Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a porcine acellular dermal matrix (PADM) with or without an enamel matrix derivative (EMD) on gingival recession defects treated with a coronally advanced flap (CAF) in dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Miller class II gingival recession defects (5 mm wide and 7 mm deep) were surgically created on the labial side of bilateral maxillary canines in 12 dogs. After 8 weeks of plaque accumulation, the 24 chronic defects were randomly assigned to one of the following 4 treatments: CAF, CAF with PADM (CAF/PADM), CAF with EMD (CAF/EMD), and CAF with EMD and PADM (CAF/EMD/PADM). The animals were sacrificed 10 weeks after surgery for histologic evaluation. RESULTS In all groups, root coverage was obtained to a varying degree. PADM was well incorporated in gingival connective tissue in the CAF/PADM and in the CAF/EMD/PADM groups. The height of newly formed bone was significantly greater in the CAF/EMD/PADM group than in the CAF and CAF/PADM groups. New cementum with periodontal ligament-like tissue was predominantly found in the CAF/EMD and CAF/EMD/PADM groups. The CAF/EMD/PADM group showed the greatest amount of new cementum among the groups examined, although the difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of the present study, it can be concluded that CAF/EMD/PADM treatment may promote periodontal regeneration in gingival recession defects. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The present results suggest that the combination of EMD and PADM in conjunction with CAF may represent a promising approach for treating single Miller class II gingival recessions.

Abstract
Reversible computing has been studied since Rolf Landauer advanced the argument that has come to be known as Landauer's principle. This principle states that there is no minimum energy dissipation for logic operations in reversible computing, because it is not accompanied by reductions in information entropy. However, until now, no practical reversible logic gates have been demonstrated. One of the problems is that reversible logic gates must be built by using extremely energy-efficient logic devices. Another difficulty is that reversible logic gates must be both logically and physically reversible. Here we propose the first practical reversible logic gate using adiabatic superconducting devices and experimentally demonstrate the logical and physical reversibility of the gate. Additionally, we estimate the energy dissipation of the gate, and discuss the minimum energy dissipation required for reversible logic operations. It is expected that the results of this study will enable reversible computing to move from the theoretical stage into practical usage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been shown to have combinatorial trophic effects with dental pulp stem cells for pulp regeneration. The aim of this investigation is to examine the effects of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in vitro and in vivo compared with those of G-CSF and to assess the potential utility of bFGF as an alternative to G-CSF for pulp regeneration. MATERIALS AND METHODS Five different types of cells were examined in the in vitro effects of bFGF on cell migration, proliferation, anti-apoptosis, neurite outgrowth, angiogenesis, and odontogenesis compared with those of G-CSF. The in vivo regenerative potential of pulp tissue including vasculogenesis and odontoblastic differentiation was also compared using an ectopic tooth transplantation model. RESULTS Basic fibroblast growth factor was similar to G-CSF in high migration, proliferation and anti-apoptotic effects and angiogenic and neurite outgrowth stimulatory activities in vitro. There was no significant difference between bFGF and G-CSF in the regenerative potential in vivo. CONCLUSIONS The potential utility of bFGF for pulp regeneration is demonstrated as a homing/migration factor similar to the influence of G-CSF.

