Abstract
Engineering nanoparticles of reasonable surface poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) length is important for designing efficient drug delivery systems. Eliminating the disturbance by other nanoproperties, such as size, PEG density, etc., is crucial for systemically investigating the impact of surface PEG length on the biological behavior of nanoparticles. In the present study, nanoparticles with different surface PEG length but similar other nanoproperties were prepared by using poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PEG-b-PCL) copolymers of different molecular weights and incorporating different contents of PCL3500 homopolymer. The molecular weight of PEG block in PEG-PCL was between 3400 and 8000 Da, the sizes of nanoparticles were around 100 nm, the terminal PEG density was controlled at 0.4 PEG/nm2 (or the frontal PEG density was controlled at 0.16 PEG/nm2). Using these nanoproperties well-designed nanoparticles, we demonstrated PEG length-dependent changes in the biological behaviors of nanoparticles and exhibited nonmonotonic improvements as the PEG molecular weight increased from 3400 to 8000 Da. Moreover, under the experimental conditions, we found nanoparticles with a surface PEG length of 13.8 nm (MW = 5000 Da) significantly decreased the absorption with serum protein and interaction with macrophages, which led to prolonged blood circulation time, enhanced tumor accumulation and improved antitumor efficacy. The present study will help to establish a relatively precise relationship between surface PEG length and the in vivo behavior of nanoparticles.

Abstract
Nanocarriers with tumor-acidity-activated charge-conversional ability are of particular interest for targeted drug delivery in the field of precision nanomedicine. Nevertheless, the key challenge of this strategy is the slowness of reversing the surface charge at the tumor tissue. As a proof-of-concept, we synthesized the amphiphilic triblock polymer poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(2-carboxyethylacrylate)-block-poly(2-azepaneethylmethacrylate) (PEG-b-PCEA-b-PAEMA) to prepare the cisplatin-loaded nanocarrier UCC-NP/Pt. The PAEMA block at the physiological pH values was hydrophobic, which formed the core of UCC-NP/Pt. In contrast, at the tumor acidity, the tertiary amine groups of PAEMA block rapidly protonated, resulting in the ultrafast charge conversion of UCC-NP/Pt within 10 s. Such ultrafast charge-conversional effect more efficiently enhanced tumor cell internalization of nanocarriers, thus achieving targeted drug delivery, which in turn exhibited superior anticancer efficacy even in the cisplatin-resistant cells. This approach provides new avenues for tumor-acidity-activated targeted drug delivery.

Abstract
Egg yolk is used as a cryoprotectant in semen preservation. However, its composition varies according to the species which may influence its effectiveness during the freeze-thaw process. Therefore, study was conducted to identify the optimum level of pigeon egg yolk (PEY) in Tris citric acid (TCA) extender for freezability and in vivo fertility of buffalo semen. Semen was collected at weekly intervals for a period of three weeks (replicates) from 6 Nili Ravi buffalo bulls (2 ejaculates/bull/replicate) and diluted with TCA extender (50 × 106 motile spermatozoa ml-1) containing 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% PEY or 20% CEY (control) and cryopreserved. Post-thaw sperm quality and extracellular enzymes leakage was assessed after thawing. Sperm motility, plasma membrane integrity, livability and viability was significantly higher in extenders containing 10% and 15% PEY compared to 5% PEY, 20% PEY or 20% CEY (controls). A dose-dependent decrease was recorded in the chromatin damage for the PEY, being lowest for the 15% and 20% PEY which was significantly less compared to controls (20% CEY). The extracellular GOT and LDH leakage was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in extender containing 10% and 15% PEY compared to the controls. Semen collected from 2 bulls, cryopreserved in extenders containing 15% PEY or 20% chicken egg yolk was assessed for fertility after artificial inseminations. A total of 400 buffaloes were inseminated (100 inseminations/extender/bull). The overall fertility rate was significantly higher (P < 0.05) with semen cryopreserved in extender containing 15% PEY (56%) compared to 20% CEY (42%; controls). In conclusion, pigeon egg yolk at 15% offers advantages over 20% chicken egg yolk in terms of in vitro post-thaw semen quality and in vivo fertility of buffalo.

