Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the association between obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) activity, and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations in male patients. METHODS Consecutive patients with symptoms suggestive of OSAS were recruited and divided into non-OSAS (n = 18) and OSAS (n = 32) groups. FMD was measured in the brachial artery; blood samples were taken to measure ROCK activity and CRP concentrations. RESULTS ROCK activity and CRP concentrations were significantly higher, and FMD was significantly lower, in the OSAS group than in the non-OSAS group. There was a correlation between ROCK activity and FMD. In stepwise multiple regression analyses, the proportion of sleep time spent with an oxygen saturation < 90% was a significant determinant of ROCK activity, while body mass index was the only significant determinant of CRP concentration. The oxygen desaturation index was a significant determinant of FMD. CONCLUSIONS OSAS increased ROCK activity and was a major determinant of endothelial dysfunction.

Abstract
This double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated the efficacy and tolerability of adjunctive topiramate in 86 elderly Chinese patients with refractory partial epilepsy. Patients who had at least four seizures per 4 weeks during an 8-week baseline period, despite medication with up to three standard antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), were randomly assigned to receive topiramate (n = 46) or placebo (n = 40). Topiramate dosages were titrated (target dose 200 mg/day orally) for 8 weeks and maintained at stable levels for another 12 weeks; concomitant AEDs continued at original dosages. All patients completed the study: 47.8% in the topiramate group and 7.5% on placebo reached ≥ 50% reduction in complex partial seizures. In the topiramate group, the most common adverse events were dizziness, somnolence, fatigue, headache and difficulty with memory; most events were transient and mild or moderate in severity. It was concluded that 200 mg/day topiramate was effective and well-tolerated in elderly patients with refractory partial epilepsy.

Abstract
Objective To describe clinical features of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Shanghai, China. Methods Prevalent patients with MS were identified and investigated by a network of physicians in 11 districts of Shanghai during the period from 1 September 2004 to 31 August 2005. Admission registries of each hospital in the study area were checked systematically for patients with a diagnosis of MS, neuromyelitis optica or other demyelinating disorders. All patients with collected information were evaluated by four senior neurologists according to the McDonald criteria. Results There were 249 (146 female and 103 male) patients with a confirmed MS diagnosis, at a female-to-male ratio of 1.4. The mean age at onset of MS was 37.4 years for the 249 patients with MS and, on the prevalence day, 42.7 years. The most frequent location of clinical MS lesions in the central nervous system was the spinal cord (61%), followed by the cerebrum (55%) and optic nerves (41%). Nearly all (96%) of the patients with MS had been examined by magnetic resonance imaging, and 226 (94%) patients of those examined were suggestive of MS. No family history of MS was found in any of the patients. Most (86%) of the patients had no or mild disability on the prevalence day (31 December 2004). Almost all (96%) patients with MS had been treated with corticosteroids. Conclusion Clinical features of patients with MS are described based on the information from the largest case series reported among Chinese. Comparisons and discussions are made with findings from the other populations.

Abstract
Two or eight zinc triphenyl porphyrins were conjugated with Zn-phthalocyanine or H2-phthalocyanine to form ZnPc-(ZnTPP)2, ZnPc-(ZnTPP)8, H2Pc-(ZnTPP)2 and H2Pc-(ZnTPP)8. Energy transfers from the porphyrin moiety to phthalocyanine part were quantitatively studied with the modality of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). By measuring the fluorescence increment from the phthalocyanine moiety and the decrease from porphyrin part under selective excitation at the B band of the porphyrin part in those conjugated compounds and their equimolar mixture of compositions, energy transfer efficiencies were estimated to be 90% for H2Pc-(ZnTPP)8 and ZnPc-(ZnTPP)8, and 60%, 30% for ZnPc-(ZnTPP)2 and H2Pc-(ZnTPP)2, respectively.

Abstract
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data along the (0,0)-(pi,pi) nodal direction with significantly improved statistics reveal fine structure in the electron self-energy of the underdoped (La2-xSrx)CuO4 samples in the normal state. Fine structure at energies of (40-46) meV and (58-63) meV, and possible fine structure at energies of (23-29) meV and (75-85) meV, have been identified. These observations indicate that, in (La2-xSrx)CuO4, more than one bosonic modes are involved in the coupling with electrons.

