Abstract
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is characterised by its effects on the axial skeleton. The cervical spine is also vulnerable to the disease process. Our aim was to determine the frequency of radiologic changes to the cervical spine and their correlation with clinical variables. We also used the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Radiology Index (BASRI) system, which is one of the reliable scoring systems of radiography, to score the global radiologic changes to the cervical and lumbar spine and the hip joints in our AS cohort. There were 181 patients with anteroposterior and lateral full-flexion views on radiography of the cervical spine here included in the study. A radiologist examined the radiologic changes to all anatomical compartments of the cervical spine in detail and graded them according to the BASRI system. We used the clinical and demographic data of our AS cohort to determine their relation to the radiographic changes. Eighty-eight patients (48.6%) showed radiological changes to the cervical spine; to the discovertebral joint 35.9%; the apophyseal joint 26.0%; atlantoaxial articulation 22.1% (atlantoaxial subluxation 13.8%); the costovertebral joint 18.2%; and to the posterior ligamentous attachment 11.6%. Using the BASRI system, 73 patients (40.3%) showed radiologic changes to the cervical spine and were graded as score 1 (1.7%), 2 (22.7%), 3 (6.6%) or 4 (9.4%). Among those graded as normal by the BASRI system, 17 showed some changes the cervical spine, such as atlantoaxial joint subluxation or narrowing, and severe osteoporosis with no other radiographic changes. Current age, disease duration, inflammatory back pain and cervical symptoms were associated with the radiographic changes to the cervical spine. The BASRI-cervical spine score correlated with the BASRI-lumbar spine and hip joint score, sacroiliitis, disease duration, and duration of inflammatory back pain and cervical symptoms. Our data suggest that radiographic changes to the cervical spine are frequent in AS, and can be predicted in the patients with old age, long duration of disease and inflammatory back pain, and cervical symptoms. Also, the BASRI scoring system showed similar results as a detailed assessment of the cervical spine in our study.

Abstract
The last 2 decades have seen considerable advances in obstetric ultrasonography, which now forms part of routine prenatal care in most countries. Congenital anomalies often occur sporadically and unpredictably. The prenatal identification of an abnormal fetus allows the opportunity for prenatal counseling with a multidisciplinary team of experts, and a thorough discussion of pregnancy options. Furthermore, prenatal diagnosis can influence antepartum and intrapartum management, and permit the planning of the mode and site of delivery, thus ensuring optimal care of the fetus and the newborn. Prenatal surgical therapy can also be offered to fetuses with simple anatomic defects that have predictably devastating developmental consequences. This review discusses controversies regarding the accuracy, limitations and the roles of ultrasound in pregnancy.

Abstract
The yellow-pigmented bacterial strain causing green spot rot and death of layer was isolated from Porphyra dentata. This strain has been identified as Pseudomonas sp., harboring agarase, xylanase, and protease activity, as well as carboxymethyl-cellulase (CMCase). Using genomic DNA from the Pseudomonas sp. SK38 digested with Sau3AI and ligated into pBluescript II KS+, we isolated a cel gene encoding a CMCase in Pseudomonas sp. SK38. A 4.5-kb fragment was subcloned into pKR400. The structure of the cel9A gene consists of an open reading frame of 1,521 bp starting with a GTG start codon and ending with a TAG stop codon. It thus encodes 506 amino acid residues of a protein with a calculated molecular weight of 52,636 daltons plus a signal peptide of 22 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of the cel9A protein is similar to the same protein of Clostridium thermocellum. It contains, in particular, the two conserved regions of the glycoside hydrolase family 9. The apparent molecular mass of the Cel9A protein is 52 kDa as estimated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The enzyme is most active at pH 6-7 and an optimal temperature of around 30 degrees C.

Abstract
Bronchogenic cyst is noted shortly after birth or in early childhood and usually presents as a swelling or draining sinus in the presternal area. Its origin and pathogenesis can be explained as a developmental anomaly of the tracheobronchial buds from the primitive foregut. The patient was a 4-year-old boy with a child-fist-sized soft mass over his left scapula, which had been detected at birth and had been gradually growing. Grossly, it appeared to be a simple cyst with clear mucoid fluid. Histopathological study demonstrated a unilocular cyst composed of ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelia, interspersed goblet cells, smooth muscles, and mucous glands on the cyst wall, which are features compatible with cutaneous bronchogenic cyst.

Abstract
PURPOSE We evaluated the sonographic findings in epidermal inclusion cysts and related them to the pathologic findings. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the sonograms and pathology specimens of 24 patients with pathologically proven epidermal inclusion cysts. We evaluated the lesions for shape, size, internal echogenicity, posterior sound enhancement, and presence of color Doppler signals. We classified the masses into 5 sonographic types according to their internal echogenicity. The relationship between the sonographic types and the pathologic findings was examined. RESULTS The masses were ovoid or spherical in 17 cases (71%), lobulated in 5 (21%), and tubular in 2 (8%). The longest diameter ranged from 1 to 6 cm (mean, 3.1 cm). Twenty-three cases (96%) were associated with posterior sound enhancement. Color Doppler signals were absent in 20 cases, but some vascularity was noted in 4 ruptured epidermal cysts, in areas of granulation tissue. The most common sonographic type was a hypoechoic lesion with scattered echogenic reflectors (10 cases). Sonographic findings were related to the lamellation of keratin debris and the granulation tissue secondary to rupture. Most cases with a lobulated configuration (4 of 5) or color Doppler signals (4 of 4) were ruptured cysts. CONCLUSIONS Epidermal inclusion cysts most often appeared sonographically as a hypoechoic mass containing variable echogenic foci without color Doppler signals. Ruptured epidermal cysts, however, may have lobulated contours and show color Doppler signals, mimicking a solid mass.

