Abstract
Two species of particles in a binary granular system typically do not have the same mean kinetic energy, in contrast to the equipartition of energy required in equilibrium. We investigate the role of the heating mechanism in determining the extent of nonequipartition of kinetic energy. In most experiments, different species are unequally heated at the boundaries. We show by event-driven simulations that differential boundary heating affects nonequipartition even in the bulk of the system. This conclusion is fortified by studying numerical and solvable stochastic models without spatial degrees of freedom. In both cases, even in the limit where heating events are rare compared to collisions, the effect of the heating mechanism persists.

Abstract
A freely floating polymer film, tens of nanometers in thickness, wrinkles under the capillary force exerted by a drop of water placed on its surface. The wrinkling pattern is characterized by the number and length of the wrinkles. The dependence of the number of wrinkles on the elastic properties of the film and on the capillary force exerted by the drop confirms recent theoretical predictions on the selection of a pattern with a well-defined length scale in the wrinkling instability. We combined scaling relations that were developed for the length of the wrinkles with those for the number of wrinkles to construct a metrology for measuring the elasticity and thickness of ultrathin films that relies on no more than a dish of fluid and a low-magnification microscope. We validated this method on polymer films modified by plasticizer. The relaxation of the wrinkles affords a simple method to study the viscoelastic response of ultrathin films.

Abstract
Coherently moving flocks of birds, beasts, or bacteria are examples of living matter with spontaneous orientational order. How do these systems differ from thermal equilibrium systems with such liquid crystalline order? Working with a fluidized monolayer of macroscopic rods in the nematic liquid crystalline phase, we find giant number fluctuations consistent with a standard deviation growing linearly with the mean, in contrast to any situation where the central limit theorem applies. These fluctuations are long-lived, decaying only as a logarithmic function of time. This shows that flocking, coherent motion, and large-scale inhomogeneity can appear in a system in which particles do not communicate except by contact.

Abstract
We assess the relative importance of spatial congestion and lowered temperature in the slowing dynamics of supercooled glycerol near the glass transition. We independently vary both volume V and temperature T by applying high pressure and monitor the dynamics by measuring the dielectric susceptibility. Our results demonstrate that both variables are control variables of comparable importance. However, a generalization of the concept of fragility of a glass-former shows that the dynamics are quantitatively more sensitive to fractional changes in V than T. We identify a connection between the fragility and a recently proposed density-temperature scaling which indicates that this conclusion holds for other liquids and polymers.

Abstract
We study the statistics of the power flux into a collection of inelastic beads maintained in a fluidized steady state by external mechanical driving. The power shows large fluctuations, including frequent large negative fluctuations, about its average value. The relative probabilities of positive and negative fluctuations in the power flux are in close accord with the fluctuation theorem of Gallavotti and Cohen, even at time scales shorter than those required by the theorem. We also compare an effective temperature that emerges from this analysis to the kinetic granular temperature.

Abstract
The final stages of a coin spinning on a flat surface have recently been proposed [H.K. Moffatt, Nature (London) 404, 833 (2000)] as an example of a finite-time singularity, wherein the precession rate of the symmetry axis of the coin diverges as it comes to a stop. We report measurements by high-speed video imaging of the rolling motion of disks and rings on a variety of surfaces. We find that the precession rate, Omega, diverges as a power law in time: Omega(t) proportional, variant (t-t(o))(-1/n), where t(o) is the instant the motion ceases. The exponent n varies between 2.7 and 3.2 under different experimental conditions. The value of n, as well as the systematic dependence of precession rate on coefficients of friction, establishes that the primary mechanism of energy dissipation is rolling friction rather than air drag, as previously suggested.

Abstract
We study fluctuations in the force at the boundary of a 2D granular flow. The forces are mainly impulsive at all flow rates. The probability distribution of impulses decays exponentially at large impulses, as do the forces in a static granular medium. At small impulses, the distribution evolves continuously with flow rate with no indication of the transition from collisional flow to intermittently jamming flows. However, the distribution of the time interval between collisions tends to a power law, P(tau) - tau(-3/2), showing a clear dynamical signature of the approach to jamming.

Abstract
We report experiments on the equipartition of kinetic energy in a mixture of pairs of different types of grains vibrated in two dimensions. In general, the two types of grains do not attain the same granular temperature, T(g) = 1/2m<v(2)>. However, the temperature ratio is constant in the bulk of the system and independent of the vibration velocity. The ratio depends strongly on the ratio of mass densities of the grains, but not on their inelasticity. Also, the temperature ratio is insensitive to compositional variables such as the number fraction of each component and the total number density. We conclude that a single granular temperature, as traditionally defined, does not characterize a multicomponent mixture.

