Abstract
Although higher nuclear factor κB (NFκB) expression and activity is observed in preeclamptic placentas, its mechanism of activation is unknown. This is the first study to investigate whether the canonical, non-canonical, or atypical NFκB activation pathways may be responsible for the higher activation of NFκB observed in preeclamptic placentas. The study included 268 cases (130 preeclamptic women and 138 controls). We studied the expression of the genes coding for NFκB activators (NIK, IKKα, IKKβ, and CK2α) and inhibitors (IκBα and IκBβ) using RT-PCR in real time. The RT-PCR results were verified on the protein level using ELISA and Western blot. To determine the efficiency of the pathways, the ratios of activator(s) to one of the inhibitors (IκBα or IκBβ) were calculated for each studied pathway. The preeclamptic placentas demonstrated significantly lower IKKα and CK2α but higher IκBα and IκBβ protein levels. In addition, the calculated activator(s) to inhibitor (IκBα or IκBβ) ratios suggested that all studied pathways might be downregulated in preeclamptic placentas. Our results indicate that preeclamptic placentas may demonstrate mechanisms of NFκB activation other than the canonical, non-canonical, and atypical forms. In these mechanisms, inhibitors of NFκB may play a key role. These observations broaden the existing knowledge regarding the molecular background of preeclampsia development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical cases have been reported with women who got pregnant with confirmed low serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentrations, thus demonstrating that low serum AMH concentration cut-points could be fairly specific for poor ovarian response (POR) to gonadotrophin stimulation, but not for pregnancy. That observation prompted the question whether serum AMH concentration accurately corresponded to the whole amount of AMH secreted by granulosa cells. OBJECTIVES To measure AMH levels in peritoneal fluid and their correlations with serum AMH concentrations. MATERIAL AND METHODS The reported study involved 48 female patients, aged 18-40 years, diagnosed with benign ovarian cysts and qualified for a laparoscopic cystectomy. Prior to surgery, the ovarian reserve was assessed using serum AMH concentration assay. The peritoneal fluid was also collected during the laparoscopy and AMH concentrations in peritoneal fluid were measured. RESULTS The AMH present in the peritoneal fluid strongly correlated with AMH levels in blood serum (r = 0.54; p < 0.001) and higher serum AMH concentrations corresponded to higher AMH concentrations in the peritoneal fluid. There was also a significant correlation between AMH levels in serum and in peritoneal fluid, collected from patients with endometrioma and other benign cysts (r = 0.61; p = 0.001 vs r = 0.43; p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS The AMH is present in the peritoneal fluid and its concentrations significantly correlate with AMH levels in serum. The assessment of AMH concentration in the peritoneal fluid may be a valuable complement to the evaluation of ovarian reserve and the diagnosis of infertility after adnexal surgery.

Abstract
Ovarian follicular growth and development involves extensive bidirectional cell-to-cell communication between somatic cells and the oocyte. Recently it has been found that extracellular vesicles (EVs) represent a new mechanism of the communication inside the ovarian follicle. The present research shows for the first time the presence of EVs in follicular fluid of small (SFs), medium (MFs) and large (LFs) antral follicles of sexually mature gilts using nanoparticle tracking analysis and Western blot. The highest (P = 0.0338) concentration of EVs was found in follicular fluid of MFs, as compared to LFs and SFs. Furthermore, nanoparticle tracking analysis showed the existence of the population of particles in follicular fluid of all analyzed follicles, which resembles exosomes. That was confirmed by the abundance of exosomal markers, CD9 and CD63, in those samples. The proteomic analysis of EVs from MFs using the nano-liquid chromatography-matrix-assisted laser deposition/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry allows to identify 249 proteins that predominantly indicated binding function and catalytic activity. Most of them belong also to the group of cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix proteins (ECM) suggesting their role in the building of cell components. Functional annotation predicted association of identified proteins with processes crucial for follicle development and function, as well as ovulation and corpus luteum formation. Therefore, EVs through their protein cargo might regulate follicle development in sexually mature gilts.

Abstract
Vitamin D3 is well-known as a major regulator of calcium and phosphorus homeostasis. A growing body of evidence highlights its crucial role in the regulation of reproductive processes in females. The role of vitamin D3 in the female reproductive tract has been extensively investigated because its receptor is abundant in reproductive organs, including ovary. Importantly, besides expression of vitamin D3 receptor, the ovary is an extrarenal site of vitamin D3 metabolism. The influence of vitamin D3 on follicular development and ovarian steroidogenesis has been investigated. Furthermore, vitamin D3 deficiency has also been associated with polycystic ovary syndrome, premature ovarian failure and ovarian cancer. The objective of this review is to summarize our knowledge about the contribution of vitamin D3 to physiological and pathological processes within the ovary.

