Abstract
As the mining industry is facing an increasing number of issues related to its fresh water consumption, water-saving strategies are progressively being implemented in the mineral processing plants, often leading to variations in the process water chemistry. However, the impact of water chemistry variations on the process performance is rarely known beforehand, thus creating an obstacle to the implementation of those water-saving strategies. To tackle this problem, the effect the different dissolved species present in the process water have on the processing plant performance must be quantified, and this information must be digitalized in a practical and suitable form to be used in mineral processing simulators. To achieve this goal, a methodology to digitalize the influence of the process water composition on the flotation performance is presented in this paper. Using the flotation of a fluorite ore as case study, the relationship between process water composition and the flotation kinetics of that fluorite ore was determined. This relationship was digitalized in HSC Sim, a mineral processing simulator, turning it into a tool capable of simulating the flotation performance under a variety of process water compositions. Finally, the potential of this new tool to help implementing water-saving strategies on the mine site is discussed, and the challenges that need to be overcome in order to apply this tool at industrial scale are being addressed.

Abstract
The defect structure of γ-Al2O3 derived from boehmite was investigated using a combination of selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Both methods confirmed a strong dependence of the diffraction line broadening on the diffraction indices known from literature. The analysis of the SAED patterns revealed that the dominant structure defects in the spinel-type γ-Al2O3 are antiphase boundaries located on the lattice planes , which produce the sublattice shifts . Quantitative information about the defect structure of γ-Al2O3 was obtained from the powder XRD patterns. This includes mainly the size of γ-Al2O3 crystallites and the density of planar defects. The correlation between the density of the planar defects and the presence of structural vacancies, which maintain the stoichiometry of the spinel-type γ-Al2O3, is discussed. A computer routine running on a fast graphical processing unit was written for simulation of the XRD patterns. This routine calculates the atomic positions for a given kind and density of planar defect, and simulates the diffracted intensities with the aid of the Debye scattering equation.

Abstract
Our flotation cell is built of borosilicate glass, holds up to 90 g of sample, and achieves quartz and feldspar separation in ≤2 h. The procedure uses air bubbles to which the feldspars attach, 0.2% HF to reduce the surface energy of quartz, dodecylamine solution as a feldspar collector, and operates at a pH range of 2.4–2.7 at room temperature. We trace the stepwise enrichment of quartz by X-ray diffraction analysis, which shows that froth flotation is the decisive step to reach 95–100% purity from the initial 23–46%.
Cosmogenic nuclide (CN) dating relies on specific target minerals such as quartz as markers to identify geologic events, including the timing of landscape evolution. The presence of feldspar in sediment samples poses a challenge to the separation of quartz and affects the chemical procedures for extracting the radioactive CNs 10Be and 26Al. Additionally, feldspar contamination reduces the 26Al/27Al ratio, thus hinders the accurate determination of 26Al by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Using fluvial sediment samples from Central Asia, which contain 16–50 weight percent (wt.%) of feldspar, we show that the standard physical separation and chemical cleaning-up procedures for quartz-enrichment reduces the feldspar content to only 9–47 wt.%. We present a new froth flotation mineral-separation device and procedure that allows for very effective quartz enrichment before CN chemistry. Our flotation cell, which has a volume of 600 cm3, is built of borosilicate glass, holds up to 90 g of sample, and achieves quartz and feldspar separation in ≤2 h for very feldspar-rich samples. We trace the stepwise enrichment of quartz to 95–100% purity with our procedure by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
During the past years, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has matured to an indispensable tool to characterize nanomaterials in colloid and interface science. For imaging, a sharp probe mounted near to the end of a cantilever scans over the sample surface providing a high resolution three-dimensional topographic image. In addition, the AFM tip can be used as a force sensor to detect local properties like adhesion, stiffness, charge etc. After the invention of the colloidal probe technique it has also become a major method to measure surface forces. In this review, we highlight the advances in the application of AFM in the field of mineral flotation, such as mineral morphology imaging, water at mineral surface, reagent adsorption, inter-particle force, and bubble-particle interaction. In the coming years, the complementary characterization of chemical composition such as using infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy for AFM topography imaging and the synchronous measurement of the force and distance involving deformable bubble as a force sensor will further assist the fundamental understanding of flotation mechanism.

Abstract
The well-established indoline dye D149 and three indoline dyes with improved binding stability (DN91, DN216 and DN285) were used as sensitizers for electrodeposited porous ZnO and studied in dye-sensitized solar cells and showed very similar cell characteristics. After storage of the cells in the dark for four weeks, an increase in short-circuit current density was observed. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy served to detect a shift of the conduction band edge energy to lower energies and, hence, an increased injection efficiency of electrons from the excited state of the sensitizer to the ZnO conduction band is detected as the main cause of this change. Additional photoelectrochemical experiments at different illumination intensities, intensity modulated photocurrent and photovoltage spectroscopy (IMPS and IMVS), transient photocurrent measurements, as well as measurements of the open-circuit photovoltage decay (OCVD) were performed to confirm this conclusion and, further, to prove a reduced rate of recombination for these injected electrons which prevented a corresponding decrease in the open-circuit voltage for many cells, frequently observed earlier. It is therefore shown how the long-term stability of ZnO-based DSSCs can be improved.

