Abstract
Despite the significant burden of influenza outbreaks, active disease monitoring has been largely absent in the Middle East, including Lebanon. In this study we characterized influenza virus in 440 nasopharyngeal swabs collected from patients with acute respiratory infections during two influenza seasons in Lebanon. Influenza A(H3N2) was dominant in the 2013/14 season while the A(H1N1)pdm09 and B/Yamagata strains were most prevalent in the 2014/15 season. All tested isolates were susceptible to 4 neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir, zanamivir, peramivir and laninamivir). Genetic analysis of the haemagglutinin gene revealed multiple introductions of influenza viruses into Lebanon from different geographic sources during each season. Additionally, large data gaps were identified in the Middle East region, as indicated by the lack of current influenza sequences in the database from many countries in the region.

Abstract
Raman spectroscopy of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is reviewed based on our recent theoretical and experimental works. First, we discuss the semi-classical and quantum mechanical description for the polarization dependence of Raman spectra of TMDs in which the optical dipole transition matrix elements as a function of laser excitation energy are important for understanding the polarization dependence of the Raman intensity and Raman tensor. Overviewing the symmetry of TMDs, we discuss the dependence of the Raman spectra of TMDs on layer thickness, polarization, laser energy and the structural phase. Furthermore, we discuss the Raman spectra of twisted bilayer and heterostructures of TMDs. Finally, we give our perspectives on the Raman spectroscopy of TMDs.

Abstract
Peripheral anorectic hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1, cholecystokinin (CCK)-8 and leptin, suppress food intake. The newly-identified anorectic neuropeptide, nesfatin-1, is synthesised in both peripheral tissues and the central nervous system, particularly by various nuclei in the hypothalamus and brainstem. In the present study, we examined the effects of i.p. administration of GLP-1 and CCK-8 and co-administrations of GLP-1 and leptin at subthreshold doses as confirmed by measurement of food intake, on nesfatin-1-immunoreactive (-IR) neurones in the hypothalamus and brainstem of rats by Fos immunohistochemistry. Intraperitoneal administration of GLP-1 (100 μg/kg) caused significant increases in the number of nesfatin-1-IR neurones expressing Fos-immunoreactivity in the supraoptic nucleus (SON), the area postrema (AP) and the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) but not in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), the arcuate nucleus (ARC) or the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA). On the other hand, i.p. administration of CCK-8 (50 μg/kg) resulted in marked increases in the number of nesfatin-1-IR neurones expressing Fos-immunoreactivity in the SON, PVN, AP and NTS but not in the ARC or LHA. No differences in the percentage of nesfatin-1-IR neurones expressing Fos-immunoreactivity in the nuclei of the hypothalamus and brainstem were observed between rats treated with saline, GLP-1 (33 μg/kg) or leptin. However, co-administration of GLP-1 (33 μg/kg) and leptin resulted in significant increases in the number of nesfatin-1-IR neurones expressing Fos-immunoreactivity in the AP and the NTS. Furthermore, decreased food intake induced by GLP-1, CCK-8 and leptin was attenuated significantly by pretreatment with i.c.v. administration of antisense nesfatin-1. These results indicate that nesfatin-1-expressing neurones in the brainstem may play an important role in sensing peripheral levels of GLP-1 and leptin in addition to CCK-8, and also suppress food intake in rats.

Abstract
From January 1986 to December 1988, 85 patients (55 men and 30 women, mean age 59 years) with metastatic liver tumors were treated with hepatic artery embolization (TAE) or infusion (HAI). Sixty-eight patients with successful catheterization were treated with TAE using iodized oil (Lipiodol) mixed with anticancer agent (ACA). In 12 of 68 patients with hypervascular tumors gelatin sponge was added. Patients with unsuccessful catheterization were treated with hepatic artery infusion of ACA. Forty-three patients received oral chemotherapy following TAE or HAI. Overall, the 6-month, and 1- and 2-year survival rates were 69.5, 31.8 and 4.1 per cent, respectively (mean 233 days). A univariate analysis of prognostic factors showed that number of metastases, stage, treatment times and oral chemotherapy were all significant factors (p<0.05). Ascites, jaundice, percentage of hepatic replacement and treatment protocol also had some influence (p<0.1). Sex, age, primary site, elevation of tumor markers, other metastatic lesions, portal vein involvement and difference in anticancer agent had no prognostic significance. A multivariate analysis using Cox's proportional hazard model revealed that the number of treatments had the most important prognostic significance, followed by oral chemotherapy, stage and percentage of hepatic replacement.