Abstract
Although similar patterns of phenotypic diversification are often observed in phylogenetically independent lineages, differences in the magnitude and direction of phenotypic divergence have been also observed among independent lineages, even when exposed to the same ecological gradients. The stickleback family is a good model with which to explore the ecological and genetic basis of parallel and nonparallel patterns of phenotypic evolution, because there are a variety of populations and species that are locally adapted to divergent environments. Although the patterns of phenotypic divergence as well as the genetic and ecological mechanisms have been well characterized in threespine sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, we know little about the patterns of phenotypic diversification in other stickleback lineages. In eastern Hokkaido, Japan, there are three species of ninespine sticklebacks, Pungitius tymensis and the freshwater type and the brackish-water type of the P. pungitius-P. sinensis species complex. They utilize divergent habitats along coast-stream gradients of rivers. Here, we investigated genetic, ecological and phenotypic divergence among three species of Japanese ninespine sticklebacks. Divergence in trophic morphology and salinity tolerance occurred in the direction predicted by the patterns observed in threespine sticklebacks. However, the patterns of divergence in armour plate were different from those previously found in threespine sticklebacks. Furthermore, the genetic basis of plate variation may differ from that in threespine sticklebacks. Because threespine sticklebacks are well-established model for evolutionary research, the sympatric trio of ninespine sticklebacks will be an invaluable resource for ecological and genetic studies on both common and lineage-specific patterns of phenotypic diversification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Although the application of EMD is a widely accepted periodontal-regenerative therapy, its effects on noncontained intrabony defects are unpredictable because of the lack of a space-making property. The combined use of EMD and autogenous bone grafts reportedly stimulates significant periodontal regeneration in intrabony defects. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of EMD in combination with bone swaging (BS) and injectable calcium phosphate bone cement (CPC), which was placed into the spaces between the grafted swaged bone and the proximal host bone, on periodontal healing in one-wall intrabony defects in dogs. MATERIAL AND METHODS One-wall intrabony defects (3 mm wide and 5 mm deep) were surgically created on the mesial and distal sides of the bilateral mandibular premolars in four dogs. The 16 defects were assigned to one of the following treatments: EMD only, BS only, EMD with BS (EMD + BS), or EMD with BS and CPC (EMD + BS + CPC). The animals were killed 8 wk after surgery for histologic evaluation. RESULTS The height of newly formed bone was significantly greater in the EMD + BS + CPC group (3.73 ± 0.30 mm) than in the BS-only (2.74 ± 0.33 mm; p < 0.05) and EMD + BS (2.88 ± 0.98 mm; p < 0.05) groups. The area of newly formed bone was significantly larger in the EMD + BS + CPC group (5.68 ± 1.66 mm(2)) than in the EMD-only (3.68 ± 0.33 mm(2); p < 0.05), BS-only (3.48 ± 1.26 mm(2); p < 0.05) and EMD + BS (3.38 ± 1.37 mm(2); p < 0.05) groups. The EMD-only (4.63 ± 0.42 mm), EMD + BS (4.67 ± 0.30 mm) and EMD + BS + CPC (4.78 ± 0.54 mm) groups showed significantly greater cementum formation than did the BS-only group (3.93 ± 0.56 mm; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION These results indicate that treatment with EMD + BS + CPC promotes favorable periodontal healing in one-wall intrabony defects in dogs.

Abstract
The gap formation of five core plus peripheral suture techniques for flexor tendon repair was evaluated by cyclic load testing. Fifty pairs of dental roll tendon models were sutured using six-strand Pennington modified Kessler core suture with 4-0 Polypropylene. One-half or three-fourths circumferential interlocking cross-stitch, or three complete circumferential peripheral suture techniques were performed using 6-0 Polypropylene. An initial cyclic load of 10 N for 500 cycles was applied and increased by 5 N for an additional 500 cycles at each new load until rupture. The complete circumferential interlocking cross-stitch had the greatest fatigue strength. The partial circumferential cross-stitches resulted in significantly larger gap formations at both the repaired and unrepaired sides than the complete circumferential sutures, and were also associated with early rupture. The full circumference of the cut tendon must be sutured using an interlocking cross-stitch peripheral suture to improve strength and avoid gap formation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Heart rate variability (HRV) has been used to assess sympathetic and parasympathetic modulation of heart rate. Chronic stress relates to reduced HRV. Malocclusion has effects on quality of life, which can lead to chronic stress. Therefore, we hypothesized that malocclusion, as chronic stress, may contribute to reduced HRV. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between malocclusion and HRV indices in healthy young adults. METHODS Thirty-seven non-smoking healthy subjects, aged 22 to 25 years, were examined. Malocclusion was defined by Angle classification. HRV indices included root mean square of successive differences, low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF) and ratio of LF to HF. The effects of malocclusion on quality of life and mental health were assessed using self-reported questionnaires, the condition-specific Oral Impacts on Daily Performances index (CS-OIDP) and the Hopkins Symptoms Checklist (HSCL), respectively. RESULTS Significantly lower score of HF and higher heart rate (HR) level and CS-OIDP score were observed in subjects with malocclusion (n = 17) compared to those in the control subjects (n = 20) ( P <0.05). There was a positive correlation between HR and score of "anxiety" in HSCL ( P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS The data showed an association between malocclusion and lower HRV. Based on our results, orthodontic treatment might contribute not only to improvement of oral esthetic and functional problems but also to improvement of stress and HRV indices.

