Quantitative low-energy ion beam characterization by beam profiling and imaging via scintillation screens

This study presents the imaging and characterization of low-current ion beams in the neutralized state monitored via single crystal YAG:Ce (Y₃Al₅O₁₂) scintillators. To validate the presented beam diagnostic tool, Faraday cup measurements and test etchings were performed. Argon ions with a typical energy of 1.0 keV were emitted from an inductively coupled radio-frequency (13.56 MHz) ion beam source with total currents of some mA. Different beam properties, such as, lateral ion current density, beam divergence angle, and current density in pulsed ion beams have been studied to obtain information about the spatial beam profile and the material removal rate distribution. We observed excellent imaging properties with the scintillation screen and achieved a detailed characterization of the neutralized ion beam. A strong correlation between the scintillator light output, the ion current density, and the material removal rate could be observed.

Linear chirped slope profile for spatial calibration in slope measuring deflectometry

Slope measuring deflectometry is commonly used by the X-ray optics community to measure the long-spatial-wavelength surface figure error of optical components dedicated to guide and focus X-rays under grazing incidence condition at synchrotron and free electron laser beamlines. The best performing instruments of this kind are capable of absolute accuracy on the level of 30-50 nrad. However, the exact bandwidth of the measurements, determined at the higher spatial frequencies by the instrument's spatial resolution, or more generally by the instrument's modulation transfer function (MTF) is hard to determine. An MTF calibration method based on application of a test surface with a one-dimensional (1D) chirped height profile of constant amplitude was suggested in the past. In this work, we propose a new approach to designing the test surfaces with a 2D-chirped topography, specially optimized for MTF characterization of slope measuring instruments. The design of the developed MTF test samples based on the proposed linear chirped slope profiles (LCSPs) is free of the major drawback of the 1D chirped height profiles, where in the slope domain, the amplitude strongly increases with the local spatial frequency of the profile. We provide the details of fabrication of the LCSP samples. The results of first application of the developed test samples to measure the spatial resolution of the BESSY-NOM at different experimental arrangements are also presented and discussed.

Surfactant Behavior of Sodium Dodecylsulfate in Deep Eutectic Solvent Choline Chloride/Urea

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) resemble ionic liquids but are formed from an ionic mixture instead of being a single ionic compound. Here we present some results that demonstrate that surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) remains surface-active and shows self-assembly phenomena in the most commonly studied DES, choline chloride/urea. X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) suggest that the behavior is significantly different from that in water. Our SANS data supports our determination of the critical micelle concentration using surface-tension measurements and suggests that the micelles formed in DES do not have the same shape and size as those seen in water. Reflectivity measurements have also demonstrated that the surfactants remain surface-active below this concentration.

Beryllium bis(diazaborolyl): old neighbors finally shake hands

The synthesis of a linear beryllium bis(diazaborolyl) compound featuring the first non-cluster bond between boron and beryllium has been achieved through the reaction of Yamashita's lithium diazaborolide and BeCl2. In accord with the established chemistry of beryllium, the bonding is polar covalent in character, as determined by structural and spectroscopic analysis, as well as reactivity studies.

Reconciling reported and unreported HFC emissions with atmospheric observations

We infer global and regional emissions of five of the most abundant hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) using atmospheric measurements from the Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment and the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan, networks. We find that the total CO2-equivalent emissions of the five HFCs from countries that are required to provide detailed, annual reports to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) increased from 198 (175-221) Tg-CO2-eq ⋅ y(-1) in 2007 to 275 (246-304) Tg-CO2-eq ⋅ y(-1) in 2012. These global warming potential-weighted aggregated emissions agree well with those reported to the UNFCCC throughout this period and indicate that the gap between reported emissions and global HFC emissions derived from atmospheric trends is almost entirely due to emissions from nonreporting countries. However, our measurement-based estimates of individual HFC species suggest that emissions, from reporting countries, of the most abundant HFC, HFC-134a, were only 79% (63-95%) of the UNFCCC inventory total, while other HFC emissions were significantly greater than the reported values. These results suggest that there are inaccuracies in the reporting methods for individual HFCs, which appear to cancel when aggregated together.