Abstract
To assess the effects of 4-nitrophenol (PNP) and 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol (PNMC) on steroidogenesis in the chicken ovary, white (WF, 1-4 mm) and yellowish (YF, 4-8 mm) prehierarchical follicles were incubated in a medium supplemented with PNP or PNMC (10-8-10-4 M), ovine LH (oLH; 10 ng/mL), and combinations of oLH with PNP or PNMC (10-6 M). Testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) concentrations in media and mRNA expression for steroidogenic proteins (STAR, HSD3B1, and CYP19A1), and LH receptors (LHR), estrogen receptor α (ESR1) and β (ESR2) in follicles were determined by RIA and real-time qPCR, respectively. PNP and PNMC decreased T and E2 secretion by the WF and YF, and oLH-stimulated T secretion from these follicles. PNP decreased basal STAR and HSD3B1 mRNA levels both in the WF and YF, and CYP19A1 mRNAs in the WF. PNP reduced oLH-affected mRNA expression of these genes in the YF. PNMC inhibited basal STAR, HSD3B1, and CYP19A1 mRNA expression in the WF, but not in the YF. PNMC reduced oLH-stimulated STAR and CYP19A1 expression in the YF and WF, respectively. PNP decreased basal mRNA expression of LHR, ESR1, and ESR2 in the WF, but it increased ESR1 and ESR2 mRNA levels in the YF. PNMC reduced both basal and oLH-affected LHR, ESR1, and ESR2 mRNA expression in the WF; however, it did not influence expression of these genes in the YF. We suggest that nitrophenols by influencing sex steroid synthesis and transcription of LH and estrogen receptors in prehierarchical ovarian follicles may impair their development and selection to the preovulatory hierarchy.

Abstract
To study the long-term impact of neonatal exposure to endocrine-active compounds (EACs) on plasma lipid profiles, steroid concentrations, and morphology of porcine luteal tissue, piglets were injected with testosterone propionate (TP), flutamide (FLU), 4-tert-octylphenol, ICI 182,780 (ICI), methoxychlor, or corn oil (controls) between postnatal days 1 and 10 (n = 5/group). Blood samples and corpora lutea were obtained from sexually mature gilts. The investigated compounds differentially affected plasma lipid and steroid concentrations. Moreover, we demonstrated hypertrophy of luteal cells after neonatal EAC administration. In addition, a predominant abundance of lipid droplets was found in luteal cells of TP-, FLU-, and ICI-treated animals. It seems that the pathways leading to changes in the plasma lipid profile may contribute to the development of long-term alterations that have the potential to affect luteal steroidogenic capability in pigs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Folate is required for fetal, placental and maternal tissue growth during pregnancy. A decline in maternal circulating folate concentrations and an increase in total homocysteine (a non-specific indicator of folate deficiency) have been observed with the progression of pregnancy. However, the role of folate in the third trimester of pregnancy is not clear and folate status in late pregnancy has not so far been widely analyzed. The main aim of this retrospective cross-sectional study was to determine the folate concentrations in amniotic fluid and in maternal and umbilical cord blood serum derived during delivery. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study was conducted on 175 pregnant Polish women (white/Caucasian) aged between 17 and 42 years. Only pregnancies without birth defects were included in this study. Amniotic fluid, maternal serum, and umbilical cord blood samples were collected during vaginal delivery or cesarean section. Folate concentration was determined using a microbiological assay. RESULTS Strong correlations were observed between the concentrations of folate in amniotic fluid and maternal serum (rho = 0.67, p < 0.001) and amniotic fluid and cord blood serum (rho = 0.49, p < 0.001) and between maternal serum and cord blood serum (rho = 0.67, p < 0.001). Folate concentrations in amniotic fluid were significantly associated with maternal age (rho = 0.19, p < 0.05). Pre-pregnancy body mass index and maternal weight/neonatal birth weight ratio were independent predictors of folate concentrations in maternal serum (β = 0.33, p < 0.05; β = -0.19, p < 0.05) and amniotic fluid (β = 0.28, p < 0.05; β = -0.19, p < 0.05) in late pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS Folate concentrations in amniotic fluid are associated with maternal and neonatal folate status peripartum in healthy women.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the concentration and the reference ranges of essential and toxic elements in amniotic fluid (AF) and maternal serum (MS) at birth. This study was conducted among 175 healthy pregnant Caucasian European women aged 18-42. AF and maternal blood samples were collected during delivery. An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique was used to determine the levels of Mg, Co, Cu, Zn, Sr, Cd, Ba, Pb, U, Ca, Cr, Al, Mn, V, Fe, As, Se and Sb in AF and MS. The range of reference values was calculated for all analyzed elements in the serum and AF. The mean concentrations of elements, except Pb, were generally higher in MS than in AF. Multiple regression analysis showed that the maternal/newborn body mass (MBM/NBM) ratio was a strong negative predictor (among maternal age and gravidity) of Mg concentration in amniotic fluid. In the serum, MBN/NBM ratio was a strong positive predictor of Cu concentration. Moreover, regression analysis showed that maternal age was an independent positive predictor of the Se level in maternal serum. The reference value ranges of 18 essential and toxic elements were established in AF and MS among a population of healthy pregnant Polish women at delivery. The level of Mg, Co, Cu, Ca and Se in AF and MS can be determined by maternal age and MBM/NBM ratio. These results can be useful in counseling individuals with pregnancies affected by exposure to one of the parameters under investigation.

