Abstract
Meat quality is not only influenced by breed but also rearing environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different housing environments on growth performance, carcase traits, meat quality, physiological response pre-slaughter and fatty acid composition in two
pig breeds. A total of 120 growing pigs at 60–70 days of age were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial design with the breeds (Duroc × Landrace × Large White [D × L × LW] and Duroc × Landrace × Min pig [D × L × M]) and environmental enrichment
(barren concrete floor or enriched with straw bedding) as factors. Each treatment was performed in triplicate with ten pigs per replicate. The pigs housed in the enriched environment exhibited a higher average daily gain, average daily feed intake, saturated fatty acid percentage and backfat
depth than the pigs reared in the barren environment. Plasma cortisol levels were lower and growth hormone higher in enriched compared to barren pens. The D × L × M pigs showed lower cooking loss compared with the D × L × LW pigs. Moreover, the D × L × M
pigs exhibited poor growth performance but had a better water-holding capacity. Only carcase traits and meat quality interaction effects were observed. We concluded that an enriched environment can reduce pre- slaughter stress and improve the growth performance of pigs and modulate the fatty
acid composition of pork products.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and overweight/obesity in Yi people in Sichuan province. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in 2015. Stratified cluster sampling method was used to enroll Yi farmers and rural-to-urban Yi migrants aged 20-80 years. SES was measured by education level, personal annual income, and compound SES index. Unconditional logistic regression models were used to determine the association between SES and overweight/obesity (BMI≥24.0 kg/m(2)). Results: 1 894 Yi farmers and 1 162 rural-to urban migrants were included in the analysis. After adjustment for age, smoking, drinking and physical activity, compared with illiteracy, OR for farmer males with higher education level (primary or junior school, senior high school or higher) were 1.71 (95%CI: 1.13-2.58) and 4.15 (95%CI: 2.10-8.22). Compared with lower income group (<5 000 CNY/y), the higher income group had increased risk (OR=1.66, 95%CI: 1.12-2.44). For farmer males with medium and high SES level, the risk of overweight/obesity were 1.65 (95%CI: 1.02-2.67) and 3.26 (95%CI: 1.97-5.42) compared with low level of SES. For farmer females, the risk increased with the higher income, with OR as 1.49 (95%CI: 1.10-2.02). Compared with low SES level, farmer females with medium level of SES was associated with 1.47 (95%CI: 1.11-1.95) times higher risk of overweight/obesity. In Yi migrants, the association between SES and overweight/obesity was not found. Conclusion: Socioeconomic status was positively associated with overweight/obesity only in Yi farmers.

Abstract
Notch is a conserved signaling pathway that is essential for metazoan development and homeostasis; dysregulated signaling underlies the pathophysiology of numerous human diseases. Receptor-ligand interactions result in gene expression changes, which are regulated by the transcription factor RBPJ. RBPJ forms a complex with the intracellular domain of the Notch receptor and the coactivator Mastermind to activate transcription, but it can also function as a repressor by interacting with corepressor proteins. Here, we determine the structure of RBPJ bound to the corepressor SHARP and DNA, revealing its mode of binding to RBPJ. We tested structure-based mutants in biophysical and biochemical-cellular as-says to characterize the role of RBPJ as a repressor, clearly demonstrating that RBPJ mutants deficient for SHARP binding are incapable of repressing transcription of genes responsive to Notch signaling in cells. Altogether, our structure-function studies provide significant insights into the repressor function of RBPJ. Yuan et al. determine the X-ray structure of the corepressor SHARP bound to RBPJ, the nuclear effector of the Notch pathway. The structure-function analysis provides insights into corepressor binding to RBPJ and how RBPJ functions as a repressor of transcription of Notch target genes.

Abstract
In this paper, the propagation of Temporal Coherence Grating (TCG) pulse trains in a dispersive medium with a chirp is investigated for the first time. The two-time mutual coherence function of the TCG pulse trains propagating through extended dispersive medium specified by temporal ABCD matrix is derived and the evolution of their mean intensity and temporal degree of coherence (DOC) is explored. It is shown that the distribution of the mean intensity can be modulated freely by the number of grating lobes N, grating constant a, pulse duration T0, power distributions vn, group-velocity dispersion coefficient β2 and the medium chirper s. Upon dispersive-medium propagation, the single pulse splits into N+1 subpulses with the same or different peak intensities which depend on power distributions vn. What's more, during the propagation the pulse self-focusing occurs being the chirp-induced non-linear phenomenon. And the distribution of temporal DOC will degenerate into Gaussian form from initial periodic coherence distribution with increasing propagation distance z or adjusting incident pulse parameters and medium dispersion. The physical explanation and numerical illustrations relating to the pulse behavior are included.