Abstract
We report herein the results of the cross-cultural adaptation and validation into the Korean language of the parent's version of two health related quality of life instruments. The Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ) is a disease specific health instrument that measures functional ability in daily living activities in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). The Child Health Questionnaire (CHQ) is a generic health instrument designed to capture the physical and psychosocial well-being of children independently from the underlying disease. A total of 221 subjects were enrolled: 87 patients with JIA (18% systemic onset, 37% polyarticular onset, 12% extended oligoarticular subtype, and 33% persistent oligoarticular subtype) and 134 healthy children. The CHAQ clinically discriminated between healthy subjects and the four JIA subtypes of patients, with the JIA patients having a higher degree of disability, pain, and a lower overall well-being when compared to their healthy peers. Also the CHQ clinically discriminated between healthy subjects and JIA patients, with the JIA patients having a lower physical and psychosocial well-being when compared to their healthy peers. In conclusion the Korean version of the CHAQ-CHQ is a reliable, and valid tool for the functional, physical and psychosocial assessment of children with JIA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Excess visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is recognized as an important risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Several studies have reported less VAT in African Americans compared with whites. As little is known about the levels of VAT in Asians, we compared whole-body VAT in Asian Americans with European Americans. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES VAT was measured using whole-body multislice magnetic resonance imaging in 54 women (18 Asian Americans, 36 European Americans) and 53 men (19 Asian Americans, 34 European Americans) with body mass index (measured in kilograms per square meter) < 30. Data were analyzed by multiple regression modeling. RESULTS Asian American women had higher log-transformed VAT compared with European American women (p < 0.05), after adjusting for age and total body fat. There was a significant age by race interaction such that race differences in VAT were most evident over the age of 30 years. No differences in VAT could be detected between Asian American and European American men, even after adjusting for potential covariates, including total adiposity. DISCUSSION These data are the first to demonstrate higher amounts of VAT in healthy Asian Americans, a finding that suggests normative VAT values or standards derived from whites may not be applicable to Asians.

Abstract
Acute generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a rare, sometimes fatal, exudative form of psoriasis characterized by acute febrile pustular psoriasis. Unlike the adult forms, GPP in childhood tends to undergo a more benign course. It may resolve spontaneously with only supportive treatment, but may sometimes be life threatening and resistant to therapy. We report a case of GPP in 7-year-old girl treated successfully with dapsone.

Abstract
Aquifex aeolicus is the hyperthermophilic bacterium known, with growth-temperature maxima near 95 degrees C. The cel8Y gene, encoding a thermostable endoglucanase (Cel8Y) from Aquifex aeolicus VF5, was cloned into a vector for expression and expressed in Escherichia coli XL1-Blue. A clone of 1.7 kb fragment containing endoglucanase activity, designated pKYCY100, was sequenced and found to contain an ORF of 978 bp encoding a protein of 325 amino acid residues, with a calculated molecular mass of 38,831 Da. This endoglucanase was designated cel8Y gene. The endoglucanase has an 18-amino-acid signal peptide but not cellulose-binding domain. The endoglucanase of A. aeolicus VF5 had significant amino acid sequence similarities with endoglucanases from glycosyl hydrolase family 8. The predicted amino acid sequence of the Cel8Y protein was similar to that of CMCase of Cellulomonas uda, BcsC of Escherichia coli, CelY of Erwinia chrysanthemi, and CMCase of Acetobacter xylinum. The molecular mass of Cel8Y was calculated to be 36,750 Da, which is consistent with the value obtained from result of CMC-SDS-PAGE of the purified enzyme. Cel8Y was thermostable, exhibiting maximal activity at 80 degrees C and pH optima of 7.0 and with half-lives of 2 h at 100 degrees C, 4 h at 90 degrees C.

Abstract
Primary intestinal T-cell lymphoma is a rare disease entity, which is approximately 10% to 25% of intestinal lymphomas, and most of the lymphomas occur in the small intestine. We report here a case of a 56-year-old woman who has been suffering from chronic diarrhea and weight loss for 6 months. Abdominal CT scan and small bowel series showed diffuse wall thickening of the small bowel. Gastroscopic examination showed diffuse erythematous lesions on the esophagus and small gastric ulcerations on the antrum of the stomach, and colonoscopic examination also showed multiple punched-out ulcerations and erosions on the entire colon, including the sigmoid colon to the terminal ileum. Diffuse infiltration of CD 3 positive lymphoma cells was found on biopsy. The patient was diagnosed as primary intestinal T-cell lymphoma with diffuse involvement of the entire gastrointestinal tracts from the esophagus to the rectum. Although the patient received systemic combination chemotherapy and achieved partial response initially, the lymphoma relapsed repeatedly.

Abstract
PURPOSE The authors' goal was to assess the diagnostic accuracy and clinical effect of MRI compared with echocardiography and catheterization in the evaluation of cardiac defects with situs ambiguous. METHOD Twenty-two patients with visceral heterotaxy syndrome were included. RESULTS Because situs determined by the relation between the pulmonary artery and bronchi showed most predominantly a tendency toward lateralization, this was regarded as the standard reference of situs determination. For the purpose of this study, patients were classified as having right isomerism (n = 13) or left isomerism groups (n = 9). MRI has several advantages compared with echocardiography or cardiac angiography for examining patients with situs ambiguous. (1) The bronchial, pulmonary arterial, and splenic situs can be readily determined, and discrepancies (n = 2) can be assessed easily. (2) Venoatrial connections are adequately imaged. In particular, all types of total and partial anomalous pulmonary venous return are delineated, regardless of whether restrictions of pulmonary blood flow or pulmonary venous obstructions are involved (n = 4). The courses of vertical veins were easily identified, and the prearterial position was revealed in only one of seven right isomerisms with total anomalous pulmonary venous return. The drain pattern of the hepatic vein can be visualized using three-dimensional spatial information and is useful for total cavopulmonary connection design. (3) Associated complicated cardiac anomalies, particularly the size or peripheral stenosis of the pulmonary arteries, may be evaluated, and this information is useful for palliative shunt operations. CONCLUSION Because of its wide field of view and imaging, which is not restricted by associated anomalies, a thorough understanding of the cardiovascular anatomy of the situs ambiguous can be achieved using MRI, which is of considerable value in the surgical correction of this complicated anomaly. MRI can obviate or facilitate catheterization in these critically ill patients.

Abstract
p56(lck) is a lymphocyte-specific tyrosine kinase that plays an important role in both T-cell maturation and activation. We have developed a homogeneous assay in which p56(lck) catalyzes the transfer of the gamma-phosphate group from [gamma-(33)P]ATP to a biotinylated peptide substrate. The labeled peptide is then captured on a streptavidin-coated scintillation proximity assay (SPA) bead or imaging proximity bead. The SPA is counted in a microplate scintillation counter and the imaging proximity assay is counted in a charge-coupled device-based imaging system called LEADseekertrade mark, recently launched as a homogeneous imaging system by Amersham Pharmacia Biotech. We show, via time-dependence assays and inhibitor studies, that this assay can be performed in 1536-well microplate format using imaging proximity as the method of detection. The results compare favorably with the same assay performed in 384-well microplate format using both SPA and imaging proximity as the detection methods. From this study, we conclude that a kinase assay can be performed in 384- and 1536-well format using imaging as the detection method, with significant time savings over standard scintillation counting. In addition, we show cost saving advantages of 1536- over 384-well format in terms of reagent usage, higher throughput, and waste disposal.

