Abstract
The heptadentate ligand L was shown to form an extremely stable Gd complex at neutral pH with a pGd value of 18.4 at pH 7.4. The X-ray crystal structures of the complexes formed with Gd and Tb displayed two very different coordination behaviors being, respectively, octa- and nonacoordinated. The relaxometric properties of the Gd complex were studied by field-dependent relaxivity measurements at various temperatures and by 17 O NMR spectroscopy. The pH-dependence of the longitudinal relaxivity profile indicated large changes around neutral pH leading to a very large value of 10.1 mm-1 ⋅s-1 (60 MHz, 298 K) at pH 4.7. The changes were attributed to an increase of the hydration number from one water molecule in basic conditions to two at acidic pH. A similar trend was observed for the luminescence of the Eu complex, confirming the change in hydration state. DOSY experiments were performed on the Lu analogue, pointing to the absence of dimers in solution in the considered pH range. A breathing mode of the complex was postulated, which was further supported by 1 H and 31 P NMR spectroscopy of the Yb complex at varying pH and was finally modeled by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Piling up excited states to reach upconversion (UC) is severely restricted by vibrational quenching mechanisms, especially when one looks at discrete molecular entities in solution. By carefully controlling the supramolecular assembly processes resulting from the strong electrostatic interactions between negatively charged Yb complexes and Tb3+ cations in aqueous solutions, we engineered the formation of heteropolynuclear complexes of [(YbL)2Tb x] compositions ( x = 1 and 2). These edifices display a phenomenon of cooperative photosensitization UC with green emission of the Tb cations upon NIR excitation at 980 nm in the Yb absorption band. The photophysical properties of the complexes were carefully investigated by steady-state and time-resolved luminescence experiments in D2O, allowing one to quantify the impact of the composition and pD of the solution on the emission intensity as well as clarifying the exact cooperative photosensitization upconversion mechanism. Using optimized conditions, the energy transfer UC process could be observed for the first time in nondeuterated water with discrete molecular compounds.

Abstract
The release of uranyl(VI) is a hazardous environmental issue, with limited ways to monitor accumulation in situ. Here, we present a method for the detection of uranyl(VI) ions through the utilization of a unique fluorescence energy transfer process to europium(III). Our system displays the first example of a "turn-on" europium(III) emission process with a small, water-soluble lanthanide complex triggered by uranyl(VI) ions.

Abstract
In the presence of fluoride anions, [LnL(H2 O)]+ complexes, based on the coordination of a lanthanide (Ln) cation into the cavity of a C2v symmetrical cyclen-based ligand (L), self-assemble in water to form [(LnL)2 F]+ dimers. The crystal structures of the Yb hydrated monomer and of the fluorinated dimer are reported and analyzed to unravel the impact of the cumulative effect of weak hydrogen bonding and aromatic stacking interactions in the supramolecular assembly. The assembly is stable over a broad range of pH 3-8. A combination of equimolar amounts of Eu and Tb complexes led to a quasistatistical mixture of homo- and heterodimers, as observed by using electrospray mass spectrometry. In the heterodimers, selective excitation into the 7 F6 →5 D4 absorption band of the Tb center at λ=488 nm allowed the observation of a Tb-to-Eu downshifting energy transfer, not observed in the absence of fluoride ions. Analysis of the excited-state lifetimes of the dimers within the frame of the Förster theory of energy transfer showed the transfer to have an efficiency of 34 %, with a corresponding Förster radius of 4.1 Å; thereby, unraveling the short Ln-Ln distance as a crucial parameter of the energy-transfer process. By using equimolar mixtures of the Tb and Eu complexes, the energy-transfer phenomenon was used for a ratiometric sensing of fluoride anions in water with a detection limit of 17.7 nm.