Abstract
Dexmedetomidine (DMED), an alpha-2 adrenoreceptor agonist, has been widely used in regional anesthesia procedures. However, the effect of DMED on local anesthetic cardiotoxicity has not been well delineated. This study consisted of two experiments. In experiment A, 42 Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into 6 groups ( n = 7), each group was pretreated with DMED 0 μg kg−1 (D0 group), 1 μg kg−1 (D1 group), 3 μg kg−1 (D3 group), 6 μg kg−1 (D6 group), 12 μg kg−1 (D12 group), and 24 μg kg−1 (D24 group), administered through the right femoral vein. In experiment B, 20 SD rats were randomly divided into 4 groups ( n = 5), such as control group, DMED group, yohimbine (YOH) group, and DMED + YOH group. Each subgroup in experiment B was also pretreated similarly as in experiment A. After pretreatment of rats as described above (in experiments A and B), bupivacaine 2.5 mg kg−1 min−1 was infused to induce cardiac arrest. In experiment A, the lethal dose threshold of bupivacaine and plasma bupivacaine concentration in D3 and D6 group were higher than the other groups. In experiment B, there was no interaction between DMED and YOH in lethal dose threshold, arrhythmia time, plasma concentration of bupivacaine, and myocardial content of bupivacaine. DMED doses of 3–6 μg kg−1 elevated the lethal dose threshold of bupivacaine without involvement of the alpha-2 adrenoceptors.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the relationship between maternal thyroid-stimulating hormone levels during the first trimester and gestational diabetes risk. METHODS In Tianjin, China, 7258 women underwent a thyroid-stimulating hormone screening test within 12 gestational weeks and then had a glucose challenge test at 24-28 weeks of gestational age. The women with a glucose challenge test ≥7.8 mmol/l underwent a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test. Gestational diabetes was diagnosed following International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Group criteria. Restricted cubic spline analysis was performed to explore full-range risk associations of thyroid-stimulating hormone levels with gestational diabetes. Logistic regression was performed to obtain odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS In all, 594 women (8.2%) had gestational diabetes. Among women with thyroid-stimulating hormone ≤3.2 mIU/l, a positive association between thyroid-stimulating hormone levels and gestational diabetes risk was found (adjusted OR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.00-1.27). There was no relationship between thyroid-stimulating hormone levels and gestational diabetes risk in univariable and multivariable analyses among women with thyroid-stimulating hormone >3.2 mIU/l. In subgroup analyses, among women with thyroid-stimulating hormone ≤3.2 mIU/l and BMI ≥25 kg/m2 , the adjusted odds ratio for thyroid-stimulating hormone levels with gestational diabetes was enhanced to 1.25 (95% CI: 1.02-1.53). CONCLUSIONS In pregnant Chinese women, thyroid-stimulating hormone levels even within normal range in the first trimester were positively related to gestational diabetes risk, especially for pre-pregnancy overweight/obese women.

Abstract
Tertiary lymphoid structure (TLS) provides a local and critical microenvironment for both cellular and humoral immunity and supports effective antigen presentation and lymphocyte activation. However, the gene expression profile and prognostic significance of TLS in oral cancer remain largely unrevealed. In this study, we found the presence of both intratumoral and peritumoral TLSs in a series of 65 patients with oral cancer treated by surgical resection, with positive detection rates of 33.8 and 75.4%, respectively. The presence of intratumoral TLSs, but not peritumoral TLSs, was significantly associated with decreased P53 and Ki67 scores (P = 0·027 and 0·047, respectively). The survival analyses revealed that oral cancer patients with higher grades of TLSs was associated with improved disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) (P = 0·037 and 0·031, respectively). Gene expression profiling analysis of the cytokines and chemokines responsible for lymph-node neogenesis identified a three-up-regulated-gene set, i.e. IL7, LTB and CXCL13, which was shown to be correlated with human oral cancer-associated TLSs. This study provides a framework for better understanding of oral cancer-associated TLSs and for delineating future innovative prognostic biomarkers and immune therapeutic strategies for oral cancer.