Abstract
A linkage of dichorionic (DC) twin pregnancies with selective intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) to alterations in placental gene expression is unclear. The aim of the study was to identify placental genes related to hypoxia, adipogenesis and human growth which may contribute to IUGR development. The study group (IUGR/AGA) comprised dichorionic (DC) twin pregnancies, where the weight of the twins differed by > 15%; in addition, one twin was small for gestational age (< 10th percentile-SGA) (IUGR) while the other was appropriate for gestational age (> 10th percentile-AGA). In the control group (AGA/AGA), both fetuses were AGA and their weights differed by < 15%. In the first step (selection), placental expression of 260 genes was analysed by commercial PCR profiler array or qPCR primer assay between six pairs of IUGR/AGA twins. In the second stage (verification), the expression of 20 genes with fold change (FC) > 1.5 selected from the first stage was investigated for 75 DC pregnancies: 23 IUGR/AGA vs. 52 AGA/AGA. The expression of Angiopoetin 2, Leptin and Kruppel-like factor 4 was significantly higher, and Glis Family Zinc Finger 3 was lower, in placentas of SGA fetuses (FC = 3.3; 4.4; 1.6; and - 1.8, respectively; p < 0.05). The dysregulation of gene expression related to angiogenesis and growth factors in placentas of twins born from IUGR/AGA pregnancies suggest that these alternations might represent biological fetal adaptation to the uteral condition. Moreover, DC twin pregnancies may be a good model to identify the differences in placental gene expression between SGA and AGA fetuses.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine the correlations between body mass index (BMI) values before pregnancy and the concentrations of selected elements (Mg, Co, Cu, Zn, Sr, Cd, Ba, Pb, U, Ca, Cr, Al, Mn, V, Fe) in blood serum and amniotic fluid (AF) in pregnant women. Elemental analysis of serum and amniotic fluid in 225 Polish women (Caucasian/white) showed a relationship between the concentration of minerals in the above-mentioned samples and the pre-pregnancy BMI. Analysis of blood serum was performed by using ICP-MS and it demonstrated that iron concentration was significantly lower in overweight and obese women. Being underweight in pregnant women was associated with a significantly lower concentration of magnesium and cobalt in the blood serum. Both underweight and overweight women were associated with significantly lower concentrations of calcium and strontium in the blood serum. The concentration of cobalt was significantly higher in underweight women. The concentration of lead in the blood serum of overweight and obese women was significantly higher than in other groups. Analysis of the AF showed that the concentration of copper was significantly lower in overweight and obese women, and the concentration of manganese and vanadium significantly higher than in other groups of women. A deficiency in essential minerals and an excess of heavy metals in women may be associated with abnormal body weight and this is important in the etiopathogenesis of pregnancy and fetal development disorders.

