Abstract
Varying the substrate temperature T(s) from 285 to 353 K, both the aggregation behavior of Ag atoms and the preferred structures of the atomic Ag islands on silicone oil surfaces are investigated. After deposition, the deposited Ag atoms form isolated islands with a preferred height. Our observations reveal that, as T(s) increases, the preferred island height increases from 20.0 to 33.0 nm, which results in the decrease of the Ag apparent coverage, from 9.6 ± 0.1% to 6.5 ± 0.3%. Further, the crystal structure of the Ag islands changes from amorphous to polycrystalline as the substrate temperature T(s) goes up. Subsequently a 3D aggregation mechanism of the Ag atoms on the liquid substrates is proposed.

Abstract
Current challenges in adhesive dentistry include over-hydrophilic bonding formulations, which facilitate water percolation through the hybrid layer and result in unreliable bonded interfaces. This study introduces nanogel-modified adhesives as a way to control the material's hydrophobic character without changing the basic monomer formulation (keeping water-chasing capacity and operatory techniques unaltered). Nanogel additives of varied hydrophobicity were synthesized in solution, rendering 10- to 100-nm-sized particles. A model BisGMA/HEMA solvated adhesive was prepared (control), to which reactive nanogels were added. The increase in adhesive viscosity did not impair solvent removal by air-thinning. The degree of conversion in the adhesive was similar between control and nanogel-modified materials, while the bulk dry and, particularly, the wet mechanical properties were significantly improved through nanogel-based network reinforcement and reduced water solubility. As preliminary validation of this approach, short-term micro-tensile bond strengths to acid-etched and primed dentin were significantly enhanced by nanogel inclusion in the adhesive resins.

Abstract
Growth and fatness are economically important traits in pigs. In this study, a genome scan was performed to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) for 14 growth and fatness traits related to body weight, backfat thickness and fat weight in a large-scale White Duroc × Erhualian F(2) intercross. A total of 76 genome-wide significant QTL were mapped to 16 chromosomes. The most significant QTL was found on pig chromosome (SSC) 7 for fatness with unexpectedly small confidence intervals of ∼2 cM, providing an excellent starting point to identify causal variants. Common QTL for both fatness and growth traits were found on SSC4, 5, 7 and 8, and shared QTL for fat deposition were detected on SSC1, 2 and X. Time-series analysis of QTL for body weight at six growth stages revealed the continuously significant effects of the QTL on SSC4 at the fattening period and the temporal-specific expression of the QTL on SSC7 at the foetus and fattening stages. For fatness traits, Chinese Erhualian alleles were associated with increased fat deposition except that at the major QTL on SSC7. For growth traits, most of White Duroc alleles enhanced growth rates except for those at three significant QTL on SSC6, 7 and 9. The results confirmed many previously reported QTL and also detected novel QTL, revealing the complexity of the genetic basis of growth and fatness in pigs.

Abstract
This study used long-range polymerase chain reaction to sequence 4.5 or 4.3 kb of genomic DNA covering human leukocyte antigen C (HLA-C) and its flanks in 45 Chinese Han subjects to better characterize variation in the gene in a single population. Sequences of 35 HLA-C alleles were obtained from the population, including major alleles of 13 lineages of HLA-C. Four novel alleles, C*03:04:01:02, C*04:01:01:03, C*08:22, and C*17:01:01:02, were identified, and complete full-length sequences of 18 HLA-C alleles were obtained for the first time. All sequences herein reported also represent extensions through the promoter region and the 3'-untranslated region. Fourteen 5'-nucleotide sequences and 14 3'-nucleotide sequences were detected outside the coding region. In total, 316 single-nucleotide polymorphisms unequally distributed in HLA-C subregions were observed. In addition to exons 2 and 3, nucleotide variability was found to be particularly high in exon 5, which encodes the transmembrane region. The differentiation of the C*07 and C*17 lineages in this region accounts for the high variability. The congruence of phylogeny across most regions of the gene suggests that gene conversion or recombination has not markedly influenced divergence between lineages in the evolution of HLA-C.

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are stably present in human serum. The relationship between circulating miRNAs and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected liver disease has not been previously reported. Applied Biosystems array-based miRNA expression profiling was performed on pooled sera obtained from identified groups of chronic asymptomatic carriers (ASC), patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and HBV-associated acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), as well as healthy controls (HC). Nine miRNAs were verified in more clinical samples by RT-PCR. The correlation between miRNAs expression and the relationship between miRNA levels and clinical characteristics was analysed. Results showed that circulating miRNAs were detected in all disease and control samples, and their numbers increased with symptom severity, from 37 in HC, 77 in ASC, 101 in CHB, to 135 in ACLF. The expression levels of most miRNAs were also up-regulated in HBV-infected patients when compared to HC. Expression of the liver-specific miR-122 was significantly up-regulated in HBV-infected patients. Concomitant regulation of miRNAs not in clusters was disrupted by HBV infection. However, such disruption was not observed for miRNAs in paralogous clusters. Furthermore, the level of miRNAs in the CHB serum was up-regulated most in hepatitis B e antigen-positive patients. The expression levels of miR-122 and miR-194 correlated negatively with the age of patients with CHB or ACLF. Functional analysis showed that miR-122 could inhibit HBV replication in Huh7 and HepG2 cells. In all, our study revealed that a number of miRNAs were differentially expressed during HBV infection and underscored the potential importance of miR-122 in the infection process.