Abstract
Antioxidants have been always used to improve post-slaughter meat quality in broilers subjected to stress. Forsythia suspensa extract (FSE), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, is generally regarded as a natural source of antioxidants. Therefore, the objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that FSE could protect post-slaughter breast muscles against oxidative injury induced by dexamethasone (DEX) mimicking chronic physiological stress in poultry production. Average daily gain and feed efficiency of poultry were suppressed by DEX and improved by FSE (P < 0.05). Dexamethasone caused the decrease in the redness value and the increase in the lightness and yellowness values and drip loss of the breast muscles (P < 0.05), and FSE had the converse effects (P < 0.05). Dietary FSE supplementation decreased monounsaturated fatty acid (FA) and increased polyunsaturated FA in breast muscles of broilers (P < 0.05). In addition, FSE decreased malondialdehyde and carbonyl content in the breast muscles of DEX-treated broilers (P < 0.05). The inhibition of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl in the breast muscles was decreased by DEX and increased by FSE (P < 0.05). Total-antioxidant capacity and glutathione peroxidase activity in the breast muscles were decreased in birds subjected to DEX and increased in birds supplemented with FSE (P < 0.05). Totally, DEX suppressed growth performance and induced breast muscle oxidative injury in broilers, and FSE supplementation improved antioxidant capacity to attenuate these adverse effects. Therefore, FSE could be a potential natural antioxidant to alleviate oxidative injury of the breast muscles in broilers and to improve the meat quality for human consumption.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
After activation by different factors, platelets can release a large number of platelet microparticles (PMPs), and continue to play a more durable and extensive role in promoting inflammation and thrombosis. Previous studies by our group have shown that PMPs can promote endothelial cell migration and lumen formation in vitro, and promote the release of inflammatory factors from monocytes. However, it is unclear whether PMPs can promote angiogenesis in the plaque and promote vascular wall inflammation and further lead to plaque instability.
Purpose
To investigate the effect of platelet microparticles (PMPs) from C57BL/6 mice on promoting atherosclerotic plaque formation and plaque stability in ApoE−/− mice.
Methods
Forty male apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE−/−) mice, aged 8 weeks and fed for 4 weeks with high-fat diet, were randomly divided into four groups (n=10 in each group)according to the table of random digit. The mice were respectively injected with PBS (PBS group), PMPs-free supernatants (SUP group), low-dose PMPs (LDP group) and high-dose PMPs (HDP group) once a week through tail vein injection for 8 weeks. At the end of the experiment, the mice were euthanized and the blood samples were collected to detect blood routine, blood lipids, liver and kidney function and inflammatory factors including CRP, IL-1β, TNF-α; The aorta and brachiocephalic trunk were sampled to detect the atherosclerotic plaque formation. Oil Red O staining, H&E staining, Masson staining and immunohistochemistry (CD68, MMP-9, α-SMA) were used to examine the stability of the atherosclerotic plaque in each group.
Results
There were no significant differences in body weight, blood routine (WBC, RBC, PLT, HGB), blood lipids (TG, TCH, LDL, HDL), liver (ALT, AST)and kidney function (UN, Cr)in each group. The levels of serum CRP, IL-1β and TNF-α in LDP group and HDP group were significantly higher than those in PBS group and SUP group (P<0.05). The total area of aortic atherosclerotic plaques in LDP group and HDP group were significantly greater than those in PBS group and SUP group (P<0.05). Compared with the PBS group, the lipid cores of the plaques in the other three groups were significantly increased (P<0.05). The content of collagen and the amount of smooth muscle cells in the plaques were significantly lower in HDP group than in PBS group (P<0.05), while macrophages increased significantly in HDP group (P<0.05).
Conclusion
PMPs promote the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in high-fat-fed ApoE−/− mice, as well as macrophage infiltration and inflammation in the plaques, reduce the content of collagen and the amount of smooth muscle cells, thus decreasing the stability of plaques.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is difficult to diagnose. Digital PCR (dPCR) is a novel method which can quantify trace nucleic acids. This study sought to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of dPCR analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for TBM. METHODS We collected CSF specimens from hospitalized TBM and non-TBM patients. Total CSF DNA was purified and the concentrations of Mycobacterium tuberculosis insert sequence 6110 (IS6110) and gyrase subunit B (gyrB) were quantified using droplet dPCR. The receiver operating characteristic curves of dPCR were established and the diagnostic performances were obtained. We also compared the sensitivity of dPCR with routine diagnostic tests. RESULTS A total of 101 patients were recruited, 68 of whom suffered from TBM (26 definite, 34 probable and eight possible TBM) and 33 from non-TBM. The sensitivity of IS6110-dPCR assay for total TBM was higher than that of gyrB-dPCR assay (57.4% (44.8-69.3%) vs. 22.1% (12.9-33.8%)), and there was no significant difference for specificity between them (97.0% (84.2-99.9%) vs. 100% (89.4-100.0%)). The sensitivity of IS6110-dPCR in definite TBM was higher than that in probable and possible TBM (73.1% vs. 52.9% and 25.0%, respectively). IS6110-dPCR assay showed a higher sensitivity than smear microscopy (53.3% vs. 6.7%), mycobacterial culture (50.0% vs. 12.5%), IS6110-quantitative PCR (53.1% vs. 21.9%) and Xpert MTB/RIF (70.4% vs. 29.6%). Long anti-tuberculosis treatment time was found to be significantly associated with negative dPCR results. CONCLUSION CSF IS6110-dPCR assay is a rapid and sensitive molecular test, which has the potential to be used to enhance the diagnosis of TBM.

