Production of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] mesons up to high transverse momentum in pp collisions at 2.76 TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2017; 77:339. [PMID: 28943788 PMCID: PMC5586361 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-017-4890-x] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/01/2017] [Accepted: 05/05/2017] [Indexed: 06/07/2023]
Abstract
The invariant differential cross sections for inclusive [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] mesons at midrapidity were measured in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV for transverse momenta [Formula: see text] GeV/c and [Formula: see text] GeV/c, respectively, using the ALICE detector. This large range in [Formula: see text] was achieved by combining various analysis techniques and different triggers involving the electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal). In particular, a new single-cluster, shower-shape based method was developed for the identification of high-[Formula: see text] neutral pions, which exploits that the showers originating from their decay photons overlap in the EMCal. Above 4 GeV/[Formula: see text], the measured cross sections are found to exhibit a similar power-law behavior with an exponent of about 6.3. Next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations differ from the measured cross sections by about 30% for the [Formula: see text], and between 30-50% for the [Formula: see text] meson, while generator-level simulations with PYTHIA 8.2 describe the data to better than 10-30%, except at [Formula: see text] GeV/[Formula: see text]. The new data can therefore be used to further improve the theoretical description of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] meson production.

Flow Dominance and Factorization of Transverse Momentum Correlations in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2017; 118:162302. Abstract
We present the first measurement of the two-particle transverse momentum differential correlation function, P_{2}≡⟨Δp_{T}Δp_{T}⟩/⟨p_{T}⟩^{2}, in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. Results for P_{2} are reported as a function of the relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal angle (Δφ) between two particles for different collision centralities. The Δϕ dependence is found to be largely independent of Δη for |Δη|≥0.9. In the 5% most central Pb-Pb collisions, the two-particle transverse momentum correlation function exhibits a clear double-hump structure around Δφ=π (i.e., on the away side), which is not observed in number correlations in the same centrality range, and thus provides an indication of the dominance of triangular flow in this collision centrality. Fourier decompositions of P_{2}, studied as a function of the collision centrality, show that correlations at |Δη|≥0.9 can be well reproduced by a flow ansatz based on the notion that measured transverse momentum correlations are strictly determined by the collective motion of the system.

Abstract
The azimuthal correlations of D mesons with charged particles were measured with the ALICE apparatus in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] and p-Pb collisions at [Formula: see text] at the Large Hadron Collider. [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] mesons and their charge conjugates with transverse momentum [Formula: see text] and rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system [Formula: see text] (pp collisions) and [Formula: see text] (p-Pb collisions) were correlated to charged particles with [Formula: see text]. The yield of charged particles in the correlation peak induced by the jet containing the D meson and the peak width are compatible within uncertainties in the two collision systems. The data are described within uncertainties by Monte-Carlo simulations based on PYTHIA, POWHEG, and EPOS 3 event generators.

Abstract
IntroductionComorbidities between psychiatric diseases and consumption of traditional substances of abuse are common. Nevertheless, there is no data regarding the use of novel psychoactive substances (NPS) in the psychiatric population.ObjectivesThe purpose of this multicentre survey is to investigate the consumption of a wide variety of psychoactive substances in a young psychiatric sample.MethodsBetween September 2013 and November 2015, a questionnaire has been administered, in ten Italian psychiatric care facilities, to a sample of 671 psychiatric patients (48.5% men; 51.5% women), aged between 18 and 26 years (mean age: 22.24).Results8.2% of the sample declared use of NPS at least once in a lifetime and 2.2% have assumed NPS in the last three months. The NPS more used were synthetic cannabinoids (4.5%), followed by methamphetamine (3.6%). The three psychiatric diagnosis with more frequent NPS consumption were bipolar disorder (23.1%), personality disorders (11.8%) and schizophrenia and related disorders (11.6%). Bipolar disorder was associated with NPS consumption (P < .001). Among the illicit drugs investigated, 31.4% of the sample was cannabis smoker and 10.7% cocaine user. Moreover, 70.6% of the sample declared alcohol use and 47.7% had binge drinking conducts. In univariate regression analysis, bipolar disorder was positive associated with binge drinking while obsessive compulsive disorder resulted negative associated.ConclusionsThe use of novel psychoactive substances in a young psychiatric population appears to be a frequent phenomenon, probably still underestimated. Bipolar disorder shows an association with NPS use. Therefore, careful and constant monitoring and accurate evaluations of possible clinical effects related to their use are necessary.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To ascertain whether house officers (HOs) attain a more satisfactory surgical rotation experience when they perform basic surgical learning activities. We also sought to establish how many and which learning activities HOs achieve and the effect on their surgical experience. METHODOLOGY A questionnaire listing 20 learning activities and questions regarding satisfaction with an overall experience was disseminated to HOs in the UK and Ireland who had completed ≥3 months of surgical rotations. Satisfaction with surgical experience was dichotomised in order to perform logistic regression using R Studio software v0.98. RESULTS The survey was completed by 150 respondents, with 26 % completing at least 10 basic surgical learning activities during their surgical rotation. On multivariate analysis, the completion of these learning activities was significantly associated with a satisfactory rotation experience (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the use of a checklist of surgical activities provided to HOs was associated with a significant increase in the performance of learning activities (p = 0.003). CONCLUSION Surgical HOs who were informed about potential basic surgical learning activities that can be performed during their rotations performed significantly more of these activities. And these activities were associated with a significantly greater satisfaction with surgical rotations. Therefore, we recommend facilitating HOs completion of these activities as this will ensure that basic surgical competencies are achieved and that HOs will be more satisfied with their surgical experience.