Abstract
Congenital birth defects may result in a critical condition affecting the baby, including severe fetal/neonatal handicap and mortality. Several studies have shown that genetic, nutritional, and environmental factors may have an impact on fetal development and neonatal health. The relevance of essential and toxic elements on fetal development has not yet been fully investigated, and the results of recent research indicate that these elements may be crucial in the assessment of the risk of malformations in neonates. We determined the association between essential and toxic elements and the level of folate in maternal serum (MS) and amniotic fluid (AF), along with neonatal abnormalities. A total of 258 pregnant Polish women in the age group of 17⁻42 years participated in this study. AF and MS were collected during vaginal delivery or during cesarean section. An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique was used to determine the levels of various elements in AF and MS. The results of this exploratory study indicate that the levels of essential and toxic elements are associated with fetal and newborn anatomical abnormalities and growth disorders.

Abstract
The impact of exposure to lead on child neurodevelopment has been well established. However, sex differences in vulnerability are still not fully explained. We aimed at evaluating the effect of a low-level lead exposure, as measured between 20 to 24 weeks of pregnancy and in cord blood, on developmental scores up to 24 months of age in 402 children from the Polish Mother and Child Cohort (REPRO_PL). Additionally, sex-dependent susceptibility to lead at this very early stage of psychomotor development was assessed. The blood lead levels were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In order to estimate the children’s neurodevelopment, the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development was applied. The geometric mean (GM) for blood lead level during 20–24 weeks of pregnancy was 0.99 ± 0.15 µg/dL and, in the cord blood, it was 0.96 ± 0.16 µg/dL. There was no statistically significant impact of lead exposure during prenatal period on the girls’ psychomotor abilities. Among the boys, we observed lower scores for cognitive functions, along with increasing cord blood lead levels (β = −2.07; p = 0.04), whereas the results for the language and motor abilities were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Our findings show that fetal exposure to very low lead levels might affect early cognitive domain, with boys being more susceptible than girls. Education on health, higher public awareness, as well as intervention programs, along with relevant regulations, are still needed to reduce risks for the vulnerable population subgroups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The "Y sign" at the level of the 3-vessel and trachea view corresponds to thinning of main pulmonary artery and arterial duct and a dilated transverse aortic arch. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Y sign for the diagnosis of aortic dextroposition anomalies at the time of the first-trimester scan and to assess the screening performance of only the Y sign, only abnormal left axis deviation (axis sign), and their combination for the diagnosis of aortic dextroposition anomalies. METHODS A prospective evaluation of 6025 pregnant women undergoing first-trimester ultrasonography was conducted. The cardiac axis was measured in all examined patients and considered abnormal (positive axis sign) at greater than 57 °. The frequency of the Y sign and the axis sign was assessed for this population, and their screening performance for the diagnosis of aortic dextroposition anomalies was calculated. RESULTS A total of 5775 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Aortic dextroposition anomalies were diagnosed in 17 cases (tetralogy of Fallot in 8 and Fallot-like double-outlet right ventricle in 9). The Y sign was found in 18 of 5775 (0.3%) fetuses examined, of which 7 of 18 were confirmed with tetralogy of Fallot, 9 of 18 with a Fallot-like double-outlet right ventricle, and 2 of 18 with pulmonary stenosis. A positive axis sign of greater than 57 ° was found in 20 fetuses, including 4 with normal heart anatomy. The sensitivity values of the Y sign, the axis sign, and their combination were 94%, 76%, and 94%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Visualization of the Y sign should increase the suspicion of aortic dextroposition anomalies in the late first trimester. The screening performance of the Y sign alone and in combination with an abnormal cardiac axis was high and may aid in the early diagnosis of aortic dextroposition anomalies in the fetus.