Abstract
Unroofed coronary sinus is a rare cardiac anomaly in which communication occurs between the coronary sinus and the left atrium due to the partial or complete absence of the roof of the coronary sinus. It is usually associated with other cardiovascular anomalies, especially persistent left superior vena cava. It is often not discovered during cardiac catheterization without clinical suspicion. We report three cases of unroofed coronary sinus which were incidentally detected by magnetic resonance imaging.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our purpose was to evaluate the usefulness of early diastolic notch depth in predicting adverse perinatal outcome. STUDY DESIGN Uterine artery Doppler velocimetry is widely applied in predicting pregnancy outcomes. Recent studies of uterine artery early diastolic notch have demonstrated its usefulness as a marker for fetal well-being. The early diastolic notch represents the reflected blood flow of uteroplacental circulation. This study was carried out under the hypothesis that when early diastolic notch is present evaluating its depth plays a significant role in predicting poor pregnancy outcomes. Its ability to predict adverse perinatal outcomes was evaluated in 198 pregnant women with early diastolic notch after 28 weeks' gestation. RESULTS The incidence of adverse perinatal outcome (5-minute Apgar score <7, cesarean delivery because of fetal distress, admission to neonatal intensive care unit, fetal growth restriction, or perinatal death) was 90.5% when the notch index was </=0.70. When the notch index range was 0.70 to 0.79, 0.80 to 0.89, and >/=0.90, the respective incidences were 72.3%, 46. 9%, and 28.1%. CONCLUSION This study suggests that evaluating notch depth in the presence of early diastolic notch on uterine artery velocimetry during the third trimester would be a useful method for predicting adverse perinatal outcomes.

Abstract
Fetal nucleated red blood cells (nRBCs) are rare in maternal circulation, but their presence constitutes a potential source of non-invasive prenatal genetic diagnosis. This study was undertaken to establish a non-invasive prenatal genetic diagnosis method using isolated fetal nRBCs. A multi-step method including triple density gradient and magnetic activated cell sorting (MACS) using CD45 and CD71, cytospin centrifugation, K-B staining, and glycophorin A-immuno fluorescence in situ hybridization (GPA-immuno FISH) was performed. The study population included 65 patients from 8 to 41 weeks of gestation, and fetal nRBC was separated from all cases. The number of fetal nRBCs retrieved was 12.8 +/- 2.7 in 8 to 11 gestational weeks, 15.2 +/- 6.5 in 12 to 18 gestational weeks, 16.4 +/- 6.5 in 19 to 23 gestational weeks, 10.6 +/- 3.2 in 24 to 28 gestational weeks, and 5.5 +/- 1.9 in 35 to 41 gestational weeks: the mean number of nRBCs collected from 20 ml of maternal peripheral blood was 13.7 +/- 6.2. The highest value of yield was 45.6% from 12 to 18 weeks gestation. The fetal sex determination confirmed by amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling showed 100% sensitivity and 91.7% specificity for males; 91.7% sensitivity and 100% specificity for females. We showed that fetal cells can be reliably enriched from maternal blood and that they can be used for detecting specific chromosomes by FISH with a specificity superior to current non-invasive methods.

We describe a 54-year-old patient with an unusual localization of localized multiple glomus tumors. She had several nodules on the left mandibular area, lower lip, and anterior part of the buccal mucosa. A biopsy taken from the left mandibular area showed cystically dilated vessels lined by endothelial cells and a few outer layers of glomus cells in the dermis to subcutis. Localized multiple glomus tumors are rare, and both their facial and oral mucocal localization are extremely rare.

Abstract
Unexplained maternal serum-fetoprotein (MSAFP) elevation has been known to be associated with adverse obstetric outcomes, however it is not sufficiently useful as a screening test. This study was undertaken to determine whether uterine artery Doppler velocimetry could define a subset of patients with an elevated MSAFP level in whom complications of pregnancy might develop. The subjects included 179 women between 26 and 28 weeks' gestation with MSAFP > or = 2.5 multiples of the median, in whom either the presence of an early diastolic notch or a resistance index 0.6 was considered as an abnormal Doppler velocimetry finding. Those subjects who displayed abnormal Doppler velocimetry findings showed an increased incidence of preeclampsia, preterm birth, IUGR, and IUFD compared to those subjects with only elevated MSAFP (p < 0.05). No differences were observed in the incidence of LBW. Positive predictive values of adverse obstetric outcomes were significantly higher in the group having both elevated MSAFP and abnormal Doppler velocimetry compared to the group with only elevated MSAFP (p < 0.05). Uterine artery Doppler velocimetry in the second trimester can improve the value of unexplained MSAFP elevation in the prediction of adverse obstetric outcomes.

The purpose of this investigation was to define the role of elevation of the first ray in the pathogenesis of hallux rigidus by comparing patients with known hallux rigidus with a control population. We reviewed 264 lateral weightbearing radiographs from 81 patients with hallux rigidus, 50 asymptomatic volunteers, and 64 patients diagnosed with isolated Morton's neuroma. Results revealed that the mean values for elevation of the first ray in patients with mild or moderate hallux rigidus were nearly identical to those in the control group. Patients with advanced radiographic hallux rigidus had a slightly higher mean value for metatarsus primus elevatus. An average of nearly 8 mm of metatarsus primus elevatus is a normal finding in patients with hallux rigidus as well as in normal subjects. This investigation did not address the clinical outcome or biomechanical effects of a plantarflexion osteotomy of the first ray. However, on the basis of the finding that first ray elevation is normal, it seems unlikely that a plantarflexion osteotomy would have a role in the treatment of hallux rigidus.