Abstract
1. The contribution of chloride to presynaptic inhibition of the crayfish neuromuscular junction during the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and the inhibitory transmitter was investigated. Chloride in van Harreveld's solution was replaced with propionate, acetate, methylsulphate or glycerophosphate and electrical changes were recorded intracellularly and extracellularly with micro-electrodes.2. When the preparation was soaked in Cl-deficient solutions, the quantum content of the excitatory junctional potentials (e.j.p.s), calculated from the number of failures, was increased.3. The presynaptic inhibitory action of GABA was reduced or almost absent when the preparation was soaked in Cl-deficient solution. In Cl-deficient solution the stimulation of the inhibitory axon showed little or no inhibitory action on e.j.p.s.4. If GABA was applied shortly after the outside solution was changed to the Cl-deficient one, the frequency of the spontaneous e.j.p.s was increased transiently.5. It is suggested that GABA or the inhibitory transmitter act on the presynaptic excitatory terminal and predominantly increase its permeability to chloride.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Few studies have longitudinally investigated the relationship between periodontal disease progression and occlusal factors in individual subjects during the maintenance phase of periodontal therapy. The aim of this cohort study was to investigate the relationship between biting ability and the progression of periodontal disease in the maintenance phase. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 194 patients were monitored for 3 years during the maintenance phase of periodontal therapy. The subjects with disease progression (Progress group) were defined based on the presence of >or= 2 teeth demonstrating a longitudinal loss of proximal attachment of >or= 3 mm or tooth-loss experience as a result of periodontal disease during the study period. The subjects with high occlusal force were diagnosed as men who showed an occlusal force of more than 500 N and women who showed an occlusal force of more than 370 N. The association between biting ability and the progression of periodontitis was investigated using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS There were 83 subjects in the Progress group and 111 subjects in the Non-progress group. A backward, stepwise logistic regression model showed that the progression of periodontal disease was significantly associated with the presence of one or more teeth with a high clinical attachment level (CAL) of >or= 7 mm (odds ratio: 2.397; 95% confidence interval: 1.306-4.399) ( p = 0.005) and low occlusal force (odds ratio: 2.352; 95% confidence interval: 1.273-4.346) ( p = 0.006). CONCLUSION The presence of one or more teeth with a high CAL of >or= 7 mm and low occlusal force might be possible risk factors for periodontal progression in the maintenance phase of periodontal therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The carbohydrate chains represented by mucins (MUCs) are expressed by a variety of normal and malignant secretory epithelial cells and induce a variety of immunoreactions. Tn and sialyl Tn antigens are tumour-associated carbohydrate antigens which are borne on the core proteins of mucins. The purpose of this study is to investigate the existence of tumour-associated carbohydrate antigens in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS . We examined the expression of Tn and sialyl Tn antigens in synovial tissues from RA and osteoarthritis (OA) patients by immunohistochemistry. In addition, mucins from synovial fluid (SF) from RA patients are purified by gel filtration and density gradient ultracentrifugation and the existence of these antigens examined by dot and Western blotting. RESULTS We found that Tn and sialyl Tn antigens were strongly expressed in synovial cells and infiltrating mononuclear cells on the sublining layer and lymphoid follicles in synovial tissues in RA compared with those in osteoarthritis. Tn and sialyl Tn antigens were detected in purified mucins of SF from RA patients. CONCLUSIONS Tumour-like synovial hyperplasia cells expressed Tn and sialyl Tn antigens. This finding suggests that the mucins exhibiting with abnormal glycosylation may be in part responsible for synovial hyperplasia, leading to the joint destruction in the pathogenesis of RA.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Muscle tone of the ankle plantar flexors was measured using the Ankle Plantar Flexors Tone Scale, the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), quality of muscle reaction with the Modified Tardieu Scale, and passive resistive joint torque with a handheld dynamometer. Intrarater and interrater reliabilities were assessed using the Cohen kappa coefficient (kappa). Internal consistency was assessed using the Cronbach alpha (alpha). Concurrent validity was assessed with the Spearman rank correlation coefficient (rho). RESULTS The Ankle Plantar Flexors Tone Scale included 3 items: stretch reflex, middle range resistance, and final range resistance. Intrarater and interrater reliabilities and internal consistency of the Ankle Plantar Flexors Tone Scale showed moderate to excellent agreement (kappa=.63-.94; alpha=.81). Concurrent validity of the Ankle Plantar Flexors Tone Scale was low to very high among the 3 items of the Ankle Plantar Flexors Tone Scale and existing measures. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient showed high to very high correlation between stretch reflex and quality of muscle reaction as indices of the central component (rho=.85-.94). Middle range resistance and final range resistance as indices of the peripheral component had low to moderate correlation with passive resistive joint torque using a handheld dynamometer and MAS (rho=.44-.68). CONCLUSIONS The Ankle Plantar Flexors Tone Scale allows measurement of ankle plantar flexor tone in greater detail than existing subjective measures and provides a reliable and valid method for research and clinical use.