Abstract
The internal structure of nucleons (protons and neutrons) remains one of the greatest outstanding problems in modern nuclear physics. By scattering high-energy electrons off a proton we are able to resolve its fundamental constituents and probe their momenta and positions. Here we investigate the dynamics of quarks and gluons inside nucleons using deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS)-a highly virtual photon scatters off the proton, which subsequently radiates a photon. DVCS interferes with the Bethe-Heitler (BH) process, where the photon is emitted by the electron rather than the proton. We report herein the full determination of the BH-DVCS interference by exploiting the distinct energy dependences of the DVCS and BH amplitudes. In the regime where the scattering is expected to occur off a single quark, measurements show an intriguing sensitivity to gluons, the carriers of the strong interaction.

Abstract
An alternative method of transcutaneous wireless optical energy supply to an artificial cardiac pacemaker has been conceived, thereby negating the possibility of electromagnetic interference. In this research, a comparative analysis is made between two distinct arrays of photovoltaic cells, consisting of two different geometries. Being powered by a 5 mW 750 nm laser, that has a different spot size for each topology; both models are tested by their ability to charge a 150 mAh rechargeable LiPo battery, while being embedded underneath a layer of skin tissue. This system in turn, regulates the power supplied to a low power medical implant (<; 10 mW), in the place of conventional batteries. For a charging period of 60 minutes, results indicate that a pacemaker utilizing this system can sustain operation for nearly 85 hours, without any noticeable side-effects or changes in temperature.

Abstract
Cascades of systemic and intracellular obstacles, including low stability in blood, little tumor accumulation, weak tumor penetration, poor cellular uptake, inefficient endosomal escape and deficient disassembly in the cytoplasm, must be overcome in order to deliver nucleic acid drugs for cancer therapy. Nanocarriers that are sensitive to a variety of physiological stimuli, such as pH, redox status, and cell enzymes, are substantially changing the landscape of nucleic acid drug delivery by helping to overcome cascaded systemic and intracellular barriers. This review discusses nucleic acid-based therapeutics, systemic and intracellular barriers to efficient nucleic acid delivery, and nanocarriers responsive to extracellular and intracellular biological stimuli to overcome individual barriers. In particular, responsive nanocarriers for the cascaded delivery of nucleic acids in vivo are highlighted. Developing novel cascaded nanocarriers that transform their physicochemical properties in response to various stimuli in a timely and spatially controlled manner for nucleic acid drug delivery holds great potential for translating the promise of nucleic acid drugs and achieving clinically successful cancer therapy.

Abstract
We present deeply virtual π^{0} electroproduction cross-section measurements at x_{B}=0.36 and three different Q^{2} values ranging from 1.5 to 2 GeV^{2}, obtained from Jefferson Lab Hall A experiment E07-007. The Rosenbluth technique is used to separate the longitudinal and transverse responses. Results demonstrate that the cross section is dominated by its transverse component and, thus, is far from the asymptotic limit predicted by perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Nonetheless, an indication of a nonzero longitudinal contribution is provided by the measured interference term σ_{LT}. Results are compared with several models based on the leading-twist approach of generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In particular, a fair agreement is obtained with models in which the scattering amplitude includes convolution terms of chiral-odd (transversity) GPDs of the nucleon with the twist-3 pion distribution amplitude. This experiment, together with previous extensive unseparated measurements, provides strong support to the exciting idea that transversity GPDs can be accessed via neutral pion electroproduction in the high-Q^{2} regime.

Abstract
In this paper, we study the fractional-order biological population models (FBPMs) with Malthusian, Verhulst, and porous media laws. The fractional derivative is defined in Caputo sense. The optimal homotopy asymptotic method (OHAM) for partial differential equations (PDEs) is extended and successfully implemented to solve FBPMs. Third-order approximate solutions are obtained and compared with the exact solutions. The numerical results unveil that the proposed extension in the OHAM for fractional-order differential problems is very effective and simple in computation. The results reveal the effectiveness with high accuracy and extremely efficient to handle most complicated biological population models.