Abstract
We analyze 9.7x10(6) B_B pairs recorded with the CLEO detector to determine the production ratio of charged to neutral B-meson pairs produced at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We measure the rates for B0-->J/psiK((*)0) and B+-->J/psiK((*)+) decays and use the world-average B-meson lifetime ratio to extract the relative widths f(+-) / f(00) = gamma(Upsilon(4S)-->B+B-) / gamma(Upsilon(4S)-->B0 B-0)) = 1.04+/-0.07(stat)+/-0.04(syst). With the assumption that f(+-)+f(00) = 1, we obtain f(00) = 0.49+/-0.02(stat)+/-0.01(syst) and f(+-) = 0.51+/-0.02(stat)+/-0.01(syst). This production ratio and its uncertainty apply to all exclusive B-meson branching fractions measured at the Upsilon(4S) resonance.

Abstract
We have measured the spectrum of velocity fluctuations in a granular system confined to a vertical plane and driven into a homogeneous, steady state by strong vertical vibration. The distribution of horizontal velocities is not Maxwell-Boltzmann and is given by P(v) = Cexp[-beta(|v|/sigma)(alpha)] where alpha = 1.55+/-0.1 at all frequencies and amplitudes investigated, and also for varying boundary conditions. The deviation from Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics occurs in the absence of spatial clustering and does not result from an inhomogeneous average over regions of varying local density. Surprisingly, P(v) has the same shape over a wide range of densities.

Abstract
We report results of searches for charmless hadronic B meson decays to pseudoscalar( pi(+/-), K+/-, pi(0), or K(0)(S))-vector( rho, K(*), or omega) final states. By using 9.7x10(6) BB pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we report the first observation of B(-)--->pi(-)rho(0), B(0)-->pi(+/-)rho(-/+), and B(-)-->pi(-)omega, which are expected to be dominated by hadronic b-->u transitions. The measured branching fractions are (10.4(+3.3)(-3.4)+/-2.1)x10(-6), (27.6(+8.4)(-7.4)+/-4.2)x10(-6), and (11.3(+3.3)(-2.9)+/-1. 4)x10(-6), respectively. Branching fraction upper limits are set for all of the other decay modes investigated.

Abstract
The packing fraction and the pressure drop across gas-fluidized beds of granular media exhibit hysteresis as the gas-flow rate is cycled up and down across the fluidization transition. Presumably this is due to contact forces and transfer of stress to the surrounding walls, and hence should vary nontrivially with the aspect ratio of the sample. Here we present systematic measurements of the variation of hysteresis with particle size and aspect ratio of the sample. Remarkably, the hysteresis scales in a trivial way with these parameters, showing no evidence of long-range effects of the wall. Our measurements also show that the packing fraction becomes 0. 590+/-0.004, independent of particle size and container shape, when the fluidizing flow of gas flow is slowly removed.

Abstract
In a sample of 19 x 10(6) produced B mesons, we have observed the decays B-->eta K(*) and improved our previous measurements of B-->eta'K. The branching fractions we measure for these decay modes are B(B+-->eta K(*+)) = (26.4(+9.6)(-8.2)+/-3.3)x10(-6), B(B(0)-->eta K(*0)) = (13.8(+5.5)(-4.6)+/-1.6)x10(-6), B(B(+)-->eta'K(+) = (80(+10)(-9)+/-7)x10(-6), and B(B(0)-->eta'K0) = (89(+18)(-16)+/-9)x10(-6). We have searched with comparable sensitivity for related decays and report upper limits for these branching fractions.

Abstract
We search for CP-violating charge asymmetries (alpha(CP)) in the B meson decays to K(+/-)pi(-/+), K(+/-)pi(0), K(0)(S)pi(+/-), K(+/-)eta('), and omega pi(+/-). Using 9.66 million upsilon(4S) decays collected with the CLEO detector, the statistical precision on alpha(CP) is in the range of +/-0.12 to +/-0.25 depending on decay mode. While CP-violating asymmetries of up to +/-0.5 are possible within the standard model, the measured asymmetries are consistent with zero in all five decay modes studied.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether patients with isolated pulmonary hypertension secondary to systemic sclerosis (SSc) have a pulmonary vasculature that is responsive to treatment with vasodilators. METHODS Seven SSc patients with pulmonary hypertension underwent right heart catheterization. Pulmonary pressures and cardiac output were measured before and during a systemic intravenous infusion of prostacyclin. RESULTS Both pulmonary arterial mean pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance decreased significantly with prostacyclin infusion (median decrease 11% and 32%, respectively), with a concomitant increase in cardiac output (median increase 26%). No adverse hemodynamic effects were noted during the infusion. CONCLUSION Vasospasm contributes to the pulmonary hypertension complicating SSc. This feature may be amenable to treatment with vasodilators.

Abstract
Diffusing-wave spectroscopy was used to measure the microscopic dynamics of grains in the interior of a three-dimensional flow of sand. The correlation functions show that minutely separated grains fly from collision to collision with large random velocities. On a time scale 10(3) to 10(4) times longer than the average time between collisions, the grains displayed slow, collective rearrangements, which, at the long-time limit, produced diffusive dynamics.

