Abstract
DNA biosensors based on nucleic acid hybridization processes are rapidly being developed towards the goal of rapid and inexpensive diagnosis of genetic and infectious diseases. Electrochemical transducers are often being used for detecting the DNA hybridization event, due to their high sensitivity, small dimensions, low cost, and compatibility with microfabrication technology. In this study, an electrochemical biosensor for the voltammetric detection of DNA sequences related to the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and TT virus (TTV) from polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplified real samples is described for the first time. The biosensor relies on the immobilization of the 21- or 24-mer single stranded oligonucleotides (probe) related to the HBV and TTV sequences and hybridization of these oligonucleotides with their complementary sequences (target) at carbon paste electrode (CPE). The extent of hybridization between the probe and target sequences was determined by using square wave voltammetry (SWV) with moving average baseline correction and methylene blue (MB) as the hybridization indicator. As a result of the interaction between MB and the bound guanine bases of hybrid at CPE surface, the MB signal decreased, when it was compared with the MB signal, which was observed with probe modified CPE. The difference between the MB signals, obtained from the hybrid modified and the probe modified CPE is used to detect the DNA sequences of the infectious diseases from PCR amplified real samples. Numerous factors affecting the target hybridization and indicator binding reactions are optimized to maximize the sensitivity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Certain drugs including oxyphenisatin, methyldopa, nitrofurantoin, diclofenac, interferon, infliximab, pemoline, minocycline, atorvastatin, and rosuvastatin can induce hepatocellular injury that mimics autoimmune hepatitis. Whether drugs and herbs unmask or induce autoimmune hepatitis or simply cause a drug-induced hepatitis with accompanying autoimmune features is unclear. We describe the clinicopathologic details of eight cases with ornidazole-induced hepatitis with autoimmune features. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients who presented with acute hepatitis between February 2001 and March 2009 were reevaluated for the etiology of liver disease. Patients with acute viral hepatitis, metabolic liver disease, vascular liver disease such as Budd-Chiari syndrome, biliary obstruction, or alcohol consumption were excluded. The autoimmune hepatitis scores, which were calculated at the time of diagnosis according to the criteria of the International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group, were recorded. In addition, the simplified criteria of the same group were applied retrospectively to each patient. Patients with ornidazole-induced toxic hepatitis with autoimmune hepatitis were included to constitute the study group of this report. All patients underwent initial liver biopsy, and one patient underwent liver biopsy three years later. All biopsies were scored according to the hepatitis scoring system by Ishak et al. (10). RESULTS Overall, eight patients (all female) were diagnosed as drug-induced autoimmune hepatitis. With the exception of one patient, all were treated with prednisolone 30 mg/day + azathioprine 50 mg/day. The prednisolone dose was tapered according to the decrease in the level of transaminases. A two-year treatment program was planned for all patients. CONCLUSIONS Ornidazole may cause drug-induced autoimmune hepatitis. Withdrawal of the drug may not provide the recovery despite a rather long wait. Thus, immunosuppressive therapy may be suggested in these cases.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Data are limited on the safety and effectiveness of oral antivirals other than lamivudine and adefovir dipivoxil for treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in patients with decompensated liver disease. This Phase 2, double-blind study randomized 112 patients with CHB and decompensated liver disease to receive either tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF; n = 45), emtricitabine (FTC)/TDF (fixed-dose combination; n = 45), or entecavir (ETV; n = 22). The primary endpoint was safety; more specifically, tolerability failure (adverse events resulting in permanent treatment discontinuation) and confirmed serum creatinine increase ≥ 0.5 