Abstract
UNLABELLED The significance of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) score for AD/HD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) screening was assessed in Japanese epileptic children. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Sixty-eight epileptic children were enrolled in this study. Parents were asked to fill out both the SDQ and AD/HD-rating scale (AD/HD-RS) simultaneously. RESULTS The SDQ subscale of hyperactivity showed the highest score. The AD/HD-RS showed higher scores for both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. Twenty-two (32.4%) of these subjects were diagnosed as having AD/HD. The SDQ subscale for hyperactivity showed 86.4% sensitivity and 95% specificity, respectively, for detection of AD/HD. All SDQ subscales correlated significantly with inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity scores of the AD/HD-RS. CONCLUSIONS The SDQ is a good screening tool which can contribute to the detection of AD/HD, not only of the hyperactive/impulsive but also the inattentive subtype. Furthermore, the SDQ can elucidate more complicated behavioral problems than the core symptoms of AD/HD that are not noticed in the epilepsy clinic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During the A/H1N1 pandemic, patients suffered from impaired consciousness. They were suspected of or diagnosed as having influenza-associated encephalopathy (IAE) in an emergency situation. Their symptoms resembled those of a recently described 'unique clinical group', which were reported to have a favorable prognosis. METHODS We retrospectively examined 46 patients and divided them into two groups. Group IC contained the 26 patients with persisting impaired consciousness. The remainder of the patients were categorized into group R, consisting of patients with only neurological symptoms without impaired consciousness. RESULTS Male predominance (22 male/four female) was noted in group IC. Patient age ranged from 5 to 12 years old (mean ± SD, 7.7 ± 2.3 years). Impaired consciousness such as delirious behavior or mild reduction of consciousness lasted continuously or intermittently from 5 min to 2.5 days. On electroencephalogram, semi-rhythmic high-voltage slow waves in the parieto-occipital regions and diffuse high-voltage slow waves were observed in eight and in two patients, respectively. In group R, there was no gender predominance. Patient age ranged from 1 to 9 years old (mean ± SD, 4.1 ± 2.5 years). All group R patients were clinically diagnosed with febrile seizure. CONCLUSIONS Some of the characteristics in group IC resembled those of the unique clinical group, and are part of a continuous clinical spectrum. Some patients may have favorable outcome without specific treatment.

Abstract
Neutropenia can often be corrected by treatment with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) and off-label use of commercial human G-CSF (HuG-CSF) is a commonly used treatment for neutropenic animals. However, long-term HuG-CSF treatment can be associated with adverse effects, including neutropenia. Here, feline (Fe) G-CSF was produced in Pichia pastoris, pegylated (Peg) FeG-CSF and tested in cats. A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of PegFeG-CSF compared to FeG-CSF or HuG-CSF in FIV-infected (n=14), FIV-uninfected healthy cats (n=19), and in HuG-CSF-induced neutropenic cats (n=4). Daily FeG-CSF doses induced higher neutrophil production than HuG-CSF after the second week of treatment (P ⩽ 0.002). Weekly doses of PegFeG-CSF induced higher neutrophil counts and showed greater sustained activity than weekly doses of FeG-CSF. PegFeG-CSF provided the most therapeutic and sustainable neutrophil production (P<0.001) in both FIV-uninfected and FIV-infected cats, without the development of neutralizing antibodies. Conversely, all HuG-CSF-treated cats developed neutralizing antibodies, suggesting cross-reactive antibodies to endogenous G-CSF in a majority of the cases with severe neutropenia. Strikingly, when PegFeG-CSF was used to rescue cats with HuG-CSF-induced neutropenia, clinically normal neutrophil numbers returned. Thus, PegFeG-CSF appears to be a superior treatment for neutropenia in feline patients.

Abstract
Mutations in PRRT2 genes have been identified as a major cause of benign infantile epilepsy and/or paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia. We explored mutations in PRRT2 in Japanese patients with BIE as well as its related conditions including convulsion with mild gastroenteritis and benign early infantile epilepsy. We explored PRRT2 mutations in Japanese children who had had unprovoked infantile seizures or convulsion with mild gastroenteritis. The probands included 16 children with benign infantile epilepsy, 6 children with convulsions with mild gastroenteritis, and 2 siblings with benign early infantile epilepsy. In addition, we recruited samples from family members when PRRT2 mutation was identified in the proband. Statistical analyses were performed to identify differences in probands with benign infantile epilepsy according to the presence or absence of PRRT2 mutation. Among a total of 24 probands, PRRT2 mutations was identified only in 6 probands with benign infantile epilepsy. A common insertion mutation, c.649_650insC, was found in 5 families and a novel missense mutation, c.981C>G (I327M), in one. The family history of paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia was more common in probands with PRRT2 mutations than in those without mutations. Our study revealed that PRRT2 mutations are common in Japanese patients with benign infantile epilepsy, especially in patients with a family history of paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia.

