P < 0.001; nausea and vomiting: 17.3 ± 17.1 vs. 4.9 ± 10.6, P < 0. 001; dyspnea: 29.2 ± 26.0 vs. 21.7 ± 26.8, P = 0.043; insomnia: 22.2 ± 31.1 vs. 10.5 ± 21.7, P = 0.015). Thus, reflux after an esophagectomy was associated with a lower QOL.

Abstract
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a low-loss and low-crosstalk Mach-Zehnder mode/wavelength multi/demultiplexer for WDM/MDM transmission based on a Si-photonics platform. A broadband 3-dB mode divider, which is also newly devised here, makes it possible to compose a Mach-Zehnder filter for "mode" and "wavelength" simultaneously. Transmission characteristics of fabricated 3-dB mode dividers are in excellent agreement with theoretical results. Mach-Zehnder filters using the 3-dB mode divider with a free spectral range (FSR) of 20 and 1 nm are also fabricated and the modal crosstalk is less than -24 dB in the 40-nm wavelength range for the MZ filter with an FSR of 20 nm. The tuning of the peak wavelength position by the TiN heater is also demonstrated.

Abstract
Although no consensus is available on the treatment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) invading adjacent organs (T4), establishing effective induction treatments is crucial to altering an unresectable status and achieving curative resection. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of chemotherapy using 5-fluorouracil, cisplatin, and docetaxel (DCF) as the initial induction treatment for T4 ESCC. Fifty patients without distant metastasis who underwent initial induction chemotherapy using DCF for T4 ESCC were propensity score-matched with 50 patients who underwent radiotherapy concurrent with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (CRT). In the DCF group, 24 (48.0%) patients underwent surgery, achieving a 64% clinical response rate compared to 72.0% for induction CRT. CRT was also performed in another 24 (48.0%) patients in the DCF group in whom surgical resection was not indicated. The DCF group had significantly higher overall resectability than the CRT group (78.0% vs. 48.0%, P = 0.0017). The esophageal perforation rate during induction treatments was significantly lower in the DCF group than the CRT group (4.0% vs. 18.0%, P = 0.0205). Prognosis was significantly better in the DCF group than the CRT group (5-year cancer-specific survival 42.1% vs. 22.2%, P = 0.0146). Thus, induction DCF chemotherapy in patients with T4 ESCC reduced esophageal perforation and increased overall resectability, leading to better survival than CRT alone. Therefore, DCF chemotherapy may be an effective and safe option for initial induction treatment of T4 ESCC.

Abstract
As a generic property, all substances transfer heat through microscopic collisions of constituent particles 1 . A solid conducts heat through both transverse and longitudinal acoustic phonons, but a liquid employs only longitudinal vibrations2,3. As a result, a solid is usually thermally more conductive than a liquid. In canonical viewpoints, such a difference also serves as the dynamic signature distinguishing a solid from a liquid. Here, we report liquid-like thermal conduction observed in the crystalline AgCrSe2. The transverse acoustic phonons are completely suppressed by the ultrafast dynamic disorder while the longitudinal acoustic phonons are strongly scattered but survive, and are thus responsible for the intrinsically ultralow thermal conductivity. This scenario is applicable to a wide variety of layered compounds with heavy intercalants in the van der Waals gaps, manifesting a broad implication on suppressing thermal conduction. These microscopic insights might reshape the fundamental understanding on thermal transport properties of matter and open up a general opportunity to optimize performances of thermoelectrics.

