Recovery of nickel ions from simulated electroplating rinse water by electrodeionization process

Pure water production and recovery of Ni(2+) from dilute NiSO(4) solution via improved electrodeionization (EDI) process were investigated. It was indicated that, with the feed water containing 50 mg L(-1) Ni(2+), the dilute resistivity of the EDI could achieve 3 MOmega cm which gave a Ni(2+) rejection more than 99.8% while the Ni(2+) was concentrated as high as 1,583 mg L(-1) in the concentrate stream. The current efficiency was as high as 40% and the concentrate factor could reach 31.7. The experiment results demonstrated that, just in a single process, it was feasible to purifying and concentrating dilute nickel wastewater synchronously by the EDI technology.

Fluoride removal from brackish groundwater by direct contact membrane distillation

The direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) applied for fluoride removal from brackish groundwater is presented. The self-prepared polyvinylidene fluoride membrane exhibited high rejection of inorganic salt solutes and a maximum permeate flux 35.6 kgm(-2) h(-1) was obtained. The feed concentration had no marked impact on the permeate flux and the rejection of fluoride. The precipitation of CaCO3 would clog the hollow fiber inlets and foul the membrane surface with the increase of concentration factor when natural groundwater was used directly as the feed, which resulted in a rapid decline of the module efficiency. This phenomenon was diminished by acidification of the feed. The experimental results showed that the permeate flux and the quality of obtained distillate kept stable before concentration factor reached 5.0 with the acidified groundwater as feed. The membrane module efficiency began to decline gradually when the feed continued to be concentrated, which can be mainly attributed to the formation of CaF2 deposits on the membrane surface. Finally, a 300 h continuous fluoride removal experiment on acidified groundwater was carried out with concentration factor at 4.0, the permeate flux kept stable and the permeate fluoride was not detected.

Endovascular treatment of recurrent intracranial aneurysms with re-coiling or covered stents

OBJECTIVE

To report our experiences in the treatment of recurrent intracranial aneurysms with re-coiling or covered stents.

METHODS

A total of 291 patients with 305 intracranial aneurysms were treated with detachable coils, and 41 (28.9%) of 142 patients with aneurysms in the internal carotid artery had a recurrent aneurysm during the follow-up period. For this study, 31 recurrent aneurysms in 31 patients who had angiograms within 6 months following retreatment with detachable coils (group A, n = 20) or covered stents (group B, n = 11) were analysed. Aneurysms were categorised as complete or incomplete occlusion via angiographic assessment and graded as full recovery, improvement, no change or deterioration via clinical assessment. Data regarding technical success, initial and final angiographic results, mortality, morbidity and final clinical outcome were collected and analysed postoperatively.

RESULTS

Coil embolisation and covered stent placement were technically successful in all recurrent aneurysms. The initial angiographic results showed complete occlusion in 11 patients (55%) in group A and in eight (72.7%) in group B (p = 0.452), and the final angiographic results exhibited complete occlusion in 10 patients (50%) in group A and in 11 (100%) in group B (p = 0.005). There were no significant differences in technique success, mortality, culminate morbidity or final clinical outcome between the two groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Recurrent aneurysms after coiling can be successfully treated and occluded with re-coiling or covered stent placement. However, covered stents seem to be more effective than re-coiling with regard to complete occlusion of recurrent aneurysms.

Rainwater harvesting in schools in Taiwan: system characteristics and water quality

In order to understand the current status of rainwater harvesting (RWH) practices in Taiwan's schools, a study was carried out to examine the RWH system performance, water usage, and water quality in these sites. A total of 29 schools in various regions were selected for this investigation, including 7 in the northern, 7 in the central, 8 in the southern, and 7 in the eastern regions of Taiwan. Water quality indicators tested were: pH, temperature, conductivity, oxidation-reduction potential, suspended solid, total organic carbon, fecal coliform, and total coliform. From this study, it was found that RWH systems in these sites generally had two different designs: one that collected rainwater only, and one that collected both rainwater and grey water. From statistical analysis, it was found that water quality indicators such as suspended solids, total organic carbon, and fecal coliform were significantly affected by the water source and site location. Fecal coliforms in most of the sites we studied were high and not qualified for toilet flushing. The average water retention time of 2.4 months was long and considered to be the main reason to cause high fecal coliform counts. Finally, the benefit analysis was conducted to evaluate economic feasibility of rainwater harvesting for these schools. It turned out that 20% of them were able to gain economic benefits from using rainwater.

