Abstract
Thin SiO₂ films were grown on a Ru(0001) single crystal and studied by photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy. The experimental results in combination with density functional theory calculations provide compelling evidence for the formation of crystalline, double-layer sheet silica weakly bound to a metal substrate.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The benefits of thermal comfort and indoor air quality with personalized ventilation (PV) systems have been demonstrated in recent studies. One of the barriers for wide spread acceptance by architects and HVAC designers has been attributed to challenges and constraints faced in the integration of PV systems with the work station. A newly developed ceiling-mounted PV system addresses these challenges and provides a practical solution while retaining much of the apparent benefits of PV systems. Assessments of thermal environment, air movement, and air quality for ceiling-mounted PV system were performed with tropically acclimatized subjects in a Field Environmental Chamber. Thirty-two subjects performed normal office work and could choose to be exposed to four different PV airflow rates (4, 8, 12, and 16 L/s), thus offering themselves a reasonable degree of individual control. Ambient temperatures of 26 and 23.5 degrees C and PV air temperatures of 26, 23.5, and 21 degrees C were employed. The local and whole body thermal sensations were reduced when PV airflow rates were increased. Inhaled air temperature was perceived cooler and perceived air quality and air freshness improved when PV airflow rate was increased or temperature was reduced. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The newly developed ceiling-mounted PV system offers a practical solution to the integration of PV air terminal devices (ATDs) in the vicinity of the workstation. By remotely locating the PV ATDs on the ceiling directly above the occupants and under their control, the conditioned outdoor air is now provided to the occupants through the downward momentum of the air. A secondary air-conditioning and air distribution system offers additional cooling in the room and maintains a higher ambient temperature, thus offering significant benefits in conserving energy. The results of this study provide designers and consultants with needed knowledge for design of PV systems.

Abstract
This paper discusses a novel artificial anal sphincter with sensor feedback for controlling anal incontinence. The artificial anal sphincter system is a novel hydraulic-electric muscle which mainly comprises an artificial anal sphincter, a wireless power supply subsystem, and a communication subsystem. High integration of all functional components and no wire linking to the outer device make surgical implantation easier and lower risk. The wireless power supply subsystem employs a Class-E power amplifier based on adaptive control technique, and the electromagnetic compatibility in biological tissue is analysed. With the goal of designing a reliable and safe instrument, the models of human colonic blood flow and rectum motion are developed, the biomechanical material properties of human rectum and tissue ischaemia are analysed. The results show that the deformation of the artificial anal sphincter can be controlled by the press of reservoir below the upper limit of human tissue ischaemia. In vitro experiments demonstrate the artificial anal sphincter system is a good cure for human anal incontinence problems.

Abstract
Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are major excitatory neurotransmitter receptors in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Two lynx proteins (Nl-lynx1 and Nl-lynx2) have been identified in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, which act as modulators on insect nAChRs. In the present study, two lynx proteins were found to act on the triplet receptor Nlalpha1/Nlalpha2/beta2 expressed in Xenopus oocytes, increasing agonist-evoked macroscopic currents, but not changing agonist sensitivity and desensitization properties. Nl-lynx1 and Nl-lynx2 increased I(max) (maximum responses) of