Abstract
OBJECTIVES Access to health services has received increasing attention, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) includes 'availability' as one of the indicators to evaluate cancer screening. Evaluating, monitoring, and decision-making on cancer screening depends on systematic quantitative evidence on access to cancer screening, but indicators are currently inconsistently, if they are reported at all. This can be improved by developing systematic indicators for evaluating and reporting access to cancer screening. This requires a thorough understanding of current indicators of access to cancer screening. STUDY DESIGN Scoping review. METHODS We completed a scoping review of studies on access to cancer screening services from 2013 to 2022. The relevant indicators were extracted, quantified, and then matched to two widely used frameworks: a universal five-dimensional conceptual framework for access to healthcare ('U5D') and a cancer-specific framework/list on the availability/use of screening indicators endorsed by the IARC. RESULTS A total of 331 studies on access to cancer screening services were included. Based on the U5D framework, publications from supply side reported approachability (number of publications = 16), acceptability (6), availability and accommodation (44), affordability (30), and appropriateness (11); among this process, 17 sub-indicators were identified. Correspondingly, publications from demand side reported ability to perceive (170), ability to seek (85), ability to reach (58), ability to pay (59), and ability to engage (2); 26 sub-indicators were identified. More macroscopically, the publications of the IARC-endorsed indicators reported availability of policies and guidelines for screening (13), type of screening provided (3), extent of population coverage and participation rates (76), and demographic/behavioural related considerations (167). By integrating the universal and cancer-specific frameworks, a new adapted framework was proposed. CONCLUSIONS This study identified and collated indicators for evaluating access to cancer screening services, and determined the gaps in the current application of various indicators. The findings are anticipated to facilitate further development of an evaluation indicator system for access to cancer screening services.

Abstract
Logic-gated engineered cells are an emerging therapeutic modality that can take advantage of molecular profiles to focus medical interventions on specific tissues in the body. However, the increased complexity of these engineered systems may pose a challenge for prediction and optimization of their behavior. Here we describe the design and testing of a flow cytometry-based screening system to rapidly select functional inhibitory receptors from a pooled library of candidate constructs. In proof-of-concept experiments, this approach identifies inhibitory receptors that can operate as NOT gates when paired with activating receptors. The method may be used to generate large datasets to train machine learning models to better predict and optimize the function of logic-gated cell therapeutics.

Abstract
Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) is a broadly used dynamical measurement used to characterize a wide range of magnetic materials. Applied research and development on magnetic thin film materials is growing rapidly alongside a growing commercial appetite for magnetic memory and computing technologies. The ability to execute high-quality, fast FMR surveys of magnetic thin films is needed to meet the demanding throughput associated with rapid materials exploration and quality control. Here, we implement optimal Bayesian experimental design software developed by [McMichael et al. J. Res. Natl. Inst. Stand. Technol. 126, 126002 (2021)] in a vector network analyzer-FMR setup to demonstrate an unexplored opportunity to accelerate FMR measurements. A systematic comparison is made between the optimal Bayesian measurement and the conventional measurement. Reduced uncertainties in the linewidth and resonance frequency ranging from 40% to 60% are achieved with the Bayesian implementation for the same measurement duration. In practical terms, this approach reaches a target uncertainty of ±5 MHz for the linewidth and ±1 MHz for the resonance frequency in 2.5× less time than the conventional approach. As the optimal Bayesian approach only decreases random errors, we evaluate how large systematic errors may limit the full advantage of the optimal Bayesian approach. This approach can be used to deliver gains in measurement speed by a factor of 3 or more and as a software add-on has the flexibility to be added on to any FMR measurement system to accelerate materials discovery and quality control measurements, alike.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aimed to establish a mouse model of Graves' disease (GD) with Graves' orbitopathy (GO; GD + GO) that can represent the clinical disease characteristics. METHODS A eukaryotic expression plasmid of insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) α subunit (pcDNA3.1/IGF-1Rα) and a thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) A subunit plasmid (pcDNA3.1/TSHR-289) were injected in female BALB/c mice followed by immediate electroporation to induce a GD + GO model. Grouping was performed according to the frequency of injection (2- to 4-week intervals) and type of injected plasmids: T: pcDNA3.1/TSHR-289( +), I: pcDNA3.1/IGF-1Rα( +), or co-injection T + I: pcDNA3.1/TSHR-289( +) and pcDNA3.1/IGF-1Rα( +). Serum TSH, T4, TSAb, TSBAb, body weight, and blood glucose levels were evaluated. Thyroid 99mTcO4- imaging and retrobulbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed, and bilateral eye muscle volumes were measured. Immunohistochemistry and hematoxylin-eosin staining were performed on the relevant tissues, and semi-quantitative analysis was performed. RESULTS A total of 60% of mice (3/5, one mouse died) in the T group developed GD + GO. In the T + I group, 83.3% of mice (5/6) developed GD + GO. Mice in the I group did not develop GD. Compared with the control group, serum T4, TSAb, and TSBAb of the mice in the GD + GO model groups were increased to varying degrees (P < 0.05), and serum TSH and body weight were significantly lower compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The thyroid uptake capacity of 99mTcO4- and the volume of eye muscle of mice in the GD + GO group were significantly higher compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The thyroid and retrobulbar muscles of these mice showed varying inflammatory infiltration and interstitial muscle edema. The severity of GD + GO in the co-injection group was not related to injection frequency; however, GD and ocular signs in co-injection mice were more severe compared to the T group. CONCLUSIONS We successfully induced a GD + GO mouse model by a repeated co-injection of pcDNA3.1/IGF-1Rα and pcDNA3.1/TSHR-289 plasmids. Injection of pcDNA3.1/IGF-1Rα alone failed to induce GD. Co-injection of two plasmids induced more severe GD + GO than pcDNA3.1/TSHR-289( +) alone.