mg/dL from baseline or confirmed serum phosphorus <2 mg/dL. Patients with insufficient viral suppression (e.g., confirmed HBV DNA ≥ 400 copies/mL at week 8 or 24) could begin open-label FTC/TDF but were considered failures in this interim week 48 analysis for efficacy endpoints. Tolerability failure was infrequent across arms: 6.7% TDF, 4.4% FTC/TDF, and 9.1% ETV (P = 0.622) as were confirmed renal parameters meeting threshold 8.9%, 6.7%, and 4.5% (P = 1.000), respectively. Six patients died (none considered related to study drug) and six received liver transplants (none had HBV recurrence). The adverse event and laboratory profiles were consistent with advanced liver disease and complications, with no unexpected safety signals. At week 48, HBV DNA was <400 copies/mL (69 IU/mL) in 70.5% (TDF), 87.8% (FTC/TDF), and 72.7% (ETV) of patients. Proportions with normal alanine aminotransferase were: 57% (TDF), 76% (FTC/TDF), and 55% (ETV). Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) loss/seroconversion occurred in 21%/21% (TDF), 27%/13% (FTC/TDF), and 0%/0% (ETV). Child-Turcotte-Pugh and Modification for End-stage Liver Disease scores improved in all groups. CONCLUSION All treatments were well tolerated in patients with decompensated liver disease due to CHB with improvement in virologic, biochemical, and clinical parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection, precise definition of the hepatic fibrosis stage is the most important parameter to assess the risk of disease progression. Correlation between the prognosis of the CHB and the level of hepatitis-B virus DNA (HBV-DNA) is well considered in recent years. AIMS The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between serum HBV-DNA level and histology of the liver. We also wanted to determine a threshold level of HBV-DNA for differentiation of low and high risk patients for progression. METHODS Two-hundred-fifty-nine patients with serum HBV-DNA level > 2000 copies/mL, determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and biopsy proven naïve CHB infection were evaluated. Liver biopsies were evaluated histopathologically according to the Ishak scoring system. Laboratory values such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase ratio (ALT) were tested every 3 months and the highest value of each patient was evaluated. RESULTS Mean age was 40 +/- 11 and 60% (155/259) of the patients were male. Mean laboratory values were as follows: AST: 52 +/- 46 U/L, ALT: 93 +/- 133 U/L, PLT: 224 +/- 60 1093)/l HBV DNA: 5.9 +/- 1.5 log copies/mL. In histological evaluation, mean inflammatory score was 4.34 +/- 2.72 and fibrosis score was 1.38 +/- 1.46. The fibrosis score was 0 or 1 in 63.3% (164/259) of the patients. The relationship between HBV-DNA level and histologic grade/stage was investigated and 15.000 copies/mL HBV DNA level was found as the threshold level to describe the activity of the disease. Fibrosis score was < 2 and/or grade < or = 5 in the patients who have HBV-DNA value below that level. CONCLUSION In patients who have serum HBV-DNA level < or = 15000/copies/mL, histological activity was almost always low, and it seems that these patients do not need a liver biopsy regardless of hepatitis-B-e antigen (HBeAg) status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Consuming wild mushrooms is an ordinary habit in late summer and autumn in our region. Every year, several cases of hepatic toxicity secondary to mushroom poisoning are observed because of poor identification of the mushrooms. Unfortunately some of them are fatal. Prometheus system is a newly developed extracorporeal liver support device for fractionated plasma separation and adsorption (FPSA) that enables removal of albumin-bound and water-soluble toxins. Therefore, it may be a promising treatment option for patients with liver failure due to mushroom poisoning. METHODOLOGY We studied 8 patients with mushroom poisoning. All patients underwent 1 to 4 consecutive FPSA (Prometheus)-system in addition to medical and supportive treatment such as fluid replacement, Penicillin G, N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and silymarin. A variety of clinical and biochemical parameters were assessed. RESULTS We had improvement of the biochemical parameters after first treatment with FPSA-system. Seven of 8 patients survived and were discharged to resume an independent life. One patient who had grade III encephalopathy when admitted to hospital died. No major adverse