Abstract
Stomach contents of 437 age-0 year Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis (20·3-59·4 cm fork length, L(F)) caught in the Tsushima Current and the Kuroshio regions around Japan were examined to investigate their ontogenetic diet shift. Prey compositions were diverse and different between regions. Although the seasonal growth patterns were different between regions, ontogenetic diet shifts shared a common pattern. In the Tsushima Current region (Sea of Japan), small T. orientalis (20-25 cm L(F)) preyed upon small squid (juvenile Enoploteuthis chunii), and larger ones (25-35 cm L(F)) gradually shifted their diet to mesopelagic fish (Maurolicus japonicus). In the Kuroshio region (Pacific Ocean), small T. orientalis (20-25 cm L(F)) preyed upon small zooplankton (mostly crustacean larvae), and larger ones (25-40 cm L(F)) shifted to epipelagic fishes (Etrumeus teres, Sardinops melanostictus and Engraulis japonicus). The observed data suggest that T. orientalis switch to a diet more based on fish prey items, which have more body mass and greater swimming ability than small squid and zooplankton, after they reach a L(F) of 25 cm.

Abstract
The age and growth of North Pacific albacore Thunnus alalunga were investigated using obliquely sectioned sagittal otoliths from samples of 126 females and 148 males. Otolith edge analysis indicated that the identified annulus in a sagittal otolith is primarily formed during the period from September to February. The assessments of the fish age at first annulus formation indicated that the first annulus represents an age of <1 year. This study presents an age estimate (0·75 years) for the formation of the first annulus. The oldest fish ages observed in this study were 10 years for females and 14 years for males. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters of females estimated were L(∞) = 103·5 cm in fork length (L(F) ), K = 0·340 year(-1) and t(0) = -0·53 years, and the parameters of males were L(∞) = 114·0 cm, K = 0·253 year(-1) and t(0) = -1·01 years. Sexual size dimorphism between males and females seemed to occur after reaching sexual maturity. The coefficients of the power function for expressing the L(F) -mass relationship obtained from sex-pooled data were a = 2·964 × 10(-5) and b = 2·928.

Abstract
Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD; MIM#312080) is a rare X-linked leukodystrophy presenting with motor developmental delay associated with spasticity and nystagmus. PMD is mainly caused by abnormalities in the proteolipid protein 1 gene (PLP1), most frequently due to duplications of chromosomal segments including PLP1. In this study, a 9-year-old male patient manifesting severe developmental delay and spasticity was analyzed for PLP1 alteration, and triplication of PLP1 was identified. Further examination revealed an underlying genomic organization, duplication-inverted triplication-duplication (DUP-TRP/INV-DUP), in which a triplicated segment was nested between 2 junctions. One of the 2 junctions was caused by inverted homologous regions, and the other was caused by non-homologous end-joining. PMD patients with PLP1 duplications usually show milder-classical forms of the disease compared with patients with PLP1 missense mutations manifesting severe connatal forms. The present patient showed severe phenotypic features that represent an intermediate form of PMD between classical and connatal forms. This is the first report of a patient with PLP1 triplication caused by a DUP-TRP/INV-DUP structure. This study adds additional evidence about the consequences of PLP1 triplication.

