Trauma and the pyoderma gangrenosum of inflammatory bowel disease

In five patients with inflammatory bowel disease (three with ulcerative colitis, two with Crohn's disease), pyoderma gangrenosum developed on a lower extremity at the site of trauma. In these subjects, the pyoderma was not clearly correlated with disease activity.

Psychiatric consultation in a community agency serving the elderly

Although elderly people have a higher incidence of mental disorders than other age groups, few programs have been developed to meet their mental health needs. The author describes the work of, and his role as consultant to, the Council for Jewish Elderly in Chicago, which provides comprehensive services and care for the elderly focused on prevention of psychiatric illness. As consultant to the program, the author made clinical evaluations of selected clients, worked with individual physicians and agencies to coordinate psychiatric services, conducted educational activities for agency staff, provided consultation to the agency administration, and participated in the evaluation of services.

Geriatric psychiatry training for the general psychiatric resident

Although there is a real need in variety of settings for psychiatrists trained in working with older people, a large proportion of psychiatric residency programs do not offer the opportunity for clinical experience with this age group. The author stresses the need to include this subject in the curriculum of residency training programs. He describes the features of one program that offers comprehensive training in this area.