Abstract
In vitro tests are of fundamental importance for investigating cell mechanisms in response to mechanical stimuli or the impact of the genotype on cell mechanical properties. In particular, the application of controlled forces to activate specific bio-pathways and investigate their effects, mimicking the role of the cellular environment, is becoming a prominent approach in the emerging field of mechanobiology. Here, we present an on-chip device based on magnetic domain wall manipulators, which allows the application of finely controlled and localized forces on target living cells. In particular, we demonstrate the application of a magnetic force in the order of hundreds of pN on the membrane of HeLa cells cultured on-chip, via manipulation of 1 μm superparamagnetic beads. Such a mechanical stimulus produces a sizable local indentation of the cellular membrane of about 2 μm. Upon evaluation of the beads' position within the magnetic field originated by the domain wall, the force applied during the experiments is accurately quantified via micromagnetic simulations. The obtained value is in good agreement with that calculated by the application of an elastic model to the cellular membrane.

Abstract
One of the major drawbacks that limits the clinical application of nanoparticles is the lack of preliminary investigations related to their biocompatibility, biodegradability and biodistribution. In this work, biodegradable PEGylated polymer nanoparticles (NPs) have been synthesized by using macromonomers based on poly(ε-caprolaconte) oligomers. More in detail, NPs have been produced by adopting a surfactant-free semibatch emulsion polymerization process using PEG chains as a stabilizing agent. The NPs were also labeled with rhodamine B covalently bound to the NPs to quantitatively study their biodistribution in vivo. NPs were investigated in both in vitro and in vivo preclinical systems to study their biodistribution in mice bearing B16/F10 melanoma, as well as their biocompatibility and biodegradability. The NP concentration was evaluated in different tissues at several times after intravenous injection. The disappearance of the NPs from the plasma was biphasic, with distribution and elimination half-lives of 30 min and 15 h, respectively. NPs were retained in tumors and in filter organs for a long time, were still detectable after 7 d and maintained a steady concentration in the tumor for 120 h. 48 h after injection, 70 ± 15% of the inoculated NPs were excreted in the feces. The favorable tumor uptake, fast excretion and absence of cytotoxicity foster the further development of produced NPs as drug delivery carriers.

Abstract
We report the case of a 70-year-old man with symptoms of urinary obstruction and haematuria, with histological diagnosis of primary signet-ring cell carcinoma of the prostate. Almost 90% of the tumour cells contained characteristic intracytoplasmic vacuoles that positively stained with diastase-digested PAS, Alcian blue and mucicarmine. The positive immunostaining for PSA and PSAP confirmed the prostatic origin of the tumour. Although the patient received hormonal therapy, the disease progressed and the patient died 11 months after surgery.

Abstract
Bronchogenic cyst is a congenital anomaly of the primitive foregut. Unusual occurrences in extrathoracic sites have been described in the literature, some of which may clinically simulate neoplasms. We report three additional cases arising near the left adrenal gland, left ovary and gastric wall. Pathological findings are discussed, together with a review of the literature.