Abstract
High corrosion rate and accumulation of hydrogen gas upon degradation impede magnesium alloys' clinical application as implants. In this work, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) was used to fabricate a porous coating on magnesium alloys as an intermediate layer to enhance the bonding strength of propolis layer. Then the composite coatings were fabricated using sol-gel method by dipping sample into the solution containing propolis and polylactic acid at 40 °C. The corrosion resistance of the samples was determined based on potentiodynamic polarization experiments and immersion tests. Biocompatibility was designed by observing the attachment and growth of wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJCs) on substrates with MAO coating and substrates with composite coatings. The results showed that, compared with that of Mg-Zn-Ca alloy, the corrosion current density of the samples with composite coatings decreased from 5.37 × 10⁻⁵ to 1.10 × 10⁻⁶ A/cm² and the corrosion potential increased by 240 mV. Composite coatings exhibit homogeneous corrosion behavior and can promote WJCs cell adhesion and proliferation. In the meantime, pH value was relatively stable during the immersion tests, which may be significant for cellular survival. In conclusion, our results indicate that composite coatings on Mg-Zn-Ca alloy fabricated by MAO/sol-gel method provide a new type bioactive material.

Abstract
Nedd4 family interacting protein 1 (Ndfip1) is an adaptor protein that regulates Itch, an E3 ubiquitin ligase that ubiquitylates JunB, thereby preventing interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-5 production. Mice lacking Ndfip1 or Itch develop T helper type 2 (T(H)2)-mediated inflammation in the skin and lungs and die prematurely. In this study we show that Ndfip1-/- mice also develop inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Inflammation is characterized by infiltration of eosinophils and T cells and is accompanied by a failure to gain weight. T cells are both necessary and sufficient for eosinophil recruitment and inflammation. This is because Ndfip1-/- T cells become activated and produce IL-5. Itch mutant mice develop much less severe gastrointestinal inflammation, suggesting that Ndfip1 regulation of Itch cannot entirely account for this phenotype and that Ndfip1 has both Itch-dependent and Itch-independent roles. Ndfip1 may also regulate human disease. We found single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the Ndfip1 locus that associate with inflammatory bowel disease. Taken together, our data support a role for Ndfip1 in gastrointestinal inflammation in both mice and humans.

Abstract
A one-step, economical nanoemulsion method has been introduced to synthesize low-melting-point metallic nanoparticles. This nanoemulsion technique exploits the extremely high shear rates generated by the ultrasonic agitation and the relatively large viscosity of the continuous phase - polyalphaolefin (PAO), to rupture the molten metal down to diameter below 100 nm. Field's metal nanoparticles and Indium nanoparticles of respective average diameters of 15 nm and 30 nm have been obtained. The nanoparticles size and shape are determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Their phase transition behavior is examined using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). It is found that these nanoparticles dispersed in PAO can undergo reversible, melting-freezing phase transition, and exhibit a relatively large hysteresis. The experimental results suggest that the nanoemulsion method is a viable route for mass production of low-melting nanoparticles.

Abstract
Silver nanocomposite coatings are prepared by the sol-gel method for the prevention of biofilm formation on the surface of medical implanted devices. High-temperature processing of such coatings can lead to diffusion of nanosilver and reduce the amount of available silver particles for long-term effects. Using a low-temperature sol-gel method, we have successfully prepared silane-based matrices, phenyltriethoxysilane (PhTEOS), containing different amounts of Ag nanoparticles. The incorporation of a silver salt into the sol-gel matrix resulted in a desired silver release rate, i.e. high initial release rate followed by a lower sustained release for more than 15 days, as determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been employed to investigate the morphology of the film surfaces before and after immersion in a nutrient-rich bacterial suspension of approximately 10⁸ CFU ml⁻¹, which was incubated for up to 30 days at 37 °C. It was found that thin films containing 35 nm particles could prevent the formation of biofilm for over 30 days. The presence of surface silver before and after 3, 9 and 15 days immersion was confirmed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Abstract
Hsp20 is chaperone protein that is highly and constitutively expressed in the brain, cardiac tissue and many other organs. Recently, it is well established that Hsp20 can enhance cardiac function and render cardioprotection. However, the potential benefits of Hsp20 and its phosphorylation form action on ischemic stroke and its underlying mechanism(s) are largely unknown.To investigate whether Hsp20 exerts protective effects in vitro ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, mouse neuroblastoma cells were subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) and reoxygenation. Expression mRNA and protein levels of Hsp20 were strongly downregulated in mouse N2A cells at the 0-hour and 6-hour recovery time points following 4 hours of OGD, and returned to basal level 12 and 24 hours after OGD treatment. The ratio of phosphorylated to total Hsp20 protein was not significantly affected by OGD treatment at the 0-hour and 6-hour recovery time points following 4 hours of OGD. However, markedly higher serine phosphorylation of Hsp20 was observed 12 and 24 hours after OGD treatment. Furthermore, overexpression of Hsp20 reduced OGD-induced apoptosis by reducing the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria to cytosol. However, blockade of Hsp20 phosphorylation at Ser16 abrogated this anti-apoptotic effect.Our data demonstrate that increased Hsp20 expression in mouse N2A neuroblastoma cells protects against I/R injury, resulting in reduced apoptosis, which is by reducing the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria to cytosol. Phosphorylation of Ser16 plays an important role in its protective effect. Thus, Hsp20 may constitute a new therapeutic target for cerebral ischemic diseases.