Abstract
Microquasars are laboratories for the study of jets of relativistic particles produced by accretion onto a spinning black hole. Microquasars are near enough to allow detailed imaging of spatial features across the multiwavelength spectrum. The recent extension measurement of the spatial morphology of a microquasar, SS 433, to TeV gamma rays1 localizes the acceleration of electrons at shocks in the jet far from the black hole2. V4641 Sagittarii (V4641 Sgr) is a similar binary system with a black hole and B-type main-sequence companion star and has an orbit period of 2.8 days (refs. 3,4). It stands out for its super-Eddington accretion5 and for its radio jet, which is one of the fastest superluminal jets in the Milky Way. Previous observations of V4641 Sgr did not report gamma-ray emission6. Here we report TeV gamma-ray emission from V4641 Sgr that reveals particle acceleration at similar distances from the black hole as SS 433. Furthermore, the gamma-ray spectrum of V4641 Sgr is among the hardest TeV spectra observed from any known gamma-ray source and is detected above 200 TeV. Gamma rays are produced by particles, either electrons or protons, of higher energies. Because energetic electrons lose energy more quickly the higher their energy, such a spectrum either very strongly constrains the electron-production mechanism or points to the acceleration of high-energy protons. This suggests that large-scale jets from microquasars could be more common than previously expected and that they could be a notable source of galactic cosmic rays7-9.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of incisional hernia surgery is to achieve the restoration of abdominal wall anatomical and physiological functions. This study aims to investigate the impact of abdominal wall reconstruction on abdominal muscle alterations by measuring the preoperative and postoperative changes in abdominal wall muscles in patients undergoing incisional hernia repair. METHODS For patients undergoing open incisional hernia abdominal wall reconstruction, preoperative and postoperative abdominal CT scans were analyzed at a minimum of 3 months post-surgery. 3D Slicer software was utilized for measuring preoperative and postoperative changes in abdominal cavity volume, abdominal muscle volume, as well as muscle volume, cross-sectional area, and abdominal circumference at specific levels. The acquired data were subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS software. RESULTS A total of 40 patients meeting the inclusion criteria underwent open incisional hernia repair surgery. Some of these patients required component separation technique (CST) due to the larger size of the hernia sac. The abdominal muscles surrounding the hernia ring were defined as the "damaged group," while the remaining abdominal muscles were defined as the "undamaged group." Measurements revealed a significant increase in the volume of rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles in the damaged group. Similarly, there was a corresponding increase in the volume of rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles in the undamaged group. CONCLUSIONS After abdominal wall reconstruction in incisional hernia patients, not only is their anatomical structure restored, but the overall biomechanical integrity of the abdominal wall is also repaired. The damaged muscles are subjected to renewed loading, leading to the reversal of disuse atrophy and an increase in muscle volume.