acetylcholine to 4.85-fold and 2.40-fold of that of Nlalpha1/Nlalpha2/beta2 alone, and they also increased I(max) of imidacloprid to 2.57-fold and 1.25-fold. Although, on another triplet nAChRs Nlalpha3/Nlalpha8/beta2, Nl-lynx2 increased I(max) of acetylcholine and imidacloprid to 3.63-fold and 2.16-fold, Nl-lynx1 had no effects on I(max) of either acetylcholine or imidacloprid. The results demonstrate the selectivity of lynx proteins for different insect nAChR subtypes. This selectivity was also identified in native N. Lugens. Co-immunoprecipitation was found between Nlalpha1/Nlalpha2-containing receptors and both Nl-lynx1 and Nl-lynx2, but was only found between Nlalpha3/Nlalpha8-containing receptors and Nl-lynx2. When the previously identified Nlalpha1(Y151S) and Nlalpha3(Y151S) mutations were included (Nlalpha1(Y151S)/Nlalpha2/beta2 and Nlalpha3(Y151S)/Nlalpha8/beta2), the increase in I(max) of imidacloprid, but not acetylcholine, caused by co-expression of Nl-lynx1 and Nl-lynx2 was more noticeable than that of their wildtype counterparts. Taken together, these data suggest that two modulators, Nl-lynx1 and Nl-lynx2, might serve as an influencing factor in target site insensitivity in N. lugens, such as Y151S mutation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Air-abrasion as bonding conditioning method for zirconia ceramic might compromise the mechanical strength of zirconia restorations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of surface conditioning parameters, i.e., air-abrasion with reduced pressure or no air-abrasion and priming with adhesive primers on the long-term resin bond strength to zirconia ceramic. METHODS Zirconia ceramic disks were polished with 600 grit abrasive paper. Plexiglas tubes filled with composite resin were bonded with RelyX Unicem luting composite resin to the conditioned zirconia disks. Three surface conditions (unconditioned, air-born particle abrasion at 0.05 or 0.25 MPa) and four priming conditions (no priming, priming with Metal/Zirconia Primer, priming with Alloy Primer, priming with Clearfil Ceramic Primer) were tested. Sixteen specimens of each combination were bonded. Subgroups of eight bonded samples were stored in water either for 3 days or 150 days with 37,500 thermocycling. Tensile bond strengths (TBSs) were determined with a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 2mm/min. RESULTS Without priming, RelyX Unicem showed durable bond strength to 0.25 MPa airborne-particle abraded ceramic. When combined with 10-methacryloyloxy-decyl dihydrogenphosphate containing primers, air-abrasion resulted in a durable TBS to zirconia ceramic even at a reduced abrasion pressure. However, combined with Metal/Zirconia Primer air-abrasion did not provide a durable TBS to zirconia ceramic. SIGNIFICANCE Using a self-adhesive luting resin composite (RelyX Unicem), air-abrasion at 0.25 MPa or the combination of low pressure air-abrasion and priming with MDP-containing primers seems to be useful to achieve durable long-term bonding to zirconia ceramic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate body fluids of patients with undiagnosed leukodystrophies using in vitro (1)H-NMR spectroscopy (H-NMRS). METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study using high-resolution in vitro H-NMRS on CSF and urine samples. RESULTS We found a significant increase of free sialic acid in CSF or urine in 6 of 41 patients presenting with hypomyelination of unknown etiology. Molecular genetic testing revealed pathogenic mutations in the SLC17A5 gene in all 6 patients. H-NMRS revealed an increase of N-acetylaspartylglutamate in the CSF of all patients with SLC17A5 mutation (range 13-114 micromol/L, reference <12 micromol/L). CONCLUSION In patients with undiagnosed leukodystrophies, increased free sialic acid in CSF or urine is a marker for free sialic acid storage disorder and facilitates the identification of the underlying genetic defect. Because increase of N-acetylaspartylglutamate in CSF has been observed in other hypomyelinating disorders, it can be viewed as a marker of a subgroup of hypomyelinating disorders.