Abstract
Clinically evident metastases of carcinomas to the thyroid gland are rare, particularly from a colorectal primary tumor. We present a case of colonic adenocarcinoma metastatic to the thyroid gland with histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings. A 68-year-old woman with a history of Dukes' stage B colon carcinoma presented a mass in the thyroid gland. The tumor was confirmed to be metastatic adenocarcinoma from the colon. The immunohistochemical findings demonstrated positive staining for cytokeratin 20, low-molecular-weight cytokeratin, villin and carcinoembryonic antigen, but stains were negative for cytokeratin 7 and thyroglobulin.

Abstract
To better understand regulation of eukaryotic protein synthesis, we studied cellular and viral mRNA translation in influenza virus-infected cells. Influenza virus infection results in a dramatic shut-off of cellular protein synthesis that is concomitant with selective viral mRNA translation. Earlier work showed that these events are mediated by viral and/or cellular factors binding to the 5' untranslated region (5' UTR) of viral mRNAs. To identify trans-acting cellular proteins responsible for selective viral protein synthesis, we employed the yeast three-hybrid system. Using the 5' UTR of the influenza virus nucleocapsid protein (NP) mRNA as bait, we identified the cellular RNA-recognition motif containing RNA-binding protein G-rich sequence factor 1 (GRSF-1) as a positive-acting translational regulatory factor. The in vivo yeast assay revealed GRSF-1 specifically bound to the NP 5' UTR but not select NP 5' UTR mutants or cellular RNA 5' UTRs. These data were confirmed by gel shift assays using recombinant GRSF-1. Importantly, recombinant GRSF-1 specifically stimulated translation of a NP 5' UTR-driven template in cell-free translation systems. Furthermore, translation efficiency of NP 5' UTR-driven templates was reduced markedly in GRSF-1-depleted HeLa cell extracts, but restored in GRSF-1-reconstituted extracts. GRSF-1 also stimulated translation of an NP 5' UTR-driven template in HeLa cell extracts that were depleted of essential factors by addition of RNA oligonucleotides representing the viral 5' UTR RNA. Taken together, these data document the functional demonstration of a cellular protein binding to influenza virus RNAs and, importantly, suggest that influenza virus may recruit GRSF-1 to the 5' UTR to ensure preferential translation of viral mRNAs in infected cells.

Abstract
The yeast three-hybrid system presents a valuable tool for detecting and analyzing RNA-protein interactions in vivo. A major drawback of the use of such a transcriptional reporter-based assay in a library screen is the frequent occurrence of false-positive results due to bait RNA-independent activation of the reporter gene. To minimize the isolation of false positives in three-hybrid library screens, we incorporated a rapid and simple procedure based on differential sensitivity to 5-fluoro-orotic acid. The technique effectively eliminates bait RNA-independent false positives and thus greatly enhances the efficiency of the yeast three-hybrid system.

Abstract
Two homogeneous proximity assays for tyrosine kinases, scintillation proximity assay (SPA) and homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence (HTRF), have been developed and compared. In both formats, the kinase assay was performed using biotinylated peptide substrate, ATP ([33P]ATP in the case of SPA), and tyrosine kinase in a 96-well assay format. After the kinase reaction was stopped, streptavidin-coated SPA beads or europium cryptate-labeled anti-phosphotyrosine antibody and streptavidin-labeled allophycocyanin were added as detection reagents for SPA or HTRF assays, respectively. Since the assay signal was detected only when the energy donor (radioactivity for SPA, Eu for HTRF) and the energy acceptor molecules (SPA beads for SPA, allophycocyanin for HTRF) were in close proximity, both assays required no wash or liquid transfer steps. This homogeneous ("mix-and-measure") nature allows these assays to be much simpler, more robust, and easier to automate than traditional protein kinase assays, such as a filter binding assay or ELISA. Both assays have been miniaturized to a 384-well format to reduce the assay volume, thereby saving the valuable screening samples as well as assay reagents, and automated using automated pipetting stations to increase the assay throughput. Several advantages and disadvantages for each assay are described.

Abstract
A homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence (HTRF) assay has been developed for human immunodeficiency viral (HIV) protease. The assay utilizes a peptide substrate, differentially labeled on either side of the scissile bond, to bring two detection components, streptavidin-cross-linked XL665 (SA/XL665) and a europium cryptate (Eu(K))-labeled antiphosphotyrosine antibody, into proximity allowing fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to occur. Cleavage of the doubly labeled substrate by HIV protease precludes complex formation, thereby decreasing FRET, and allowing enzyme activity to be measured. Potential substrates were evaluated by HTRF with the best results being obtained using (LCB)K4AVSQNbeta-NapPIVpYA(NH2) and Eu(K)-pY20 where the peptide titrated with an EC50 of 7.7 +/- 0.3 nM under optimized detection conditions. Using these HTRF detection conditions, HIV protease cleaved the substrate in 50 mM NaOAc, 150 mM KF, 0.05% Tween 20, pH 5.5, with apparent first-order kinetics with a Km of 37.8 +/- 8.7 microM and a kcat of 0.95 +/- 0.07 s-1. Examination of the first-order rate constant versus enzyme concentration suggested a Kd of 9.4 +/- 2.7 nM for the HIV protease monomer-dimer equilibrium. The HTRF assay was also utilized to measure the inhibition of the enzyme by two known inhibitors.

Abstract
AIMS The deregulation of cyclin, cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) and their inhibitors could have a crucial role in the development of diverse human cancers. METHODS In this study, we analysed the expression of cyclin D1, cyclin E, p21WAF1/CIP1 and p27KIP1 in 84 surgically resected gastric cancers by immunohistochemistry with long-term follow-up (median 38 months). We also evaluated the relation between each cell cycle regulator and various clinicopathological findings, including age, sex, histological grade, tumour location, tumour type and stage and lymph-node metastasis. RESULTS Overexpression of cyclin D1 and E was detected in 21/84 (25%) and 34/84 (40.5%) patients, respectively. Normal gastric epithelium showed consistently positive immunostain for p21WAF1/CIP1 and p27KIP1 in more than 50% of nuclei. Loss of p21WAF1/CIP1 and p27KIP1 expression was noted in 45/84 (53.6%) and 44/84 (52.4%) patients, respectively. Among the various clinicopathological findings, overexpression of cyclin E was associated with lymph-node metastasis (P=0.003) and recurrence (P=0.043). Loss of p21WAF1/CIP1 expression was more frequent in diffuse type cancers (P=0.005) and was correlated with recurrence (P=0.002) and death (P=0.002). Overexpression of cyclin E and loss of p21WAF1/CIP1 expression were significantly correlated with decreased disease-free (P=0.037; P= 0.001) and overall (P=0.031; P=0.001) survival. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that immunohistochemical analysis for cell cycle regulators, especially cyclin E and p21WAF1/CIP1, might be a useful prognostic indicator in gastric cancer.