Abstract
The fatigue strength of three peripheral suture techniques for flexor tendon repair was compared by cyclic loading of repairs in a cotton dental roll tendon model. Thirty pairs of dental roll were sutured using only peripheral sutures with 6-0 polypropylene. An initial cyclic load of 5 N for 500 cycles was applied and increased by 5 N for an additional 500 cycles at each new load until rupture. The fatigue strength of an interlocking cross-stitch suture was 113% greater than a running suture and 36% greater than a standard cross-stitch suture. Interlocking the cross-stitch prevented shortening of the transverse portions under load and appears to be a useful technique for increasing the strength of the peripheral suture.

Abstract
The multilayer sheets (2-10 layers), which consisted of alternately cumulated collagen and calcium phosphate layers with the thickness of 6-8microm in each layer, were prepared. The inorganic layer was mineralized by means of an alkaline phosphatase-catalyzed hydrolysis of water-soluble phosphate esters in the presence of calcium ions. The calcium phosphate, which was formed on the collagen, was assayed as a mixture of hydroxyapatite (main) and amorphous calcium phosphate. The multilayer sheets were not only strong mechanically but also semitransparent and flexible in a dry state. Furthermore, the collagen/calcium phosphate multilayer sheets did not swell in water to keep the original morphology. As a scaffold, the sheets having the calcium phosphate layer on the top supported the attachment and growth of L929 fibroblast cells. The enzymatic mineralization and the collagen/calcium phosphate composite sheets were discussed in conjunction with physicochemical and biological properties.

Abstract
In order to investigate the relationship between lens opacities and the various modifications of lens proteins, we analyzed and compared the properties of lens proteins of 85-day old normal Wistar rats and the hereditary cataract model, ICR/f rats. The present study identified many differences between normal and mutant lens proteins. In the ICR/f mutant rats, the relative amounts of gamma-crystallin decreased and high molecular weight (HMW) protein increased. Racemization and isomerization of Asp-151 of alpha A-crystallin was observed in the mutant ICR/f rats, and Met-1 of alpha A-crystallin was oxidized to methionine sulfoxide. These modifications were not found in the age-matched normal rats. These tendencies are consistent with aged and cataractous human lenses.