events were observed during the application of this therapy modality. CONCLUSIONS FPSA-system may be a safe and effective treatment option for patient with mushroom poisoning. Early hospitalization is essential in order to be successful. Controlled studies are needed to evaluate the efficacy of this new treatment choice on survival of patients with acute liver failure (ALF) due to mushroom poisoning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Human Cytochrome P450 (CYP) comprises a multigene family of microsomal enzymes that metabolize a wide variety of xenobiotics, including drugs and carcinogens. Although the a number of CYP enzymes were also detected in epithelial cells along the gastrointestinal tract, little is known about the expression of CYP genes in gastric tissue. METHODOLOGY In this study, the expression patterns of CYP isoforms was investigated in a total of 14 antral biopsy tissues obtained from the patients with either chronic gastritis (n = 6) or cancer (n = 8) by gene-specific real-time reverse transcriptase -PCR analyses. We employed primer sets specific for CYPs -1A1, -1A2, -2A6, -2B6, -2C, -2D6, -2E1, and -3A5. RESULTS Among the isoforms CYP1A1, CYP2C and CYP2D6 gave rise to detectable mRNAs in all 14 gastric tissues while the mRNAs for the other CYPs were detected in some of the tissues. The expression patterns were compared to clinical parameters. There were no significant differences in the parameters between the two groups; however the mRNA expression of CYP2A6 was significantly higher in women than man (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our data suggests that the CYP isoforms were independently expressed with respect to the pathological status in human gastric tissue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common in obese and diabetics. Serine protease inhibitor Kazal-1 (SPINK-1) protein is highly expressed in the liver and adipose tissue of diabetic and obese suggesting its role in NAFLD. SPINK-1 also behaves as an acute phase reactant protein. Some genetic factors including the genetic variations in SPINK-1 protein have been linked to chronic pancreatitis and diabetes. We therefore hypothesized that SPINK-1 mutations might be a risk factor for the development of NAFLD. METHODS Liver biopsy proven fifty NAFLD cases (20 steatohepatitis, 30 diffuse fatty liver disease and 44 healthy controls were included to the study. Liver function tests were measured. Body mass index was calculated. Insulin resistance was determined by using a homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). Ultrasound evaluation was performed for each subject. Common genetic mutations in the third exon of SPINK-1 gene were analyzed by direct sequencing method. RESULTS We found two cases with a SNP at N34S location in NAFLD group (allele frequency %4). One subject with diffuse fatty liver disease and other with liver cirrhosis due to NAFLD had N34S mutation. No SNPs were detected in healthy controls. In conclusions, in limited number of patients SPINK-1 mutations were not considered as a risk factor alone for NAFLD development.

Abstract
The acid-fast staining method is widely used in the diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis, a disease causing diarrhea in humans. However in this technique, some of Cryptosporidium spp oocysts can not be stained and seen as formed "ghost-like bodies" and which can only be evaluated by experienced microscopists. In the recent years, PCR technique which is proven to be also highly sensitive in diagnosis and genotyping, is used as an alternative method. In our study we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of PCR in diagnosis of cryptosporodiosis. Thirty-three stool samples, belonging to 22 patients who applied to Ege University Hospital, Parasitology Clinic between August 2001 - August 2003 and microscopically diagnosed as cryptosporodiosis has been included in the study. Twenty-three of these 33 samples were processed immediately, while ten samples were stored in 10% formalin. As the control group, 11 stool samples including 8 specimens with different parasites and 3 negative samples were selected. Nested-PCR is applied to all samples. The sensitivity and specifity of the method for fresh and formalin preserved samples were found to be 100% and 50%, respectively. As a conclusion, PCR technique is found to be useful for diagnosis in cryptosporodiosis patients with especially those including few oocysts in their fresh feces.