Abstract
Although rare, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) can metastasize to the bladder. When this occurs, it might complicate diagnosis. Morphologically, RCC can be confused with transitional cell carcinomas (TCCs), especially those exhibiting clear cell features, and also with other bladder tumors, such as paragangliomas and metastatic melanomas. We report seven cases of RCC metastatic to the bladder that occurred in 6 men and 1 woman who were 35 to 69 years old. The most common presenting symptom was the reappearance of hematuria, which developed from 2 to 131 months (mean, 41.3 mo) after the removal of the primary RCC. In all of the patients, the metastatic RCC involved multiple organs; no case had an isolated metastasis to the bladder. The prognosis was poor, and five patients died of disease between 4 and 24 months (mean, 12.8 mo) after diagnosis of the metastasis to the bladder. The remaining two patients were lost to follow-up. All of the tumors were conventional clear or "granular" cell RCCs, with nuclear grades of 2 or 3. In five patients, metastases were confined to the lamina propria, but in two patients, tumors involved the muscularis propria as well. A comparative immunohistochemical study showed that metastatic RCCs were positive for CAM5.2, vimentin, and Leu-M1, and negative for cytokeratin 20, cytokeratin 7, 34betaE12, carcinoembryonic antigen, S-100 protein, HMB45, and chromogranin. Classic and clear cell TCCs were positive for all of the cytokeratins and carcinoembryonic antigen and negative for vimentin. Paragangliomas were positive for chromogranin and showed scattered positivity for the S-100 protein in the sustentacular cells. Metastatic melanomas were positive for S-100 protein and HMB45. The histologic appearance of RCC, particularly the delicate fibrovascular stroma with abundant sinusoidal vessels, is a feature that can be used to recognize the tumor. When there is difficulty diagnosing metastatic RCC, TCC, or other tumors in the bladder, the immunohistochemical findings can assist in the differential diagnosis.

Abstract
A plasmid (pYP17) containing a genomic DNA insert from Escherichia coli K-12 that confers the ability to hydrolyze carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was isolated from a genomic library constructed in the cosmid vector pLAFR3 in E. coli DH5alpha. A small 1.65-kb fragment, designated bcsC (pYP300), was sequenced and found to contain an ORF of 1,104 bp encoding a protein of 368 amino acid residues, with a calculated molecular weight of 41,700 Da. BcsC carries a typical prokaryotic signal peptide of 21 amino acid residues. The predicted amino acid sequence of the BcsC protein is similar to that of CelY of Erwinia chrysanthemi, CMCase of Cellulomonas uda, EngX of Acetobacter xylinum, and CelC of Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Based on these sequence similarities, we propose that the bcsC gene is a member of glycosyl hydrolase family 8. The apparent molecular mass of the protein, when expressed in E. coli, is approximately 40 kDa, and the CMCase activity is found mainly in the extracellular space. The enzyme is optimally active at pH 7 and a temperature of 40 degrees C.

Abstract
Sixty-eight female neonatal pigs selected for seven (Experiment 1) or eight (Experiment 2) generations for high (HG) or low (LG) plasma cholesterol were used to test the hypothesis that neonatal dietary cholesterol fed during the first 4 or 8 wk of postnatal life increases the cholesterol content of the cerebrum in young adulthood following free access to a high-fat (15%), high-cholesterol (0.5%) diet from 8 to 20 or 24 wk of age. Pigs were removed from their dams at 1 d of age and given free access to a sow-milk replacer diet containing 9.5% coconut fat and 0 or 0.5 % cholesterol. All pigs (except four HG and four LG pigs in Experiment 2, which were deprived of cholesterol throughout the study) were fed the high-fat, high-cholesterol diet from 8 wk to termination at 20 or 24 wk of age. Cerebrum weight and cholesterol concentration were higher in pigs fed cholesterol neonatally than in those deprived of cholesterol neonatally in both experiments, but weight and cholesterol concentration were unaffected by genetic line. Cholesterol concentrations in longissimus and semitendinosus muscles and in subcutaneous fat were unaffected by diet or genetic line. We conclude that dietary cholesterol deprivation during the first 4 to 8 wk of life in piglets is associated with lower cholesterol concentration and total content in the young adult cerebrum than in pigs supplemented with cholesterol in early life. These data support previous observations and suggest the possibility of a metabolic need for neonatal dietary cholesterol in normal brain development.

Abstract
Seminomas account for 50% of testicular germ-cell tumors, and more than 90% of these are classic seminomas. When patients with a histologically pure testicular seminoma show an elevated level of serum á-fetoprotein (AFP), it is generally assumed that an undetected focus of yolk sac tumor (YST) is present and the patient is managed with a treatment regimen for non-seminomatous tumor. We studied 10 cases of histologically pure seminoma with elevated levels of serum AFP in an attempt to identify any distinctive clinical, histopathologic, or immunohistochemical features. The patients ranged in age from 27 to 48 years (mean, 31 years). Eight patients had primary tumors of the testis, and two presented with supraclavicular and ileal tumors. The clinical stage at presentation varied: four tumors were stage I, four were stage II, and two were stage III. Serum levels of AFP were elevated in all patients at ranges of 10.4 to 16 ng/ml (mean, 12.0 ng/ml). In all patients, the primary tumors and metastases when present exhibited classic seminoma histology without other germ-cell components. The tumor cells expressed keratin in seven cases. The pattern of keratin immunoreactivity ranged from focal staining in five cases to moderate staining in two cases. All cases were negative for AFP, and the nine cases in which staining for CD30 (Ki-1) was performed were also negative. All four patients with stage I tumors underwent the conventional therapy for pure seminoma, i.e., orchiectomy and subsequent radiation therapy. Five patients received treatment for non-seminomatous tumors, i.e., chemotherapy after orchiectomy. Extensive work-up failed to detect the primary tumor in one patient, and he was treated for a non-seminomatous tumor, undergoing chemotherapy and irradiation. All patients are alive and well, and none has developed evidence of YST at a mean follow-up of 6 years (range, 6 months to 10 years). However, one patient who presented with an ileal metastasis recently developed a second primary extragonadal mediastinal mixed germ-cell tumor with YST and embryonal carcinoma components and an elevated serum level of AFP (27,000 ng/ml) after a 10-year disease-free follow-up. This study strongly suggests that minor elevations (</= 16 ng/ml) of AFP in patients with an otherwise pure seminoma may not indicate that there is a hidden focus of YST and that such patients should be treated with standard therapy for seminoma. Because this study includes very few patients, further studies are required to better understand the significance of borderline elevations of AFP in cases of histologically pure seminoma.