Abstract
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is one of the most common malignancies in childhood, with a widely variable outcome. Differences in the behavior and prognosis of the leukemia suggest that ALL can be divided into several biologic subgroups. We analyzed the loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of 6q, 9p, 11q and 12p using 31 microsatellite sites to determine their overall frequency and clinical value. We have studied 244 primary ALL samples obtained from the Multicenter Trial ALL-BFM 90 of Childhood ALL group. These patients have now been followed clinically for over 8 years. LOH occurred in 169 (69%) individuals in the following frequencies: 6q, 49 patients (20%); 9p, 97 patients (40%); 11q, 29 patients (12%); 12p, 60 patients (25%). Clinical data showed that those with 6q LOH were younger (P = 0.01) and had lower WBC counts (P = 0.02); patients with 9p LOH more frequently had CNS involvement (P = 0.01) and T cell phenotype (P = 0.0001); individuals with 11q LOH had a good response to induction chemotherapy (P = 0.02); those with 12p LOH were younger (P = 0.005), frequently had precursor B ALL (P = 0.001), and had a longer event-free survival (P = 0.05). Taken together, these data confirm that LOH is a very frequent alteration in childhood ALL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The selection of candidates for exercise training among patients with intermittent claudication is still a matter of debate. PATIENTS AND METHODS Forty-nine patients with intermittent claudication due to arteriosclerosis obliterans were tested. Forty-six patients were men and 3 were women, with an average age of 65 years (range, 46 to 76 years). The patients walked on a treadmill at 2.4 km/h on a 12% upgrade followed by an appropriate period of rest for 30 minutes twice a day during a 3-week hospitalization. Programs were individualized for each patient. Four parameters were assessed after exercise training: (1) Ankle-brachial index (ABI) at rest, (2) Fall in ABI after 40 m of treadmill walking (ABI Fall 40), (3) the recovery time (RT 40) required for the ABI to return to resting levels after 40 m of walking, and (4) the maximal walking distance (MWD) on the treadmill. RESULTS The average ABI at rest before the 3-week training period was 0.60 +/- 0.02 (mean +/- SE), and after training it was 0.62 +/- 0.02. There was a small although not statistically significant increase in the ABI after training. This increase in the ABI did not exceed 0.21. The average ABI Fall 40 before training was 0.36 +/- 0.01, and after training it was 0.30 +/- 0.02. The average RT 40 before training was 9.9 +/- 0.8 min, and after training it was 6.2 +/- 0.6 min. There were significant decreases in the ABI Fall 40 and RT 40 after training (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). The MWD increased after training in 48 of the 49 patients. The average MWD increased from 134 +/- 13 m to 226 +/- 32 m after training (p < 0.001). The occlusion levels did not influence the results as training effects and hemodynamic parameters. Fourteen of 49 patients desired arterial reconstruction after exercise training. CONCLUSIONS Patients with shorter RT 40's before training achieved greater increases in the MWD after training. In patients with an RT 40 under 12 min, exercise training is indicated. However, there is some discrepancy between the increase in MWD and the degree of satisfaction in individual patients.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the effect of smoking on soluble adhesion molecules in middle-aged diabetic patients. METHODS One hundred out-patients with Type 2 diabetes and 100 age- and sex-matched non-diabetic subjects without clinical macrovascular disease were selected. Soluble serum levels of adhesion molecules were analysed using enzyme immunoassay. Carotid atherosclerosis was assessed using an ultrasound system. RESULTS When compared with non-diabetic subjects, soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), and sE-selectin were found at significantly high levels in diabetic patients and significantly higher levels of sICAM-1, sE-selectin, and sP-selectin were observed in current smokers than never-smokers among diabetic or non-diabetic subjects, respectively. The combined, but not enhanced, effects of diabetes mellitus and smoking were observed in sICAM-1 and sE-selectin levels. Additionally, levels of sICAM-1 (P < 0.05) and sE-selectin (P < 0.01), but not sP-selectin, were high in ex-smokers when compared with never-smokers among diabetic patients. Diabetic smokers were also found to have marked carotid atherosclerosis, which was related to increased levels of sICAM-1. CONCLUSIONS Our present study shows that levels of adhesion molecules were higher in diabetic smokers than diabetic non-smokers or non-diabetic smokers, and that cessation after chronic smoking did not restore the levels of sICAM-1 and sE-selectin, though sP-selectin levels were restored. These data suggest a possible mechanism for accelerated atherosclerosis induced by smoking in patients with diabetes.