Abstract
The SPARC tokamak is a high-field, Bt0 ∼12 T, medium-sized, R0 = 1.85 m, tokamak that is presently under construction in Devens, MA, led by Commonwealth Fusion Systems. It will be used to de-risk the high-field tokamak path to a fusion power plant and demonstrate the commercial viability of fusion energy. SPARC's first campaign plan is to achieve Qfus > 1 using an ICRF-heated, <10 MW, high current, Ip ∼ 8.5 MA, L-mode fueled by D-T gas injection, and its second campaign will investigate H-mode operations in D-D. To facilitate plasma control and scientific learning, a targeted set of ∼50 plasma diagnostics are being designed and built for operation during these campaigns. While nearly all diagnostics are based on established techniques, the pace of deployment, relative to the first plasma, and the harshness of the thermal, electromagnetic, and radiation environment are unprecedented for medium-sized tokamaks. An overview of the SPARC diagnostic set is given, providing context to further details communicated by the SPARC team in companion publications that are system-specific. The system engineering philosophy for SPARC diagnostics is outlined, and the design and engineering verification process for components inside and outside the primary vacuum boundary are described. Diagnostics are mounted directly to the vacuum vessel as well as housed within a series of eight midplane and 24 off-midplane replaceable port plugs. With limited exceptions, signal conditioning, digitization electronics and cameras as well as lasers and microwave sources are localized to a series of five Diagnostic Lab spaces, totaling ∼350 m2, located >15 m from the center of the tokamak, on the other side of a 2.4 m concrete shielding wall. A series of 31 large-scale penetrations have been included in the SPARC Tokamak Hall to facilitate integration of early campaign diagnostics and to provide upgradability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Programmed death receptor ligand 1 (PD-L1) tumor proportion score (TPS) and tumor mutational burden (TMB) are key predictive biomarkers for immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) efficacy in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Data on their variation across multiple samples are limited. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with NSCLC and multiple PD-L1 TPS and/or TMB assessments were included. Clinicopathologic and genomic data were analyzed according to PD-L1 and TMB variation. RESULTS In total, 402 PD-L1 sample pairs and 413 TMB sample pairs were included. Concordance between pairs was moderate for PD-L1 (ρ = 0.53, P < 0.0001) and high for TMB (ρ = 0.80, P < 0.0001). Shorter time between biopsies correlated with higher concordance in PD-L1, but not in TMB. Major increases (ΔTPS ≥ +50%) and decreases (ΔTPS ≤ -50%) in PD-L1 were observed in 9.7% and 8.0% of cases, respectively. PD-L1, but not TMB, decreased with intervening ICI (P = 0.02). Acquired copy number loss of CD274, PDCD1LG2, and JAK2 were associated with major decrease in PD-L1 (q < 0.05). Among patients with multiple PD-L1 assessments before ICI, cases where all samples had a PD-L1 ≥1%, compared to cases with at least one sample with PD-L1 <1% and another with PD-L1 ≥1%, achieved improved objective response rate and progression-free survival (PFS). Among patients with at least one PD-L1 <1% and one ≥1% before ICI, cases where the most proximal sample was PD-L1 ≥1% had longer median PFS compared to cases where the most proximal PD-L1 was <1%. Among patients with multiple TMB assessments before ICI, patients with a TMB ≥10 mut/Mb based on the most recent assessment, as compared to those with a TMB <10 mut/Mb, achieved improved PFS and overall survival to ICI; instead, no differences were observed when patients were categorized using the oldest TMB assessment. CONCLUSIONS Despite intrapatient concordance in PD-L1 and TMB, variation in these biomarkers can influence ICI outcomes, warranting consideration for reassessment before ICI initiation when feasible.

Abstract
Neutron measurement is the primary tool in the SPARC tokamak for fusion power (Pfus) monitoring, research on the physics of burning plasmas, validation of the neutronics simulation workflows, and providing feedback for machine protection. A demanding target uncertainty (10% for Pfus) and coverage of a wide dynamic range (>8 orders of magnitude going up to 5 × 1019 n/s), coupled with a fast-track timeline for design and deployment, make the development of the SPARC neutron diagnostics challenging. Four subsystems are under design that exploit the high flux of direct DT and DD plasma neutrons emanating from a shielded opening in a midplane diagnostic port. The systems comprise a set of ∼15 flux monitors, mainly ionization chambers and proportional counters for measurement of the neutron yield rate, two independent foil activation systems for measurement of the neutron fluence, a spectrometric radial neutron camera for poloidal profiling of the plasma emissivity, and a high-resolution magnetic proton recoil spectrometer for measurement of the core neutron spectrum. Together, the four systems ensure redundancy of sensors and methods and aim to provide high resolutions of time (10 ms), space (∼7 cm), and energy (<2% at 14 MeV). This paper presents the broader objectives behind the preliminary design of the SPARC neutron diagnostics and discusses the ongoing studies on neutronics, detector comparisons, prototyping, and integration with the unique infrastructure of SPARC. Engineering details of the four subsystems and the concepts for in situ neutron calibration are also highlighted.

