Abstract
Budd-Chiari syndrome associated with protein-losing enteropathy is reported. A 26-year-old male suffered from ascites, edema in the lower extremities, and engorgement of ascending veins on the abdominal wall. The diagnosis of Budd-Chiari syndrome was made by inferior vena cavography. The 131I-polyvinylpyrrolidone test showed the association of protein-losing enteropathy. The surgical operation was performed successfully, resulting in a marked improvement of signs and symptoms. To date, no similar case has yet been reported. There are, however, a number of reported cases of hypoproteinemia in Budd-Chiari syndrome, which might have been associated with a protein-losing enteropathy.

Abstract
Electron microscopic study of the small intestine in cases of intestinal lymphangiectasia and in cases of constrictive pericarditis was performed. This study revealed that numerous chylomicron-like particles are present in the lymphatic lumina, in the extracellular spaces of the lamina propria, and within the interepithelial spaces between the absorptive cells. Presence of chylomicron-like particles in the intestinal lumen suggested possibility of passage of these substances into the intestinal tract through the interepithelial spaces. Similar findings to those as seen in intestinal lymphangiectasia were observed in constrictive pericarditis. A few pseudopode-like cytoplasmic projections of the undifferentiated crypt cells were noted. Other mechanisms of enteric protein loss are postulated.

Abstract
The HLA antigens in 44 cases of ulcerative colitis and 271 control individuals in Japan were studied. The NIH tissue typing method was used according to the new leukocyte nomenclature adapted by the WHO Committee. In normal Japanese populations, the HLA antigens, which were of high frequency, were HLA A2(37.3%), A9(60.9%) and B5 (40.6%). On the contrary, the significantly high frequency of HLA B5 was demonstrated in ulcerative colitis, compared with that in control. Moreover, HLA B5 in cases with ulcerative colitis excluding those with proctitis only, was found with higher frequency than that in total cases. Although the most frequent haplotype was HLA A9-B5 in control, so frequent haplotype was not found in ulcerative colitis. A family study revealed no significant diathesis on the hapolytpe of HLA in ulcerative colitis. The relationship between MLC locus and ulcerative colitis was not yet clarified from the study of one family whose two members suffered from ulcerative colitis.

Abstract
Bipedal lymphography was performed in 5 cases of Behçet's disease. In 4 of 5 cases, histologic examination of intestinal biopsy specimens showed lymphatic dilatation of the small intestine which were considered to be a characteristic finding of intestinal lymphangiectasia, a protein-losing enteropathy, but no patient with Behçet's disease showed reduced concentration of serum total protein as well as abnormal value of 131I-PVP test. Lymphograms showed an increase in number of iliopelvic and lumbar lymphatic vessels as a major finding, but they failed to demonstrate a hypoplasia or aplasia of lymphatic system or obstruction of thoracic duct. It is conceivable that the lymphatic dilatation of the small intestine in Behçet's disease may be related to increased flow of lymph due to excessive vascular hyperpermeability and may not be related to a block of lymphatic system which has been considered to be a cause of enteric protein loss in intestinal lymphangiectasia. The authors wish to emphasize that the dilatation of lymphatic vessel of the small intestine is not a sufficient finding to indicate the presence of protein-losing enteropathy.

Abstract
Angiography was performed in 11 patients with ulcerative colitis and prednisolone injected directly into the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries in 10 patients. Hypervascularity of the affected regions was a common finding, but early venous filling was noted in only 5 cases out of 11. Good results were obtained by intra-arterial steroid injections.

Abstract
The radiographic and endoscopic features of the colonic ulcers during the course of a case of systemic lupus erythematosus are illustrated. Barium enema revealed the "collar button" type of penetrating ulcers in the left half of the colon and endoscopy demonstrated multiple round- or oval-shaped discrete ulcers, so-called "punched-out" ulcers with pale mucosa. These findings are compared with those of the reported cases of systemic lupus erythematosus and ulcerative colitis. Steroid and 6-mercaptopurine therapy was effective in this case.

Abstract
Cleavage of SV40 DNA by bleomycin was assayed quantitatively in vitro in the presence of various ppolynucleotides. SV40 DNA was protected from bleomycin- duced cleavage by native or denatured DNA of other origins, oly dG-C.poly dG-C, poly dA-T.poly dA-T and poly dA-T (denatured) but not by tRNA of E. coli, apurinic acid, poly dA, poly dT and various deoxyribooligonucleotides. Various bleomycins and their derivatives and various fragments of bleomycin were tested for possible activity in cleaving SV40 DNA and from the results some structure-activity relationships for the action of bleomycin to act on DNA were outlined. Actinomycin D stimulated bleomycin action while ethidium bromide inhibited it.

Abstract
Small intestinal mucosa obtained from six fasting patients with cholera by a peroral biopsy technique was studied with the electron microscope. The cultures of their rectal swabs were all positive for Vibrio cholerae. In the absorptive cells, large pseudopod-like cytoplasmic processes with deformed microvilli or without microvilli (blebs) projected into the intestinal lumen from the apical cell surface, interrupting the microvillous border. In the crypts some of the undifferentiated crypt cells possessed pseudopod-like cytoplasmic projections which extended into the crypt lumen. The swelling of mitochondria, the disappearance of their cristae, an increase in the number of vesicles of the Golgi apparatus, and the dilatation and vesiculation of endoplasmic reticulum were observed in the epithelial cells. The apical portion of the cells became oedematous in some of the epithelial cells. Cytoplasmic fragments enclosed by a plasma membrane, desquamated epithelial cells, cytoplasmic organelles, and secretory granules were lying free in the intestinal lumen.Marked irregular widening of the interepithelial spaces in the jejunal mucoa was observed at the midvillous area. Many cystic vacuoles were present in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells. The possibility of fluids being transported from blood vessels to intestinal lumina through the interepithelial spaces, and the significance of these pathological findings in human cholera are discussed in this study.
