Abstract
There are limited data regarding changes in oxidative and antioxidant enzymes induced by simulated or actual weightlessness, and any additional information would provide insight into potential mechanisms involving other changes observed in muscles from animals previously flown in space. Thus, the NASA Biospecimen Sharing Program was an opportunity to collect valuable information. Oxidative and antioxidant enzyme levels, as well as lipid perioxidation, were measured in respiratory muscles from rats flown on board Space Shuttle mission STS-54. The results indicated that there was an increasing trend in citrate synthase activity in the flight diaphragm when compared to ground based controls, and there were no significant changes observed in the intercostal muscles for any of the parameters. However, lipid peroxidation was significantly (p<0.05) decreased in the flight diaphragm. These results indicate that 6 day exposure to microgravity may have a different effect on oxidative and antioxidant activity in rat respiratory muscles when compared to data from previous 14 day hindlimb suspension studies.

Abstract
RATIONALE The ability of caffeine to condition liking for flavours depends on the caffeine deprivation status of subjects; however, it is not known if a latent liking for a flavour can be acquired in an undeprived state, which subsequently emerges when consumers are caffeine deprived. OBJECTIVES To determine if exposure of undeprived caffeine consumers to a novel drink containing caffeine leads to increased liking for this drink when they are subsequently tested when caffeine-deprived. METHODS In a double-blind placebo controlled study, four groups of 13 moderate caffeine consumers evaluated a novel flavoured drink on 5 days. The test group consumed this drink with 100 mg caffeine when undeprived on days 1-4, and in a deprived state on day 5. Three control groups had the same conditions on all 5 days, with an undeprived group receiving the caffeinated drink, and two deprived groups receiving the drink with caffeine or placebo. RESULTS The pleasantness of the drink did not change over the 4 training days in the test group, and did not alter when this group was tested when caffeine-deprived. At no stage did these ratings differ between the test and undeprived control groups. Pleasantness increased significantly over the 5 days in the deprived group who received caffeine, and decreased in the deprived group who received placebo. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that repeated pairing of a novel flavour with the effects of caffeine in subjects who are not caffeine deprived does not lead to an emergent liking for that flavour when subsequently tested caffeine-deprived. However, the pleasantness of the same caffeinated drink increased if it was consumed when caffeine deprived.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To test whether the palatability of a test meal altered compensatory eating following disguised high-energy fat and carbohydrate preloads. DESIGN Effects of preload energy (low, 265 kJ, or high, 1510 kJ) and test-meal palatability (bland or palatable) were contrasted within-subjects, with a between-subjects contrast of fat and carbohydrate preloads. SUBJECTS Twenty-four healthy, normal men (age 23.6+/-1.0 y, (body mass index) BMI 21.3+/-0.5). MEASUREMENTS Microstructural analysis of test meal intake and rated appetite in the four test conditions, plus diary-based weighed intake analysis of energy intake post-lunch. RESULTS Subjects ate significantly less at lunch after disguised high-energy fat or carbohydrate preloads relative to the low-energy preload, and ate significantly more of the palatable than bland lunch in all conditions. The reduction in eating following the high-energy preload was significantly less in the palatable condition. Intake post-lunch did not differ between conditions, and overall subjects had higher daily energy intake on the days they consumed the high-energy preloads. Rated hunger was significantly less 30 min after the high- than low-energy preloads, but increased on tasting the palatable food in all conditions. The high-energy preloads suppressed appetite immediately post-lunch. No differences between fat and carbohydrate were found on any measure. CONCLUSIONS Manipulation of the palatability of a test meal modified the ability to respond to disguised high-energy preloads, with over-consumption most evident when disguised high-energy preloads were followed by a palatable food. Subsequent voluntary intake compensated for over-consumption of the palatable lunch, but not the high-energy preload.