Abstract
A simple and sensitive electrochemical immunosensor with impedance labelless detection and novel data processing method was investigated. One-step copolymerization was used to electrochemically deposit an antibody impregnated polypyrrole film on a glassy carbon electrode surface for the immunosensor. Impedance measurements provided a labelless or reporterless method to detect antibody (Ab)-antigen (Ag) interactions. Dimensionless analysis was employed to successfully process the measured impedance data. Since the method derived unit impedance change to eliminate or reduce the variation of the bulk electronic properties of Ab/polypyrrole films, the signal to noise ratio (S/N) was significantly improved for high sensitivity and specificity. Nonspecific binding effect was studied by array electrode chips and was found out that the polypyrrole electrode without antibody attachment had much stronger nonspecific binding effect than the Ab/polypyrrole electrode; incubation followed by thoroughly washing significantly reduced the nonspecific interference. 10 pg/ml detection limit and superior specificity were achieved by the method, demonstrating a highly sensitive labelless immunosensor in comparison with the detection limit of ng -microgram/ml for the reported polypyrrole based immunosensors. The electrochemical immunosensors presented in this paper, due to its simplicity, low cost, high sensitivity and superior specificity, could be an invaluable tool for clinical diagnostics and could have potential applications in drug discovery, environmental and food analysis.

Abstract
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on an underdoped (La(2-x)Srx)CuO4 system show that, at energies below 70 meV, the quasiparticle peak is well defined around the (pi/2,pi/2) nodal region and disappears rather abruptly when the momentum is changed from the nodal point to the (pi,0) antinodal point along the underlying "Fermi surface." It indicates that there is an extra low energy scattering mechanism acting upon the antinodal quasiparticles. We propose that this mechanism is the scattering of quasiparticles across the nearly parallel segments of the Fermi surface near the antinodes.

Abstract
The kinetic energy distribution of D+ ions resulting from the interaction of a femtosecond laser pulse with D2 molecules is calculated based on the rescattering model. From analyzing the molecular dynamics, it is shown that the recollision time between the ionized electron and the D+2 ion can be read from the D+ kinetic energy peaks to attosecond accuracy. We further suggest that a more precise reading of the clock can be achieved by using shorter fs laser pulses (about 15 fs).

Abstract
The electrical transport properties of epitaxial superconducting Bi(2+y)Sr(2-x-y)La(x)CuO(6+delta) thin films have been studied in magnetic fields. Using a modified Coulomb-gas scaling law, we can fit all the magnetic field dependent low resistance data with a universal scaling curve, which allows us to determine a relation between the activation energy of the thermally activated flux flow resistance and the characteristic temperature scaling parameters.

Abstract
An incommensurate modulation has been observed in a Cu-rich La2CuO4.003 crystal. It is shown that the modulation results from a periodically distributed holes lying on the CuO2 planes, and that the hole modulation may be regarded to be a kind of valence modulation. It is shown that appreciable valence modulation contrast may be generated by the mechanisms of hole scattering alone when the period of the modulation is of the order of 2 nm.

Abstract
By measuring the superconducting diamagnetic moments for an underdoped and an overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystal with equal quality and roughly equal transition temperatures, it is found that the underdoped sample has only one transition which corresponds to H(c2), but the overdoped sample has two transitions with the higher one at H(c2). Further investigation reveals the same upper-critical field H(c2) for both samples although the overall charge densities are very different, indicating the possibility of a very direct and detailed equivalence of the superconducting condensation process in the two doping limits. The second transition for the overdoped sample can be understood as the bulk coupling between the superconducting clusters produced by macroscopic phase separation.

Abstract
Crebanine (Cre) iv 5 mg/kg could convert BaCl2-induced arrhythmia into sinus rhythm in rats, and could significantly increase the tolerant dose of aconitine to produce ventricular fibrillation (VF) and cardiac arrest (CA) in rats. The drug could also decrease the incidence of VF and CA by CaCl2 in rats and by chloroform in mice, but had no protective effects on ouabain-induced arrhythmias in guinea pigs.