Abstract
The endoscopic and radiographic findings of 45 gastric adenomas in 39 patients were followed for 6 months to 13 years and compared with type IIa early gastric cancer observed in 9 patients. Difficulties in the differential diagnosis of these disorders were evaluated. The following features were suggestive of gastric adenomas: clustered lesions; protuberance with gentle slope; smooth surface; and relatively young patients. Discrimination of adenoma from type IIa early gastric cancer is often difficult by visual observation alone; biopsy was essential in most patients. A group III adenoma verified on biopsy should be followed closely because the lesion may harbor a cancer (so-called carcinoma-in-adenoma) or a cancer may later develop.

Abstract
We have previously developed a reproducible model of transient forebrain ischaemia in rats by bilateral carotid artery occlusion combined with temporary increase of ICP. With this model, reversibility of the energy metabolism and intracellular pH (pHi) was investigated by 31P-MRS during 120 min of recirculation in three groups of, respectively, 30, 60, and 120 min of ischaemia. With the induction of ischaemia, ATP and phosphocreatine (PCr) disappeared, and measurement of pHi showed severe acidosis in all rats. In the 30 min ischaemia group, both energy metabolism and pHi recovered almost completely. In the 60 min ischaemia group, ATP recovered to 74% of control values, but pHi showed full recovery. In the 120 min ischaemia group, ATP recovered to about 50% of control values, and recovery of pHi was variable. Showing logarithmical changes during recirculation in ATP and PCr, the rate of metabolic recovery was fast during 60 min of recirculation, but it decreased and reached plateau thereafter in all groups. Recovery of pHi was affected by ATP levels, and was precipitously accelerated as ATP levels exceeded 50% of pre-ischaemic values. These results suggest that prolongation of the duration of ischaemia limits the restoration of the energy state, and the quality of pHi recovery after cerebral ischaemia is affected by the degree of ATP recovery during 60 min of recirculation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In a rat monoiodoacetic acid (MIA)-induced arthritis model, the amount of MIA commonly used was too high, resulting in rapid bone destruction. We examined the effect of MIA concentrations on articular cartilage and infrapatellar fat pad (IFP). We also established an original system for "macroscopic cartilage and bone score" and "IFP inflammation score" specific to the rat MIA-induced arthritis model. DESIGN Male Wistar rats received a single intra-articular injection of MIA in the knee. The amount of MIA was 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, and 1 mg respectively. Articular cartilage was evaluated at 2-12 weeks. IFP was also observed at 3-14 days. RESULTS Macroscopically, low MIA doses induced punctate depressions on the cartilage surface, and cartilage erosion proceeded slowly over 12 weeks, while higher MIA doses already induced cartilage erosion at 2 weeks, followed by bone destruction. MIA macroscopic cartilage and bone score, OARSI histological score, and Mankin score increased in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The IFP inflammation score peaked at 5 days in low dose groups, then decreased, while in high dose groups, the IFP score continued to increase over 14 days due to IFP fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS Punctate depressions, cartilage erosion, and bone destruction were observed in the MIA-induced arthritis model. The macroscopic cartilage and bone scoring enabled the quantification of cartilage degeneration and demonstrated that MIA-induced arthritis progressed in a dose- and time-dependent manner. IFP inflammation scores revealed that 0.2 mg MIA induced reversible synovitis, while 1 mg MIA induced fibrosis of the IFP body.

Abstract
Oxytocin (OXT)-containing neurosecretory cells in the parvocellular divisions of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), which project to the medulla and spinal cord, are involved in various physiological functions, such as sensory modulation and autonomic processes. In the present study, we examined OXT expression in the hypothalamo-spinal pathway, as well as the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system, which includes the magnocellular neurosecretory cells in the PVN and the supraoptic nucleus (SON), after s.c. injection of saline or formalin into the hindpaws of transgenic rats that express the OXT and monomeric red fluorescent protein 1 (mRFP1) fusion gene. (i) The numbers of OXT-mRFP1 neurones that expressed Fos-like immunoreactivity (-IR) and OXT-mRFP1 intensity were increased significantly in the magnocellular/parvocellular PVN and SON after s.c. injection of formalin. (ii) OXT-mRFP1 neurones in the anterior parvocellular PVN, which may project to the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, were activated by s.c. injection of formalin, as indicated by a significant increases of Fos-IR and mRFP1 intensity intensity. (iii) Formalin injection caused a significant transient increase in plasma OXT. (iv) OXT, mRFP1 and corticotrophin-releasing hormone mRNAs in the PVN were significantly increased after s.c. injection of formalin. (v) An intrathecal injection of OXT-saporin induced hypersensitivity in conscious rats. Taken together, these results suggest that the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial/-spinal OXTergic pathways may be involved in acute nociceptive responses in rats.