Abstract
Up conversion is an Anti-Stokes luminescent process by which photons of low energy are piled up to generate light at a higher energy. Here we show that the addition of fluoride anions to a D2O solution of a macrocyclic erbium complex leads to the formation of a supramolecular [(ErL)2F]+ assembly in which fluoride is sandwiched between two complexes, held together by the synergistic interactions of the Er-F-Er bridging bond, four intercomplex hydrogen bonds and two aromatic stacking interactions. Room temperature excitation into the Er absorption bands at 980 nm of a solution of the complex in D2O results in the observation of up converted emission at 525, 550 and 650 nm attributed to Er centred transitions via a two-step excitation. The up conversion signal is dramatically increased upon formation of the [(ErL)2F]+ dimer in the presence of 0.5 equivalents of fluoride anions. Up conversion is an Anti-Stokes luminescent process by which photons of low energy are piled up to generate light at a higher energy. Here, the authors report a supramolecular assembly of fluoride-bridged erbium complexes which exhibit this behaviour in D2O solution at room temperature.

Abstract
A novel two-step approach for quantum dot (QD) functionalization and bioconjugation is presented, which yields ultra-compact, stable, and highly luminescent antibody-QD conjugates suitable for use in FRET immunoassays. Hydrophobic InPZnS/ZnSe/ZnS (emission wavelength: 530 nm), CdSe/ZnS (605 nm), and CdSeTe/ZnS (705 nm) QDs were surface functionalized with zwitterionic penicillamine, enabling aqueous phase transfer under conservation of the photoluminescence properties. Post-functionalization with a heterobifunctional crosslinker, containing a lipoic acid group and a maleimide function, enabled the subsequent coupling to sulfhydryl groups of proteins. This was demonstrated by QD conjugation with fragmented antibodies (F(ab)). The obtained F(ab)-QD conjugates range among the smallest antibody-functionalized nanoprobes ever reported, with a hydrodynamic diameter <13 nm, PL quantum yield up to 66% at 705 nm, and colloidal stability of several months in various buffers. They were applied as FRET acceptors in homogeneous, time-gated immunoassays using Tb-antibodies as FRET donors, both coupled by an immunological sandwich complex between the two antibodies and a PSA (prostate specific antigen) biomarker. The advantages of the compact surface coating for FRET could be demonstrated by an 6.2 and 2.5 fold improvement of the limit of detection (LOD) for PSA compared to commercially available hydrophilic QDs emitting at 605 and 705 nm, respectively. While the commercial QDs contain identical inorganic cores responsible for their fluorescence, they are coated with a comparably thick amphiphilic polymer layer leading to much larger hydrodynamic diameters (>26 nm without biomolecules). The LODs of 0.8 and 3.7 ng mL(-1) obtained in 50 μL serum samples are below the clinical cut-off level of PSA (4 ng mL(-1)) and demonstrate their direct applicability in clinical diagnostics.

Invited for this month's cover are the collaborating groups of Dr. Loïc J. Charbonnière at CNRS/Université de Strasbourg, France and Dr. Ka-Leung Wong at Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong. The cover picture shows terbium-doped LaF3 nanoparticles that are surface functionalized by photon-harvesting antenna ligands. Surface capping with antenna ligands leads to ultrabright nanoparticles, with the typical green luminescence signature of the Tb atoms and very long excited-state lifetimes. Abstract
Two synthetic approaches-temperature variation and anion templation-allowed for the selective formation of a [2]catenane ([2]C4+ ) or a trefoil knot (TK6+ ), or for the enhanced formation of a Solomon link (SL8+ ), all from a simple set of starting materials (Zn(ii) acetate, diformylpyridine (DFP) and a diamino-2,2'-bipyridine (DAB)) in mixed aqueous solutions. The catenane formed exclusively at 90 °C in a 1 : 1 mixed solvent of D2O and MeOD. In the presence of bromide ion as template, TK6+ formed exclusively at 50 °C in the same solvent. In the solid state, TK6+ hosts two bromide ions in its central cavity by forming six Csp2 -H hydrogen bonds. In D2O, TK6+ , which was originally prepared as a trifluoroacetate (TFA) salt, was found to exchange two TFA counterions for two monovalent anions of different sizes and shapes, which lodged within the knot's central cavity. In contrast to bromide, the larger triflate anion (CF3SO3-) promoted the formation of SL8+ , which was characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Two dimensional heteronuclear 19F-1H-HOSEY NMR experiments detected CH···F interactions inside the cavity of SL8+ . Thus, the product distribution of this dynamic link forming system is sensitive to temperature and the size and shape of the anion template, and one of the products, TK6+ , is capable of binding a variety of monovalent anions in D2O with high affinity (with log β2 values of 4 to 6 being typical).