Abstract
Evidence suggests that multiple molecular events, including alteration of cell cycle regulators are involved in the development and progression of gastric carcinoma. Recently, it has been reported that the expression of p21 and p27, integrating the effects of one or more cell cycle regulators, consequently, acting as a single indicator of several possible cell cycle gene alterations is associated with tumor suppression. In the present study, we studied the immunohistochemical expression of p21 and p27 in gastrectomy specimens from 84 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma, and analysed its correlation to clinicopathologic data, including patients survival. Loss of p21 and p27 expression was noted in 45 (53.6%) and 44 (52.4%) of the 84 gastric carcinoma tissues, respectively. The expression of p21 was significantly correlated with histological type (p= 0.005), recurrence (p=0.002) and death (p=0.002) after surgery, and p27 expression (p=0.001). Kaplan-Meier survival plots showed p21 negative group (p= 0.0014) or both p21 and p27 negative group (p=0.0048) was significantly poorer in overall survival than both p21 and p27 positive or one of both positive group. Our results suggest that the status of p21 and p27 expression in immunohistochemical stain may be a useful prognostic marker of gastric carcinoma.

Abstract
Medial calcaneal displacement osteotomy or lateral column lengthening fusion has been advocated to augment tendon transfer in planovalgus foot deformity associated with chronic posterior tibial tendon insufficiency. It is hypothesized that plantar fascia tightening occurs with these procedures, helping to restore a more normal longitudinal arch. To investigate this further, nine fresh-frozen cadaver below-knee specimens were used. A flatfoot model was created by sectioning of the posterior tibial tendon, spring ligament, talonavicular capsule, and deltoid ligament. A liquid-metal strain gauge, calibrated to measure fractional changes in length, was sutured proximally to the origin and distally into the thickest portion of the medial band of the plantar fascia. Specimens were axially loaded to 400 N and plantar fascia strain was measured. Fractional length changes in the plantar fascia were then measured after a medial displacement calcaneal osteotomy and after a lateral column lengthening through the calcaneocuboid joint. Tightening of the plantar fascia did not occur with either medial calcaneal displacement or lateral column lengthening. The plantar fascia became significantly less taut with both medial displacement and lateral column lengthening. We found that lateral column lengthening produced significantly looser plantar fascia than did medial displacement of the calcaneal tuberosity.

Abstract
The phytopathogenic Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora LY34 secretes multiple isozymes of the plant cell wall-disintegrating enzyme, endoglucanases. Genomic DNA from Ecc LY34 was digested with Sau3AI and ligated into the BamHI site of pBluescript II SK+. One of the E. coli clones containing a Sau3AI fragment of Ecc genomic DNA hydrolyzed carboxymethyl cellulose and was shown to contain the 2.2 kb BamHI restriction fragment, which was subcloned to generate pLYCA100 named as celA. The structural organization of a celA gene encoding 387 amino acids consists of an open reading frame (ORF) of 1161 bp starting with an ATG start codon and followed by a TAA stop codon. CelA protein contained a typical catalytic domain, interdomain, cellulose binding domain, and prokaryotic signal peptide of 32 amino acids. Since the deduced amino acid sequences of CelA protein was very similar to those of CelV of Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora SCC3193 enzyme and to those of CelN of Erwinia atroceptica enzyme, it belongs to the cellulase family 5. The apparent molecular mass of CelA protein was calculated to be 39 kDa by carboxymethylcellulose-sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (CMC-SDS-PAGE). Activity staining of carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) in sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel containing 0.1% CMC revealed that the cloned isozyme comigrated with a corresponding isozyme produced by Ecc LY34. The CelA had a calculated pI of 5.42. The optimum pH was 7 and the optimum temperature was about 45 degrees C.

Abstract
Genomic DNA of the phytopathogenic Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora LY34 was partially digested with Sau3AI, ligated into the BamHI site of pBlue-script II SK+, and introduced into E. coli. Two clones that were able to hydrolyse carboxymethylcellulose were selected. 1.5 kb and 1.2 kb fragments containing the celA and celB genes, respectively, were subcloned and sequenced. The celA and celB genes had open reading frames of 1,161 bp and 792 bp encoding 487 and 264 amino acid residues with calculated molecular weights of 42,003 Da and 29,890 Da, respectively. Each, CelA and CelB, carried a typical prokaryotic signal peptide of 32 and 36 amino acid residues, respectively. The apparent molecular masses of the proteins when expressed in E. coli cells were approximately 39 kDa (CelA) and 26 kDa (CelB) as assessed by CMC-SDS-PAGE. Abstract
Tyrosinase-related oculocutaneous albinism (OCA1), an autosomal recessive inborn error of pigmentation, is caused by the deficiency of tyrosinase. We had previously identified two different mutations of the TYR gene in a four year old Korean male with mild OCA; a P310insC frameshift in exon 2 and an IVS2-7t-->a,-10-11deltt splice junction mutation in exon 3. Here we report a prenatal diagnostic study of a subsequent fetus of the above family that was at 25% risk of OCA1. SSCP/heteroduplex screening, restriction enzyme digestion, and allele-specific oligonucleotide hybridization analyses of DNA obtained by chorionic villus sampling indicated that the fetus was a compound heterozygote for the paternal P310insC and the maternal IVS2-7t-->a,-10-11deltt mutations. The diagnosis was later confirmed by observation of poorly pigmented irides of the abortus terminated at the 18th week of gestation. This approach provides a fast and reliable method for DNA-based prenatal diagnosis when specific mutations are known in families at high risk of OCA1.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study was attempted to investigate the effects of pentobarbital-Na, one of the barbiturates which are known to depress excitatory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system at concentrations similar to those required for the induction and maintenance of anesthesia, on catecholamines (CA) secretion evoked by cholinergic stimulation and membrane-depolarization from the isolated perfused rat adrenal gland, and to clarify the mechanism of its action. METHODS Mature male Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized with thiopenal-Na (40 mg/kg, s.c.). The adrenal gland was isolated by the methods of Wakade. A cannula used for perfusion of the adrenal gland was inserted into the distal end of the renal vein. The adrenal gland was carefully removed from the animal and placed on a platform of a leucite chamber. RESULTS The perfusion of pentobarbital-Na(30-300 uM) into an adrenal vein for 20 min produced relatively dose-dependent inhibition in CA secretion evoked by ACh(5.32 mM), DMPP(100 uM for 1 min), McN-A-343(200 uM for 2 min), Bay-K-8644(10 uM) and high potassium(56 mM), while it did not affect the CA secretion of cyclopiazonic acid(10 uM). Also, in the presence of thiopental-Na (100 uM), CA secretory responses evoked by ACh, DMPP, McN-A-343 and high K+ were markedly depressed. Moreover, in adrenal glands preloaded with ketamine(100 uM for 20 min), which is known to be a dissociative anesthetic, CA secretion evoked by ACh, DMPP, McN-A-343 and high K+ were significantly attenuated. CONCLUSION Taken together, these experimental results suggest that pentobarbital-Na depresses CA release evoked by both cholinergic stimulation and membrane-depolarization from the isolated rat adrenal medulla and that this inhibitory activity may be due to the result of the direct inhibition of Ca++ influx into the chromaffin cells without any effect on the calcium mobilization from the intracellular store.