Abstract
The proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) plays an important role on the course of disease in familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). TNF-alpha gene promoter polymorphism may be a marker of susceptibility and severity of FMF. The aim of this study is to evaluate both TNF-alpha/238 and TNF-alpha/308 genotypes and allelic distribution in patients with FMF. Forty-one FMF patients and 43 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Genomic DNA was extracted from EDTA-preserved whole blood of whole series of patients and controls. Polymorphism of TNF-alpha promoter at positions -238 and -308 were detected by using amplification refractory mutation system polymerase chain reaction. TNF-alpha/238 and TNF-alpha/308 genotype distributions and allele frequencies of FMF patients and healthy volunteers were found to be similar. Moreover, there was no association between TNF-alpha/238 and TNF-alpha/308 genotypes and the frequency of acute attacks in FMF. TNF-alpha/238 and TNF-alpha/308 promoter polymorphisms do not seem to be major genetic risk factors for susceptibility to FMF and severity of the disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate a possible contribution from Helicobacter pylori to the etiopathogenesis of chronic otitis media. STUDY DESIGN Prospective clinical trial. METHODS Tympanomastoidectomy, radical mastoidectomy, and modified radical mastoidectomy procedures were performed according to the pathology of ear disease. Biopsy specimens were taken from middle ear, mastoid antrum, and tympanic orifice of eustachian tube. Helicobacter pylori DNA was extracted from these biopsy specimens by using nested polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Helicobacter pylori DNA was detected in 3 (7.9%) of 38 chronic otitis media patients. CONCLUSION Even though it is possible to detect Helicobacter pylori in middle ear cleft in chronic otitis media, its role in the etiopathogenesis of the issue is controversial.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare direct sequence analysis of partial HBV pol gene and Inno-LiPA HBV DR in serum samples of 120 chronic hepatitis B patients sent to the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory of Ege University Hospital because of lamivudine resistance. Sequence analysis was performed on ABI Prism 310 Genetic Analyzer. Comparison of Inno-LiPA and sequence results obtained by double-blind evaluation showed full agreement (both at rt180 and rt204) in 58.8% of samples. Visually rechecking of the electropherograms increased this rate to 68.3% Codon based rates are 81.7% and 75.8% at rt180 and rt204 respectively. LiPA detected variants in additional 12 (10%) samples, but missed one variant sample (both rt180 and rt204) and one sample was indeterminate due to poor probe binding. LiPA allows determination of mixed variants and seems to be more sensitive and simple for routine testing even though sequence analysis is still the gold standard for detecting new variants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Despite a proposed role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, antioxidant approaches have not been investigated sufficiently in the therapy of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Our aim was to determine whether vitamin E plus C therapy is effective in normalization of liver enzymes compared to ursodeoxycholic acid treatment in patients with fatty liver disease. METHODS This was an open-labeled, prospective, randomized study enrolling patients with histologically proven fatty liver disease who had chronically elevated alanine aminotransferase, despite a three-month reducing diet. Patients consuming alcohol (more than 20 g/day) were excluded. The patients were randomly prescribed either oral vitamin E (600 IU/day) plus vitamin C (500 mg/day) or ursodeoxycholic acid (10 mg/kg/day). Patients were randomized as two groups to receive vitamin E plus vitamin C combination (28 patients, 10 F) or ursodeoxycholic acid treatment (29 patients, 13 F). RESULTS There was no significant change in body mass index before and after the treatment in both groups. At the end of six months of therapy, serum aspartate aminotransferase and aminotransferase levels significantly decreased in both treatment options. Vitamin E and C combination was more efficacious on serum aminotransferase levels than ursodeoxycholic acid, but the difference was not significant. Alanine aminotransferase decreased to normal levels in 17 of 27 (63%) and in 16 of 29 patients (55%), respectively, in the two groups. Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase decreased in patients receiving ursodeoxycholic acid, but no change was obtained in the vitamin-treated patients. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin E plus C combination treatment is a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment option in patients with fatty liver disease, with results comparable to those obtained with ursodeoxycholic acid. Since more effective new therapeutic options are lacking, patients with fatty liver disease should be encouraged to take vitamin E and C supplements, which are safe and affordable.