Abstract
The effects of the actual and labelled fat content of a soup preload on appetite at a test meal 30 min later were assessed in 16 healthy men. Each participant ate lunch on four occasions, combining two levels of fat energy (Low, 265 kJ or High, 1510 kJ) and two types of label (Low-fat or High-fat), presented as fictitious soup brand names. Preliminary work established that the Low-fat labels produced an expectation of reduced fat content and lower anticipated hedonic ratings, whereas the High-fat labels generated expectations of a high-fat content and above average hedonic ratings. These expectancies were confirmed in the main experiment, with the soups labelled as high fat rated as both more pleasant and creamy than those labelled low-fat, independent of actual fat content. However, intake at the test meal was unaffected by the preload label, but instead reflected the actual fat (hence, energy) content of the soup, with significantly lower food intake after the high-fat soup regardless of the food label. Rated hunger was lower, and fullness higher, at the start of the meal after the high-fat preloads regardless of how they were labelled, while the pattern of appetite change during the test meal was unaffected by preload. These results suggest that realistic food labels can modify the immediate experience of a consumed food, but do not alter appetite 30 min later in healthy men.

Abstract
A variety of microbial dechlorination mechanisms have been demonstrated in laboratory microcosms, pure cultures, and in situ sedimentary environments. New perspectives on in situ processes from these efforts allow the design of more realistic bioremediation strategies that complement natural processes regardless of whether the strategy used is one of engineered accelerated bioremediation or natural attenuation. Since 1994 the scientific community has acquired considerable knowledge regarding natural attenuation of organochlorine compounds. Natural attenuation of chlorinated solvents has been documented at a number of field sites. Reductive dechlorination driven by co-contaminants or naturally occurring organics as substrates in combination with aerobic or co-metabolic degradation contains certain chlorinated solvent plumes. Although natural attenuation is not a panacea, at sites where it is applicable, it offers a scientifically sound, cost-effective method to remediate groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents.

Abstract
Many pathogenic and commensal organisms are multidrug resistant due to exposure to various antibiotics. Often, this antimicrobial resistance is encoded by integrons that occur on plasmids or that are integrated into the bacterial chromosome. Integrons are commonly associated with bacterial genera in the family Enterobacteriaceae. We determined that class 1 integrases were present in approximately 46% of the isolates from the family Enterobacteriaceae; class 2 integrases were present only among Escherichia coli and Salmonella isolates. Seven percent of veterinary isolates were positive for class 3 integrase by DNA-DNA hybridization but could not be confirmed to be positive by PCR. None of the veterinary isolates possessed the class 4 integrase gene. The distribution of these integrase genes was variable within the members of the family Enterobacteriaceae when some or all integrase classes were absent from a particular genus. There was also considerable variability in the distribution of these integrases within a species, depending on the animal host. Unlike the class 1 integrases, the other integrase class, intI2, appears to be more restricted in its distribution among the members of the family Enterobacteriaceae. There is also considerable variability in the distribution of the class 1 integrases within E. coli strains isolated from different food animals. The class 1 integrases are the most widely disseminated of the four classes among the members of the family Enterobacteriaceae from both the clinical and normal flora of animals. This is the first report to closely examine the distribution of class 2 integrases in members of the family Enterobacteriaceae isolated in the United States.

Abstract
A library of 85000 microbial fermentation extracts was screened for inhibitors of multidrug resistance efflux pumps in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. New compounds EA-371alpha and EA-371delta were isolated and demonstrated to be potent and specific inhibitors of the MexAB-OprM pump in P. aeruginosa. Two series of fungal metabolites, enniatins and beauvericins, were found to be ubiquitous and potent inhibitors of ABC transporters. Milbemycins were rediscovered as potent inhibitors of the CDRI pump in C. albicans, and demonstrated to potentiate effectively the antifungal activity of fluconazole and SCH-56592 against a wide variety of Candida clinical isolates.