Abstract
A case of lymphoepithelial carcinoma occurring in the left submandibular salivary gland is presented. Histologic features of this rare malignancy are described in detail. This unusual carcinoma has been described frequently in Eskimos and is usually located in the parotid gland. The raised serum IgG to Epstein-Barr virus capsid antigen suggests a causal relationship between Epstein-Barr virus and this type of salivary gland carcinoma.

Abstract
The clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical features of six cases of hemorrhagic adrenal pseudocysts are reported together, with a review of the English literature on this topic since 1950. The mean age at presentation was 57 years (range, 30-72 yr). There were four men and 2 women. The average cyst size was 9.2 cm (range, 6-16 cm). In four patients, the hemorrhagic adrenal pseudocysts were incidental findings. The remaining two patients presented with an abdominal mass and hypertension, respectively. The hemorrhagic pseudocysts were unilocular cystic masses surrounded by a fibrous capsule and containing abundant amorphous material, blood, and fibrin. Numerous dilated, thin-walled, vascular channels that stained strongly for Factor VIII-related antigen, collagen IV, laminin, Ulex europaeus agglutinin I lectin, and CD34 were present within the fibrous capsule, cyst contents, and surrounding residual adrenal gland. These findings support a vascular origin for these lesions, and they are thought, therefore, to be related to endothelial adrenal cysts. The literature review of 111 vascular adrenal cysts (85 hemorrhagic pseudocystic type and 26 endothelial type) showed similar clinical features. The mean age at presentation was 44.5 years (range, 5 d-95 yr), with a female predominance (62%). The most common clinical presentation was abdominal pain (35%), followed by incidental findings (32%). There were no significant clinical differences between hemorrhagic and endothelial type cysts. In some cases, the presence of intracystic islands of cortical cells can cause diagnostic confusion with adrenal cortical tumors. The presence, however, of a rich intracystic and capsular vascular network, normal-appearing islands of cortical cells, and abundant thrombotic fibrinous material, rather than necrotic tumor cells, should rule out the possibility of a degenerating adrenal cortical neoplasm.

Abstract
We report a case of prostate cancer in 34 year old man presenting with generalized lymphadenopathy mimicking malignant lymphoma without any urinary symptoms. Lymph node biopsy revealed metastatic adenocarcinoma and immunohistochemical stain was strongly positive to prostate antigen (PSA). Serum PSA level was also markedly elevated. Transrectal ultrasonogram showed mild enlargement in right lobe of prostate. Needle biopsy finding of prostate also was consistent with adenocarcinoma. Bone scan revealed multiple metastatic lesions including vertebrae, ribs, pelvis, and both femurs. Generalized lymphadenopathy and elevated PSA level was decreased after bilateral orchiectomy.

Abstract
Microcystic meningioma is a distinct morphological variant of meningioma, characterized by loose texture and microcysts with formation of large extracellular spaces containing edematous fluid. The tumor cells have stellate and vacuolated cytoplasm with long cytoplasmic processes. We experienced a case of typical microcystic meningioma occurring in the falx cerebri adjacent to the left superior parasagittal sinus in a 41-year-old man. The tumor showed the typical histologic features with a few nests of meningothelial whorls. The tumor cells showed diffuse immunoreactivity for vimentin, epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), and S-100 protein. Ultrastructural study confirmed the meningiomatous nature of the tumor.

Abstract
The induction of 8-hydroxyguanine (oh8Gua) endonuclease, a DNA repair enzyme for an oxidatively modified guanine, oh8Gua was studied in various growth conditions in Escherichia coli (AB1157). Anaerobically grown E. coli were found to have a very low activity of this enzyme while aerobically grown cells showed activity about 20 times that of the anaerobic level. Under the same condition, superoxide dismutase (SOD) showed about 6-fold increase in activity. A shift in growth conditions from anaerobic to aerobic resulted in rapid induction of this enzyme, and this induction was blocked (but not completely) by chloramphenicol. It is indicated that molecular oxygen is an effective stimulator to the induction of this enzyme and its induction depends partly on protein synthesis. Superoxide-producing compounds such as paraquat and menadione also increased the activity of endonuclease as well as SOD, but H2O2 showed no effect. Thus, superoxides are also implied as a stimulator. In contrast, hyperoxia induced only SOD not the endonuclease. This induction of the endonuclease by hyperoxia was only observed in a SOD-deficient strain (QC774). The aerobic activity of the endonuclease in QC774 was the same as that of wild types (AB1157, GC4468). It is implied that the responsiveness of oh8Gua endonuclease to superoxides is less sensitive than that of SOD. The endonuclease was also induced by a temperature shift from 30 to 43 degrees C and treatment with nalidixic acid. Among the stimuli used, molecular oxygen seems to be most effective for its induction. The inducible nature of this enzyme will serve as an important mechanism for the protection of oxidative DNA damage in the aerobic environment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the factors that might influence the success rate, safety and reliability of chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and to evaluate the relationship between CVS and other congenital anomalies. DESIGN Analysis of the outcome of 750 cases of CVS (730 cases with transcervical and 20 cases with transabdominal). SETTING The outpatient prenatal genetic clinic of a university tertiary care center. SUBJECT Seven hundred and fifty pregnant women that underwent CVS for prenatal genetic diagnosis from 7 to 12 weeks of gestation. RESULTS Advanced maternal age was the most common indication for CVS (32.8%). The overall sampling success rate was 98.0% (735/750), representing 93.9% at 7 to 8 weeks, 98.1% at 9 to 10 weeks, and 98.3% at 11 to 12 weeks of gestation. The majority of cases (93.1%) required one or two aspirations. Cytogenetic analysis routinely included direct overnight and long-term culture methods which revealed 16 abnormalities (2.2%). Of 735 cases in which CVS was successful, 700 advanced to normal offspring, 17 had therapeutic termination, and 18 resulted in spontaneous abortions; there was an overall fetal loss rate of 2.4% (18/750). CONCLUSION CVS in early pregnancy is a relatively safe and reliable method of prenatal genetic diagnosis capable of replacing genetic amniocentesis. However, it must be done by experienced personnel. No congenital anomalies were found to be related to CVS in this series.