Ionome changes in Xylella fastidiosa-infected Nicotiana tabacum correlate with virulence and discriminate between subspecies of bacterial isolates

Characterization of ionomes has been used to uncover the basis of nutrient utilization and environmental adaptation of plants. Here, ionomic profiles were used to understand the phenotypic response of a plant to infection by genetically diverse isolates of Xylella fastidiosa, a gram-negative, xylem-limited bacterial plant pathogen. In this study, X. fastidiosa isolates were used to infect a common model host (Nicotiana tabacum 'SR1'), and leaf and sap concentrations of eleven elements together with plant colonization and symptoms were assessed. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed that changes in the ionome were significantly correlated with symptom severity and bacterial populations in host petioles. Moreover, plant ionome modification by infection could be used to differentiate the X. fastidiosa subspecies with which the plant was infected. This report establishes host ionome modification as a phenotypic response to infection.

[Cross-sectional field Q7"medicine of aging and the elderly" at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin : Curriculum and evaluation by students]

AIMS

There have only been a few publications focussing on how the curriculum Q7 "medicine of aging and the elderly" is implemented at German medical schools. In order to stimulate discussion about the implementation of Q7 the authors present the results of a survey of medical students of the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The aim of the survey was to identify items that contribute to a good course and thus improve the quality of lectures and courses in geriatric medicine with the overall aim to encourage more students to become geriatricians after their studies.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Medical students from the fifth clinical semester were interviewed in anonymous form following each course using standardized questionnaires for organizational and didactic topics. Factor analysis, proof of reliability, descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were performed as statistical methods.

RESULTS

The proof of reliability of questionnaires showed good internal consistency with Cronbachs alpha values of 0.88 (seminars), 0.91 (lectures) and 0.92 (bedside teaching). The overall response rate was very high (95.3%, n = 803 questionnaires). The ratings for questionnaire items in the three teaching formats (i.e. seminars, lectures, bedside teaching) ranged mostly from good to very good. In the correlation analysis across all three teaching formats clear communication of learning objectives, the treatment of topics according to their own expectations and the learning experience were rated as most relevant overall.

CONCLUSIONS

The evaluation results indicate a high level of satisfaction with the curriculum of geriatrics at the Charité, which can therefore be recommended across faculties taking into account the criteria named.

The influence of biofilms on the migration of uranium in acid mine drainage (AMD) waters

The uranium mine in Königstein (Germany) is currently in the process of being flooded. Huge mass of Ferrovum myxofaciens dominated biofilms are growing in the acid mine drainage (AMD) water as macroscopic streamers and as stalactite-like snottites hanging from the ceiling of the galleries. Microsensor measurements were performed in the AMD water as well as in the biofilms from the drainage channel on-site and in the laboratory. The analytical data of the AMD water was used for the thermodynamic calculation of the predominance fields of the aquatic uranium sulfate (UO(2)SO(4)) and UO(2)(++) speciation as well as of the solid uranium species Uranophane [Ca(UO(2))(2)(SiO(3)OH)(2)∙5H(2)O] and Coffinite [U(SiO(4))(1-x)(OH)(4x)], which are defined in the stability field of pH>4.8 and Eh<960 mV and pH>0 and Eh<300 mV, respectively. The plotting of the measured redox potential and pH of the AMD water and the biofilm into the calculated pH-Eh diagram showed that an aqueous uranium(VI) sulfate complex exists under the ambient conditions. According to thermodynamic calculations a retention of uranium from the AMD water by forming solid uranium(VI) or uranium(IV) species will be inhibited until the pH will increase to >4.8. Even analysis by Energy-filtered Transmission Electron Microscopy (EF-TEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) within the biofilms did not provide any microscopic or spectroscopic evidence for the presence of uranium immobilization. In laboratory experiments the first phase of the flooding process was simulated by increasing the pH of the AMD water. The results of the experiments indicated that the F. myxofaciens dominated biofilms may have a substantial impact on the migration of uranium. The AMD water remained acid although it was permanently neutralized with the consequence that the retention of uranium from the aqueous solution by the formation of solid uranium species will be inhibited.

Emissions of halogenated compounds in East Asia determined from measurements at Jeju Island, Korea

High-frequency in situ measurements at Gosan (Jeju Island, Korea) during November 2007 to December 2008 have been combined with interspecies correlation analysis to estimate national emissions of halogenated compounds (HCs) in East Asia, including the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), sulfur hexafluoride (SF(6)), and other chlorinated and brominated compounds. Our results suggest that overall China is the dominant emitter of HCs in East Asia, however significant emissions are also found in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan for HFC-134a, HFC-143a, C(2)F(6), SF(6), CH(3)CCl(3), and HFC-365mfc. The combined emissions of CFCs, halon-1211, HCFCs, HFCs, PFCs, and SF(6) from all four countries in 2008 are 25.3, 1.6, 135, 42.6, 3.6, and 2.0 kt/a, respectively. They account for approximately 15%, 26%, 29%, 16%, 32%, and 26.5% of global emissions, respectively. Our results show signs that Japan has successfully phased out CFCs and HCFCs in compliance with the Montreal Protocol (MP), Korea has started transitioning from HCFCs to HFCs, while China still significantly consumes HCFCs. Taiwan, while not directly regulated under the MP, is shown to have adapted the use of HFCs. Combined analysis of emission rates and the interspecies correlation matrix presented in this study proves to be a powerful tool for monitoring and diagnosing changes in consumption of HCs in East Asia.

