The crystal structure of 4'-{4-[(2,2,5,5-tetra-methyl-N-oxyl-3-pyrrolin-3-yl)ethyn-yl]phen-yl}-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine

The terpyridine group of the title compound, C31H27N4O, assumes an all-transoid conformation and is essentially planar with the dihedral angles between the mean planes of the central pyridine and the two outer rings amounting to 3.87 (5) and 1.98 (5)°. The pyrroline-N-oxyl group commonly seen in such nitroxyls is found in the title structure and the mean plane of the pyrroline ring subtends a dihedral angle of 88.44 (7)° to the mean plane of the central pyridine ring. The intra-molecular separation between the nitrogen atom of the central pyridine unit of the terpyridine group and the nitroxyl group is 14.120 (2) Å. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are arranged in layers stacked along [001]. Slipped face-to-face π-π inter-actions between the pyridine rings are observed along this direction with the shortest centroid-centroid distances amounting to 3.700 (1) and 3.781 (1) Å. Furthermore, edge-on C-H⋯π inter-actions between the phenyl-ene rings of neighbouring mol-ecules are observed along this direction. A two-dimensional C-H⋯O hydrogen-bonded network is formed within the (010) plane. The shortest O⋯O separation between neighbouring mol-ecules is 5.412 (3) Å.

Ruthenium sensitizers with a hexylthiophene-modified terpyridine ligand for dye-sensitized solar cells: synthesis, photo- and electrochemical properties, and adsorption behavior to the TiO2 surface

Two novel ruthenium sensitizers with a hexylthiophene-modified terpyridine ligand (TUS-35 and TUS-36) were synthesized to improve the molar absorptivity of the previously reported ruthenium sensitizer (TBA)[Ru{4'-(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)-4,4″-dicarboxyterpyridine}(NCS)3], TBA = tetrabutylammonium (TUS-21). A relatively strong absorption appeared at ∼380 nm, and the molar absorption coefficient at the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band decreased in TUS-35 by introducing a 2-hexylthiophene unit to the 5-position of the terpyridine-derived ligand. For comparison, a relatively strong absorption was observed at ∼350 nm without decreasing the molar absorption coefficient at the MLCT band in TUS-36 by introducing a 2-hexylthiophene unit to the 4-position of the terpyridine-derived ligand. On the other hand, the energy levels of the highest occupied molecular orbitals and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of these two sensitizers were found to be almost equal to those of TUS-21. The adsorption behavior of TUS-35 and TUS-36 was similar to that of (TBA)[Ru{4'-(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)terpyridine}(NCS)3] (TUS-20), which binds to the TiO2 surface by using the 3,4-dicarboxyphenly unit, rather than that of TUS-21, which adsorbs to the TiO2 photoelectrode using one of the carboxyl groups at the terminal pyridines of the terpyridine-derived ligand. Therefore, TUS-35 and TUS-36 are considered to bind to the TiO2 surface by using the 3,4-dicarboxyphenly unit just like TUS-20. The dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) with TUS-35 and TUS-36 showed a relatively lower conversion efficiency (6.4% and 5.7%, respectively) compared to the DSC with TUS-21 (10.2%). Open-circuit photovoltage decay and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed that the promoted charge recombination and/or charge transfer of the injected electrons in the TiO2 photoelectrode is a main reason for the inferior performances of TUS-35 and TUS-36.

Revealing the supramolecular nature of side-chain terpyridine-functionalized polymer networks

Nowadays, finely controlling the mechanical properties of polymeric materials is possible by incorporating supramolecular motifs into their architecture. In this context, the synthesis of a side-chain terpyridine-functionalized poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) is reported via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. By addition of transition metal ions, concentrated aqueous solutions of this polymer turn into metallo-supramolecular hydrogels whose dynamic mechanical properties are investigated by rotational rheometry. Hence, the possibility for the material to relax mechanical constrains via dissociation of transient cross-links is brought into light. In addition, the complex phenomena occurring under large oscillatory shear are interpreted in the context of transient networks.

Crystal structure of bis-(2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-κ(3) N,N',N'')nickel(II) dicyanidoaurate(I)

In an ionic compound composed of bis­(2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine)­nickel(II) dications and dicyanidoaurate(I) dianions in a 1:2 ratio, the two tridentate terpyridine ligands define the coordination of the Ni²⁺ cation, resulting in a nearly octa­hedral coordination sphere, although there is not any imposed crystallographic symmetry about the Ni²⁺ site.