Abstract
A magnetic proton recoil (MPR) neutron spectrometer is being designed for SPARC, a high magnetic field (BT = 12 T), compact (R0 = 1.85 m, a = 0.57 m) tokamak currently under construction in Devens, MA, USA. MPR neutron spectrometers are versatile tools for making high fidelity ab initio calibrated measurements of fusion neutron flux spectra and have been used to infer fusion power, ion temperature, fuel ion ratio, and suprathermal fuel populations at several high performance fusion experiments. The performance of an MPR neutron spectrometer is in large part determined by the design of the magnetic field, which disperses and focuses recoil protons. This article details the ion optical design of a high-resolution MPR neutron spectrometer, including the amelioration of image aberrations due to nonlinear effects. An optimized design is presented that achieves ion optical energy resolution δE/E < 1% and focal plane properties that enable straightforward integration with the hodoscope detector array.

Observation of New Charmonium or Charmoniumlike States in B^{+}→D^{*±}D^{∓}K^{+} Decays. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 133:131902. Abstract
A study of resonant structures in B^{+}→D^{*+}D^{-}K^{+} and B^{+}→D^{*-}D^{+}K^{+} decays is performed, using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energies of sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. A simultaneous amplitude fit is performed to the two channels with contributions from resonances decaying to D^{*-}D^{+} and D^{*+}D^{-} states linked by C parity. This procedure allows the C parities of resonances in the D^{*±}D^{∓} mass spectra to be determined. Four charmonium or charmoniumlike states are observed decaying into D^{*±}D^{∓}: η_{c}(3945), h_{c}(4000), χ_{c1}(4010), and h_{c}(4300), with quantum numbers J^{PC} equal to 0^{-+}, 1^{+-}, 1^{++}, and 1^{+-}, respectively. At least three of these states have not been observed previously. In addition, the existence of the T_{c[over ¯]s[over ¯]0}^{*}(2870)^{0} and T_{c[over ¯]s[over ¯]1}^{*}(2900)^{0} resonances in the D^{-}K^{+} mass spectrum, already observed in the B^{+}→D^{+}D^{-}K^{+} decay, is confirmed in a different production channel.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sexual minorities may be more vulnerable to mental disorders. Previous studies have found associations between diet and depression, but no studies have focused on the interaction between nutrition-related parameters and sexual orientation regarding depression. This study aims to explore the interaction between nutrition-related parameters and sexual orientation regarding depression. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis using NHANES 2007-2016 data. METHODS This study utilized data from NHANES 2007-2016, with 11,065 participants involved. Nutrition-related parameters were evaluated using the healthy eating index-2015 (HEI-2015) and the dietary inflammation index (DII), while depression was obtained through Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Logistic regression and stratified analysis of subgroups were used in this study. RESULTS Compared to those who consumed healthy and anti-inflammatory diets, the ORs for depression in groups consuming unhealthy and pro-inflammatory diets were 1.366 (95%CI:1.073,1.738) and 1.652 (95%CI:1.345,2.028), respectively. Sexual minorities have a higher risk of depression than heterosexuals. There is an interaction effect (P = 0.037) between HEI-2015 and sexual orientation on depression, while it was not found in DII. Subgroup analysis indicated that the interaction between sexual orientation and HEI-2015 persisted in males (P = 0.024), but not in females. CONCLUSION Both diet and sexual orientation had impacts on depression. There was an interaction between HEI-2015 and sexual orientation on depression, and this association was different by gender. Sexual minorities who are Gay/lesbian, Bisexual, and Something else are at higher risk for depression, and adopting healthy eating patterns and anti-inflammatory diets that are consistent with the recommendations of the USDA may appropriately reduce the risk of depression.