Abstract
Tracheal atresia is an uncommon congenital malformation with a high mortality rate. Clinical symptoms occur suddenly after birth. The diagnosis is suspected in any infant in whom improved ventilation is obtained despite aggressive attempts at resuscitation. We describe a small gestational week 34 male newborn affected by tracheal atresia without esophageal fistula with associated fetal growth restriction, ascites and polyhydramnios. Post mortem examination revealed a diffuse cyanotic status, abdominal ascites and a low birth weight. A 3 cm tract of trachea was documented that distantly ended in a blind pouch and without tracheoesophageal fistulae and enlarged bulky lungs connected to each other by a common thin-walled bronchus. Histological examination showed a normal conformed larynx and scratchily cartilaginous disks in the proximal tract of the short trachea. Vascular space referred to small arteries and veins, thin bands of fibrous tissue and adipose tissue were detected under the blind pouch. Lung distal airspaces were lined by premature cubic epithelium separated by a broad poorly vascularized interstitium. A striking interstitial and alveolar edema was remarkable.

Abstract
We present a case of intraparenchymatous capillary-type hemangioma of the testicle in an adult. The patient was a 37-year-old man who showed a rapidly enlarging and palpable mass in left testicle. Radical orchiectomy was performed, and histological examination revealed an unencapsulated lobulated tumour with wide hemorrhagic portions. To our knowledge, the occurrence of rapid enlargement in a testicular hemangioma has not been previously reported, which might be explained by the development of intra-tumoural haemorrhage.

Abstract
The occurrence of hemangioma in the female genital tract, particularly in uterine cervix, is rare. The majority of them show asymptomatic behavior. Surgical excision remains curative in most of the cases. Conservative therapies such as sclerosing agents, cryotherapy, and CO(2) laser excision may be alternatively applied. We present three cases of hemangiomas of the cervix in asymptomatic women, diagnosed as cavernous hemangioma in two cases and capillary hemangioma in one. All tumors were immunoreactive for CD31, CD34, factor-VIII-related antigen. Focal expression of estrogen receptors was detected. No positivity was obtained with progesterone receptor antibodies. The presence of estrogen receptor in the endothelial cells of the hemangioma of the cervix suggests a direct role of this hormone in the hemangioma development. A possible target therapy is discussed.

Abstract
This study investigated the mechanisms of toxicity of glutathione (GSH) depletion in one cell type, the motor neuron. Ethacrynic acid (EA) (100 microM) was added to immortalized mouse motor neurons (NSC-34) to deplete both cytosolic and mitochondrial glutathione rapidly. This caused a drop in GSH to 25% of the initial level in 1 h and complete loss in 4 h. This effect was accompanied by enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with a peak after 2 h of exposure, and by signs of mitochondrial dysfunction such as a decrease in 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazoyl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) (30% less after 4 h). The increase in ROS and the MTT reduction were both EA concentration-dependent. Expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a marker of oxidative stress, also increased. The mitochondrial damage was monitored by measuring the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) from the uptake of rhodamine 123 into mitochondria. MMP dropped (20%) after only 1 h exposure to EA, and slowly continued to decline until 3 h, with a steep drop at 5 h (50% decrease), i.e. after the complete GSH loss. Quantification of DNA fragmentation by the TUNEL technique showed that the proportion of cells with fragmented nuclei rose from 10% after 5 h EA exposure to about 65% at 18 h. These results indicate that EA-induced GSH depletion rapidly impairs the mitochondrial function of motor neurons, and this precedes cell death. This experimental model of oxidative toxicity could be useful to study mechanisms of diseases like spinal cord injury (SCI) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), where motor neurons are the vulnerable population and oxidative stress has a pathogenic role.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A methodology which had a substantial development in the last decade: Office Surgery, is described. This is a branch of Day-Surgery, adapted to provate medical practice with the same characteristics of a Hospital Operating Unit with daily recovery. The aim of the study is to examine the costs-benefit of this methodology compared to international results. METHODS The OS structure is described as well as the specific requirements needed for its hygienic-sanitary certification, giving particular attention to its structural characteristics, according to the relevant legislation and optimal functionality. The personal clinical experience is based on 1771 cases submitted to surgery in such a structure. The aim of the study is to compare the results with those reported by the international literature. The type of surgery performed was mainly esthetic-reconstructive, laser surgery, minor urology and phlebologic surgery. RESULTS The results were promising, with a careful follow-up showing 65 cases of complications (3.6% of the treated cases), thanks also to an accurate criterium of patients' selection including various clinical evaluation parameters and a careful discharge followed by the physician. CONCLUSIONS On the basis of the results, obtained it is possible to confirm that this discipline is interesting as far as patient's grading, cost control morbility and mortality index are concerned, even if it is limited to short-term surgery with local anesthesia or sedation, and low septic and hemorrhagic risk. However, a number of doubts still exists concerning the legislation of this methodology and a right clinical and insurance acknowledgment for the patient and the physician.