Abstract
Topiramate (TPM) has been shown to be effective for epileptic spasms (ES) in children, but there is little clinical experience with TPM use in Japan. We report three tuberous sclerosis (TS) patients with relapsed ES, who became spasm-free while receiving TPM treatment. All three patients were treated with a starting dose of 0.5 mg/kg/day. The dosage was increased by 0.5 mg/kg/day every 2 weeks. Although the dose of TPM and the period until the relapsed ES subsided differed among these patients, spasm frequency was clearly reduced by a 1 mg/kg/day dose of TPM. Therefore, efficacy against relapsed ES appeared within one month in all three patients. All three became spasm-free, and there have been no ES relapses for more than 5 months to date. In case 2, seizures were well controlled by TPM alone. Cases 2 and 3 were able to discontinue zonisamide treatment. No adverse effects occurred in any of these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Primary care physicians in Japan are often unwilling to vaccinate children with neurological disorders. The aim of the present study was to determine the state of vaccination in children who are severely handicapped and/or have convulsive disorders, in order to increase the vaccination rate in this patient population. METHODS Six hundred and eighty pediatricians belonging to Osaka Shonika Ikai were asked to answer a questionnaire, and 359 doctors responded. RESULTS Two hundred and thirty-four doctors consulted for febrile seizures (Fs), 190 for epilepsy and 145 for conditions affecting severely handicapped children, responded that they refused to vaccinate. The reasons for reluctance to vaccinate these children were short interval since the last seizure, including febrile (226 doctors) and epileptic (121 doctors) seizures. It was especially likely that a child with a past history of status epilepticus would be refused vaccination. Primary care doctors are very cautious about the indications for vaccination, especially the inoculation of live vaccines, because they often induce post-vaccination fever-associated convulsions. Intractable daily epileptic seizures was the most common reason for refusal to vaccinate severely handicapped children. Examples of inadequate decision-making as regards the indications for vaccination were: "need more than 6 months observation since last seizure whether Fs or epileptic", "need EEG examination for Fs", "contraindication because of low bodyweight and/or chronic wheezing in severely handicapped children". CONCLUSIONS There is a need to provide correct information about the adverse effects of vaccination and for greater cooperation between primary care doctors and pediatric neurologists.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Glucocorticosteroids (GCS) are used to treat bronchial asthma, but are not uniformly effective, especially in severe asthma. IL-13 is a T helper type 2 cytokine implicated in the pathogenesis of asthma, and IL-13 induces mucus production and goblet cell hyperplasia in airway epithelial cells. The effect of GCS on IL-13-induced mucin production is not well characterized. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dexamethasone (Dex), a potent synthetic GCS, on IL-13-induced MUC5AC mucin expression and goblet cell proliferation in differentiated normal human bronchial epithelial cells (NHBECs). METHODS NHBECs were cultured for 14 days at an air-liquid interface with IL-13, with or without Dex. MUC5AC protein secretion and mRNA expression was determined using ELISA and quantitative real-time PCR. IL-8 production was assayed using ELISA. Histochemical analysis was performed using H&E and periodic acid-Schiff stain, and MUC5AC immunostaining. RESULTS Although Dex dose dependently inhibited IL-8 release induced by 5 ng/mL IL-13, Dex 0.001-1 μg/mL had no effect on IL-13 induced MUC5AC protein secretion or mRNA expression. Dex paradoxically increased MUC5AC induced by IL-13 at 0.5 and 1 ng/mL, but had no effect alone or with IL-13 at 0.1 ng/mL. Dex 0.001-1 μg/mL did not inhibit the differentiation of cells into goblet cells and MUC5AC-positive cells induced by IL-13. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Dex at therapeutic concentrations did not inhibit the effects of IL-13 on goblet cell differentiation, characteristic of severe asthma. Paradoxically, MUC5AC production was increased with lower dose IL-13 exposure. This may lead to airway mucus obstruction commonly seen in life-threatening asthma.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the neuropsychological profile of children with cryptogenic localization-related epilepsy (CLRE). Neuropsychological evaluations were performed in 16 CLRE children and 14 children with idiopathic localization-related epilepsy (ILRE) for control within 8 months (average 2.1 months) of initial seizure. The neuropsychological tests used in this study are as follows: the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised, and Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence. Age at onset and test differed significantly between CLRE and ILRE, while the duration between onset and test and the number of seizures before test did not. No marked difference was observed in the neuropsychological profile between 2 groups; however, the discrepancy between VIQ and PIQ was significantly larger in CLRE than in ILRE. This discrepancy was negatively correlated with age at the time of seizure onset (r = -0.615, and p = 0.011). The laterality in discrepancy between VIQ and PIQ was associated with the dominance of interictal discharge. In conclusion, children with lower age at the time of seizure onset were likely to have had a larger discrepancy between VIQ and PIQ.

Abstract
We hypothesized that benign partial epilepsy in infancy (BPEI) and convulsions with gastroenteritis (CwG) may have a similar genetic background, because previous studies indicate that clinical features overlap between BPEI and CwG. As carbamazepine is effective for cessation of clustering seizures in children with BPEI and CwG, some genetic mutations regarding sodium channels may be related to the development of BPEI and/or CwG. We focused on SCN1B encoding the voltage-dependent sodium channel β subunit. We explored SCN1B mutation in 6 children with BPEI and 6 children with CwG. Genomic DNAs were extracted from peripheral blood samples accumulated from the patients and all 5 exons of SCN1B were amplified by standard PCR amplification. There were no SCN1B mutations or pathological single nucleotide polymorphisms in any of the patients, although the phenotypes of our patients were typical for BPEI or CwG. Our study demonstrated that SCN1B may not be related to the occurrence of BPEI or CwG.