Abstract
Aim of the present study was to characterise and evaluate probiotic potential of lactobacilli isolated from indigenous poultry. Lactobacilli were isolated from poultry droppings and identified by genus specific polymerase chain reaction and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Isolates were characterised in vitro by their ability to tolerate low pH and bile salts, phytase activity, antimicrobial activity, antibiotic susceptibility profile, and autoaggregation and coaggregation with poultry gut pathogens. In vivo evaluation of selected isolates was done by their effect on the body weight gain and immune response of broiler chicks. Total of 90, one-day old chicks, were randomly divided in 9 groups and given selected lactobacilli alone and in combinations (108 cfu/bird, daily) from day 7 to day 35. Body weight gain and humoral immune response to New Castle Disease Virus (NDV) vaccine were determined weekly. Three lactobacilli isolates (SMP52, SMP64 and SMP70) were selected as potentially probiotic bacteria on the basis of in vitro characterisation and identified as Lactobacillus crispatus, Lactobacillus casei and L. crispatus, respectively. Chicks supplemented with 'SMP52', 'SMP64', 'SMP70' and 'SMP64+SMP70' and a commercial probiotic product (Protexin) showed significantly higher mean weight gain per bird (1,584±35.2, 1,629±30.6, 1,668±34.7, 1,619±29.5 and 1,576±31.7 g/bird, respectively) as compared to negative control group (1,394±26.7 g/bird), on day 35. SMP 70 also showed significantly higher geometric mean titre against NDV vaccine at day 21 as compared to negative control. It is concluded that L. crispatus SMP52, L. casei SMP64 and L. crispatus SMP70 are potential probiotic candidates which alone or in different combinations may increase body weight of broilers.

Abstract
Palmaris longus, phylogenetically a retrogressive muscle, exhibits significant anatomical variations compared to other muscles of the upper extremity. It is of great surgical importance because, it is the first option tendon for graft procedures in various cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgeries. It has also been widely used in various tendon transfer procedures in treating facial paralysis, ptosis correction, lip augmentation and digital pulley reconstruction. We report a rare variant pattern of Palmaris longus with duplicated tendons and with multiple insertions to thenar and hypothenar muscles, fasciae and the flexor retinaculum along with its normal continuation as palmar aponeurosis. Variations in its insertions not only contribute, but also augment the various pathological processes such as Dupuytren's contracture, Carpal tunnel and Guyon's syndromes. So it is of utmost importance for surgeons, physicians and radiologists, to be aware of these variations, well in advance.

Abstract
We studied simultaneously the (4)He(e,e'p), (4)He(e,e'pp), and (4)He(e,e'pn) reactions at Q(2)=2(GeV/c)(2) and x(B)>1, for an (e,e'p) missing-momentum range of 400 to 830 MeV/c. The knocked-out proton was detected in coincidence with a proton or neutron recoiling almost back to back to the missing momentum, leaving the residual A=2 system at low excitation energy. These data were used to identify two-nucleon short-range correlated pairs and to deduce their isospin structure as a function of missing momentum, in a region where the nucleon-nucleon (NN) force is expected to change from predominantly tensor to repulsive. The abundance of neutron-proton pairs is reduced as the nucleon momentum increases beyond ∼500 MeV/c. The extracted fraction of proton-proton pairs is small and almost independent of the missing momentum. Our data are compared with calculations of two-nucleon momentum distributions in (4)He and discussed in the context of probing the elusive repulsive component of the NN force.