The title compound, [Ni(C₁₅H₁₁N₃)₂][Au(CN)₂]₂, is an ionic compound composed of bis­(2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine)­nickel(II) dications and dicyanidoaurate(I) anions in a 1:2 ratio. The two tridentate terpyridine ligands define the coordination of the Ni²⁺ cation, resulting in a nearly octa­hedral coordination sphere, although there is not any imposed crystallographic symmetry about the Ni²⁺ site. The two nearly linear dicyanidoaurate(I) anions [C—Au—C = 179.0 (2) and 178.2 (2)°] contain a short aurophilic inter­action of 3.1017 (3) Å. The structure does not demonstrate any π–π stacking. Non-classical C—H⋯N inter­actions between the cations and anions build up a three-dimensional network.

One ligand in dual roles: self-assembly of a bis-rhomboidal-shaped, three-dimensional molecular wheel

A facile high yield, self-assembly process that leads to a terpyridine-based, three-dimensional, bis-rhomboidal-shaped, molecular wheel is reported. The desired coordination-driven supramolecular wheel involves eight structurally distorted tristerpyridine (tpy) ligands possessing a 60° angle between the adjacent tpy units and twelve Zn(2+) ions. The tpy ligand plays dual roles in the self-assembly process: two are staggered at 180° to create the internal hub, while six produce the external rim. The wheel can be readily generated by mixing the tpy ligand and Zn(2+) in a stoichiometric ratio of 2:3; full characterization is provided by ESI-MS, NMR spectroscopy, and TEM imaging.

Synthesis, photophysical and electrochemical characterization of terpyridine-functionalized dendritic oligothiophenes and their Ru(II) complexes

Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions were used to synthesize novel π-conjugated oligothienylene-ethynylene dendrons and their corresponding terpyridine-based ligands. Their complexation with Ru(II) led to interesting novel metallodendrimers with rich spectroscopic properties. All new compounds were fully characterized by ¹H and ¹³C NMR, as well as MALDI–TOF mass spectra. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on these complexes gave more insight into the molecular orbital distributions. Photophysical and electrochemical studies were carried out in order to elucidate structure–property relationships and the effect of the dendritic structure on the metal complexes. Photophysical studies of the complexes revealed broad absorption spectra covering from 250 to 600 nm and high molar extinction coefficients. The MLCT emission of these complexes were significantly red-shifted (up to 115 nm) compared to the parent [Ru(tpy)₂]²⁺ complex.

A high molar extinction coefficient bisterpyridyl homoleptic ru(II) complex with trans-2-methyl-2-butenoic acid functionality: potential dye for dye-sensitized solar cells

In our continued efforts in the synthesis of ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes as potential dyes for use in varied applications, such as the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), this work particularly describes the synthesis, absorption spectrum, redox behavior and luminescence properties of a new homoleptic ruthenium(II) complex bearing a simple trans-2-methyl-2-butenoic acid functionality as the anchoring ligand on terpyridine moiety. The functionalized terpyridine ligand: 4′-(trans-2-methyl-2-butenoic acid)-terpyridyl (L1) was synthesized by aryl bromide substitution on terpyridine in a basic reaction condition under palladium carbide catalysis. In particular, the photophysical and redox properties of the complex formulated as: bis-4′-(trans-2-methyl-2-butenoic acid)-terpyridyl ruthenium(II) bis-hexafluorophosphate [Ru(L1)₂(PF₆)₂] are significantly better compared to those of [Ru(tpy)₂]²⁺ and compare well with those of the best emitters of Ru(II) polypyridine family containing tridentate ligands. Reasons for the improved photophysical and redox properties of the complex may be attributed partly to the presence of a substituted α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid moiety leading to increase in the length of π-conjugation bond thereby enhancing the MLCT-MC (Metal-to-ligand-charge transfer-metal centred) energy gap, and to the reduced difference between the minima of the excited and ground states potential energy surfaces.

Syntheses and applications of furanyl-functionalised 2,2':6',2''-terpyridines

Different synthetic routes leading to terpyridines functionalised with furan heterocycles are reviewed. The methodologies used to prepare such compounds include the ring closure of 1,5-diketones and cross-coupling reactions. These versatile terpyridines and their derived metal complexes find applications in various fields including coordination chemistry, medicinal chemistry and material sciences.