Abstract
We report the observation of the decay B- → D(s)((*)+) K- ℓ- ν(ℓ) based on 342 fb(-1) of data collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+ e- storage rings at SLAC. A simultaneous fit to three D(s)(+) decay chains is performed to extract the signal yield from measurements of the squared missing mass in the B meson decay. We observe the decay B- → D(s)((*)+) K- ℓ- ν(ℓ) with a significance greater than 5 standard deviations (including systematic uncertainties) and measure its branching fraction to be B(B- → D(s)((*)+) K- ℓ- ν(ℓ)) = [6.13(-1.03)(+1.04)(stat)±0.43(syst)±0.51(B(D(s)))]×10(-4), where the last error reflects the limited knowledge of the D(s) branching fractions.

Abstract
The factors that contribute to hippocampal damage as a sequela, and its frequency, in patients experiencing febrile status epilepticus, remain unknown. Of the 472 patients with febrile seizures admitted to our hospital between February 2004 and August 2008, 77 had prolonged seizures. Among them, 59 underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A 21-month-old girl showed hippocampal changes after her first episode of febrile status epilepticus. The seizure lasted about 35 min, with eye deviation to the right and ictal rhythmic discharges in the left hemisphere. MRI at 72 h after the seizure revealed high-signal intensities in T(2) and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images of the left hippocampus. Left hippocampal volume diminished over the next several months suggesting the occurrence of neuronal cell death. In no other cases, not even those with longer seizure durations, did significant hippocampal changes develop. The frequency of hippocampal damage was 1.7% in this case series. The involvement of factors other than seizure duration merits further study.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The aim of this study was to identify means of shortening the treatment period for clustering seizures in patients with convulsions with mild gastroenteritis (CwG). METHODS Sixty-two episodes in 61 patients who presented with CwG managed with carbamazepine (CBZ) or Lidocaine (Lidocaine tape (LDT) or intravenous infusion (Lid-iv)) between November 2005 and October 2008 were studied. The subjects were divided into the following groups: 33 episodes treated with CBZ-1 (5mg/kg/day, 1 day), 7 with CBZ-3 (5mg/kg/day, 3 days), 11 with LDT-1 (LDT 2 sheets in 24h), 4 with LDT-2 (LDT 2 sheets in 48 h), and 7 with Lid-iv (1mg/kg/h, continuous infusion). RESULTS One to seven seizures were recognized before starting CBZ or Lidocaine therapy, followed by complete cessation in 57 episodes and one or two recurrent seizures in five. Efficacy rates were 97% for CBZ-1, 100% for CBZ-3, 72.7% for LDT-1, 75% for LID-2, and 100% for Lid-iv. Efficacy was significantly higher in the CBZ groups than the Lidocaine groups (p=0.019), while the differences between treatment periods (CBZ-1 vs. CBZ-3, and Lid-1 vs. Lid-2) did not reach statistical significance (p>0.999). CONCLUSIONS CBZ and Lidocaine were effective for treating clustering seizures of CwG. We confirmed that the treatment period can be shortened without loss of efficacy. Therefore, we consider 1 day therapy with CBZ or Lidocaine to be sufficient.

Abstract
We present a search for f(J)(2220) production in radiative J/ψ→γf(J)(2220) decays using 460 fb⁻¹ of data collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e(+)e⁻ collider. The f(J)(2220) is searched for in the decays to K(+)K⁻ and K(S)⁰K(S)⁰. No evidence of this resonance is observed, and 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of the branching fractions for J/ψ→γf(J)(2220) and f(J)(2220)→K(+)K⁻(K(S)⁰K(S)⁰) as a function of spin and helicity are set at the level of 10⁻⁵, below the central values reported by the Mark III experiment.

Abstract
We report the measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa CP-violating angle γ through a Dalitz plot analysis of neutral D-meson decays to K(S)(0) π+ π- and K(S)(0) K+ K- produced in the processes B∓ → DK∓, B∓ D* K∓ with D* → Dπ(0), Dγ, and B∓ → DK*∓ with K*∓ → K(S)(0) π∓, using 468 million BB pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider at SLAC. We measure γ = (68 ± 14 ± 4 ± 3)° (modulo 180°), where the first error is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty, and the third reflects the uncertainty in the description of the neutral D decay amplitudes. This result is inconsistent with γ = 0 (no direct CP violation) with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations.

Abstract
We report a patient with Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS) who developed migraine-like headaches followed by cerebral infarction. SWS without facial nevus was diagnosed based on calcification detected by CT and pial angioma detected by enhanced MRI. His migraine-like headaches were preceded by left homonymous hemianopsia, which persisted for more than 60 min. Although homonymous hemianopsia disappeared with cessation of the headache until 13 years of age, from age 14 years onward, this homonymous hemianopsia persisted after the headaches ended. Moreover, reduced cerebral blood flow was seen in the right occipital area on SPECT. At first, his left homonymous hemianopsia persisted for several months after the headache disappeared, but it had recovered completely. However, the durations of episodes of left homonymous hemianopsia, which persisted after headache disappearance, gradually became longer. At last one year after his first admission, the visual defect had become permanent. SWS is well known to be associated with migraine attacks and hemianopsia. However, the course of our present patient, i.e. recurrent homonymous hemianopsia, associated with migraine-like headaches becoming permanent, is rare. The pathophysiological mechanism underlying this clinical course is uncertain. The efficacy of valproate and propranolol as preventive therapy has been inadequate, to date.