Abstract
Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by chronic sinonasal mucosal inflammation. CRSwNP can be subdivided into two types based on eosinophilic inflammation: eosinophilic CRSwNP (Eos CRSwNP) and non-eosinophilic CRSwNP (Non-Eos CRSwNP). Eos CRSwNP and Non-Eos CRSwNP demonstrate distinct clinical manifestations, treatment outcomes, and cellular and immunopathologic characteristics. However, currently, there is no unified and generally accepted standard to define the Eos CRSwNP. The aim of this review is to compare the advantages and disadvantages of current methods used to classify Eos CRSwNP, in order to lay foundation for further study.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the diagnostic value and safety of endobronchial ultrasonography with guide-sheath (EBUS-GS) combined with virtual bronchoscopy navigation (VBN) in peripheral lung cancer. Methods: Between Dec. 2015 to Dec. 2016, patients with pulmonary solitary nodule suspected of early lung cancer on computed tomography (CT) in Department of Respiratory, Tangdu Hospital, Fourth Military Medical University were enrolled for this study. The patients underwent EBUS-GS transbronchoscopic lung biopsy (TBLB) with or without VBN. The visibility rate, diagnostic yield, influencing factors, the operation time and complications were evaluated in the 2 groups. The data were compared using independent sample t test or chi-squared test. Results: A total of 134 patients were enrolled and completed this study. Among them 74 were males and 60 were females. There were 64 cases in the group of EBUS-GS with VBN (VBNA), and 70 in the group without VBN (NVBNA). The visibility rate and diagnosis rate of VBNA group were 87.5% (56/64) and 78.1% (50/64), respectively. The mean time of operation and confirming the target lesions were (25±5), (5.8±1.3) min, respectively. The visibility rate and diagnosis rate of NVBNA group were 81.4%(57/70) and 75.7%(53/70), respectively. The mean time of operation and confirming the target lesions were (27±6), (9.8±1.5)min .There was no significant difference in the visibility rate and diagnosis rate between the 2 groups (χ(2)=0.933, P=0.334; χ(2)=0.109, P=0.838). There was no significant difference in the mean operation time between the 2 groups(t=0.633, P=0.524). But the time of confirming the target lesions between the 2 groups was statistically different (t=17.41, P<0.01). EBUS-GS-TBLB was well tolerated. No severe complications such as pneumothorax or chest pain were observed. There were 3 patients in the VBNA group and 7 patients in the NVBNA group experiencing a small amount of biopsy site bleeding. The incidence of complications did not differ between the 2 groups(χ(2)=1.366, P=0.330). Conclusions: VBN could not improve the diagnostic yield of EBUS-GS. However, it could shorten the time needed to confirm the target lesions and did not increase the incidence of EBUS-GS complications, indicating that EBUS-GS with VBN was a safe and effective method.

Abstract
Objective: To assess the associations of indoor fine particulate matter (PM(2.5)) from outdoor and indoor sources with heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) of Beijing. Methods: A total of 40 male patients in a stable stage of COPD were recruited from a hospital in a panel study in Beijing with 5 consecutive days of measurement for each subject. General information and disease history of the participants from questionnaires were obtained prior to the study. HR and HRV were repeatedly examined using dynamic electrocardiograph. HRV included standard deviation of all NN intervals (SDNN), root mean square of successive differences between adjacent NN intervals (rMSSD), total power (TP) power in the low-frequency band (LF) and the high-frequency band (HF). Iron was used as tracer element to separate indoor-originated PM(2.5) and outdoor-originated PM(2.5). Mixed-effect models were applied to assess the associations of outdoor-originated PM(2.5) or indoor-originated PM(2.5) and health effects. Results: The P(50) (P(25), P(75)) values of daily indoor PM(2.5), indoor-originated PM(2.5) and outdoor-originated PM(2.5) were 50.9 (26.8, 122.7), 16.0 (1.9, 43.7) and 27.3 (13.5, 61.8) μg/m(3), respectively. The mean±SD of concentrations of real-time indoor PM(2.5), indoor-originated PM(2.5) and outdoor-originated PM(2).5 were (61.5±58.8), (25.3±39.1) and (36.2±42.7) μg/m(3), respectively. Compared with outdoor-originated PM(2.5), indoor-originated PM(2.5) had significant associations with HRV and HR. Each 10 μg/m(3) increase at 4 h indoor-originated PM(2.5) and outdoor-originated PM(2.5) moving average was associated with 3.4% (95%CI: -4.7%, -2.1%) and 0.6% (95%CI: -2.0%, -0.8%) reduction in TP (P<0.001). Each 10 μg/m(3) increase at 12 h indoor-originated PM(2.5) moving average was associated with 7.6% (95%CI: -10.1%, -5.1%), 4.7% (95%CI: -6.7%, -2.7%), 3.3% (95%CI: -4.2%,-2.4%) and 3.0% (95%CI: -4.5%, -1.5%) reduction in HF, LF, SDNN and rMSSD, respectively. Each 10 μg/m(3) increase at 12 h outdoor-originated PM(2.5) moving average was associated with 0.7% (95%CI: -2.7%, -1.4%), 0.2% (95%CI: -1.9%, 1.4%), 0.7% (95%CI: -1.4%, -0.1%) and 0.2% (95%CI: -1.3%, 0.9%) reduction in HF, LF, SDNN and rMSSD, respectively (P<0.001). Each 10 μg/m(3) increase at 8 h indoor-originated PM(2.5) and outdoor-originated PM(2.5) moving average was associated with 0.7% (95%CI: 0.4%, 1.0%) and 0.4% (95%CI: 0.2%, 0.6%) increase in HR. Conclusion: Exposure to indoor-originated PM(2.5) was more strongly associations with HRV indices and HR compared with outdoor-originated PM(2.5) in male COPD patients.