Abstract
The crystallins in the lenses of ICR/f mutation rat, a known hereditary cataract model, were analyzed during cataractogenesis. Opacification of the mutant lenses was found to be accompanied by changes in crystallin structure and composition, including several deletions of the N-terminals of beta-crystallins and low molecular weight alpha- crystallins. Because similar deletions were observed when the soluble fraction of normal lens protein was incubated with calpain, we considered that calpain could be related to the deletions in mutant lenses. Although measurement of the content of calpain protein by the ELISA method revealed no significant difference between mutant and normal lenses, it was found that the concentrations of Ca2+ and K+ were different between the two lenses and that calpain activity was dependent on both ion concentrations. Endogenous m-calpain in the soluble fraction from normal lenses was activated by addition of 1 mm calcium chloride in the presence of 50 mm KCl (the same concentration as in mutant lenses), and insoluble protein was found in the fraction 1 d after calpain activation. On the other hand, the presence of 120 mm KCl (the concentration in normal lenses) inhibited calpain activity and prevented this insolubilization. These results suggest that calpain in mutant lenses is involved in the proteolysis of crystallins and the progression of cataract formation.

Abstract
Flight instrumentation for the analyses of extraterrestrial environments must often perform under severely restricted conditions. Often, the detection and identification of a multitude of chemical species is required to fulfill the scientific objectives of the mission. It is therefore important that the analytical instrumentation have universal response. The gas chromatograph-ion mobility spectrometer (GC-IMS) has the potential to provide the sample separation, identification and sensitivity necessary for a successful analysis. However, the IMS has poor sensitivity for the C1-C4 alkanes. The abundance of these molecules at various extraterrestrial sites is often of great importance to exobiologists. This study focuses on optimizing IMS sample ionization mechanisms for the C1-C4 alkanes and other hydrocarbons of interest to exobiology.

Abstract
Central to many cancers is the aberrant expression of genes that regulate the cell cycle including the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors known as p15INK4b and p16INK4a, p14ARF and the retinoblastoma (RB) protein. We performed a detailed analysis of the methylation status of these genes by methylation specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP) in tumor cells of 35 adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) patients. We found in nine of 35 cases (26%) at least one gene methylated. The frequency of p15INK4b methylation was 7 of 35 (20%). The incidence of methylation of p14ARF and p16INK4a was two of 35 (6%) and one of 35 (3%), respectively. The RB gene was not found to be methylated in any of the ATL samples. The data indicate that inactivation of these cell cycle regulatory genes by hypermethylation is important in the development of ATL.

Abstract
Between may 1993 and march 2001, 2 patients with tetralogy of Fallot and an anomalous coronary artery crossing the right ventricular outflow tract underwent intracardiac repairs. The anomalous coronary arteries included the left anterior descending from the right coronary artery (case 1), and the right coronary artery from the left coronary artery (case 2). In case 1, we turned down a flap of anterior wall of the main pulmonary artery, sutured it to the edge of the right ventriculotomy and placed a bicusped patch to the anterior aspect. In case 2, we underwent transpulmonary-transatrial repair and placed a transannular patch along by the left coronary artery. Right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction was successful in 2 cases.

Abstract
Protein synthesis involves two methionine-isoaccepting tRNAs, an initiator and an elongator. In eubacteria, mitochondria, and chloroplasts, the addition of a formyl group gives its full functional identity to initiator Met-tRNA(Met). In Escherichia coli, it has been shown that the specific action of methionyl-tRNA transformylase on Met-tRNA(f)(Met) mainly involves a set of nucleotides in the acceptor stem, particularly a C(1)A(72) mismatch. In animal mitochondria, only one tRNA(Met) species has yet been described. It is admitted that this species can engage itself either in initiation or elongation of translation, depending on the presence or absence of a formyl group. In the present study, we searched for the identity elements of tRNA(Met) that govern its formylation by bovine mitochondrial transformylase. The main conclusion is that the mitochondrial formylase preferentially recognizes the methionyl moiety of its tRNA substrate. Moreover, the relatively small importance of the tRNA acceptor stem in the recognition process accounts for the protection against formylation of the mitochondrial tRNAs that share with tRNA(Met) an A(1)U(72) motif.