Abstract
We report a direct measurement of D0-D0 mixing parameters through a time-dependent amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plots of D(0) → K(S)(0) π+ π- and, for the first time, D0 → K(S)(0)K+ K- decays. The low-momentum pion π(s)(+) in the decay D*+ → D0 π(s)(+) identifies the flavor of the neutral D meson at its production. Using 468.5 fb(-1) of e+ e- colliding-beam data recorded near square root(s)=10.6 GeV by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy collider at SLAC, we measure the mixing parameters x = [1.6 ± 2.3(stat) ± 1.2(syst) ± 0.8(model)] × 10(-3), and y = [5.7 ± 2.0(stat) ± 1.3(syst) ± 0.7(model)] × 10(-3). These results provide the best measurement to date of x and y. The knowledge of the value of x, in particular, is crucial for understanding the origin of mixing.

Abstract
Using 467 fb(-1) of e+e- annihilation data collected with the BABAR detector, we measure (B(τ- → μ- ν(μ) ν(τ)))/(B(τ- → e- ν(e) ν(τ))) =(0.9796±0.0016±0.0036), (B(τ- → π- ν(τ)))/(B(τ- → e- ν(e) ν(τ))) = (0.5945±0.0014±0.0061), and (B(τ- → K- ν(τ)))/(B(τ- → e- ν(e) ν(τ))) = (0.03882±0.00032±0.00057), where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. From these precision τ measurements, we test the standard model assumption of μ-e and τ-μ charge current lepton universality and provide determinations of |Vus| experimentally independent of the decay of a kaon.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We investigated the clinical courses of children with influenza infection, who showed abnormal behavior, who were treated with oseltamivir (Tamiflu). SUBJECTS The subjects were 22 children, 2-15 (mean+/-SD, 6.6+/-3.2) years old, admitted to our hospital during the 2004-2005, 2005-2006, and 2006-2007 influenza seasons. Abnormal behavior appeared before treatment with oseltamivir in 13 children (pre-Tami group), and after administration of the medication in 9 (post-Tami group). All patients continued to receive oseltamivir for 3-5 days after admission. RESULTS Meaningless speech and movements without a specific purpose were the most frequent abnormal behavior (16 children), while illusions, delusions, and misidentifying awareness were the second most common (14 children). Sensations of marked fear and excitement were recognized in 6 children. One child rushed up and down the stairs unconsciously, raising concern that a serious accident might occur. All patients showed a favorable clinical course, without worsening of neurological symptoms or the development of encephalopathy, and outcomes were good. The clinical course, number of recurrences of abnormal behavior, and outcome were similar in the pre-Tami and post-Tami groups. CONCLUSIONS Our observations suggest that oseltamivir is not a prerequisite for the development of abnormal behavior and does not worsen the clinical manifestations of abnormal behaviors, although further investigations are needed to determine whether oseltamivir is necessary, or even useful, for patients with influenza virus encephalopathy.

Test of lepton universality in Υ(1S) decays at BABAR. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2010; 104:191801. Abstract
The ratio R(τμ)(Υ(1S))=Γ(Υ(1S)→τ+ τ-)/Γ(Υ(1S)→μ+ μ-) is measured using a sample of (121.8±1.2)×10(6)Υ(3S) events recorded by the BABAR detector. This measurement is intended as a test of lepton universality and as a search for a possible light pseudoscalar Higgs boson. In the standard model (SM) this ratio is expected to be close to 1. Any significant deviations would violate lepton universality and could be introduced by the coupling to a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson. The analysis studies the decays Υ(3S)→Υ(1S)π+ π-, Υ(1S)→l+ l-, where l=μ, τ. The result, R(τμ)(Υ(1S))=1.005±0.013(stat)±0.022(syst), shows no deviation from the expected SM value, while improving the precision with respect to previous measurements.

Abstract
Charged-lepton flavor-violating processes are unobservable in the standard model, but they are predicted to be enhanced in several extensions to the standard model, including supersymmetry and models with leptoquarks or compositeness. We present a search for such processes in a sample of 99x10(6)Upsilon(2S) decays and 117x10(6)Upsilon(3S) decays collected with the BABAR detector. We place upper limits on the branching fractions B(Upsilon(nS)-->e(+/-)tau(-/+)) and B(Upsilon(nS)-->mu(+/-)tau(-/+)) (n=2,3) at the 10(-6) level and use these results to place lower limits of order 1 TeV on the mass scale of charged-lepton flavor-violating effective operators.