Abstract
Abstractlntussusception is rare in adults. It accounts for 5 to 10% of all intussusceptions and 1 % of all bowel obstructions. It has a definite lead point in the form of either a lesion in the bowel wall or intraluminal, which alters the normal peristalsis and may lead to an invagination. It may present as an acute, intermittent or chronic problem and thus making its pre-operative diagnosis difficult. The symptoms are usually those of bowel obstructions which include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain with or without melena and it depends on the causative lesions. Ultrasound and CT scans are the two most important radiological methods used in the diagnosis of intussusceptions. Surgical resection of the intussuscepted mass without reduction and end to end anastomosis is the preferred line of treatment in adults, because most of the enteric intussusceptions are associated with malignancy. In this report, we present a case of jejuno - jejunal intussusception in a dissection hall cadaver and analyze its incidence, etio-pathogenesis, classification, symptomatology, importance of imaging studies in the diagnosis and the therapeutic interventions in detail.

Abstract
This investigation studied the effects of intravaginal administration of a mixture of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on the incidence of purulent vaginal discharges (PVD), plasma haptoglobin concentrations, and milk production in dairy cows. A total of 82 pregnant primiparous and multiparous Holstein dairy cows were used in this study. Half of the cows received intravaginally 1mL of LAB at 10(10)-10(12)cfu/mL and the other half 1mL of reconstituted skim milk (i.e., carrier) (controls). Administration of LAB was conducted once per wk during 2 and 1wk before the expected day of calving and at 1, 2, 3, and 4wk postpartum. Data demonstrated that intravaginal administration of LAB decreased the occurrence of PVD at 3wk postpartum (P<0.05). Concentrations of plasma haptoglobin, an acute phase protein often associated with uterine infections, was lower in cows treated with the LAB mixture at 2wk (P<0.001) and 3wk (P<0.05) postpartum. Treatment with LAB did not improve overall pregnancy rate, but the treated multiparous cows produced more milk than their control counterparts (P<0.05), whereas no difference was observed in primiparous cows regarding milk yield (P>0.05). Overall, this is the first study demonstrating that intravaginal LAB administration lowers the incidence of PVD and enhances milk production in dairy cows. Further research is warranted to evaluate the effects of LAB on reproductive performance in a larger cohort of cows.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke, aneurysms and arterio-venous malformations are very much prevalent in our country. Circle of Willis, as an anastomotic polygon at the base of the brain forms an important collateral network to maintain adequate cerebral perfusion. Changes in the normal morphology of the circle may condition the appearance and severity of symptoms of cerebrovascular disorders, such as aneurysms, infarctions and other vascular anomalies. A possible link between abnormalities of the circle of Willis and the mentally ill patients has been observed. AIM AND OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study is to have an intimate knowledge of the variations in the cerebral arterial circle and to clarify the clinical importance of these variations in certain forms of cerebrovascular diseases. So an attempt was made to analyse the anatomical variations of the circle in a random population. MATERIAL AND METHODS The work was based on fifty adult brains from persons died of diverse causes. The materials were obtained during routine autopsy studies. The base of the brain including the brain stem with intact arterial circle was preserved in 10% formalin for 10 days. The circle of Willis and its major branches were carefully dissected under water using a magnifying lens. The variations were recorded and photographed. RESULTS Majority of the circles (52%) showed anomalies. Hypoplasia was the most frequent anomaly and was found in 24% of the brains. Accessory vessels in the form of duplications/triplications of anterior communicating artery were seen in 12% of the circles. The embryonic origin of the posterior cerebral artery from the internal carotid persisted in 10% of the circles. An incomplete circle due to the absence of one or other posterior communicating artery was found in 6% of the specimens.Variations are more frequent in posterior half of the circle. CONCLUSION The anatomical variations of the circle of Willis were probably genetically determined, develop in early embryonic stage and persist in post natal life. The amplitude of neck movements, racial, environmental and hemodynamic factors may also modify these variations. These anomalies may alter the occurrence, severity of symptoms, treatment options and recovery from certain cerebrovascular disorders viz., stroke and aneurysms. A detailed knowledge of the vascular variants is useful to surgeons in planning their shunt operations, choice of the patients and also keeps away inadvertent vascular traumas during surgeries.