Abstract
We present evidence that there is a phase transition, with a diverging static susceptibility, underlying the transformation of a liquid into a glass. The dielectric susceptibility, at frequencies above its characteristic value, shows a power-law tail extending over many decades to higher frequencies. An extrapolation of this behavior to the temperature where the dynamics becomes arrested indicates a diverging susceptibility. We present evidence for analogous behavior in the magnetic susceptibility of a paramagnet approaching the spin-glass transition. The similarity of the response in these two glassy systems suggests that some conventional lore, such as that the spin glass shows evidence for a diverging correlation length only in a nonlinear but not in the linear susceptibility, may be invalid.

Abstract
The enzymology of the heterodimeric (NiFe) and (NiFeSe) hydrogenases, the monomeric nickel-containing hydrogenases plus the multimeric F420-(NiFe) and NAD(+)-(NiFe) hydrogenases are summarized and discussed in terms of subunit localization of the redox-active nickel and non-heme iron clusters. It is proposed that nickel is ligated solely by amino acid residues of the large subunit and that the non-heme iron clusters are ligated by other cysteine-rich polypeptides encoded in the hydrogenase operons which are not necessarily homologous in either structure or function. Comparison of the hydrogenase operons or putative operons and their hydrogenase genes indicate that the arrangement, number and types of genes in these operons are not conserved among the various types of hydrogenases except for the gene encoding the large subunit. Thus, the presence of the gene for the large subunit is the sole feature common to all known nickel-containing hydrogenases and unites these hydrogenases into a large but diverse gene family. Although the different genes for the large subunits may possess only nominal general derived amino acid homology, all large subunit genes sequenced to date have the sequence R-X-C-X-X-C fully conserved in the amino terminal region of the polypeptide chain and the sequence of D-P-C-X-X-C fully conserved in the carboxyl terminal region. It is proposed that these conserved motifs of amino acids provide the ligands required for the binding of the redox-active nickel. The existing EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) information is summarized and discussed in terms of the numbers and types of ligands to the nickel and the various redox species of nickel defined by EPR spectroscopy. New information concerning the ligands to nickel is presented based on site-directed mutagenesis of the gene encoding the large subunit of the (NiFe) hydrogenase-1 of Escherichia coli. Based on considerations of the biochemical, molecular and biophysical information, ligand environments of the nickel in different redox states of the (NiFe) hydrogenase are proposed.

Abstract
Posterior mediastinal benign teratomas are uncommon neoplasms in infancy; nine cases have been reported so far. A one month old baby was found to have a benign posterior mediastinal teratoma infiltrating the lower oesophagus from the level of the carina through the oesophageal hiatus into the upper abdomen. Partial oesophagectomy provided a successful outcome.

Abstract
Experiments were conducted in a superfusion bioassay system in which the effluent of a bovine main pulmonary artery (generator) was allowed to superfuse a spirally cut precontracted bovine arterial strip (detector), which had been deprived of endothelium. Effluents of endothelium-intact generator relaxed the precontracted detector by an average of 22 +/- 4.1%. Following removal of endothelium of the generator, the relaxing effect of the effluent was only 1%. A rapid increase of transmural pressure in the generator to about 40 mm Hg for 3 min induced contraction of the detector (8.4 +/- 2%) above the histamine-induced tension. In the absence of endothelium, smaller contractions were obtained from the pressurized generator (4.9 +/- 1.8%). This effect was reversible after pressure release. Effluents of endothelium-deprived generator showed no significant vasoactivity. NG-Mono-methyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA, 3.3 x 10(-5) mol/l), a specific inhibitor of nitric oxide (NO), also depressed endothelium-dependent relaxation and caused a 10.5% increase in contraction of the endothelial effluent. When the endothelium-intact generator was exposed to both pressure and L-NMMA, an additive effect was noted. Based on these observations, it was concluded that transient increase of transmural pressure in bovine main pulmonary arteries depresses the endothelium-dependent relaxation and unmasks a small but significant contractile activity of the endothelial effluent.

Abstract
A comparison of amino-terminal amino acid sequences from the large and small subunits of hydrogenases from Desulfovibrio reveals significant differences. These results, in conjunction with antibody analyses, clearly indicate that the iron, iron + nickel, and iron + nickel + selenium containing hydrogenases represent three distinct classes of hydrogenase in Desulfovibrio.

Abstract
Six infants, three of them neonates, were diagnosed as having acute lead poisoning; four of them had acute encephalopathy. All had been given an indigenous preparation, 'Bint Al Zahab' (Daughter of Gold), for abdominal colic and early passage of meconium after birth. Chemical analysis of this powder revealed a lead content of 82.5%. The index case had anaemia with punctate basophilia, dense metaphysial lines on X-ray and markedly raised blood lead levels, arousing a strong index of suspicion for the early diagnosis of subsequent cases. Computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan in three cases showed signs of early cerebral cortical atrophy. The picture of cerebral oedema was absent in the four cases of acute lead encephalopathy. The importance of prevention and the ideal management is discussed.