Abstract
Mucus production is a cardinal feature of bronchial asthma, contributing to morbidity and mortality in the disease. Goblet cells are major mucus-producing cells, and goblet cell hyperplasia (GCH) is one feature of airway remodeling, defined as structural changes occurring in the airway. A number of studies have demonstrated that Th2-type cells play critical roles in this process and that particularly interleukin-13 (IL-13), among Th2-type cytokines, is a central mediator for GCH. However, the mechanism underlying how Th2 cytokines induce mucus production or GCH is poorly understood. Mouse calcium-activated chloride channel-3 (mCLCA-3; gob-5)/human CLCA-1 acts as a downstream molecule of Th2 cytokines, IL-4/IL-9/IL-13 signals, playing an important role in mucus production. Moreover, we have recently found that pendrin, an anion transporter, is induced by IL-13 and causes mucus production in airway epithelial cells. It is hoped that if we can clarify how mucus is produced, this will lead to development of novel therapeutic reagents to suppress mucus production in bronchial asthma.

Abstract
The photoluminescence spectra from a quantum-dot exciton weakly-coupled to a planar photonic-crystal cavity is experimentally investigated by temperature tuning. Significant resonance shifts of the cavity mode are observed as the cavity mode spectrally approaches that of the exciton mode, showing the appearance of cavity-to-exciton attraction or mode pulling. Cavity-mode spectral shifts are also found theoretically using a master equation model that includes incoherent pump processes for the coupled exciton and cavity, pure dephasing, and allows for photon emission via radiation modes and the leaky cavity mode. Both experiments and theory show clear cavity mode spectral shifts in the photoluminescence spectra, when certain coupling parameters are met. However, discrepancies between the experimental data and theory, including more pronounced spectral shifts in the measurements, indicate that other unknown mode-pulling effects may also be occurring.

Abstract
Searches for lepton-flavor-violating decays of a tau lepton to a lighter mass lepton and a photon have been performed with the entire data set of (963+/-7)x10{6} tau decays collected by the BABAR detector near the Upsilon(4S), Upsilon(3S) and Upsilon(2S) resonances. The searches yield no evidence of signals and we set upper limits on the branching fractions of B(tau{+/-}-->e{+/-}gamma)<3.3x10{-8} and B(tau{+/-}-->mu{+/-}gamma)<4.4x10{-8} at 90% confidence level.

Measurement of |V(cb)| and the form-factor slope in B --> Dl- nu(l) decays in events tagged by a fully reconstructed B meson. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2010; 104:011802. [PMID: 20366358 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.104.011802] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/27/2009] [Indexed: 05/29/2023]
Abstract
We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V(cb)| and the form-factor slope rho2 in B --> Dl- nu(l) decays based on 460x10(6) BB events recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. B --> Dl- nu(l) decays are selected in events in which a hadronic decay of the second B meson is fully reconstructed. We measure B(B- --> D0 l- nu(l))/B(B- --> Xl- nu(l)) = (0.255+/-0.009+/-0.009) and B(B0 --> D+ l- nu(l))/B(B0 --> Xl- nu(l)) = (0.230+/-0.011+/-0.011), along with the differential decay distribution in B --> Dl- nu(l) decays. We then determine G(1)|V(cb)| = (42.3+/-1.9+/-1.4)x10(-3) and rho2 = 1.20+/-0.09+/-0.04, where G(1) is the hadronic form factor at the point of zero recoil.

Abstract
We search for invisible decays of the Upsilon(1S) meson using a sample of 91.4 x 10(6) Upsilon(3S) mesons collected at the BABAR/PEP-II B factory. We select events containing the decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi(+)pi(-)Upsilon(1S) and search for evidence of an undetectable Upsilon(1S) decay recoiling against the dipion system. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction B(Upsilon(1S) --> invisible) < 3.0 x 10(-4) at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract
A precise measurement of the cross section of the process e(+)e(-) --> pi(+)pi(-)(gamma) from threshold to an energy of 3 GeV is obtained with the initial state radiation (ISR) method using 232 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector at e(+)e(-) center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. The ISR luminosity is determined from a study of the leptonic process e(+)e(-) --> mu(+)mu(-)gamma(gamma). The leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly calculated using the pipi cross section measured from threshold to 1.8 GeV is (514.1 +/- 2.2(stat) +/- 3.1(syst)) x 10(-10).