Abstract
The causes and characteristics of gut microbiota abnormalities and whether microbiota manipulation can prevent atherosclerosis in the postmenopausal stage remain to be determined. Aortic oestrogen receptor expression, histological changes and gut microbiota in women before and after menopause were detected. Serum oestrogen levels, systemic inflammation, intestinal oestrogen receptor expression and histological changes, atherosclerosis, and gut microbiota in low density lipoprotein deletion (LDLR-∕-) female mice before and after ovariectomy were tested. This study examined aortic oestrogen receptor expression, histological changes, and gut microbiota in women before and after menopause, and tested serum oestrogen levels, systemic inflammation, intestinal oestrogen receptor expression, histological changes, atherosclerosis, and gut microbiota in low-density lipoprotein receptor knockout (LDLR-∕-) female mice before and after ovariectomy. We demonstrated that the downregulation of oestrogen and oestrogen receptors after menopause promotes gut microbiota disturbance in both women and female mice. We found that gut microbiota disturbance amplifies the intestinal barrier damage and aggravates systemic inflammation, thereby promoting atherosclerosis in female mice. Faecal microbiota transplantation and antibiotics inhibit the proinflammatory properties of gut microbiota and prevent atherosclerosis by reducing intestinal barrier damage in postmenopausal mice. Together, our study highlights the causes of gut microbiota disturbances and the role of microbiota manipulation in preventing atherosclerosis in postmenopausal stage.

Predictive model for postoperative unrecovered olfactory function in CRSwNP patients with olfactory disorder. Rhinology 2024:3210. Abstract
BACKGROUND Olfactory disorder (OD) is a prevalent and challenging symptom in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). This study aims to investigate the risk factors and develop a predictive model for poor olfactory prognosis in CRSwNP patients with OD after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). METHOD Seventy-eight CRSwNP patients with OD who underwent ESS were enrolled. Preoperative and 6-month-postoperative olfactory function were assessed using Sniffin' Sticks. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves were constructed to set the cutoff points. Risk factors were determined by logistic models. A power analysis was conducted to evaluate the sample size. RESULTS Overall, 66.7% of CRSwNP patients had unrecovered olfaction after surgery. Patients with unrecovered olfaction displayed higher preoperative threshold-discrimination-identification (TDI) score, lower Questionnaire for Olfactory Disorders-Negative Statements (QOD-NS) score, lower total olfactory cleft score (TOCS), and fewer tissue eosinophils than those of the improved/recovered group. QOD-NS≤5.0, preoperative TOCS≤4.5 and tissue eosinophil count≤8.3 were independent risk factors for unrecovered olfaction. Based on these variables, a predictive model was developed. The area under the ROC curve for the model was 0.845, and the optimal cutoff value was 2.0 points, with a sensitivity of 82.7% and specificity of 80.8%. CONCLUSIONS Low levels of QOD-NS score (preoperative), TOCS (preoperative) and tissue eosinophil count are independent risk factors for short-term unrecovered olfaction in CRS patients with OD postoperatively. The predictive model developed here is practical and convenient for the early identification of poor prognosis of OD, enabling early additional intervention.