Abstract
To evaluate the clinical utility of third trimester Doppler waveform analysis of the uterine artery in predicting complicated pregnancies and fetal well-being, we compared adverse pregnancy outcomes in 2321 women with the presence of an elevated systolic-diastolic ratio (greater than 2.6) with the persistence of an early diastolic notch and with the combination of an elevated systolic-diastolic ratio and an early diastolic notch. The positive predictive values are 47.5%, 82.9%, and 92.6%, respectively. From these data we can conclude that determination of the presence or absence of an early diastolic notch is more valuable in predicting the perinatal outcome than is the presence of an elevated systolic-diastolic ratio alone. We also suggest that an assessment of the uterine artery systolic-diastolic ratio combined with the evaluation for persistent early diastolic notch would be a clinically useful test for fetal well-being.

Abstract
We have shown that sequences contained within the viral mRNA 5'-untranslated region (UTR) played a critical role in directing selective influenza viral mRNA translation. We therefore attempted to identify transacting factors that may regulate viral mRNA translation through interactions with the 5'-UTR and at the same time map the precise sequences to which these factors bind. We can now demonstrate that multiple cellular proteins interact with influenza viral but not cellular 5'-UTRs using gel mobility shift and UV cross-linking analyses. Gel supershift studies revealed that the La autoantigen was one of the cellular proteins that interacted with the viral 5'-UTR. Utilizing mutants of the viral mRNA 5' UTR, we have determined that sequences within the very 5'-conserved region and nucleotides immediately 3' are necessary but not always sufficient for binding certain cellular proteins. Northwestern analysis showed the binding of a distinct subset of cellular proteins to the viral 5'-UTR, but also demonstrated interactions of the viral nonstructural protein NS1. Gel shift analysis with purified recombinant NS1 confirmed the binding of the viral protein to a specific region of the viral 5'-UTRs. A model describing the possible role of these cellular and viral RNA-binding proteins in regulating influenza virus mRNA translation will be discussed.

Abstract
Neck masses in children may be inflammatory, neoplastic or congenital. Although most of these masses are benign inflammatory nodes, an asymptomatic neck mass is the most common presentation of head and neck malignancies in children. Cystic lesions are usually pharyngeal cleft remnants or vascular malformations, whereas solid lesions are generally inflammatory or neoplastic. While the history and the physical examination are the most important parts of the evaluation of neck masses in children, biopsy may be necessary to establish the diagnosis.

Abstract
The Doppler ultrasound with color flow mapping image has been recently applied for the evaluation of gynecologic diseases, in particular, malignant trophoblastic tumors with the characteristic abundant blood flow. Doppler color flow mapping of uterine artery and intratumoral blood vessels was performed at a regular interval in all 26 patients including 3 cases of lost for follow up. Systolic/diastolic (S/D) ratio representing blood flow was measured in 19 cases of malignant trophoblastic tumors and 7 cases of hydatidiform mole diagnosed at the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yonsei University, College of Medicine. The initial mean S/D ratio and standard deviation(SD) of uterine artery in 11 remitted and 5 non-remitted patients were 2.72 +/- 1.31 and 2.69 +/- 1.80, respectively. No significant difference was noted between two groups. However, the final S/D ratio of uterine artery in remitted group showed significantly higher values than non-remitted group, of which values were 6.23 +/- 2.38 and 3.08 +/- 1.54, respectively (P < 0.05). In aspect of blood flow changes in malignant trophoblastic tumors after chemotherapy, remitted group showed entirely disappeared blood flow, while non-remitted group had persistent blood flow. The mean S/D ratio and SD measured in hydatidiform mole patients were 5.43 +/- 1.65, of which value reflects higher resistance than malignant trophoblastic tumors. Also blood flow was not detected in all cases. This study suggests that color flow mapping Doppler ultrasound can be a useful method in diagnosing and monitoring the treatment in malignant trophoblastic tumors along with the conventional serum beta-hCG titration.

Abstract
Comprehensive information on the composition of the whole spectrum of essential inorganic elements in sow milk is very limited. The objectives of this study were to measure concentrations of major and trace mineral elements in milk of third-generation sows selected for high (H) or low (L) serum cholesterol concentrations at 8 wk of age and to determine correlations between concentrations of milk cholesterol and major and trace mineral elements in sow milk. Twenty-one H and 21 L and 8 contemporary unselected control (U) Chester White x Landrace x Large White x Yorkshire crossbred sows were milked on d 20 or 21 of their first lactation. A standard corn and soybean meal-based diet was fed to all sows during pregnancy and lactation. There were no differences among the sow groups in milk concentrations of Ca, K, Mg, Na, and P, indicating that the genetic selection for serum cholesterol did not affect major mineral contents of the milk. Concentration of S in milk of the H sows was significantly (P < .05) higher than that of the U sows. Effects of genetic group were significant for concentrations of B, Al, Cu, and Mn in the milk, but not for Mo and Zn concentrations. Milk cholesterol concentration was negatively correlated with milk Al (P < .05), B (P < .01), and Mn (P < .05) for pooled data; there was no relationship between milk cholesterol concentration and that of other mineral elements.