Abstract
Background: On the basis of our recent findings of oncogenic KRAS-induced interleukin-8 (IL-8) overexpression in non-small cell lung cancer, we assessed the clinicopathological and prognostic significances of IL-8 expression and its relationship to KRAS mutations in lung adenocarcinomas. Methods: IL-8 expression was examined by quantitative RT–PCR using 136 of surgical specimens from lung adenocarcinoma patients. The association between IL-8 expression, clinicopathological features, KRAS or EGFR mutation status and survival was analysed. Results: IL-8 was highly expressed in tumours from elderly patients or smokers and in tumours with pleural involvement or vascular invasion. In a non-smokers' subgroup, IL-8 level positively correlated with age. IL-8 was highly expressed in tumours with KRAS mutations compared with those with EGFR mutations or wild-type EGFR/KRAS. Lung adenocarcinoma patients with high IL-8 showed significantly shorter disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) than those with low IL8. DFS and OS were significantly shorter in the patients with mutant KRAS/high IL-8 than in those with wild-type KRAS/low IL-8. Cox regression analyses demonstrated that elevated IL-8 expression correlated with unfavourable prognosis. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that IL-8 expression is associated with certain clinicopathological features including age and is a potent prognostic marker in lung adenocarcinoma, especially in oncogenic KRAS-driven adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
We survey our recent theoretical studies on the generation and detection of coherent radial breathing mode (RBM) phonons in single-walled carbon nanotubes and coherent radial breathing like mode (RBLM) phonons in graphene nanoribbons. We present a microscopic theory for the electronic states, phonon modes, optical matrix elements and electron-phonon interaction matrix elements that allows us to calculate the coherent phonon spectrum. An extended tight-binding (ETB) model has been used for the electronic structure and a valence force field (VFF) model has been used for the phonon modes. The coherent phonon amplitudes satisfy a driven oscillator equation with the driving term depending on the photoexcited carrier density. We discuss the dependence of the coherent phonon spectrum on the nanotube chirality and type, and also on the graphene nanoribbon mod number and class (armchair versus zigzag). We compare these results with a simpler effective mass theory where reasonable agreement with the main features of the coherent phonon spectrum is found. In particular, the effective mass theory helps us to understand the initial phase of the coherent phonon oscillations for a given nanotube chirality and type. We compare these results to two different experiments for nanotubes: (i) micelle suspended tubes and (ii) aligned nanotube films. In the case of graphene nanoribbons, there are no experimental observations to date. We also discuss, based on the evaluation of the electron-phonon interaction matrix elements, the initial phase of the coherent phonon amplitude and its dependence on the chirality and type. Finally, we discuss previously unpublished results for coherent phonon amplitudes in zigzag nanoribbons obtained using an effective mass theory.

Abstract
Phonon self-energy corrections have mostly been studied theoretically and experimentally for phonon modes with zone-center (q=0) wave vectors. Here, gate-modulated Raman scattering is used to study phonons of a single layer of graphene originating from a double-resonant Raman process with q≠0. The observed phonon renormalization effects are different from what is observed for the zone-center q=0 case. To explain our experimental findings, we explored the phonon self-energy for the phonons with nonzero wave vectors (q≠0) in single-layer graphene in which the frequencies and decay widths are expected to behave oppositely to the behavior observed in the corresponding zone-center q=0 processes. Within this framework, we resolve the identification of the phonon modes contributing to the G(⋆) Raman feature at 2450 cm(-1) to include the iTO+LA combination modes with q≠0 and also the 2iTO overtone modes with q=0, showing both to be associated with wave vectors near the high symmetry point K in the Brillouin zone.

Abstract
The G' (or 2D) Raman band of AB stacked bilayer graphene comes from a double resonance Raman (DRR) process and is composed of four peaks (P(11), P(12), P(21), and P(22)). In this work, the integrated areas (IA) of these four peaks are analyzed as a function of the laser power for different laser lines. We show that the dependence of the IA of each peak on temperature is different for each distinct laser excitation energy. This special dependence is explained in terms of the electron-phonon coupling and the relaxation of the photon-excited electron. In this DRR process, the electron is scattered by an iTO phonon from a K to an inequivalent K' point of the Brillouin zone. Here, we show that this electron relaxes while in the conduction band before being scattered by an iTO phonon due to the short relaxation time of the excited electron, and the carrier relaxation occurs predominantly by emitting a low-energy acoustic phonon. The different combinations of relaxation processes determine the relative intensities of the four peaks that give rise to the G' band. Some peaks show an increase of their IA at the expense of others, thereby making the IA of the peaks both different from each other and dependent on laser excitation energy and on power level. Also, we report that the IA of the G' mode excited at 532 nm, shows a resonance regime involving ZO' phonons (related to the interlayer breathing mode in bilayer graphene systems) in which a saturation of what we call the P(12) process occurs. This effect gives important information about the electron and phonon dynamics and needs to be taken into account for certain applications of bilayer graphene in the field of nanotechnology.