Abstract
Conductive polymer electrodes have exceptional promise for next-generation bioelectronics and energy conversion devices due to inherent mechanical flexibility, printability, biocompatibility, and low cost. Conductive polymers uniquely exhibit hybrid electronic-ionic transport properties that enable novel electrochemical device architectures, an advantage over inorganic counterparts. Yet critical structure-property relationships to control the potential-dependent rates of charge transfer at polymer/electrolyte interfaces remain poorly understood. Herein, we evaluate the kinetics of charge transfer between electrodeposited poly-(3-hexylthiophene) films and a model redox-active molecule, ferrocenedimethanol. We show that the kinetics directly follow the potential-dependent occupancy of electronic states in the polymer. The rate increases then decreases with potential (both normal and inverted kinetic regimes), a phenomenon distinct from inorganic semiconductors. This insight can be invoked to design polymer electrodes with kinetic selectivity toward redox active species and help guide synthetic approaches for the design of alternative device architectures and approaches.

Abstract
Individual donors in silicon chips are used as quantum bits with extremely low error rates. However, physical realizations have been limited to one donor because their atomic size causes fabrication challenges. Quantum dot qubits, in contrast, are highly adjustable using electrical gate voltages. This adjustability could be leveraged to deterministically couple donors to quantum dots in arrays of qubits. In this work, we demonstrate the coherent interaction of a 31P donor electron with the electron of a metal-oxide-semiconductor quantum dot. We form a logical qubit encoded in the spin singlet and triplet states of the two-electron system. We show that the donor nuclear spin drives coherent rotations between the electronic qubit states through the contact hyperfine interaction. This provides every key element for compact two-electron spin qubits requiring only a single dot and no additional magnetic field gradients, as well as a means to interact with the nuclear spin qubit. In silicon, quantum information can be stored in donors or quantum dots, each with its advantages and limitations—particularly in terms of fabrication. Here the authors coherently couple a phosphorous donor’s electron spin to a quantum dot, encoding information in the hybrid two-electron system’s state.

Abstract
Ultra-low-field (ULF) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a promising spectroscopy method allowing for, e.g., the simultaneous detection of multiple nuclei. To overcome the low signal-to-noise ratio that usually hampers a wider application, we present here an alternative approach to ULF NMR, which makes use of the hyperpolarizing technique signal amplification by reversible exchange (SABRE). In contrast to standard parahydrogen hyperpolarization, SABRE can continuously hyperpolarize 1 H as well as other MR-active nuclei. For simultaneous measurements of 1 H and 19 F under SABRE conditions a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID)-based NMR detection unit was adapted. We successfully hyperpolarized fluorinated pyridine derivatives with an up to 2000-fold signal enhancement in 19 F. The detected signals may be explained by two alternative reaction mechanisms. SABRE combined with simultaneous SQUID-based broadband multinuclear detection may enable the quantitative analysis of multinuclear processes.

Abstract
Frosted branch angiitis is a special form of retinal vasculitis, which has only rarely been reported in the literature. Although the majority of cases of frosted branch angiitis are idiopathic, a systematic clinical work-up should be done in order to exclude other causes, such as infectious and autoimmune diseases. The aim of this study was to correlate the clinical findings with the images obtained during follow-up by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Abstract
We show that a scanning capacitance microscope (SCM) can image buried delta-doped donor nanostructures fabricated in Si via a recently developed atomic-precision scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) lithography technique. A critical challenge in completing atomic-precision nanoelectronic devices is to accurately align mesoscopic metal contacts to the STM defined nanostructures. Utilizing the SCMs ability to image buried dopant nanostructures, we have developed a technique by which we are able to position metal electrodes on the surface to form contacts to underlying STM fabricated donor nanostructures with a measured accuracy of 300 nm. Low temperature (T = 4 K) transport measurements confirm successful placement of the contacts to the donor nanostructures.

Abstract
An inclusive search is presented for new heavy particle pairs produced in √s=7 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC using 4.7±0.1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. The selected events are analyzed in the 2D razor space of M(R), an event-by-event indicator of the heavy particle mass scale, and R, a dimensionless variable related to the missing transverse energy. The third-generation sector is probed using the event heavy-flavor content. The search is sensitive to generic supersymmetry models with minimal assumptions about the superpartner decay chains. No excess is observed in the number of events beyond that predicted by the standard model. Exclusion limits are derived in the CMSSM framework as well as for simplified models. Within the CMSSM parameter space considered, gluino masses up to 800 GeV and squark masses up to 1.35 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level depending on the model parameters. The direct production of pairs of top or bottom squarks is excluded for masses as high as 400 GeV.

Abstract
A search for physics beyond the standard model is performed with events having one or more hadronically decaying τ leptons, highly energetic jets, and large transverse momentum imbalance. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.98 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2011. The number of observed events is consistent with predictions for standard model processes. Lower limits on the mass of the gluino in supersymmetric models are determined.

Abstract
Results are reported from a search for new physics processes in events containing a single isolated high-transverse-momentum lepton (electron or muon), energetic jets, and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a 4.98 fb-1 sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, obtained with the CMS detector at the LHC. Three separate background estimation methods, each relying primarily on control samples in the data, are applied to a range of signal regions, providing complementary approaches for estimating the background yields. The observed yields are consistent with the predicted standard model backgrounds. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the parameter space for the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model, as well as on cross sections for simplified models, which provide a generic description of the production and decay of new particles in specific, topology based final states.