Abstract
We present an analysis of the decays B{0}-->K{*0}(892)gamma and B{+}-->K{*+}(892)gamma using a sample of about 383 x 10{6} BB[-over ] events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy B factory. We measure the branching fractions B(B{0}-->K{*0}gamma)=(4.47+/-0.10+/-0.16) x 10{-5} and B(B{+}-->K{*+}gamma)=(4.22+/-0.14+/-0.16) x 10{-5}. We constrain the direct CP asymmetry to be -0.033<A(B-->K{*}gamma)<0.028 and the isospin asymmetry to be 0.017<Delta{0-} < 0.116, where the limits are determined by the 90% confidence interval and include both the statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Abstract
We present evidence of D{0}-D[-over ]{0} mixing using a time-dependent amplitude analysis of the decay D{0}-->K+pi{-}pi;{0} in a data sample of 384 fb{-1} collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e{-} collider at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Assuming CP conservation, we measure the mixing parameters x{Kpipi{0}}{'}=[2.61{-0.68}{+0.57}(stat)+/-0.39(syst)]%, y{Kpipi;{0}}{'}=[-0.06{-0.64}{+0.55}(stat)+/-0.34(syst)]%. This result is inconsistent with the no-mixing hypothesis with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations. We find no evidence of CP violation in mixing.

A pilot study on the changes in immunity after ACTH therapy in patients with West syndrome. Brain Dev 2009; 31:739-43. Abstract
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) has been the first-line drug for the treatment of West syndrome, although the therapy has various adverse effects. ACTH depresses resistance to a variety of bacterial, viral, protozoal, and fungal agents. The timing of the various vaccinations is delayed after ACTH therapy in Japan, because the immune system is believed to be affected for approximately 6 months. However, the duration of the effect of ACTH on the immune system is not known. Therefore, we examined changes in the immunity levels before and after ACTH therapy. We measured white blood cell counts, lymphocyte counts, T/B cell counts, CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell counts, CD 4/8 ratio, lymphocyte blastoid transformation by PHA or Con-A, and the levels of IgA, IgM, and IgG before, immediately after, and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after ACTH therapy. The lymphocyte counts and CD4(+) T cell counts were significantly decreased immediately after and at 1 and 3 months after the therapy, and did not return to the previous levels even at 6 months and 12 months after ACTH treatment; however, these levels returned to within normal limits (within the 95% confidence interval). Immunoglobulin levels did not change after the ACTH therapy. Helper T cells were more depressed than cytotoxic T cells after ACTH therapy.

Search for a low-mass higgs boson in Upsilon(3S)-->gammaA(0), A(0)-->tau(+)tau(-) at BABAR. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2009; 103:181801. Abstract
We search for a light Higgs boson A0 in the radiative decay Upsilon(3S)-->gammaA(0), A(0)-->tau+tau-, tau+-->e+nu(e)nu(tau), or tau+-->mu+nu(mu)nu(tau). The data sample contains 122x10(6) Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BABAR detector. We find no evidence for a narrow structure in the studied tau+tau- invariant mass region of 4.03<m(tau+tau-)<10.10 GeV/c2. We exclude at the 90% confidence level (C.L.) a low-mass Higgs boson decaying to tau+tau- with a product branching fraction B(Upsilon(3S)-->gammaA(0))xB(A(0)-->tau+tau-)>(1.5-16)x10(-5) across the m(tau+tau-) range. We also set a 90% C.L. upper limit on the tau+tau- decay of the eta(b) at B(eta(b)-->tau+tau-)<8%.

Abstract
We have performed a search for the eta_{b}(1S) meson in the radiative decay of the Upsilon(2S) resonance using a sample of 91.6x10(6) Upsilon(2S) events recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. We observe a peak in the photon energy spectrum at Egamma=609.3(-4.5)(+4.6)(stat)+/-1.9(syst) MeV, corresponding to an eta(b)(1S) mass of 9394.2(-4.9)(+4.8)(stat)+/-2.0(syst) MeV/c2. The branching fraction for the decay Upsilon(2S)-->gamma(eta)b(1S) is determined to be [3.9+/-1.1(stat)-0.9+1.1(syst)]x10(-4). We find the ratio of branching fractions B[Upsilon(2S)-->gamma(eta)b(1S)]/B[Upsilon(3S)-->gamma(eta)b(1S)]=0.82+/-0.24(stat)(-0.19)(+0.20)(syst).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To clarify the features of delirious behavior in patients with acute necrotizing encephalopathy. METHODS We retrospectively evaluated the clinical course of 38 children with acute necrotizing encephalopathy diagnosed on the basis of neuroradiological findings. The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of delirious behavior. We compared clinical features, laboratory data, neuroimaging findings, and outcome between those with and without delirious behavior. In patients with delirious behavior, chronological sequence of neurological symptoms and the characteristics of delirious behavior were investigated. RESULTS Delirious behavior was observed in 8 patients. Patient characteristics or most laboratory data on admission were not significantly different between those with and without delirious behavior. Brainstem lesions were more frequent in patients with delirious behavior than in those without. In contrast, lesions in lentiform nuclei, cerebral hemisphere, or cerebellum were relatively more frequent in patients without delirious behavior. It was the initial neurological symptom in 7 of 8 patients. Stupor and seizures were observed after delirious behavior in most patients. CONCLUSIONS Delirious behavior was not uncommon in children with acute necrotizing encephalopathy. Brainstem lesions may be related to the development of delirious behavior of children with acute necrotizing encephalopathy.