Abstract
To analyze the clinical features of deep venous thrombosis(DVT) in hospitalized patients and evaluate the effectiveness of Padua risk assessment model. The clinical data of DVT patients were retrospectively analyzed in Beijing Shijitan Hospital from April 1 2017 to June 30, 2017.Padua risk assessment scale was used to evaluate the risk score of DVT in the departments of internal medicine and surgery. Effectiveness of predicting DVT was analyzed by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC).Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the related factors of DVT.In DVT group, age (OR=0.96),acute infection(OR=8.23),prothrombin time(OR=0.76),D dimer(OR=1.00),erythrocyte sedimentation rate(OR=1.02) and platelet count(OR=1.01) were significantly associated with thrombosis(all P<0.05).The specificity of Padua model to predict DVT in internal medical patients was better than the sensitivity(80.7% vs. 50%,P<0.05).Surgical patients reported similar findings with specificity to sensitivity of 87.5% vs. 67.5%(P<0.05).The area under curve of ROC in internal medical patients was more than that in surgical patients[0.62 (95%CI 0.59-0.67) vs.0.61(95%CI 0.56-0.66), P<0.05].Padua model is more specific than sensitive to predict DVT in hospitalized patients. It has better predictive value of DVT in internal medical patients than surgical patients.

Abstract
Broilers were used to determine the protective effects of Forsythia suspensa extract (FSE) against breast muscle oxidative injury induced by corticosterone (CS) mimicking pre-slaughter acute stress. A total of 144 male Arbor Acre broilers was randomly allotted to one of 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement that included FSE supplementation (0 or 100 mg/kg) and subcutaneous injection of CS (0 or 4 mg/kg) at 3 h before slaughter. Corticosterone increased live BW loss, and the adverse effect was attenuated by FSE in broilers subjected to CS (P < 0.05). Serum levels of CS, uric acid, and glucose were increased, and postmortem breast muscle pH values at 45 min and 24 h were decreased for CS-challenged broilers (P < 0.05). Corticosterone increased lightness and yellowness values and decreased redness of breast muscle (P < 0.05), and FSE decreased yellowness and increased redness of breast muscle (P < 0.05). Drip loss was increased by CS for birds supplemented without FSE (P < 0.05) and decreased by FSE for birds under CS challenge (P < 0.05). Corticosterone increased monounsaturated fatty acid (FA) and decreased polyunsaturated FA in breast muscle (P < 0.05), and saturated FA was decreased and polyunsaturated FA was increased by FSE (P < 0.05). Malondialdehyde and carbonyl contents in breast muscle were increased by CS and decreased by FSE (P < 0.05). Inhibition of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl was decreased by CS and increased by FSE (P < 0.05). The activities of total-antioxidant capacity, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase in breast muscle were lower in birds subjected to CS (P < 0.05) and were greater in birds supplemented with FSE (P < 0.05). Collectively, live BW loss and breast muscle oxidative injury were increased by CS in broilers, and these stress-related adverse effects could be attenuated by FSE supplementation via enhanced scavenging ability of free radicals and antioxidant capacity. Therefore, FSE could protect broilers against breast muscle oxidative injury when acute stress happens.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the correlation between the methylation of LIVIN gene and the pathogenesis of bone tumor at the molecular level, in order to improve the treatment method and enhance the cure rate of bone tumor. PATIENTS AND METHODS The expression level of Livin protein was detected using Western blot analysis, and its expressions in control group and patients were detected by immunohistochemistry. The methylation frequency of LIVIN gene was calculated by direct sequencing. Finally, the prognosis of treatment was investigated by follow-up. RESULTS The experiment found that Livin protein was not expressed in normal cells, while its expression rate was about 71.4% in 112 patients. The methylation frequency of LIVIN gene was gradually decreased with the increase of clinical stage, and had no significant relationship with age and sex. The prognosis experiment indicated that the lower the methylation frequency of LIVIN gene was, the shorter the survival time would be. CONCLUSIONS The methylation of LIVIN gene was closely related to the pathogenesis of bone tumor, which may be one of the important factors to induce the formation of a bone tumor. In addition, the methylation frequency of LIVIN gene could be used as a biomarker for the prognosis of bone tumor treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the effect of domestic high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifiers on the concentrations of indoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and its elementary constituents in 20 residences in a district of Beijing during winter. METHODS From November 2015 to January 2016, 20 residences in a district of Beijing were selected, where indoor and outdoor PM2.5 data were collected simultaneously in three time periods according to the operating of air purifiers (Group 0 h: 24 hours before operating; Group 24 h: 24 hours after operating; Group 48 h: 24 to 48 hours after operating). The content of 21 elements in PM2.5 samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Indoor/outdoor particle concentration ratio (I/O ratios) and ΔI/O ratios were used to describe the pollution levels and the variation range of PM2.5 and its 21 elementary constituents. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measurement data was applied to compare the I/O ratios of PM2.5 and its elementary constituents among the different groups, and Bonferroni method was used for comparison in pairs. Wilcoxon signed rank test for paired-samples was used to compare ΔI/O ratios of 21 elementary constituents with that of PM2.5. RESULTS The median I/O ratios of PM2.5 in the three groups were 1.27 (P25-P75: 0.50-2.68), 0.45 (P25-P75: 0.27-1.03) and 0.36 (P25-P75: 0.28-2.48), respectively. Compared with Group 0 h, the I/O ratios of PM2.5 in Group 24 h (P=0.042) and Group 48 h (P=0.006) decreased significantly. However, there was no significant difference between Group 24 h and Group 48 h. Significant differences were found comparing ΔI/O ratios of aluminium, ferrum and titanium to that of PM2.5, in both Group 24 h and Group 48 h (P<0.05). No significant change was found in the I/O ratios of these three elements among the three groups before and after air purifier operating (P>0.05). Distances from residences to traffic arteries could affect I/O ratios of some elements from traffic-related source (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Domestic HEPA air purifiers could effectively reduce indoor PM2.5 concentration, and the pollution level of PM2.5 tend to be stable after the purifier operating for a time. The purifiers had different effects on different elements, among which most showed statistical significances.