Abstract
Autophagy is a cellular process that involves the degradation of intracellular components. Recent studies suggested a role for autophagy in corpus luteum (CL) regression; however, a complete understanding of its contribution to CL function remains unclear. The present research using porcine CLs obtained from gilts at the early (CL1, n = 5), middle (CL2, n = 5), and late (CL3, n = 5) luteal phase of the estrous cycle aimed to assess the incidence of autophagy during CL development. The stages of collected CLs were verified through morphological analysis and intraluteal progesterone concentration. The presence of autophagosomes was assessed using transmission electron microscopy, and the expression of autophagic markers was examined at mRNA (BECN1 and Lamp1) and protein (Beclin 1, LC3-II, and Lamp 1) levels. Lamp 1 immunolocalization was also performed in luteal tissue. Double-membrane autophagosomes and autophagy-related proteins were found in all examined CLs. Interestingly, there was a greater expression of Beclin 1 (P = 0.005 and P = 0.025) and Lamp 1 (P = 0.009 and P = 0.032) protein in CL3 as compared with CL1 and CL2. In addition, the presence of autolysosomes in CL3 indicated advanced autophagy at that developmental stage. Overall, the occurrence of autophagy throughout CL development and regression suggests it has a role in the regulation of CL lifespan in pigs. In the early and mature CL, autophagy is proposed to promote luteal formation and function, whereas in the late CL, it may participate in luteal regression.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies have suggested an association between maternal antioxidant levels during pregnancy and development of allergic diseases in their offspring. The aim of the study was to determine plasma vitamins A and E concentration in the 1st trimester of pregnancy, at delivery and in cord blood and to search for a relationship with allergy in up to 2-year-old children who were prenatally exposed or not exposed to tobacco smoke. The study participants included 252 mother-child pairs from Polish Mother and Child Cohort. Vitamin concentrations were measured using the HPLC-UV method, smoking status—as saliva cotinine level using the HPLC-MS/MS technique. Children’s health status was assessed using a questionnaire and pediatricians/allergists examination. Cord plasma vitamin concentrations were significantly lower than their levels in maternal plasma in the 1sttrimester and at delivery (p < 0.001). Significantly higher concentrations of vitamin E have been shown to occur during the 1st trimester of pregnancy in plasma of the women who have actively/passively smoked cigarettes compared to the non-smokers (p < 0.02). Multivariate analysis with inclusion of a variety of confounding factors have not indicated any statistically significant associations between β-carotene, vitamins A and E and the risk of food allergy, atopic dermatitis and wheezing in their children up to 2 years of age. The interaction between smoking during pregnancy and vitamins levels on the risk of allergy was not statistically significant (p < 0.4). The relationship between plasma concentration of vitamins A and E, and the risk of allergy in their young children has not been demonstrated.

Abstract
The mineral levels in maternal serum change during pregnancy and may be correlated with those of newborn cord blood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and copper (Cu) in maternal blood before and after delivery and in umbilical cord vein and artery serum. The study was carried out in 64 Caucasian pregnant women who delivered in a district hospital in Greater Poland region, aged 28.1 ± 5.4 years, with a mean gestational age of 39.2 ± 1.3 weeks. Blood samples were taken from women 2-8 h before delivery and immediately after childbirth. The umbilical cord artery and vein blood of newborns was obtained immediately after childbirth. The levels of minerals in serum were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. A significant drop in the concentrations of Mg (17.71 ± 1.51 vs 17.07 ± 1.61 μg/ml; p < 0.007), Fe (1.08 ± 0.46 vs 0.82 ± 0.35 μg/ml; p < 0.0004), and Zn (0.63 ± 0.17 vs 0.46 ± 0.16; p < 0.0001) in maternal serum was found after delivery. Moreover, higher levels of Ca, Fe, and Zn and lower levels of Cu were observed in the umbilical vein (Ca: 102.80 ± 7.80 μg/ml; p < 0.0001, Fe: 1.96 ± 0.43 μg/ml; p < 0.0001, Zn: 0.65 ± 0.16 μg/ml; p < 0.0001, Cu: 0.36 ± 0.09 μg/ml; p < 0.0001) and in the umbilical artery cord blood (Ca: 98.07 ± 8.18 μg/ml; p < 0.0001, Fe: 1.63 ± 0.30 μg/ml; p < 0.0001, Zn: 0.65 ± 0.15 μg/ml; p < 0.0001, and Cu: 0.36 ± 0.10 μg/ml; p < 0.0001) compared to the maternal serum (Ca: 85.05 ± 10.76 μg/ml, Fe: 0.82 ± 0.35 μg/ml, Zn: 0.46 ± 0.16 μg/ml, and Cu: 1.90 ± 0.35 μg/ml). Fe levels in the cord artery serum negatively correlated with blood loss during delivery (R = -0.48; p = 0.01), while the Ca concentration in the maternal serum after birth decreased with the age of the women (R = -0.25; p = 0.03). In conclusion, it seems that the process of birth alters the mineral levels in pregnant women's blood. Moreover, it was found that blood loss and the age of the mother are associated with mineral concentrations in the maternal serum and cord artery blood.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the dietary intake of pregnant women and their nutritional status of Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, and Cu, as the nutritional status of pregnant women is an important factor for the proper progression of a pregnancy and the development and health of the foetus. Methods The study was conducted on 108 pregnant women ages 18–42, at 6–32 weeks of gestation. We used a questionnaire and a 24-h recall nutrition interview. Hair samples were taken for testing and the level of each mineral was assessed using atomic absorption spectrometry. The results were analysed using the Dietetyk and Statistica 10 software. Results Low levels of Fe, Zn, Ca, Mg, vitamin D, and folic acid intake were seen in the pregnant women, with the use of dietary supplements significantly increasing their intake of Fe, Zn, and folic acid. The concentration of zinc and magnesium in the women’s hair was shown to be affected by their age and, in the case of magnesium, by the week of pregnancy. Conclusions It was observed that the diet of pregnant women is characterised by low levels of Fe, Zn, Ca, Mg, vitamin D, and folic acid. Dietary supplementation with vitamins and minerals significantly increases the daily Fe and folic acid intake in pregnant women. The concentration of Zn and Mg in hair depends on the age of pregnant women and Mg level in the hair of women decreases during pregnancy.