Abstract
We search for evidence of a light scalar boson in the radiative decays of the Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) resonances: Upsilon(2S,3S)-->gammaA0, A0-->mu+mu-. Such a particle appears in extensions of the standard model, where a light CP-odd Higgs boson naturally couples strongly to b quarks. We find no evidence for such processes in the mass range 0.212 < or = mA0 < or = 9.3 GeV in the samples of 99 x 10(6) Upsilon(2S) and 122 x 10(6) Upsilon(3S) decays collected by the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II B factory and set stringent upper limits on the effective coupling of the b quark to the A0. We also limit the dimuon branching fraction of the etab meson: B(etab-->mu+mu-)<0.9% at 90% confidence level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A wide variety of systemic lesions have been seen in patients with autoimmune pancreatitis. The pulmonary involvement of autoimmune pancreatitis was analysed to clarify the clinicopathological features of pulmonary lesions in comparison with pulmonary sarcoidosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Nineteen patients had autoimmune pancreatitis and eight had pulmonary sarcoidosis. The symptoms, laboratory data, chest computed tomography, Gallium-67 scintigraphy, pulmonary function testing and bronchoscopy findings, including the histological IgG4-immunostaining and IgG subclasses in the bronchoalveolar lavage in autoimmune pancreatitis, were collected to compare them with pulmonary sarcoidosis. RESULTS The serum total protein, IgG and IgG4 levels were found to be significantly elevated in comparison with pulmonary sarcoidosis. In autoimmune pancreatitis, 17 patients showed bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy, while eight showed pulmonary nodules on chest computed tomography. Eighteen of 19 patients on Gallium-67 scintigraphy showed accumulation spots in either the hilar or mediastinal lymph nodes. Six patients with pulmonary nodules demonstrated accumulation spots in the corresponding lesions on chest computed tomography. All eight patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis showed accumulation spots in either the hilar or mediastinal lymph nodes. Bronchoalveolar lavage IgG4 in autoimmune pancreatitis showed a significant increase in comparison with pulmonary sarcoidosis. The histological findings obtained by a transbronchial lung biopsy showed the infiltration of lymphocytes and plasma cells in the thickened interstitum and alveoli with IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration in patients with autoimmune pancreatitis. CONCLUSION IgG4 in the bronchoalveolar lavage was seen at remarkably increased levels and IgG4-positive plasma cells were identified in the pulmonary lesions of patients with autoimmune pancreatitis.

Abstract
We present a study of B decays into semileptonic final states containing charged and neutral D1(2420) and D_{2};{*}(2460). The analysis is based on a data sample of 208 fb;{-1} collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. With a simultaneous fit to four different decay chains, the semileptonic branching fractions are extracted from measurements of the mass difference Deltam=m(D;{**})-m(D) distributions. Product branching fractions are determined to be B(B;{+}-->D_{1};{0}l;{+}nu_{l})xB(D_{1};{0}-->D;{*+}pi;{-})=(2.97+/-0.17+/-0.17)x10;{-3}, B(B;{+}-->D_{2};{*0}l;{+}nu_{l})xB(D_{2};{*0}-->D;{(*)+}pi;{-})=(2.29+/-0.23+/-0.21)x10;{-3}, B(B;{0}-->D_{1};{-}l;{+}nu_{l})xB(D_{1};{-}-->D;{*0}pi;{-})=(2.78+/-0.24+/-0.25)x10;{-3} and B(B;{0}-->D_{2};{*-}l;{+}nu_{l})xB(D_{2};{*-}-->D;{(*)0}pi;{-})=(1.77+/-0.26+/-0.11)x10;{-3}. In addition we measure the branching ratio Gamma(D_{2};{*}-->Dpi;{-})/Gamma(D_{2};{*}-->D;{(*)}pi;{-})=0.62+/-0.03+/-0.02.

Abstract
We report an analysis of tau;{-} decaying into omegapi;{-}nu_{tau} with omega --> pi;{+}pi;{-}pi;{0} using a data sample containing nearly 320 x 10;{6}tau pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-Factory. We find no evidence for second-class currents, and we set an upper limit of 0.69% at 90% confidence level for the fraction of second-class currents in this decay mode.