[Safety and efficacy analysis of a varicose vein sealant kit in the treatment of great saphenous vein dysfunction]. ZHONGHUA YI XUE ZA ZHI 2024; 104:3334-3341. [PMID: 39266498 DOI: 10.3760/cma.j.cn112137-20231208-01323] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 09/14/2024]
Abstract
Objective: To investigate the safety and efficacy of a varicose vein sealant kit in the treatment of great saphenous vein dysfunction. Methods: It was a randomized controlled trial. A total of 180 patients with great saphenous vein dysfunction were enrolled prospectively, and scheduled for surgical treatment in 9 hospitals, including the Second Affiliated Hospital of Naval Medical University, Shanghai Oriental Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University, Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University, the First Hospital of Hebei Medical University, Ganzhou People's Hospital, Shanxi Bethune Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, and Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Xiamen University, from June to October 2022. Using a random number table method, the subjects were divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 90 cases in each group. The patients of experimental group received treatment with varicose vein sealant kit, while the patients of control group received radiofrequency ablation. The main outcome measure was the complete closure rate of the great saphenous vein in both groups of patients 3 months after surgery. The secondary outcome measures were the complete closure rate of the great saphenous vein in both groups of patients immediately after surgery and 6 months after surgery, the operation time for closing the main trunk of the great saphenous vein, pain score, venous clinical severity score (VCSS), Aberdeen varicose veins questionnaire (AVVQ) at different times before and after surgery, and the incidence of complications in both groups of patients. The non inferiority threshold for the two treatment methods is set at "-10.00%". Results: A total of 177 patients were ultimately enrolled. There were 89 cases in the experimental group, including 38 males and 51 females, with a median age [M (Q1, Q3)] of 59.7(49.6, 66.7) years, and 88 cases in the control group, including 30 males and 58 females, with a median age of 57.2(46.9, 65.9) years. A total of 174 patients completed a 3-month follow-up, and 167 patients completed a 6-month follow-up. The closure time of the main saphenous vein in the experimental group was (22.1±11.1) min, which was longer than the control group, which was (18.7±9.8) min (P=0.031). The complete closure rate of the great saphenous vein immediately after surgery in both the experimental group and the control group was 100%. The complete closure rates of the great saphenous vein at 3 months after surgery were 98.8% (85/86) and 98.9% (87/88), respectively. The lower limit of the 95%CI for the difference between the two groups was -3.19%, which was greater than the non-inferiority threshold of -10.00% (non-inferiority P<0.001). The complete closure rates of the great saphenous vein at 6 months after surgery were 97.6% (81/83) and 100% (84/84), the lower limit of the 95%CI for the difference between the two groups was -5.71%, which was greater than the non-inferiority threshold of -10.00% (non-inferiority P<0.001). The immediate pain scores after complete anesthesia awakening of the experimental group and the control group were both 1.0 (0, 2.0), with no statistically significant difference (P=0.365). The incidence of bruising in the experimental group and the control group one week after surgery was 61.2% (52/85) and 67.1% (57/85), respectively, with no statistically significant difference (P=0.181). There was no statistically significant difference in VCSS and AVVQ scores between groups before surgery and at 1, 3, and 6 months after surgery (all P>0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of complications such as deep vein thrombosis, phlebitis, pain, and subcutaneous hematoma in the lower limbs 3 months after surgery (all P>0.05). Conclusion: The varicose vein sealant kit is safe and effective in treating great saphenous vein dysfunction, and can achieve a complete closure rate of great saphenous vein that is not inferior to traditional radiofrequency ablation.

[Comparison of horizontal plane auditory spatial discrimination abilities and testing methods in patients with symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss]. ZHONGHUA ER BI YAN HOU TOU JING WAI KE ZA ZHI = CHINESE JOURNAL OF OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY HEAD AND NECK SURGERY 2024; 59:922-927. Abstract
Objective: To evaluate auditory spatial discrimination capabilities in patients with mild to moderately severe symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and to compare the impact of different psychophysical testing methods on Minimum Audible Angle (MAA) and test duration. Methods: A total of 105 symmetrical SNHL patients aged from 18 to 60 years old were enrolled from April to July 2023, including 56 males and 49 females. They were divided into three groups based on PTA: mild, moderate, and moderately severe hearing loss, with 35 individuals in each group. Additionally, a control group of 35 individuals with normal hearing was tested, including 18 males and 17 females. Participants underwent four distinct psychophysical discrimination tests: the block up-down, 1-up/1-down, 1-up/2-down, and 1-up/3-down procedures. We recorded the MAA and test duration for each. We employed repeated measures of ANOVA to compare the MAA and test duration across different methods and groups, and Pearson's correlation to assess the relationship between MAA and degree of hearing loss. Results: MAA of sound localization in patients with symmetrical SNHL was significantly positively correlated with the degree of hearing loss (r=0.59, P<0.01). Significant deterioration in MAA was observed as hearing loss progressed to the moderate level (PTA≥35 dBHL, P<0.01). The testing methods significantly influenced MAA and testing duration (F=24.02, P<0.01; F=75.56, P<0.01) and the 1-up/1-down method was the quickest, averaging only (0.69±0.32) mins. Conclusions: The horizontal plane auditory spatial discrimination abilities in patients with symmetrical SNHL is impaired progressively with increasing hearing loss, notably beyond moderate hearing loss levels. Different psychophysical methods influence both MAA and test duration, the quicker 1-up/1-down method is recommended for assessing MAA in symmetrical SNHL patients.

Abstract
This Letter presents results from a combination of searches for Higgs boson pair production using 126-140 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector. At 95% confidence level (CL), the upper limit on the production rate is 2.9 times the standard model (SM) prediction, with an expected limit of 2.4 assuming no Higgs boson pair production. Constraints on the Higgs boson self-coupling modifier κ_{λ}=λ_{HHH}/λ_{HHH}^{SM}, and the quartic HHVV coupling modifier κ_{2V}=g_{HHVV}/g_{HHVV}^{SM}, are derived individually, fixing the other parameter to its SM value. The observed 95% CL intervals are -1.2<κ_{λ}<7.2 and 0.6<κ_{2V}<1.5, respectively, while the expected intervals are -1.6<κ_{λ}<7.2 and 0.4<κ_{2V}<1.6 in the SM case. Constraints obtained for several interaction parameters within Higgs effective field theory are the strongest to date, offering insights into potential deviations from SM predictions.