Abstract
Patients who have received subtotal esophagectomy for thoracic esophageal cancer must be closely monitored for second primary malignancies. The purpose of this study is to review and assess patients who developed a second primary esophageal cancer in the residual cervical esophagus. Between 1996 and 2010, 10 patients were diagnosed in our hospital with esophageal squamous cell cancer in the residual cervical esophagus after undergoing thoracic esophagectomy and were treated with endoscopic or surgical resection. Data from these patients were reviewed retrospectively. Seven of the 10 patients (70%) had multiple primary carcinoma lesions at the time of their esophagectomy. A second primary cancer in the residual cervical esophagus was detected in eight patients during follow-up endoscopic examinations while the patients were still asymptomatic. Seven of the patients underwent endoscopic resection for a superficial cancer. None of those patients experienced any complications, and all are currently alive and cancer-free. The remaining three patients underwent resection of the cervical esophagus with regional lymph node dissection. Two of those patients experienced severe complications; one subsequently died (hospital death) from pneumonia, 12 months after surgery, while the other died from recurrence of his cancer. The third patient is alive and cancer-free. Early detection of a second primary malignancy in the residual cervical esophagus followed by endoscopic resection is the best treatment strategy for patients who previously received subtotal esophagectomy for thoracic esophageal cancer. Surgical resection puts patients at high risk of mortality or morbidity.

Abstract
We present experimental measurements of the electronic contribution to the Raman spectra of individual metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (MSWNTs). Photoexcited carriers are inelastically scattered by a continuum of low-energy electron-hole pairs created across the graphenelike linear electronic subbands of the MSWNTs. The optical resonances in MSWNTs give rise to well-defined electronic Raman peaks. This resonant electronic Raman scattering is a unique feature of the electronic structure of these one-dimensional quasimetals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical treatment of deep-seated tumors such as supratentorial intraventricular and thalamic-pineal-tectal region tumors carries a risk of postoperative deficits due to possible damage to deep cerebral veins including the internal cerebral vein. It is often difficult to identify whether the vessel encountered during surgery needs to be preserved or not through the small operative field. Therefore, preoperative evaluation of deep venous structures is important. We evaluated the usefulness of 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (3 T MRI) for this purpose. METHODS First, the ability to detect deep venous structures was compared with both 3-dimensional computed tomographical angiography (3D-CTA) and 3 T MRI in patients without any damage to deep venous structures. Images of 7 consecutive patients suffering from insulo-opercular gliomas who underwent both imaging modes for the identification of lateral striate arteries were reconstructed for evaluation of the deep cerebral veins. Subsequently, surgery for tumors at the supratentorial intraventricular and thalamic-pineal-tectal regions was prospectively performed with preoperative evaluation of deep venous system only using 3 T MRI. RESULTS Information on the deep venous systems acquired by 3 T MRI was as useful as that acquired by 3D-CTA. Until today, we have treated 8 cases of supratentorial intraventricular and thalamic-pineal-tectal region tumors with preoperative evaluation of the deep venous system using 3 T MRI without any morbidity. CONCLUSION Information on the deep venous system obtained with 3 T MRI aids the surgery of supratentorial intraventricular and thalamic-pineal-tectal region tumors. As the required sequences of 3 T MRI are same as those necessary for the neuronavigation system, and 3 T MRI can be achieved without the use of iodine-based contrast agents, 3 T MRI can be an alternative for preoperative evaluation of the deep venous systems.

