Impulse noise - measurement and assessment of the risk of noise induced hearing loss

This work was an attempt to characterize the various types of noise impulses in terms of their excitation mechanisms. It also studied how impulse noise affects the Leq, on the basis of measurements made at a number of workplaces. The paper concludes with a review of the incidence of hearing damage among groups of personnel exposed to different types of noise in the building industry.

[Our experiences with urethro-cystometry, especially the value of the urethral profile in the diagnosis of urinary incontinence]

With the help of the findings of simultaneous urethrocystometry in 34 women with continence the course of the urethra-pressure profile is established. Here it is referred to the value of this method in the preoperative differential diagnostics of incontinence of urine in women.

Basing on the pH values of the umbilical artery of a total of 3,421 births in 1977 and in the first half of 1978, the acidosis morbidity associated with the various methods of delivery and dependent upon the weight at birth is determined, and compared with the Apgar score. The results are discussed with reference to literature. It is concluded from this study that electronic monitoring should be intensified, that indication for abdominal Caesarean section should be considered on a relatively liberal scale, and that the quota of underweight children should be reduced further.

[Experimental studies on the effect of long-term oestrogens on contrast excretion during intravenous urography (author's transl)]

The possible connection between long continued oestrogen intake and dilatation of the upper urinary tract was examined urographically in nine female rabbits. The degree of dilatation was judged on eleven parameters. The results of the study indicate that oestrogens without simultaneous mechanical influence on the urinary tract does not lead to dilatation of the pelvis or ureter. The results are illustrated graphically and are compared with the findings in the literature.

[Clinical studies on the connection between preceding abruptio placentae and abortus and subsequent complications during the afterbirth phase (author's transl)]

2176 vaginal deliveries at Jena University Hospital were selected at random to check whether in these patients it is possible to establish the connection postulated by some authors between preceding premature termination of pregnancy and the mass incidence of afterbirth haemorrhages, as well as of necessary surgery in the afterbirth phase. There was no significant increase of afterbirth complications following abruptio placentae and abortus, whereas there are partly statistically significant differences in the incidence of surgery reauired in children of normal weight of underweight.

[Clinical investigations relating to a causal connection between abruptio placentae and subsequent birth of an underweight child (author's transl)]

The question was studied as to whether there is a causal connection between abruptio and birth of an underweight child in the subsequent pregnancy. While the phenomena involved are still largely unexplained, though clearly manifold, which can lead to the birth of "low birth weight children", it is shown that abruptio cannot be regarded as a prime risk factor. A comparison with the international literature shows that the specific features of the patient group investigated must always be taken into account when answering this question.

[Experimental investigations on the effect of progesterone on contrast excretion (author's transl)]

The relationship between high dose progesterone treatment and pregnancy and dilatation of the upper urinary tract was investigated by doing intravenous urograms on eight female rabbits. Ten features of the urogram were studied. It was concluded that the administration of sex hormones to rabbits without any mechanical change in the ureters, did not lead to urographically demonstrable dilatation of the ureters. Negative findings in pregnant animals indicate that the mechanical situation in rabbits differs from that found in human pregnancy. The results are discussed with relation to the available literature.

[Urographic investigations on the effect of high dose progestagen therapy (author's transl)]

The relationship between high dose progestagen treatment and changes on the intravenous urogram were studied in 27 patients. For this purpose, six specific features in the urogram were examined. Our findings in the patients available to use indicate that there is no demonstrable dilatation of the renal pelves and ureters as a result of the administration of progestational substances alone. These results are discussed in relation to the relevant literature.