Strong and Weak CP Tests in Sequential Decays of Polarized Σ^{0} Hyperons. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 133:101902. [PMID: 39303247 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.133.101902] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/10/2024] [Revised: 07/16/2024] [Accepted: 08/07/2024] [Indexed: 09/22/2024]
Abstract
The J/ψ, ψ(3686)→Σ^{0}Σ[over ¯]^{0} processes and subsequent decays are studied using the world's largest J/ψ and ψ(3686) data samples collected with the BESIII detector. The parity-violating decay parameters of the decays Σ^{0}→Λγ and Σ[over ¯]^{0}→Λ[over ¯]γ, α_{Σ^{0}}=-0.0017±0.0021±0.0018 and α[over ¯]_{Σ^{0}}=0.0021±0.0020±0.0022, are measured for the first time. The strong CP symmetry is tested in the decays of the Σ^{0} hyperons for the first time by measuring the asymmetry A_{CP}^{Σ}=α_{Σ^{0}}+α[over ¯]_{Σ^{0}}=(0.4±2.9±1.3)×10^{-3}. The weak CP test is performed in the subsequent decays of their daughter particles Λ and Λ[over ¯]. Also for the first time, the transverse polarizations of the Σ^{0} hyperons in J/ψ and ψ(3686) decays are observed with opposite directions, and the ratios between the S-wave and D-wave contributions of the J/ψ, ψ(3686)→Σ^{0}Σ[over ¯]^{0} decays are obtained. These results are crucial to understand the decay dynamics of the charmonium states and the production mechanism of the Σ^{0}-Σ[over ¯]^{0} pairs.

Search for Time-Dependent CP Violation in D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}π^{0} Decays. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 133:101803. Abstract
A measurement of time-dependent CP violation in D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}π^{0} decays using a pp collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment in 2012 and from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.7 fb^{-1}, is presented. The initial flavor of each D^{0} candidate is determined from the charge of the pion produced in the D^{*}(2010)^{+}→D^{0}π^{+} decay. The decay D^{0}→K^{-}π^{+}π^{0} is used as a control channel to validate the measurement procedure. The gradient of the time-dependent CP asymmetry ΔY in D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}π^{0} decays is measured to be ΔY=(-1.3±6.3±2.4)×10^{-4}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, which is compatible with CP conservation.

Studies of the Energy Dependence of Diboson Polarization Fractions and the Radiation-Amplitude-Zero Effect in WZ Production with the ATLAS Detector. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 133:101802. Abstract
This Letter presents the first study of the energy dependence of diboson polarization fractions in WZ→ℓνℓ^{'}ℓ^{'}(ℓ,ℓ^{'}=e,μ) production. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. Two fiducial regions with an enhanced presence of events featuring two longitudinally polarized bosons are defined. A nonzero fraction of events with two longitudinally polarized bosons is measured with an observed significance of 5.3 standard deviations in the region with 100 200 GeV, where p_{T}^{Z} is the transverse momentum of the Z boson. This Letter also reports the first study of the radiation-amplitude-zero effect. Events with two transversely polarized bosons are analyzed for the ΔY(ℓ_{W}Z) and ΔY(WZ) distributions defined respectively as the rapidity difference between the lepton from the W boson decay and the Z boson and the rapidity difference between the W boson and the Z boson. Significant suppression of events near zero is observed in both distributions. Unfolded ΔY(ℓ_{W}Z) and ΔY(WZ) distributions are also measured and compared to theoretical predictions.