Abstract
Although 3-field lymph node dissection (3-FLD) is often performed for thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), the clinical effects of cervical lymph node dissection in addition to mediastinal and abdominal dissections on postoperative complications remain unclear. A total of 367 ESCC patients who underwent curative esophagectomy for thoracic esophageal cancer in our hospital from 2010 to 2015 were included in the study: 157 patients who underwent 2-field lymph node dissection (2-FLD) and 210 patients who underwent 3-FLD. Clinicopathological parameters and postoperative complications based on the Clavien-Dindo classification were compared between the two groups. We performed propensity score matching (PSM) analyses to compare the groups with well-balanced backgrounds. In terms of patient background, clinical T (p < 0.001), N (p < 0.001), and M (p = 0.002) stage of tumor was significantly more advanced; therefore, preoperative treatment was more frequently performed in the 3-FLD group than in the 2-FLD group (91.0% vs. 79.0%, P< 0.001). However, perioperative parameters including operation time, blood loss, and the number of dissected mediastinal and abdominal lymph nodes did not differ between the groups. In terms of postoperative complications, the occurrence rate of pneumonia increased significantly in patients with 3-FLD compared to 2-FLD (grade III or higher: 10.5% vs. 3.2%, P= 0.025). Although the duration of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) was longer in the 3-FLD group than in the 2-FLD group (median 3 days vs. 2 days, P= 0.025), other postoperative parameters (including the highest level of postoperative serum C-reactive protein, intensive care unit stay, re-operation rate, and postoperative hospital stay) were similar between the groups. After PSM, the differences in the background between the groups disappeared. PSM analysis showed that there was no significant difference in each complication between the groups. The duration of SIRS tended to be longer in the 3-FLD group than in the 2-FLD group, but the difference was not significant. The field of lymphadenectomy negatively impacted the short-term outcome in ESCC patients in terms of pneumonia and inflammatory response. However, because the results of the PSM analyses indicate that the short-term outcome was similar between the two groups, 3-FLD could be as feasible as 2-FLD in ESCC patients.

Abstract
Population structure and demographic history of the Japanese Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius a highly piscivorous and migratory marine fish, were assessed using mitochondrial DNA control region sequences (n = 720) and microsatellite genotypes at five loci (n = 1331) for samples collected on Japanese coasts from 2001 to 2010. The population structure was panmictic and the haplotype and allele frequencies were temporally stable even during the recent recovery process. Demographic expansion was strongly supported throughout the Pleistocene, suggesting that the oscillating glacial and interglacial climate conditions in the Pleistocene had no substantial impact on the demographic history of S. niphonius.

Abstract
Diatoms are one of the most successful marine eukaryotic algal groups, responsible for up to 20% of the annual global CO2 fixation. The evolution of a CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM) allowed diatoms to overcome a number of serious constraints on photosynthesis in the marine environment, particularly low [CO2]aq in seawater relative to concentrations required by the CO2 fixing enzyme, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO), which is partly due to the slow diffusion rate of CO2 in water and a limited CO2 formation rate from [Formula: see text] in seawater. Diatoms use two alternative strategies to take up dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from the environment: one primarily relies on the direct uptake of [Formula: see text] through plasma-membrane type solute carrier (SLC) 4 family [Formula: see text] transporters and the other is more reliant on passive diffusion of CO2 formed by an external carbonic anhydrase (CA). Bicarbonate taken up into the cytoplasm is most likely then actively transported into the chloroplast stroma by SLC4-type transporters on the chloroplast membrane system. Bicarbonate in the stroma is converted into CO2 only in close proximity to RubisCO preventing unnecessary CO2 leakage. CAs play significant roles in mobilizing DIC as it is progressively moved towards the site of fixation. However, the evolutionary types and subcellular locations of CAs are not conserved between different diatoms, strongly suggesting that this DIC mobilization strategy likely evolved multiple times with different origins. By contrast, the recent discovery of the thylakoid luminal θ-CA indicates that the strategy to supply CO2 to RubisCO in the pyrenoid may be very similar to that of green algae, and strongly suggests convergent coevolution in CCM function of the thylakoid lumen not only among diatoms but among eukaryotic algae in general. In this review, both experimental and corresponding theoretical models of the diatom CCMs are discussed. This article is part of the themed issue 'The peculiar carbon metabolism in diatoms'.

Abstract
Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) is a well-known medicinal herb in the oriental medicine. The current study on bioactive triterpenoid in the root of S. miltiorrhiza led to the isolation of a new highly hydroxylated ursane-type triterpene, urs-12-ene-2α,3β,7β,16α-tetraol (1) and five known ones including 2β-hydroxypomolic acid (2), maslinic acid (3), asiatic acid (4), ursolic acid (5), and oleanolic acid (6). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analyses and comparison with literature data. The antiproliferative testing against HL-60 cells revealed that the new compound 1 and ursolic acid (5) showed weak and moderate activities with IC50 values of 42.2 and 11.7 μM. In addition, compounds 1-3 showed inhibitory effect on ghrelin activity. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