Abstract
The only beneficial agent for the treatment of chronic delta hepatitis (CDH) is interferon (IFN). However, there is no consensus on the best dosage or duration of IFN therapy. As ribavirin (RBV) increases the sustained response when added to IFN in chronic hepatitis C, probably because of its immunomodulatory effect, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of 2-year IFN treatment and whether RBV had any additive effect to IFN in CDH. Methods Patients ( n=31) with CDH were randomized with a 1:2 ratio as 10 patients (3 females/7 males, age 39 ±9) receiving IFN monotherapy (9 MU IFN-α2a three times weekly) and 21 patients (8 females/13 males, age 38 ±11) receiving IFN plus RBV for 2 years (IFN at the same dosage and RBV at 1000–1200 mg/day). Alanine transferase normalization and hepatitis delta virus (HDV) RNA negativity at the end of treatment and at the end of the follow-up period (at least 6 months following 2-year treatment) were primary endpoints of the study. In addition, virological response and biochemical response were determined separately. Results Eight of 31 patients (25%) had cirrhosis in liver biopsies. Six patients from the IFN monotherapy group and 12 patients from the combination group had biochemical response. Five patients from the IFN monotherapy group and 11 patients from the combination group had virological response at the end of therapy. Two patients from the IFN group and five patients from the combination group had sustained biochemical response at the end of the follow-up period. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) activations with HBV DNA positivity were observed in two patients (one from the IFN monotherapy group, one from the combination group). Two patients (20%) in the IFN group and five patients (23.5%) in IFN plus RBV group remained as virological responders at the end of the follow-up period ( P>0.05). None of the patients with liver cirrhosis were responsive at the end of the follow-up period. Conclusion Almost 20% of the patients with CDH were responsive to 2-year IFN treatment at the end of the follow-up period and no additional effect of RBV was observed. Patients with advanced liver disease failed to respond to treatment.

Abstract
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most commonly prescribed group of drugs. Patients receiving NSAIDs often experience abdominal discomfort, and some of them develop serious gastrointestinal complications, such as ulceration, bleeding, perforation, or obstruction. Gastrointestinal side effects of NSAIDs are mostly attributed to cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition resulting in reduction of prostaglandin in gastric mucosa. Topical irritant effects are also contributed to their systemic effect of prostaglandin inhibition. Anti-inflammatory effects of NSAIDs are mediated by COX-2 inhibition, while COX-1 inhibition is responsible for gastric prostaglandin inhibition. Management of gastrointestinal complications of NSAIDs is costly. In order to prevent or treat the gastrointestinal complications of NSAIDs, anti-ulcer drugs can be used concomitantly. Other alternative is the application or substitution of COX-2 selective inhibitors, which spare gastric mucosal prostaglandin synthesis and do not damage the gastric mucosa. Application of COX-2 selective inhibitors as a first line treatment for arthritic disorders may not be cost-effective, if patients do not have any risk factors including advanced age, history of complicating peptic ulcer, concomitant anticoagulant and corticosteroid medication. Patients with risk factors or those developing gastrointestinal complications during the course of NSAID treatment can be treated with COX-2 selective inhibitors if necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Treatment with interferon-alpha has been shown to be effective in one-third of hepatitis B e antigen-positive chronic hepatitis B patients, but is clinically associated with relevant adverse events. AIM To investigate the safety of pegylated interferon alpha-2b in 300 hepatitis B e antigen-positive patients with compensated liver disease. METHODS Patients were treated with pegylated interferon alpha-2b for 52 weeks combined with either lamivudine 100 mg/day or placebo. Pegylated interferon alpha-2b was administered for 100 microg once a week for 32 weeks; thereafter, the dose was reduced to 50 microg once a week. Adverse events and their effect on study medication were reported at monthly visits in a standardized way. RESULTS The most frequently reported side-effects were flu-like syndrome (68%), headache (40%), fatigue (39%), myalgia (29%) and local reaction at the injection site (29%). These symptoms typically occurred within the first month of therapy and subsided during the course of therapy. Neutropenia and thrombocytopenia induced by pegylated interferon alpha-2b increased the risk of infections and bleeding complications, but these complications were rare and mild. The frequency of all side-effects was not different between patients treated with pegylated interferon alpha-2b combined with lamivudine or placebo. In 69 (22%) patients the dose of pegylated interferon alpha-2b was reduced prematurely. Of these dose reductions, 36 (52%) were because of neutropenia. Therapy was discontinued in 28 (8%) patients. The most frequent reasons for early discontinuation were psychiatric side-effects (depression, psychosis) and flu-like symptoms. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that low neutrophil count at baseline and cirrhosis were independent predictors of dose reduction or therapy discontinuation. CONCLUSION We conclude that in patients with chronic hepatitis B and compensated liver disease prolonged pegylated interferon alpha-2b therapy is safe, and that pre-existent cirrhosis and neutropenia are the most important predictors of dose reduction or early treatment discontinuation.