Abstract
Hydrogenation of the C(4') exocyclic olefin of the pacidamycins has been shown to produce a series of semisynthetic compounds, the dihydropacidamycins, with antimicrobial activity similar to that of the natural products. Elucidation of stereochemistry in the pacidamycins has been completed through a campaign of natural product degradation experiments in combination with the total synthesis of the lowest-molecular weight dihydropacidamycin, dihydropacidamycin D. The stereochemical identities of the tryptophan and two alanine residues contained in pacidamycin D have been shown to be of the natural (S) configuration, and the unique 3-methylamino-2-aminobutyric acid contained in this series of antibiotics has been shown to be of the (2S,3S) configuration. Finally, the stereochemistry obtained by hydrogenation of the C(4')-C(5') exocyclic olefin has been shown to be (R) at the C(4') nucleoside site.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To genetically type Campylobacter jejuni isolates from broiler houses or the external environment to identify the source of Campylobacter organisms in broiler chickens. SAMPLE POPULATION Environmental samples associated with broiler chickens, in commercial grow-out houses. PROCEDURE Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify flaB, and the amplicon was digested with Sau3A to create a restriction fragment length polymorphism assay; PCR was also used to detect a transcribed spacer region in the 23S rRNA gene. RESULTS Isolates possessing a 23S spacer region were more prevalent outside broiler houses than inside. Houses that had previously contained chickens or lacked biosecurity procedures were more likely to contain isolates possessing the 23S spacer. One house contained only isolates possessing the spacer, whereas an adjacent house contained only isolates lacking the spacer. The flaB type detected in broiler houses was different from the type detected in the environment; however, many isolates within the broiler houses contained untypable flaB genotypes. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Most isolates from within houses were genetically distinct from isolates from outside houses that were examined by bacteriologic culture, suggesting an undetected source of C jejuni. Detection of isolates containing the 23S spacer appeared to be an indicator of environmental contamination of the houses. The observation of completely different C jejuni genetic types simultaneously within adjacent houses suggests that some types do not compete successfully during the grow-out period. In addition, the diversity of genotypes identified within broiler houses indicates the complexity of the ecologic features of C jejuni in the chicken environment.

Abstract
Two experiments are presented that serve as a framework for exploring auditory information processing. The framework is referred to as polychotic listening or auditory search, and it requires a listener to scan multiple simultaneous auditory streams for the appearance of a target word (the name of a letter such as A or M). Participants' ability to scan between two and six simultaneous auditory streams of letter and digit names for the name of a target letter was examined using six loudspeakers. The main independent variable was auditory load, or the number of active audio streams on a given trial. The primary dependent variables were target localization accuracy and reaction time. Results showed that as load increased, performance decreased. The performance decrease was evident in reaction time, accuracy, and sensitivity measures. The second study required participants to practice the same task for 10 sessions, for a total of 1800 trials. Results indicated that even with extensive practice, performance was still affected by auditory load. The present results are compared with findings in the visual search literature. The implications for the use of multiple auditory displays are discussed. Potential applications include cockpit and automobile warning displays, virtual reality systems, and training systems.

Abstract
Florfenicol, a veterinary fluorinated analog of thiamphenicol, is approved for treatment of bovine respiratory pathogens in the United States. However, florfenicol resistance has recently emerged among veterinary Escherichia coli isolates incriminated in bovine diarrhea. The flo gene, which confers resistance to florfenicol and chloramphenicol, has previously been identified in Photobacterium piscicida and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium DT104. The flo gene product is closely related to the CmlA protein identified in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The cmlA gene confers nonenzymatic chloramphenicol resistance via an efflux mechanism. Forty-eight E. coli isolates recovered from calves with diarrhea, including 41 that were both chloramphenicol and florfenicol resistant, were assayed for the presence of both flo and cmlA genes. Forty-two of the 44 isolates for which florfenicol MICs were > or =16 microg/ml were positive via PCR for the flo gene. All E. coli isolates for which florfenicol MICs were < or =8 microg/ml were negative for the flo gene (n = 4) Twelve E. coli isolates were positive for cmlA, and chloramphenicol MICs for all 12 were > or =32 microg/ml. Additionally, eight isolates were positive for both flo and cmlA, and both florfenicol and chloramphenicol MICs for these isolates were > or =64 microg/ml. DNA sequence analysis of the E. coli flo gene demonstrated 98% identity to the published GenBank sequences of both serovar Typhimurium flo(St) and P. piscicida pp-flo. The flo gene was identified on high-molecular-weight plasmids of approximately 225 kb among the majority of florfenicol-resistant E. coli isolates. However, not all of the florfenicol-resistant E. coli isolates tested contained the large flo-positive plasmids. This suggests that several of the E. coli isolates may possess a chromosomal flo gene. The E. coli flo gene specifies nonenzymatic cross-resistance to both florfenicol and chloramphenicol, and its presence among bovine E. coli isolates of diverse genetic backgrounds indicates a distribution much wider than previously thought.