[Centrifugal plaques with central atrophy and peripheral scale on the scalp]

A 62-year-old man presented with slowly progredient, centrifugal, peripherally hyperkeratotic, centrally atrophic, slightly pruritic lesions on his scalp for at least 9 months. A punch biopsy stained with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) revealed minimal epidermal acanthosis and chimney-like parakeratosis (cornoid lamella) around a follicle. Discrete spongiosis of the epidermis was observed, as well as a lymphocytic cell infiltration in the papillary dermis. Based on the clinical picture and the histopathological examination the diagnosis of porokeratosis of Mibelli was made. Topical treatment was started using an urea and vitamin A acid preparation.

Effect of obesity on plasma clusterin, [corrected] a proposed modulator of leptin action

Clusterin, a protein constituent of HDL, was recently shown to bind plasma leptin in vitro and has been proposed to modulate leptin activity. To gain insight into a possible role for plasma clusterin in human obesity, we measured plasma clusterin, leptin, soluble leptin receptor (sObR), and lipoproteins in 70 obese adolescents (12.4 ± 1.6 y; BMI-SD score (SDS-BMI) 2.35 ± 0.47) before and after 3 wk of weight reduction in a dietary camp and in 44 normal weight controls. Binding of plasma leptin to HDL or clusterin was studied using ultracentrifugation and immunoaffinity chromatography. During weight reduction, clusterin decreased from 14.6 ± 4.1 to 10.3 ± 2.9 mg/dL, p < 0.001) in obese adolescents, whereas sObR increased. However, baseline plasma clusterin in obese adolescents did not differ from controls. Clusterin did not correlate with SDS-BMI, weight loss, leptin, or lipoproteins. Only ∼ 1% of plasma leptin was associated with clusterin/apoA-I complexes or with HDL. Our results do not support a role for plasma clusterin as an important leptin-binding protein or modulator of leptin action. The decrease of plasma clusterin during weight reduction may be an effect of the hypocaloric diet rather than being directly linked to weight loss.

Measurement of zinc stable isotope ratios in biogeochemical matrices by double-spike MC-ICPMS and determination of the isotope ratio pool available for plants from soil

Analysis of naturally occurring isotopic variations is a promising tool for investigating Zn transport and cycling in geological and biological settings. Here, we present the recently installed double-spike (DS) technique at the MAGIC laboratories at Imperial College London. The procedure improves on previous published DS methods in terms of ease of measurement and precisions obtained. The analytical method involves addition of a (64)Zn-(67)Zn double-spike to the samples prior to digestion, separation of Zn from the sample matrix by ion exchange chromatography, and isotopic analysis by multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The accuracy and reproducibility of the method were validated by analyses of several in-house and international elemental reference materials. Multiple analyses of pure Zn standard solutions consistently yielded a reproducibility of about ±0.05‰ (2 SD) for δ(66)Zn, and comparable precisions were obtained for analyses of geological and biological materials. Highly fractionated Zn standards analyzed by DS and standard sample bracketing yield slightly varying results, which probably originate from repetitive fractionation events during manufacture of the standards. However, the δ(66)Zn values (all reported relative to JMC Lyon Zn) for two less fractionated in-house Zn standard solutions, Imperial Zn (0.10 ± 0.08‰: 2 SD) and London Zn (0.08 ± 0.04‰), are within uncertainties to data reported with different mass spectrometric techniques and instruments. Two standard reference materials, blend ore BCR 027 and ryegrass BCR 281, were also measured, and the δ(66)Zn were found to be 0.25 ± 0.06‰ (2 SD) and 0.40 ± 0.09‰, respectively. Taken together, these standard measurements ascertain that the double-spike methodology is suitable for accurate and precise Zn isotope analyses of a wide range of natural samples. The newly installed technique was consequently applied to soil samples and soil leachates to investigate the isotopic signature of plant available Zn. We find that the isotopic composition is heavier than the residual, indicating the presence of loosely bound Zn deposited by atmospheric pollution, which is readily available to plants.