At the end of treatment, there was no difference between the groups with respect to HBV DNA negativity, ALT normalization and breakthrough rate. Histological improvement was remarkable in each group, but fibrosis score and necro-inflammatory activity were much lower in lamivudine-treated patients. CONCLUSIONS Addition of interferon to the lamivudine regimen does not increase the effectiveness of the treatment. Considering the side effects of interferon treatment, this combination seems not to be convenient for anti-HBe-positive chronic hepatitis B.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The most important problem of the lamivudine therapy is the frequent development of drug resistance. Treatment of chronic hepatitis B patients resistant to lamivudin remains to be established. We investigated in this study the efficacy of interferon therapy for breakthrough infection to combination therapy with interferon and lamivudine. METHODS Interferon therapy was applied to nine patients who experienced HBV DNA breakthrough with ALT elevation for at least three months during the lamivudine treatment, which was given in combination with interferon for the first six months. These patients were compared with 10 patients who developed breakthrough but were not given interferon. All the patients continued to receive lamivudine. RESULTS Of the nine patients who were given interferon, two lost HBV DNA and had normal ALT after six months of treatment. ALT levels returned to normal in two patients who had no virological response. Of those patients not given interferon, none lost HBV DNA, but three had normal ALT at the end of the same duration of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS The patients with breakthrough infection during lamivudine treatment, which was combined with interferon at the beginning, may benefit from another cycle of interferon treatment.

Abstract
The etiology of functional dyspepsia is not known. The objective of the present study was to determine the characteristics of functional dyspepsia in Western Turkey. We divided 900 patients with functional dyspepsia into three subgroups according to symptoms: ulcer-like (UL), 321 (35.6%), motility disorder-like (ML), 281 (31.2%), and the combination (C) of these symptoms, 298 (33.1%). All patients were submitted to endoscopic evaluation, with two biopsies taken from the cardia and corpus, and four from the antrum of the stomach. All biopsy samples were studied for Helicobacter pylori (Hp) density, chronic inflammation, activity, intestinal metaplasia, atrophy, and the presence of lymphoid aggregates by histological examination. One antral biopsy was used for the rapid urease test. Tissue cagA status was determined by PCR from an antral biopsy specimen by a random sampling method. We also determined the serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and gastrin by the same method. Data were analyzed statistically by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and by analysis of variance. Hp and cagA positivity was significantly higher in the UL subgroup than in the others. The patients in the ML subgroup had the lowest Hp and cagA positivity and Hp density. The ML subgroup also showed the lowest level of Hp-induced inflammation among all subgroups. The serum levels of TNF-alpha and gastrin did not reveal any difference between groups. Our findings show a poor association of Hp with the ML subgroup of functional dyspepsia, but a stronger association with the UL and C subgroups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND TT virus (TTV) DNA has been found in a large proportion of patients with different forms of non-A-G hepatitis, however the clinical importance is unclear. We aimed to determine the genotypes of TTV isolates found in blood donors and different patient groups from the western part of Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS TT DNA was investigated in serum samples of 91 volunteer blood donors (BD), 105 thalassemia (TH) patients, ten patients with fulminant hepatitis (FH) and 16 hemodialysis (HD) patients by heminested PCR using primers NG059, NG061 and NG063 from the ORF1 region. 39 isolates were genotyped by analyzing the partial sequence of ORF1. RESULTS TTV DNA was found in 75% of HD, 80% of FH, 61% of TH patients and in 51.6% of BD. Among the sequenced isolates, 14 (35.9%) belonged to genotype 1 (G1) and 25 (64.1%) belonged to genotype 2 (G2). Among the G2 sequences, 22 were grouped as G2c. CONCLUSION TTV infection was common in the population studied, even with moderately sensitive primers. G2 was the major genotype of the studied population without any significant differences in distribution between various patient groups and BD.