Abstract
It is observed that ramie (Boehmeria nivea), an economic fiber crop, can establish and colonize metal-contaminated sites in China. Metal tolerance and accumulation by ramie originating from 13 metal-contaminated and 4 "clean" sites in China were compared under field and hydroponic conditions. All selected populations and germplasms displayed good growth performance under diverse metal-contaminated habitats; while growth responses, metal accumulation and tolerance were similar among the 8 populations and 2 germplasms when exposed to solutions containing elevated As, Cd, Pb, or Zn in the laboratory. These revealed that ramie possesses a certain degree of constitutional metal tolerance. To our knowledge, this is the first report of constitutional metal tolerance possessed by a fiber crop. Ramie can be considered as a good candidate for both fiber production and phytoremediation of sites contaminated by multi-metals, as it accumulates relative low metal concentrations, but possesses both high biomass and high economic value.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Suppression of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system can prevent atrial fibrillation (AF) by attenuating atrial structural remodelling but the role of aldosterone in AF prevention has not been investigated thoroughly. We explored whether the aldosterone antagonist, spironolactone, could improve atrial structural remodelling in long-term rapid pacing-induced AF. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Three groups of dogs were used, sham-operated, control and spironolactone-treated groups. Dogs in the control and spironolactone groups had right atrial pacing for 6 weeks. The spironolactone group was given spironolactone 1 week before and during the atrial pacing. After 6 weeks of pacing, atrial structural and functional changes were assessed by echocardiography, haemodynamic parameters by cardiac catheterization, histopathological changes by light and electron microscopy and cardiomyocyte apoptosis by TUNEL. Caspase-3, Bcl-2, bax, calpain I, calpastatin, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 were analysed by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. The inducibility and duration of AF were measured by atrial burst pacing. KEY RESULTS After atrial pacing, the proportion of TUNEL positive cells, myolysis, atrial fibrosis and dilatation were all significantly increased and these changes were inhibited by spironolactone. Spironolactone treatment reversed the increased expression of caspase-3, bax, calpain I and MMP-9 and the decreased level of Bcl-2, calpastatin and TIMP-1, induced by chronic atrial pacing. Also spironolactone prevented the increased inducibility and duration of AF, induced by tachypacing. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Treatment with spironolactone prevented myocardial apoptosis, myolysis, atrial fibrosis and dilatation, suggesting a possible beneficial effect of aldosterone antagonism on atrial structural remodelling in AF.

Abstract
Although yaks play an important role as companion or pack and draught animals on Chinese plateaus in alpine and sub-alpine regions, morphological studies and anatomical data on the lung of yak are sparse. To provide anatomical descriptions and morphometric data, 10 one-day-old yaks were examined by means of dissection, light and electron microscopy. The measurements of lung were made on dissected specimens and histological sections. Unequal dichotomous branching was demonstrated in the dissected tracheobronchial tree. The diameters of bronchial airways and height of epithelium were measured, and showed that the variation of diameters in airways was always greater than that of height of epithelium. In addition, the thickness of muscularis, cartilage and adventitia was examined, as well as the number of goblet and Clara cells in airways. Ultrastructural studies showed that the surface epithelium was mainly composed of goblet, ciliated, Clara and basal cells, similar to that in other domestic animals. Under electron microscope, two distinctive types of ciliated cells could be seen in the tracheobronchial epithelium. The first type contained some mitochondria, distended smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER), little rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and numerous vacuoles in electron-lucent cytoplasm. The second type had dense cytoplasm with abundant mitochondria, RER and no vacuoles. Both types were rich of glycogen granules. The goblet cells in neonatal yak lung had the following characteristic features: dentate nucleus in dense cytoplasm, with stacks of RER and numerous dense membrane-bounded mucous droplets, which were round or oval, often with an electron-lucent core. The droplets were not confluent. Glycogen granules were numerous, and Golgi complex was occasionally present. Clara cells were dome-shaped and usually protruded into the airway lumen. Large amounts of SER and many secretory droplets were found within the cytoplasm. Several typical 'clefts' were also found in the cytoplasm.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE ANPCEs are rare benign tumors of the eye arising from the NPCE in adults, which may be clinically mistaken for melanoma. This study was undertaken to delineate clinical and MR imaging features of these tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Clinical presentation and MR imaging findings of 8 patients (6 women and 2 men; median age, 51 years) with pathologically confirmed ANPCEs were retrospectively reviewed. Location, size, shape, margin, signal intensity, and gadolinium-enhancement characteristics of all tumors were evaluated. Signal intensity and degree of enhancement were graded in comparison with the ipsilateral lacrimal gland. RESULTS MR imaging revealed a circumscribed enhancing mass within the ciliary body of the eye in all 8 patients. The mass was ovoid in 6 patients and spheric in 2. Gadolinium enhancement was marked in 4 lesions and moderate in the other 4. Both T1 and T2 relaxation times were qualitatively identical to those in the lacrimal gland in 2 tumors. In the remaining 6 tumors, the T1 was identical to and the T2 longer than that in the lacrimal gland. CONCLUSIONS ANPCE should be included in the differential diagnosis of a spheric or ovoid enhancing ciliary body mass with T1 similar to that in the lacrimal gland and T2 equal to or longer than that in the lacrimal gland.