Abstract
Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia with clinical symptoms that include punching, kicking, yelling and leaping out of bed in sleep. Polysomnographic (PSG) finding showed REM sleep without muscle atonia. Clonazepam is generally used for treating RBD symptoms but melatonin was reported to be effective so we reconfirmed the effect of melatonin on RBD patients in the present study. We used melatonin (3-9 mg/day) which could ameliorate problem sleep behaviors remarkably, as well as %tonic activity in PSG variables. In the present study, melatonin was reconfirmed to be effective in RBD symptoms, especially for patients with low melatonin secretion, while its mechanism was not clearly known in the present study.

Abstract
We examined the differences between the results of an automatic sleep analysis system and inspection decision. Subjects were 10 males (average age 21.6 years). One section consists of 20 s records. The sections that deviated from the algorithm could not be decided. Each sleep stage decided by automatic analysis was compared with the inspection decision. The agreement ratio of stage 3 was 91.6% in the highest, and followed by stage 2, stage 4, stage W and stage 1. The lowest was 62.5% for movement time. The total agreement ratio was 85.8%. The agreement ratios of the apnea index (AI) and the apnea hypopnea index (AHI) were relatively high, but for types of sleep apnea, agreement ratios require improvement.

Abstract
To investigate the situation and problems contingent to hypnotic use and withdrawal, we conducted a questionnaire of outpatients. Only 41% of the patients were satisfied with their sleep and 53% of the patients took hypnotics. As regards the period, 83% of users had used them for more than 1 year and 19% had used them for more than 10 years. Although 90% of patients perceived efficacy of hypnotics, 67% felt more or less anxious about hypnotic use. Sixty-seven per cent of patients had actually withdrawn from the drugs or decreased dosage before. More than half the patients' conditions worsened after the withdrawal or reducing dosage.

Abstract
Nine patients with an aortic graft infection presented after undergoing aortic grafting. Seven of 9 patients underwent an initial aortic reconstruction in our hospital. The incidence of aortic graft infection was 1.5% (7/456). There were 6 cases of paraprosthetic infection and 3 cases of aortointestinal fistulas. The treatments consisted of a complete graft excision and an axillofemoral bypass in 6 patients, a complete graft excision alone, a partial graft excision and a femorofemoral bypass, and the preservation of the graft with omental wrapping and irrigation in 1 each. Broad-spectrum antibiotics were intravenously administered to all patients and were then replaced by selective antibiotics for the responsible organisms. All surviving patients received antibiotics orally for 3-6 months. The early postoperative mortality rate was 11.1%. Aortoduodenal fistula occurred in 1 patient with graft excision alone. Graft thrombosis occurred in 2 patients with an axillofemoral bypass. No late graft infection or stump blowout occurred in any patient. We believe that a complete excision of the infected graft as well as the maintenance of distal tissue perfusion is necessary. However, based on the condition of the patient, the appearance of the operating field, and the difficulty of a repeat operation, we would like to stress the importance of selecting the best and safest treatment plan for each case.