Abstract
The inhibition of the α-glucosidase enzyme plays an important role in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. We have established a highly sensitive, fast, and convenient CE method for the characterization of the enzyme and inhibition studies of α-glucosidase inhibitors. The separation conditions were optimized; the pH value and concentration of the borate-based separation buffer were optimized in order to achieve baseline separation of p-nitrophenyl-α-d-glucopyranoside and p-nitrophenolate. The optimized method using 25 mM tetraborate buffer, pH 9.5, was evaluated in terms of repeatability, LOD, LOQ, and linearity. The LOD and LOQ were 0.32 and 1.32 μM for p-nitrophenyl-α-D-glucopyranoside and 0.83 and 3.42 μM for p-nitrophenolate, respectively. The value of the Michaelis-Menten constant (K(m)) determined for the enzyme is 0.61 mM, which is in good agreement with the reported data. The RSDs (n = 6) for the migration time was 0.67 and 1.83% for substrate and product, respectively. In the newly established CE method, the separation of the reaction analytes was completed in <4 min. The developed CE method is rapid and simple for measuring enzyme kinetics and for assaying inhibitors.

Abstract
In the current study, capillary electrophoresis (CE)-based enzyme assay for characterization and inhibition study of bovine carbonic anhydrase II (bCA II) was developed. The developed method is the first CE assay for carbonic anhydrase (CA). The method was optimized in order to get short analysis time, minimal sample volume consumption, and high resolution of substrate and product. The CE conditions were optimized as follows: fused-silica capillary (30 cm effective length×75 μm i.d.), pressure injection for 5s, 20mM sodium borate buffer (pH 9.0), constant voltage of 15 kV, constant capillary temperature of 25 °C, and detection at 260 nm. For precise measurements, uridine was used as an internal standard during optimization of the CE methods. The limits of detection and quantification for p-nitrophenyl acetate (p-NPA) were 3.01 and 9.12 μM, respectively, whereas for p-nitrophenolate they were 2.05 and 6.22 μM, respectively. The performance of the developed method was confirmed by determination of kinetic parameters (i.e., K(m) and V(max) of bCA for p-NPA); the inhibition constant (K(i)) was determined for furosemide, a standard inhibitor of CA. The new method proved to be fast and efficient, and it can be used for the investigation of inhibitors of all isoforms of CAs.

Abstract
Shoulder surgery has emerged from being a marginalised sub-speciality to being an area of much research and advancement within the last seventy years. This has been despite the complexity of the joint, and success majorly rests on parallel development of biomedical technology. This article looks at the past and present of shoulder surgery and discusses future directions in the speciality.

Abstract
AIM The benefits of using multiple gauge needles during EUS-FNA of solid and lymph node lesions are unknown. The purpose of our study was to find out the significance of adding a large caliber needle if small caliber needle fail to achieve diagnostic specimen after few passes. METHODS It was a retrospective review of all EUS-FNA procedures performed by one of the two experienced endosonographers. A large (22 or 19 gauge) needle was added if on-site cytologic analysis did not reveal adequate specimen after ≥2 passes. The adequacy of the specimen was determined by the Cytopathologist, and categorized as either satisfactory for analysis or unsatisfactory. The cytologic findings were reported as either benign or malignant. RESULTS Out of total 1200 EUS cases, FNA was performed in 306 cases with different solid and lymph node lesions. Multiple gauge needles were used in 188/306 (39%) cases. There was no statistically significant difference in the diagnostic yield and definitive diagnosis between multiple and single gauge needle groups. The finding was unchanged after controlling the number of needle passes. No complications were noted. CONCLUSION The addition of a large caliber needle achieved at least the same (or even slightly higher diagnostic yield), and can be a method of rescue in certain cases.

Abstract
Microsporidia are opportunistic pathogens that usually cause a limited disease in the gastrointestinal tract. Occasionally, they can cause disseminated disease. In solid organ transplant recipients, disseminated disease has been reported only rarely. We describe a 68-year-old woman who presented with fever, cough, and acute kidney injury 6 months after kidney transplantation. Dissemination was confirmed by identification of microsporidial spores in urine and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Polymerase chain reaction analysis identified the species as Encephalitozoon cuniculi.