Abstract
To assess the cardiovascular benefits of protecting against particulate air pollution and noise, we conducted a randomized crossover study with 40 young healthy college students from March to May 2017 in the underground subway, Beijing. Participants each received 4 treatments (no intervention phase [NIP], respirator intervention phase [RIP], headphone intervention phase [HIP], respirator plus headphone intervention phase [RHIP]) in a randomized order during 4 different study periods with 2-week washout intervals. We measured personal exposure to particulate matter (PM), noise and electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters (heart rate variability (HRV), heart rate (HR) and ST segment changes), ambulatory blood pressure (BP) continuously for 4 hours to investigate the cardiovascular effects. Compared with NIP, most of the HRV parameters increased, especially high frequency (HF) [21.1% (95% CI: 15.7%, 26.9%), 18.2% (95% CI: 12.8%, 23.9%), and 35.5% (95% CI: 29.3%, 42.0%) in RIP, HIP, and RHIP, respectively], whereas ST segment elevation and HR decreased for all 3 modes of interventions. However, no significant differences were observed in BP among the 4 treatments. In summary, short-term wearing of a respirator and/or headphone may be an effective way to minimize cardiovascular risk induced by air pollution in the subway by improving autonomic nervous function.

Abstract
Associations between size-fractionated indoor particulate matter (PM) and black carbon (BC) and heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate (HR) in elderly women remain unclear. Twenty-nine healthy elderly women were measured for 24-hour HRV/HR indices. Real-time size-fractionated indoor PM and BC were monitored on the same day and on the preceding day. Mixed-effects models were applied to investigate the associations between pollutants and HRV/HR indices. Increases in size-fractionated indoor PM were significantly associated with declines in power in the high-frequency band (HF), power in the low-frequency band (LF), and standard deviation of all NN intervals (SDNN). The largest decline in HF was 19% at 5-minute moving average for an interquartile range (IQR) increase (24 μg/m3 ) in PM0.5 . The results showed that smaller particles could lead to greater reductions in HRV indices. The reported associations were modified by body mass index (BMI): Declines in HF at 5-minute average for an IQR increase in PM0.5 were 34.5% and 1.0% for overweight (BMI ≥25 kg/m2 ) and normal-weight (BMI <25 kg/m2 ) participants, respectively. Moreover, negative associations between BC and HRV indices were found to be significant in overweight participants. Increases in size-fractionated indoor PM and BC were associated with compromised cardiac autonomic function in healthy elderly women, especially overweight ones.

Abstract
Kiwifruit are a popular fruit worldwide; however, plant growth is threatened by abiotic stresses such as drought and high temperatures. Niacin treatment in plants has been shown to increase NADPH levels, thus enhancing abiotic stresses tolerance. Here, we evaluate the effect of niacin solution spray treatment on NADPH levels in the kiwifruit cultivars Hayward and Xuxiang. We found that spray treatment with niacin solution promoted NADPH and NADP+ levels and decreased both O2·- production and H2O2 contents in leaves during a short period. In fruit, NADPH contents increased during early development, but decreased later. However, no effect on NADP+ levels has been observed throughout fruit development. In summary, this report suggests that niacin may be used to increase NADPH oxidases, thus increasing stress-tolerance in kiwifruit during encounter of short-term stressful conditions.

Abstract
The secretion of the protease renin from renal juxtaglomerular cells is enhanced by subnormal extracellular calcium concentrations. The mechanisms underlying this atypical effect of calcium have not yet been unraveled. We therefore aimed to characterize the effect of extracellular calcium concentration on calcium handling of juxtaglomerular cells and on renin secretion in more detail. For this purpose, we used a combination of experiments with isolated perfused mouse kidneys and direct calcium measurements in renin-secreting cells in situ. We found that lowering of the extracellular calcium concentration led to a sustained elevation of renin secretion. Electron-microscopical analysis of renin-secreting cells exposed to subnormal extracellular calcium concentrations revealed big omega-shaped structures resulting from the intracellular fusion and subsequent emptying of renin storage vesicles. The calcium concentration dependencies as well as the kinetics of changes were rather similar for renin secretion and for renovascular resistance. Since vascular resistance is fundamentally influenced by myosin light chain kinase (MLCK), myosin light chain phosphatase (MLCP), and Rho-associated protein kinase (Rho-K) activities, we examined the effects of MLCK-, MLCP-, and Rho-K inhibitors on renin secretion. Only MLCK inhibition stimulated renin secretion. Conversely, inhibition of MCLP activity lowered perfusate flow and strongly inhibited renin secretion, which could not be reversed by lowering of the extracellular calcium concentration. Renin-secreting cells and smooth muscle cells of afferent arterioles showed immunoreactivity of MLCK. These findings suggest that the inhibitory effect of calcium on renin secretion could be explained by phosphorylation-dependent processes under control of the MLCK.