Abstract
Pasteurella multocida is a mucosal pathogen that colonizes the respiratory system of susceptible hosts. Most isolates of P. multocida produce sialidase activity, which may contribute to colonization of the respiratory tract or the production of lesions in an active infection. We have cloned and sequenced a sialidase gene, nanH, from a fowl cholera isolate of P. multocida. Sequence analysis of NanH revealed that it exhibited significant amino acid sequence homology with many microbial sialidases. Insertional inactivation of nanH resulted in a mutant strain that was not deficient in sialidase production. However, this mutant exhibited reduced enzyme activity and growth rate on 2-3' sialyl lactose compared to the wild type. Subsequently, we demonstrated the presence of two sialidases by cloning another sialidase gene that differed from nanH in DNA sequence and substrate specificity. NanB demonstrated activity on both 2-3' and 2-6' sialyl lactose, while NanH demonstrated activity only on 2-3' sialyl lactose. Neither enzyme liberated sialic acid from colominic acid (2-8' sialyl lactose). Recombinant E. coli containing the sialidase genes were able to utilize several sialoconjugants when they were provided as sole carbon sources in minimal medium. These data suggest that sialidases have a nutritional function and may contribute to the ability of P. multocida to colonize and persist on vertebrate mucosal surfaces.

Abstract
PURPOSE To present emerging perspectives on open-angle glaucoma related to patient compliance, current drug therapy, and treatment options. METHODS Roundtable discussion. RESULTS The panel discussion identified the following issues about patient compliance:1. It is a common problem in clinical practice and is often underappreciated by physicians.2. It is difficult for clinicians to detect.3. There are several risk factors that increase the probability of noncompliance. 4. Compliance can be improved through education, communication, improvement of the doctor-patient relationship, compliance aids, and simplifying the treatment regimen. CONCLUSION Patients' compliance with the therapeutic regimen for open-angle glaucoma is very important to the eventual outcome of their disease treatment. Physicians can improve their patients' compliance by a few simple, cost-effective interventions in the clinical setting. When considering different agents as first-line therapies, once-a-day dosing would be optimal for enhancing compliance.

Abstract
RATIONALE Activation of 5-HT2C receptors is thought to enhance satiety and to mediate the action of the prototypical anorectic drug d-fenfluramine. OBJECTIVE Four experiments investigated the role of the 5-HT2C receptor in the modulation of feeding by comparison of the effects of the putative selective 5-HT2C receptor agonist Ro 60-0175 and d-fenfluramine on feeding behaviour. METHODS Microstructural analyses of meal patterning and drinking of a palatable solution were made over a range of drug doses administered to male Lister hooded rats. RESULTS Ro 60-0175 increased the latency to the first meal (3 mg/kg) and reduced meal size (1 mg/kg). d-Fenfluramine (1 mg/kg) produced a similar behavioural pattern, but 3 mg/kg produced a more profound hypophagia that persisted for 10-12 h. Ro 60-0175 (1, 3 mg/kg) and d-fenfluramine (1.5 mg/kg) reduced ingestion of a palatable glucose/saccharin solution, by a reduction in the number of bouts of licking, with little effect on the size of individual bouts. d-Fenfluramine-induced hypophagia (2.1 mg/kg) was challenged by the administration of the selective 5-HT2C receptor antagonist SB 242084 (1, 3 mg/kg) in the meal patterning paradigm. SB 242084 significantly attenuated the decrease in feeding rate and increase in latency to feed produced by d-fenfluramine, but had no effect on the fenfluramine-induced reduction in meal size. A similar pattern of results was obtained when Ro 60-0175-induced hypophagia (3 mg/kg) was challenged by SB 242084 (1, 3 mg/kg). CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate that Ro 60-0175 is a useful probe of the importance of 5-HT2C activation in the control of food intake and support the hypothesis that activation of 5-HT2C receptors is a critical aspect of the hypophagic action of d-fenfluramine. The 5-HT2C receptor may prove to be a useful target in the development of clinically effective drugs for the treatment of obesity.