Abstract
Bordetella pertussis is the aetiologic agent of whooping cough, a common cause of severe respiratory illness in children and prolonged mild cough in adults. To understand some of the reasons for differences in clinical symptoms between adults and children, we measured B. pertussis DNA loads in nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) from 19 adults and 40 children (including 14 infants) by quantitative IS481 real-time PCR. All cases had been pre-diagnosed with the B. pertussis-specific loop-mediated isothermal amplification method. The mean PCR threshold cycles for adult and child NPS were 34.9 and 27.1, respectively, indicating a significantly lower B. pertussis DNA load in adults than in children (p <0.001). Moreover, adults had very low DNA loads during both early and later stages of the disease. When corresponding bacterial loads in NPS were calculated for B. pertussis Tohama cells using a standard curve, the mean number of bacterial cells taken with a rayon-tipped swab from an adult, older child and infant was estimated to be 320 (95% CI 120-910), 2.1 × 10⁴(95% CI 5.3 × 10³ to 8.3 × 10⁴) and 1.1 × 10⁶ cells (95% CI 1.2 × 10⁵ to 8.9 × 10⁶), respectively. This indicates that the B. pertussis load in NPS is closely correlated with patient age. Our observations suggest that adult pertussis is characterized by a lower bacterial load in the nasopharynx, resulting in milder symptoms and negative cultures.

Abstract
AIM To compare the performance of a new chromogenic agar medium CHROMagar ESBL (KC-ESBL) to chromID ESBL (SB-ESBL) for the detection and presumptive identification of extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae directly from clinical specimens. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 256 specimens were screened for ESBL producers. Also, the genotypes of the ESBLs and plasmid-mediated AmpC ß-lactamases (pAmpCBLs) were characterized by PCR and sequencing. Among the 256 specimens, 17 (6.6%) ESBL producers were isolated on both media. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value were higher for KC-ESBL (100, 93.3, 51.5 and 100%, respectively) than for SB-ESBL (88.2, 92.9, 46.9 and 99.1%, respectively) (P = 0.72). Enterobacteriaceae harbouring pAmpCBL genes as well as chromosomal cephalosporinase- and penicillinase-hyperproducing Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa accounted for the false-positive results. CONCLUSION KC-ESBL can detect ESBL producers from clinical specimens with good selectivity and rapid presumptive identification by means of colony colour at 24 h. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first study that has evaluated the performance of KC-ESBL that enables the detection and presumptive identification of ESBL producers from clinical specimens.

AbstractWe analyze the dependence of the second-order G'-band profile in terms of their (n,m) indices by measuring the resonance Raman spectra of several semiconducting and metalic isolated single wal carbon nanotubes. We show that this profile is very sensitive to the electronic structure, thus making it possible to get structural (n,m) information and to probe the splitting of the van Hove singularities in the electronic density of states due to the trigona warping effect.

ABSTRACTTime-resolved excitation and relaxation processes of the impact excitation emission (EL) at 1.54μm of Er3+ ions doped in InP were investigated in the temperature range from 77K to 330K. The decay process was almost exponential in all the measured temperature range and showed little thermal quenching. The decay time of 2ms at 77K decreased only to tms at 330K. This result contrasted with the large thermal quenching and nonexponential characteristics of the photoluminescence (PL) time decay at higher temperatures, suggesting different Er3+ centers excited between EL and PL. A two-emission-center model is proposed and the different behaviors of thermal quenching and time decay between EL and PL emissions are consistently explained.

Abstract
AbstractPhotoluminescence characteristics of porous silicon layers (PSLs) doped with Er or Yb ions are studied. 10μm thick PSLs with a luminescence centered at ∼ 0.8μm are formed by anodic etching of p-type silicon wafers of several Ω-cm resistivity. Rare-earth ions are electrochemically incorporated into PSLs. The Er3+-related luminescence at 1.54μm as well as the Yb3+-related luminescence at 1.0μm is observed at room temperature after annealing at high temperatures (>900°C). The Er-related luminescence is enhanced after annealing in O2, whereas the Yb3+-related luminescence needs oxygen-free atmosphere (H2) for the optical activation. The luminescence decay time of the rare earth ions as well as the host PSLs is measured and the energy transfer mechanism is discussed.

Abstract
This review discusses advances that have been made in the study of defect-induced double-resonance processes in nanographite, graphene and carbon nanotubes, mostly coming from combining Raman spectroscopic experiments with microscopy studies and from the development of new theoretical models. The disorder-induced peak frequencies and intensities are discussed, with particular emphasis given to how the disorder-induced features evolve with increasing amounts of disorder. We address here two systems, ion-bombarded graphene and nanographite, where disorder is represented by point defects and boundaries, respectively. Raman spectroscopy is used to study the 'atomic structure' of the defect, making it possible, for example, to distinguish between zigzag and armchair edges, based on selection rules of phonon scattering. Finally, a different concept is discussed, involving the effect that defects have on the lineshape of Raman-allowed peaks, owing to local electron and phonon energy renormalization. Such effects can be observed by near-field optical measurements on the G' feature for doped single-walled carbon nanotubes.