Abstract
We pharmacokinetically examined the effect of gamma-butyrobetaine, a precursor of L-carnitine, on the change of fatty acid metabolism in juvenile visceral steatosis (JVS) mice, which have systemic L-carnitine deficiency due to lack of L-carnitine transporter activity. The concentrations of total free fatty acid (FFA), palmitic acid and stearic acid in the liver of JVS mice were significantly higher than those in wild-type mice. After intravenous administration of gamma-butyrobetaine (50 mg kg(-1)), the concentration of L-carnitine in the plasma of JVS mice reached about twice that of the control level and levels in the brain, liver and kidney were also significantly increased, whereas those in wild-type mice hardly changed. Although the plasma concentrations of FFA in both types of mice were unchanged after administration of gamma-butyrobetaine, the concentrations of palmitic acid and stearic acid were significantly decreased. In particular, the liver concentration of FFA in JVS mice was decreased to the wild-type control level, accompanied by significant decreases in long-chain fatty acids, palmitic acid and stearic acid, whereas those in wild-type mice were not changed. These results suggest that gamma-butyrobetaine can be taken up into organs, including the liver, of JVS mice, and transformed to L-carnitine. Consequently, administration of gamma-butyrobetaine may be more useful than that of L-carnitine itself for treatment of primary deficiency of carnitine due to a functional defect of the carnitine transporter.

Abstract
Collagen (type I from calf-skin) was chemically modified by 4-butyrothiolactone to obtain the mercapto group-bearing collagen (collagenSH), which possessed SH groups in 8-19 M% of a total amino acid residues. The triple helical strands of the collagen was not completely perturbed to exhibit the rotary dispersion [theta]221, which was as much as 70% of an original intensity of the collagen. In the presence of the oxygen dissolved in water, the collagenSH was cross-linked by disulfide bonds to afford the collagenSS. The collagenSS could preserve about 15 and 40% of an original helix structure at 55-70 degrees C and in 2mm sodium dodecyl sulfate, respectively. The film made of the collagenSS exhibited the tensile strength as high as 36 MPa and was insoluble in most organic solvents including water. The collagenSS film was more resistant to degradation by collagenase (type I) than the collagen film. The collagenSS film supported the growth of L929 fibroblast cell in a manner similar to a collagen film.

Abstract
Preoperative chemotherapy should be effective against cancers and have few side effects that would prevent surgery. We investigated the histological effects and side effects of low- and high-dose CDDP chemotherapy against oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and discuss the therapeutic benefits of each regimen. Thirty-six patients were divided into two groups as follows, in a non-randomized manner: A) low-dose CDDP (17 patients): CDDP 5 mg/m2/day + UFT 400 mg/day (day 1-5) (1 or 2 courses), B) high-dose CDDP (19 patients): CDDP 70-100 mg/m2/day (day 1) + peplomycin 5 mg/day (day 2-6) (1 or 2 courses). Curative surgery was conducted 1 week after protocol A or 2-3 weeks after protocol B. The histological antitumor effects were evaluated with Ohboshi & Shimosato's classification using surgical materials of primary tumors. In this classification, grade IIB, III and IV were as effective. Maximum histological effect was seen with grade IIB for regimen A and grade IV for regimen B. Four of 17 patients (23.5%) responded to regimen A and 13 of 19 patients (68.4%) to regimen B. Side effects, such as nausea, vomiting and myelosuppression, appeared with regimen B, but were seen little with regimen A. The 2-year survival rate was 93.3% with regimen A and 78.9% with regimen B. With regimen A, the 2-year survival rate of effective cases was 100% and that of ineffective cases was 91.7%. With regimen B, the rate was 92.3% and 50.0%, respectively. Effective cases showed good prognosis in both groups. The low-dose CDDP regimen was not so effective against primary tumors histologically, but the prognosis was good. The low-dose CDDP regimen appears to be useful for preoperative chemotherapy of oral SCC.

Abstract
Vertical concentration profiles of atmospheric SO(2) of the order of parts in 10(9) (ppb) were measured by a multiwavelength differential absorption lidar system. The error that was due to O(3) and aerosols was successfully reduced by a three-wavelength dual differential absorption lidar (DIAL), and a SO(2) concentration of 1.2 ppb for 2400-3000-m altitude was obtained with 300-m range resolution. The measurement error in dual DIAL was estimated to be <1.1 ppb when several factors were considered. The influence of O(3) on SO(2) measurement error was experimentally evaluated from simultaneous measurements of atmospheric SO(2) and O(3) by two conventional DIAL pairs, each using two wavelengths.