Abstract
Recently it has been shown that vitamin D(3) acting via its cognate receptor (VDR) regulates the growth, differentiation and function of female reproductive tissues including ovary. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of testosterone (T) and its antagonist 2-hydroxyflutamide (HF) on VDR protein expression and function in porcine ovarian follicles. Medium size antral follicles expressing great amount of androgen receptors and represent high steroidogenic activity were used in this research. After 6 h incubation of whole follicles with T, HF or T+HF, immunohistochemical analysis of VDR revealed its nuclear localization in granulosa and theca interna cells in control and experimental groups. The expression of VDR protein was shown as a band of 48 kDa. There were no significant differences between either experimental group and the control. T influenced the function of VDR through decreased formation of VDR/RXR (retinoid X receptor) complexes (P<0.05) in both granulosa and theca interna cells, but HF abolished this effect only in granulosa cells (P<0.05). These results suggest that androgens regulate the response of follicular cells to vitamin D3 in pigs ovary via regulation of VDR transcriptional activity.

Abstract
This is a case report about very rare findings in 2nd half of pregnancy (after normal 1 trimester scan ) at 18th week of gestation fetal macrosomia was detected unrelated to maternal diabetes, and acceleration fetal growth later on with unusual cardiac abnormalities (fetal cardiomegaly, cardiomyopathy, partial abnormal venous connection ). Progressive features of congestive heart failure with polyhydramnios in a fetus with estimated 5500 g predicted a poor outcome and severe neonatal condition, which was presented and discussed with the parents to be. Casearean section was performed at 33rd weeks of gestation due to maternal dyscomfort, severe legs edema and her tachypnoe. Baby boy was delivered with birth weight of 5050g, Apgar 4 with mutiple tumors. Conservative care was introduced and neonated died on the 3rd day. Differential diagnosis was discussed with special attention to Costello syndrome however without proved by genetic make-up from neonatal blood.

Abstract
Introduction: Congenital heart defects are the most frequent reason for deaths during the neonatal and early infancy periods. The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyze singleton pregnancy outcomes of premature neonates with congenital cardiac defects delivered by Cesarean section. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 10,800 fetuses evaluated in our referral fetal cardiac center between 2010 and 2016. A group of 58 singleton pregnancies was selected with the following criteria: fetal heart defect, Cesarean section (C-section), and gestation of 37 weeks or less. Exclusion criteria included labor outside of our hospital and multiple pregnancy. Results: Isolated heart defects constituted 74,1% (43 cases) of the analysed data set. The majority of newborns were delivered at 36 weeks of gestation (43,1%), with an average of 33,6 weeks. In one case (1,7%), C-section took place at 22nd week. Birth weight of newborns < 2500g constituted 51,7% (30 cases). Neonatal deaths occurred in 60,3% (35 cases). Conclusions: Preterm neonates with congenital heart defect, delivered by C-section in our reference centre, during 2010 to 2016, had generally poor outcomes and high mortality rate. The average hospital stay of surviving neonates was approximately two months. An improvement of knowledge about prenatal cardiology is necessary in obstetrician management with fetuses with congenital heart diseases.

Abstract
Malaria is one of the most common lethal parasitic diseases. Infection is transmitted when an infected female mosquito bites a human introducing the sporozoites into human blood. The article presents the course of pregnancy and delivery in a patient complicated by Plasmodium infection. The patient had repetitive several trips to Tanzania over a short time period before she developed the condition. She had been taking antimalarial medication (proguanil-atovaquone) in a prophylactic dose during and after her first travel to Tanzania. Following her first return to Poland she experienced infection-related symptoms.