Abstract
Background Data about factors driving accrual to radiation oncology trials are limited. In oncology, 30%-40% of trials are considered unsuccessful, many because of poor accrual. The goal of the present study was to inform the design of future trials by evaluating the effects of institutional, clinician, and patient factors on accrual rates to a randomized radiation oncology trial. Methods Investigators participating in sabr-comet (NCT01446744), a randomized phase ii trial open in Canada, Europe, and Australia that is evaluating the role of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (sabr) in oligometastatic disease, were invited to complete a survey about factors affecting accrual. Institutional ethics approval was obtained. The primary endpoint was the annual accrual rate per institution. Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to identify factors predictive of annual accrual rates. Results On univariable linear regression analysis, off-trial availability of sabr (p = 0.014) and equipoise of the referring physician (p = 0.014) were found to be predictive of annual accrual rates. The annual accrual rates were lower when centres offered sabr for oligometastases off-trial (median: 3.7 patients vs. 8.4 patients enrolled) and when referring physicians felt that, compared with having equipoise, sabr was beneficial (median: 4.8 patients vs. 8.4 patients enrolled). Multivariable analysis identified perceived level of equipoise of the referring physician to be predictive of the annual accrual rate (p = 0.023). Conclusions The level of equipoise of referring physicians might play a key role in accrual to radiation oncology randomized controlled trials. Efforts to communicate with and educate referring physicians might therefore be beneficial for improving trial accrual rates.

Abstract
These studies evaluated the effects of probiotics (PB) as a potential substitute for antibiotics (AB) on diarrhea in relation to immune responses and intestinal health in weaned pigs challenged with enterotoxigenic (ETEC) K88 (Exp. 1) and the effects of PB on performance and nutrient digestibility in weaned pigs (Exp. 2). In Exp. 1, 24 weaned barrows (4.9 ± 0.4 kg initial BW) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments. The treatments consisted of pigs fed an unsupplemented corn-soybean meal basal diet and not challenged (NON-C) or challenged with ETEC K88 (CHA-C) on d 9 and pigs fed the same basal diet supplemented with AB (100 mg/kg zinc bacitracin, 50 mg/kg colistin sulfate, and 100 mg/kg olaquindox; CHA-AB) or 500 mg/kg PB ( and ; CHA-PB) and challenged with ETEC K88 on d 9. In Exp. 2, 108 weaned pigs (7.5 ± 0.9 kg initial BW) not challenged with ETEC K88 were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments, including an AB-free basal diet (CON) and the basal diet with AB (ABD) or 500 mg/kg PB supplementation (PBD). In Exp. 1, after challenge, CHA-C decreased ( < 0.05) ADG and ADFI, whereas CHA-AB and CHA-PB revealed no significant change compared with NON-C. Compared with CHA-C, CHA-AB and CHA-PB improved ( < 0.05) ADG and ADFI and decreased ( < 0.05) the diarrhea incidence in pigs. Mucosal secretory Ig A contents in the jejunum and ileum were greater in CHA-C than in NON-C ( < 0.05) and lower than in CHA-PB ( < 0.05). The diet containing PB alleviated the increase in the endotoxin and diamine oxidase concentration and cecal count ( < 0.05) and the decrease in intestinal villus height, cecal count, and jejunal mucosal occludin protein abundance ( < 0.05). In Exp. 2, dietary supplementation with AB and PB had positive effects on ADG and feed efficiency ( < 0.05). Compared with CON, apparent digestibility of nutrients in PBD was improved ( < 0.05). Collectively, PB supplementation protected the pigs against ETEC K88 infection by enhancing immune responses and attenuating intestinal damage and improved the performance and nutrient digestibility of weaned pigs. Therefore, PB could be a potential effective alternative to AB for ameliorating diarrhea and improving performance in weaned pigs.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) to reflect the progression of renal fibrosis (RF) induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in rabbits. Methods: Total of 32 New Zealand white rabbits (aged 4-5 months) were used to establish the UUO model (RF group) and were divided into 4 subgroups (including RF-2W group, RF-4W group , RF-6W group and RF-8W group) according to the duration of obstruction(2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks). Another 8 rabbits, underwent sham operation, were used as the control group (Sham group). T2 weighted imaging (T(2)WI) and SWI sequences were performed on the rabbits at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks after UUO, respectively. Rabbits were sacrificed and specimens were obtained after MR examination, then hematoxylin&eosin staining and Masson staining were performed to explore the renal tubular injury and interstitial fibrosis. The relationship between the relative signal-to-noise ratio(rSNR)measured on the SWI fusion maps and the degree of renal fibrosis was analyzed. Analysis of variance was used to compare the difference of rSNRs among 5 groups. Results: The rSNRs of the inner medulla gradually decreased over time, the rSNRs of Sham group, RF-2W group, RF-4W group, RF-6W group and RF-8W group was 2.29±0.18, 1.73±0.30, 1.67±0.08, 1.42±0.28, 1.12±0.15, respectively (F=25.876, P<0.01). In RF-2W group, the rSNRs of the outer medulla and cortex increased when compared with those in the Sham group, then they decreased gradually over time in the other groups (F=5.230, 7.621, both P<0.05). The pathological results demonstrated that the morphology of renal tubules in Sham group was normal and no apoptosis or necrosis was seen in the tubular epithelial cells. In the RF-2W group, the main pathological manifestations included renal tubules dilatation, tubular epithelial cell degeneration or necrosis and the infiltration of inflammatory cell. In Masson staining, lots of blue areas were present in the interstitial. As the obstruction time prolonged, the renal tubular collapse, inflammatory cells and fibroblasts increased significantly. Meanwhile blue area also increased significantly in Masson staining. Conclusion: SWI can be used as a noninvasive method to evaluate the pathological progression of fibrosis in the rabbit UUO model.

Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the effect of short-term exposure to ambient NO(2) has influence on lung function and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Methods: A panel of doctor-diagnosed stable COPD patients (n=33) were recruited and repeatedly measured for lung function and FeNO from December 2013 to October 2014. The patients who lived in Beijing for more than one year and aged between 60 and 85 years old were included in the study. We excluded patients with asthma, bronchial tensor, lung cancer and other respiratory disorders other than chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and occupational exposure and chest trauma surgery patients. Because the frequency of each subject visiting to the hospital was different, a total of 170 times of lung function measurements and 215 times of FeNO measurements were conducted. At the same time, the atmospheric NO(2) data of Beijing environmental monitoring station near the residence of each patient during the study period were collected from 1 day to 7 days lag before the measurement. Effects of short-term NO(2) exposure on lung function and FeNO in COPD patients were estimated by linear mixed-effects models. Results: The subjects' forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV(1)), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and exhaled NO of subjects were (3.26±0.83) L, (1.66±0.61) L, (4.13±1.77) L/s, and (48.99±14.30) μg/m(3), respectively. The concentration of NO(2) was (70.3±34.2) μg/m(3) and the interquartile range (IQR) was 39.0 μg/m(3). Short-term exposure to NO(2) resulted in a significant decrease in FVC among COPD patients' which was most obvious in 2 days lag. Every quartile range increased in NO(2) (39 μg/m(3), 2 day) would cause a 1.84% (95%CI: -3.20%- -0.48%) reduction in FVC. The effects of exposure to higher concentration of NO(2) (≥58.0 μg/m(3)) on FVC estimate was -2.32% (95%CI: -4.15%- -0.48%)(P=0.02). No significant relevance of FeNO and NO(2) was observed in this study. Conclusions: Short term exposure to ambient NO(2) may bring down pulmonary function in COPD patients.

Concentration of digestible and metabolizable energy, standardized ileal digestibility, and growth performance of pigs fed diets containing sorghum produced in the United States or corn produced in China. J Anim Sci 2017; 95:4880-4892. Abstract
The DE and ME content (Exp. 1) as well as the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of essential AA (EAA; Exp. 2) were compared between Chinese corn and U.S. sorghum. The effects of U.S. sorghum as a potential substitute for Chinese corn on growth performance of 114 weaned pigs (8.8 ± 1.0 kg BW; Exp. 3) and 60 growing pigs (23.4 ± 1.6 kg BW; Exp. 4) were evaluated, and the effect of protease supplementation on N utilization was determined in sorghum-based diets fed to growing pigs (Exp. 4). In Exp. 1, there was no difference in DE and ME content between corn and sorghum. In Exp. 2, the AID and SID of most EAA and the concentrations of standardized ileal digestible Lys, Met, Thr, and His were less in sorghum than in corn ( < 0.05). In Exp. 3, there was no difference in ADG and ADFI among treatments during the experimental period. The G:F and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of CP was decreased for pigs fed diets with sorghum in the first 2 wk ( < 0.05) and for pigs fed diets containing 60% sorghum in the following 2 wk ( < 0.05). The fecal score for pigs fed diets with sorghum, regardless of the substitute level, was less ( < 0.05) or tended to be less ( = 0.086) than that for pigs fed diets containing 60% corn. In Exp. 4, no differences were observed in ADG and ADFI overall among pigs fed diets based on corn and soybean meal (CSBM) or sorghum and soybean meal (SSBM). Pigs fed CSBM or SSBM with protease supplementation had greater ( < 0.05) or tended to have greater ( = 0.062) G:F than pigs fed SSBM. Compared with CSBM, SSBM increased fecal N excretion by more than 25% and decreased the ATTD of CP by more than 7% during the whole experiment ( < 0.05). Protease supplementation reduced fecal N excretion by more than 12% and increased ATTD of CP by more than 6% ( < 0.05). In conclusion, based on optimal G:F and CP digestibility, diets for weaned pigs should contain less than 20% sorghum during the first 2 wk and no more than 40% during the subsequent 2 wk after weaning. Sorghum used as an alternative energy source for corn in diets fed to growing pigs decreases CP utilization by increasing manure N output, which might be partially offset by protease supplementation.