Abstract
Salmonella is an important foodborne pathogen and one of the main causes of diarrhea. Every year, about 550 million people suffer from diarrhea due to Salmonella infection, of which about 230 000 die. It has become a major global public safety issue. The application fields of Salmonella detection involve food safety, water quality monitoring, animal husbandry, public health monitoring, and medical diagnosis. The detection requirements mainly come from three aspects: pathogen identification, serotype identification, drug resistance and virulence identification. In recent years, the detection technology for Salmonella has made rapid progress, especially the emergence and development of emerging molecular detection technologies, providing new perspectives for Salmonella detection in different scenarios. However, due to the diversity of Salmonella serotypes and the complexity of detection scenarios, existing detection technologies still have some pain points (such as long detection time, cumbersome operation steps, low scene adaptability, etc.). This article will elaborate on the application of several emerging molecular detection technologies with distinct characteristics, such as CRISPR Cas technology, digital PCR technology, sequencing technology, and microfluidic technology, in Salmonella detection. It aims to provide a reference for the development and improvement of Salmonella detection technology and the establishment of infection warning and control systems.

Anastomotic leak after manual circular stapled left-sided bowel surgery: analysis of technology-, disease-, and patient-related factors. BJS Open 2024; 8:zrae089. [PMID: 39441693 PMCID: PMC11498054 DOI: 10.1093/bjsopen/zrae089] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/05/2023] [Revised: 06/09/2024] [Accepted: 07/09/2024] [Indexed: 10/25/2024] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND Anastomotic leak rates after colorectal surgery remain high. In most left-sided colon and rectal resection surgeries, a circular stapler is utilized to create the primary bowel anastomosis. However, it remains unclear whether a relationship between circular stapler technology and anastomotic leak in left-sided colorectal surgery exists. METHODS A post-hoc analysis was conducted using a prospectively collected data set of patients from the 2017 European Society of Coloproctology snapshot audit who underwent elective left-sided resection (left hemicolectomy, sigmoid colectomy, or rectal resection) with a manual circular stapled anastomosis. Rates of anastomotic leak and unplanned intensive care unit stay in association with manual circular stapling were assessed. Patient-, disease-, geographical-, and surgeon-related factors as well as stapler brand were explored using multivariable regression models to identify predictors of adverse outcomes. RESULTS Across 3305 procedures, 8.0% of patients had an anastomotic leak and 2.1% had an unplanned intensive care unit stay. Independent predictors of anastomotic leak were male sex, minimal-access surgery converted to open surgery, and anastomosis height C11 (lower third rectum) (all P < 0.050). Independent predictors of unplanned intensive care unit stay were minimal-access surgery converted to open surgery and American Society of Anesthesiologists grade IV (all P < 0.050). Stapler device brand was not a predictor of anastomotic leak or unplanned intensive care unit stay in multivariable regression analysis. There were no differences in rates of anastomotic leak and unplanned intensive care unit stay according to stapler head diameter, geographical region, or surgeon experience. CONCLUSION In patients undergoing left-sided bowel anastomosis, choice of manual circular stapler, in terms of manufacturer or head diameter, is not associated with rates of anastomotic leak and unplanned intensive care unit stay.

Abstract
Epidemiologic studies have implicated the gut microbiota in acute kidney injury (AKI), but the causal relationship is unclear. Using Mendelian randomisation, we explored the causal role of gut microbiota in the development of acute kidney injury after excluding confounding and reverse causality. Mendel randomised (MR) study was conducted using data from intestinal microbiota and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) disease of acute kidney injury and the sequencing data of case-control study confirmed this finding. The summary statistics of intestinal microbiota (n = 13,266) conducted by MiBioGen Alliance was taken as the exposure, while the statistics of acute kidney injury obtained from FinnGen Alliance data (2,383 cases and 212,841 controls) were taken as the results. A total of 42 patients were included in this case-control study. Evidence for the protective causal associations of the genus Flavonifractor id.2059 with AKI was found in inverse variance weighting (odds ratio = 0.48 [95% confidence interval, 0.32-0.72]; P = 0.0003). Additionally, a case-control study showed that the relative abundance of the genus Flavonifractor id.2059 ( P = 0.0169) in septic non-AKI patients was higher than that in septic AKI patients. Compared with S-AKI patients who died within 28 days, the relative abundance of the genus Flavonifractor id.2059 in surviving patients was higher ( P = 0.0281). Phylogenetic analysis showed that OTU68 and HQ455040.1334-739 (genus Flavonifractor, Genetic similarity: 100%), as well as OTU2271 and LT598575.1365-770 (genus Pseudoflavonifractor, Genetic similarity: 100%), have closest genetic ties. Correlation analysis showed that the genus Flavonifractor id.2059 was related to the creatinine value (Spearman correlation: -0.379, P = 0.013). The present study demonstrates that the genus Flavonifractor id.2059 is associated with a reduced risk of AKI, revealing potential implications for the prevention and treatment of acute kidney injury.