Abstract
Previous research has shown that moderate caffeine users develop a liking for the flavour of a novel caffeinated drink only if they experience this drink in a caffeine-deprived state. This study tested how sensitive these conditioned-flavour preferences are to subsequent changes in deprivation state and the continued presence or absence of caffeine. Thirty-six moderate caffeine consumers were given 4 training days during which they evaluated a novel flavoured caffeinated drink consumed mid-morning after 12 h caffeine deprivation. Subjects were then divided into four groups depending on whether or not they remained caffeine-deprived and whether the test drink continued to contain caffeine. They then re-evaluated the novel drink over a further 4 test days. As expected, liking for the test drink increased across the 4 training days, and this increased liking was maintained across the 4 test days in the group who continued to receive the caffeinated version of the drink in a caffeine-deprived state. Liking decreased in the test phase in the caffeine-deprived group who no longer received caffeine (extinction). It is surprising that both groups who were tested in a non-deprived state showed a marked decrease in liking on all 4 test days relative to the last training day. This implies that conditioned-flavour preferences may not be expressed in the absence of the relevant motivational state (caffeine deprivation). Together, these data suggest that flavour preferences conditioned by caffeine are very sensitive to changes in the contingent relationship between deprivation state and caffeine content of the drink.

Abstract
Sequestration of drugs in intracellular vesicles has been associated with multidrug-resistance (MDR), but it is not clear why vesicular drug accumulation, which depends upon intracellular pH gradients, should be associated with MDR. Using a human uterine sarcoma cell line (MES-SA) and a doxorubicin (DOX)-resistant variant cell line (Dx-5), which expresses p-glycoprotein (PGP), we have addressed the relationship between multidrug resistance, vesicular acidification, and vesicular drug accumulation. Consistent with a pH-dependent mechanism of vesicular drug accumulation, studies of living cells vitally labeled with multiple probes indicate that DOX and daunorubicin (DNR) predominately accumulate in lysosomes, whose lumenal pH was measured at < 4.5, but are not detected in endosomes, whose pH was measured at 5.9. However, vesicular DOX accumulation is more pronounced in the drug-sensitive MES-SA cells and minimal in Dx5 cells even when cellular levels of DOX are increased by verapamil treatment. While lysosomal accumulation of DOX correlated well with pharmacologically induced differences in lysosome pH in MES-SA cells, lysosomal accumulation was minimal in Dx5 cells regardless of lysosomal pH. We found no differences in the pH of either endosomes or lysosomes between MES-SA and Dx5 cells, suggesting that, in contrast to other MDR cell systems, the drug-resistant Dx5 cells are refractory to pH-dependent vesicular drug accumulation. These studies demonstrate that altered endomembrane pH regulation is not a necessary consequence of cell transformation, and that vesicular sequestration of drugs is not a necessary characteristic of MDR.

Abstract
Lactobacilli are members of the normal mucosal microflora of most animals. Many isolates of Lactobacillus spp. are adherent to epithelial cells. In this study, using Lactobacillus acidophilus and L. agilis, we detected adherence in a pattern that suggested that the bacteria were binding to extracellular matrix proteins. Fluorescent microscopy, by using anti-fibronectin antibody, demonstrated that the isolates localize in those areas where fibronectin was detected. In addition, fibronectin pretreatment of the bacterial cells decreased adherence to Intestinal 407 epithelial cell monolayers. Cellular binding to fibronectin was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and affinity binding to radio-labeled fibronectin. Fibronectin may be one of the eukaryotic receptors mediating attachment of Lactobacillus to mucosal surfaces.

Abstract
RATIONALE The acquisition of a caffeine conditioned flavour preference depends on the caffeine deprivation status of subjects during conditioning. It is not known if the expression of an established flavour preference is also state-dependent. OBJECTIVES To determine if the expression of a flavour preference conditioned by caffeine is dependent on the level of deprivation at the time of testing. METHODS In a double-blind placebo controlled study, 44 subjects were given 4 days exposure to a novel flavoured drink following overnight abstinence from caffeine. Half the subjects received caffeine (100 mg) in the drink, while the remainder had placebo (maltodextrin, 100 mg). Subjects rated the pleasantness of the drink each time. On a fifth (test) day, the subjects were given additional caffeine (100 mg) or placebo 2 h before consuming and rating the pleasantness of the drink. RESULTS Pleasantness ratings for the novel drink increased over the 4 conditioning days in subjects receiving caffeine, but decreased in those given placebo. On day 5, subjects who were trained and tested in the same caffeine deprivation state expressed pleasantness ratings similar to those for the final training day. In contrast, subjects who were trained and tested in different states expressed pleasantness ratings that were significantly different from those of the final training day. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the expression of caffeine conditioned flavour preferences are acutely sensitive to current motivational state, and a number of possible explanations are discussed.

