Abstract
The study aimed to perform a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to access the effects of red clover isoflavones on the blood lipid profile of both perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SciELO, and Cochrane Library were searched for the terms 'red clover', 'Trifolium pratense', and 'randomized controlled trial' during November 2017. Summary measures were reported as weighted mean differences (WMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Fixed or random effects models were used for meta-analyses, according to heterogeneity. Risk of bias was measured with the Cochrane tool. Twelve RCTs (totalizing 1284 perimenopausal and postmenopausal women receiving red clover isoflavones for 4 weeks-18 months) resulted in a significant decrease in total cholesterol (WMD = -12.34 mg/dl; 95% CI: -18.21, -6.48), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (WMD = -10.61 mg/dl; 95% CI: -15.51, -5.72), and triglycerides (WMD = -10.18 mg/dl; 95% CI: -16.23, -4.13) together with a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (WMD = 1.60 mg/dl; 95% CI: 0.17, 3.03). In conclusion, the results demonstrate that the ingestion of red clover may have a beneficial effect on the lipid profile of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Abstract
European populations display low genetic differentiation as the result of long-term blending of their ancient founding ancestries. However, it is unclear how the combination of ancient ancestries related to early foragers, Neolithic farmers, and Bronze Age nomadic pastoralists can explain the distribution of genetic variation across Europe. Populations in natural crossroads like the Italian peninsula are expected to recapitulate the continental diversity, but have been systematically understudied. Here, we characterize the ancestry profiles of Italian populations using a genome-wide dataset representative of modern and ancient samples from across Italy, Europe, and the rest of the world. Italian genomes capture several ancient signatures, including a non-steppe contribution derived ultimately from the Caucasus. Differences in ancestry composition, as the result of migration and admixture, have generated in Italy the largest degree of population structure detected so far in the continent, as well as shaping the amount of Neanderthal DNA in modern-day populations.

Abstract
The assessment of wine authenticity is of utmost importance in the current context of a growing market globalization. The strontium isotopic ratio 87Sr/86Sr is a well-established tool for dating and tracing the origin of rocks and minerals with special interest for wine traceability. A study was developed to examine the variation of 87Sr/86Sr in wines from Douro Valley taking into account the effects of vineyard location and grape variety. The 87Sr/86Sr of soils and wines from six vineyards were determined by using an ICP-MS based analytical procedure. A total of twenty-two monovarietal wines, obtained at micro vinification scale, from relevant white and red grapevine varieties for Douro region, were analysed. The range of 87Sr/86Sr values observed in soils and wines was of 0.708–0.725 and 0.711–0.717, respectively. The present study updates the scarce knowledge available on strontium isotopic ratios in soils and wines from Douro Valley, and its results will enlarge global databank on wine composition and support comparison with other world regions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Melon shows a broad diversity in fruit morphology and quality, which is still underexploited in breeding programs. The knowledge of the genetic basis of fruit quality traits is important for identifying new alleles that may be introduced in elite material by highly efficient molecular breeding tools. RESULTS In order to identify QTLs controlling fruit quality, a recombinant inbred line population was developed using two commercial cultivars as parental lines: "Védrantais", from the cantalupensis group, and "Piel de Sapo", from the inodorus group. Both have desirable quality traits for the market, but their fruits differ in traits such as rind and flesh color, sugar content, ripening behavior, size and shape. We used a genotyping-by-sequencing strategy to construct a dense genetic map, which included around five thousand variants distributed in 824 bins. The RIL population was phenotyped for quality and morphology traits, and we mapped 33 stable QTLs involved in sugar and carotenoid content, fruit and seed morphology and major loci controlling external color of immature fruit and mottled rind. The median confidence interval of the QTLs was 942 kb, suggesting that the high density of the genetic map helped in increasing the mapping resolution. Some of these intervals contained less than a hundred annotated genes, and an integrative strategy combining gene expression and resequencing data enabled identification of candidate genes for some of these traits. CONCLUSION Several QTLs controlling fruit quality traits in melon were identified and delimited to narrow genomic intervals, using a RIL population and a GBS-based genetic map.

Abstract
This study was designed to characterize cortical bone by histomorphometry in a predialysis population, to correlate turnover, mineralization, and volume between cortical and trabecular bone, and to compare the findings with those in patients treated with maintenance dialysis. We evaluated cortical bone by histomorphometry in 16 patients with stage 3 or stage 4 chronic kidney disease and in 16 dialysis patients. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the distal end of the forearm was performed in seven predialysis patients, and the findings correlated with histologic parameters. Predialysis patients compared with dialysis patients showed increased cortical bone thickness (p = 0.027) and decreased osteonal bone formation rate (p = 0.020) and adjusted apposition rate (p = 0.018), mainly for external cortical bone. In this predialysis population, trabecular bone volume positively correlated with external cortical porosity (r = 0.723, p = 0.003), external cortical thickness (r = 0.569, p = 0.034), and external osteonal accumulation (osteonal osteoid thickness, r = 0.530, p = 0.05; osteonal osteoid volume to bone volume ratio, r = 0.921, p < 0.001; and osteonal osteoid surface to bone surface ratio, r = 0.631, p = 0.016). These correlations were not observed in the internal cortical bone. Cortical osteonal mineralization surface negatively correlated with DXA Z and T scores and bone mineral density for the distal end of the forearm. The osteonal bone formation rate of both internal cortical bone and external cortical bone correlated with Z score (r = -0.975, p = 0.005 and r = -0.880, p = 0.021 respectively). We found no significant correlations between cortical thickness or porosity and DXA parameters for either external cortical bone or internal cortical bone. Our results suggest that a greater degree of kidney disease is associated with thinner cortices, eventually contributing to the higher fracture rate observed in the chronic kidney disease population. In predialysis patients, parathyroid hormone seems to have a modulating effect on both trabecular bone and cortical bone, particularly in external cortical bone.