Abstract
Salmonella infections have been implicated in large-scale die-offs of wild birds in the United States. Although we know quite a bit about the epidemiology of Salmonella infection among domestic fowl, we know little about the incidence, epidemiology, and genetic relatedness of salmonellae in nondomestic birds. To gain further insight into salmonellae in these hosts, 22 Salmonella isolates from diseased nondomestic birds were screened for the presence of virulence and antibiotic resistance-associated genes and compared genetically using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis. Of the 22 Salmonella isolates examined, 15 were positive for the invasion gene invA and the virulence plasmid-associated genes spvC and pef. Most (15 of 22) were generally sensitive to antibiotics. However, two Salmonella isolates from pet birds were identified as Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium DT104. Despite the general susceptibility of these Salmonella isolates to most antimicrobial agents, antibiotic resistance-associated genes intI1, merA, and aadA1 were identified in a number of these isolates. Five distinct XbaI and nine distinct BlnI DNA patterns were observed for the 22 Salmonella isolates typed by PFGE. PFGE analysis determined that Salmonella isolates from passerines in Georgia and Wyoming were genetically related.

Abstract
Recently, it was reported that 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors increased bone mineral density (BMD) in mice. We studied the effect of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors on BMD of type 2 diabetes mellitus by a retrospective review of medical records. Sixty-nine type 2 diabetic patients were included. The control group (n = 33) did not take HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. The treatment group (n = 36) was administered either lovastatin, pravastatin, or simvastatin. BMD of the spine, femoral neck, femoral trochanter, and total hip were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. There were no significant differences between control and treatment groups in age, sex, body mass index, glycemic control, and serum insulin levels. In the control group, BMD of the spine significantly decreased (from 1.116 +/- 0.165 to 1.081 +/- 0.178 g/cm2) after 14 months. In the treatment group, BMD of the femoral neck significantly increased (from 0.853 +/- 0.139 to 0.878 +/- 0.147 g/cm2) after 15 months. In male subjects treated with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, there was a significant increase in BMD of the femoral neck and femoral trochanter (from 0.899 +/- 0.139 to 0.934 +/- 0.139 and from 0.801 +/- 0.145 to 0.833 +/- 0.167 g/cm2, respectively), but in female subjects, only BMD of the femoral neck increased (from 0.819 +/- 0.132 to 0.834 +/- 0.143 g/cm2). Percentage increments of BMD of the femoral neck, femoral wards triangle, femoral trochanter, and total hip in the treatment group were significantly higher than in the control group (2.32% vs. -0.99, 1.77% vs. -1.25%, 1.40% vs. -1.21%, 0.88% vs. -1.03%, respectively). The proportion of subjects who had an increase in BMD of the spine and total hip more than two percentages was significantly larger in the treatment group than in the control group (30.6% vs. 15.2% and 30.6% vs. 9.1%, respectively). The increased increment in BMD of the treatment group was significantly greater than those in the control group after adjustment for age and body mass index (P < 0.05). These results suggest that HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors may increase BMD of the femur in male patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Florfenicol is an antibiotic approved for veterinary use in cattle in the United States in 1996. Although this drug is not used in poultry, we have detected resistance to florfenicol in clinical isolates of avian Escherichia coli. Molecular typing demonstrated that the florfenicol resistance gene, flo, was independently acquired and is plasmid encoded.

Abstract
MacGregor and Ormerod (1996) have presented results purporting to show that human performance on visually presented traveling salesman problems, as indexed by a measure of response uncertainty, is strongly determined by the number of points in the stimulus array falling inside the convex hull, as distinct from the total number of points. It is argued that this conclusion is artifactually determined by their constrained procedure for stimulus construction, and, even if true, would be limited to arrays with fewer than around 50 points.