Abstract
Compact gamma cameras with a square-shaped monolithic scintillator crystal and an array of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are actively being developed for applications in areas such as small animal imaging, cancer diagnostics and radiotracer guided surgery. Statistical methods of position reconstruction, which are potentially superior to the traditional centroid method, require accurate knowledge of the spatial response of each photomultiplier. Using both Monte Carlo simulations and experimental data obtained with a camera prototype, we show that the spatial response of all photomultipliers (light response functions) can be parameterized with axially symmetric functions obtained iteratively from flood field irradiation data. The study was performed with a camera prototype equipped with a 30 × 30 × 2 mm3 LYSO crystal and an 8 × 8 array of SiPMs for 140 keV gamma rays. The simulations demonstrate that the images, reconstructed with the maximum likelihood method using the response obtained with the iterative approach, exhibit only minor distortions: the average difference between the reconstructed and the true positions in X and Y directions does not exceed 0.2 mm in the central area of 22 × 22 mm2 and 0.4 mm at the periphery of the camera. A similar level of image distortions is shown experimentally with the camera prototype.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Allograft renal vein thrombosis is a rare complication of kidney transplantation. Most cases occur in the first 2 weeks after transplantation, but there are cases described many years after the transplant surgery. Allograft loss is the usual outcome. METHODS We present a case of a renal transplant recipient with allograft renal vein thrombosis associated with deep venous thrombosis of a lower limb, 9 years after transplantation. He was successfully treated with anticoagulation alone, with recovery of allograft function. RESULTS The patient was given unfractioned heparin and elastic compression stockings. Five days later, the patient recovered diuresis and hemodialysis treatment was discontinued. Doppler ultrasound was done and revealed partial re-permeabilization of allograft renal vein, with maximal velocity of 15 cm/s. After 30 months of follow-up, the patient was maintained on oral anticoagulation with warfarin, and no thromboembolic or hemorrhagic events were documented. The patient's serum creatinine was stable, between 1.6 and 1.8 mg/dL. CONCLUSIONS Our patient demonstrated that anticoagulation alone and dialytic support might be able to promote total recovery of allograft function after renal vein thrombosis.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Few studies have examined the relationship between more-than-minimal-trauma fractures and bone density. This study demonstrated that more-than-minimal-trauma fractures are associated with lower bone density similar to that seen in minimal trauma fractures. Men and women over 50 years with a more-than-minimal-trauma fracture should be investigated to exclude low bone density. INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and predictors of low bone density in men and women with more-than-minimal-trauma fractures. METHODS In an Australian hospital, 630 community-dwelling men and women, 20 years of age or older, sustained a fracture due to more-than-minimal-trauma (force greater than a fall from standing height but less than high trauma). We studied 349 individuals who agreed to have a bone mineral density (BMD) scan. These participants were compared with 472 men and women with minimal trauma fractures. RESULTS Men and women with more-than-minimal-trauma fractures had significantly lower bone density than expected for their age, gender and weight (Z-scorespine = -0.4 SD, 95 % confidence interval (CI), -0.5 to -0.3; Z-scorehip = -0.5 SD, 95 % CI, -0.6 to -0.4). Almost 1 in 4 of those over 50 years of age had osteoporosis by BMD criteria. The independent predictors of low bone density (T-score <-2.0 SD) were age equal to or over 50 years (odds ratio (OR) = 5.97, 95 % CI, 3.34 to 10.65), low body weight <20 kg/m2 (OR = 3.44, 95 % CI, 1.32 to 8.94), a prior minimal trauma fracture (OR = 2.76, 95 % CI, 1.17-6.52) and in those over 50 years of age, an osteoporosis-associated condition (OR = 4.51, 95 % CI, 1.69 to 12.06). Men and women with more-than-minimal-trauma fractures had similar bone density (Z-score) compared to those with minimal trauma fractures. CONCLUSIONS Men and women over 50 years with a more-than-minimal-trauma fracture, especially those with low body weight, prior minimal trauma fracture or an osteoporosis-associated condition, should be investigated to exclude low bone density and its associated risk of subsequent fractures.