Desalination of brackish groundwater by direct contact membrane distillation

The direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) applied for desalination of brackish groundwater with self-made polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes was presented in the paper. The PVDF membrane exhibited high rejection of non-volatile inorganic salt solutes and a maximum permeate flux 24.5 kg m(-2) h(-1) was obtained with feed temperature at 70 degrees C. The DCMD experimental results indicated that the feed concentration had no significant influence on the permeate flux and the rejection of solute. When natural groundwater was used directly as the feed, the precipitation of CaCO(3) would be formed and clog the hollow fibre inlets with gradual concentration of the feed, which resulted in a rapid decline of the module efficiency. The negative influence of scaling could be eliminated by acidification of the feed. Finally, a 250 h DCMD continuous desalination experiment of acidified groundwater with the concentration factor at constant 4.0 was carried out. The permeate flux kept stable and the permeate conductivity was less than 7.0 microS cm(-1) during this process. Furthermore, there was no deposit observed on the membrane surface. All of these demonstrated that DCMD could be efficiently used for production of high-quality potable water from brackish groundwater with water recovery as high as 75%.

Inpatient treatment of diabetic patients in Asia: evidence from India, China, Thailand and Malaysia

AIMS

The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) has grown rapidly, but little is known about the drivers of inpatient spending in low- and middle-income countries. This study aims to compare the clinical presentation and expenditure on hospital admission for inpatients with a primary diagnosis of Type 2 DM in India, China, Thailand and Malaysia.

METHODS

We analysed data on adult, Type 2 DM patients admitted between 2005 and 2008 to five tertiary hospitals in the four countries, reporting expenditures relative to income per capita in 2007.

RESULTS

Hospital admission spending for diabetic inpatients with no complications ranged from 11 to 75% of per-capita income. Spending for patients with complications ranged from 6% to over 300% more than spending for patients without complications treated at the same hospital. Glycated haemoglobin was significantly higher for the uninsured patients, compared with insured patients, in India (8.6 vs. 8.1%), Hangzhou, China (9.0 vs. 8.1%), and Shandong, China (10.9 vs. 9.9%). When the hospital admission expenditures of the insured and uninsured patients were statistically different in India and China, the uninsured always spent less than the insured patients.

CONCLUSIONS

With the rising prevalence of DM, households and health systems in these countries will face greater economic burdens. The returns to investment in preventing diabetic complications appear substantial. Countries with large out-of-pocket financing burdens such as India and China are associated with the widest gaps in resource use between insured and uninsured patients. This probably reflects both overuse by the insured and underuse by the uninsured.

166. EMBRYO IMPLANTATION IS ASSOCIATED WITH SPECIFIC EXPRESSION OF PROPROTEIN CONVERTASE 6 IN THE RABBIT UTERUS

Proprotein convertase 5/6 (PC6) is a member of the proprotein convertase family that endoproteolytically cleave latent precursor proteins into their biologically active state. We have previously demonstrated that endometrial PC6 is critical for embryo implantation in mice and primates, including human. PC6 regulates the endometrial physiology specifically at implantation in association with epithelial differentiation during the establishment of endometrial receptivity (in human and monkey) and stromal cell decidualization (in the mouse, human and monkey). PC6 was further confirmed to be a unique PC member that is tightly regulated in the endometrium in relation to implantation. Our further studies (unpublished) suggest that PC6 regulates adhesion molecules in the endometrial epithelium for implantation in women. It is known that between the mouse and human, the endometrial stroma-mediated responses are similar whereas the epithelial cells behave differently. Because PC6 regulates primarily the stromal component (decidualization) in the mouse, in vivo mouse models are critical to investigate the roles of PC6 in decidualization. To address the function of PC6 in endometrial epithelium, non-mouse models relevant to human implantation are required. The rabbit is regarded as an excellent model to study the molecular events of embryo adhesion and attachment. The current study aimed to determine the expression pattern and localisation of PC6 in the rabbit uterus during early pregnancy. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed that PC6 mRNA expression was dynamically up-regulated in the rabbit uterus immediately prior to implantation. Western blotting and immunohistochemical analyses demonstrated that PC6 protein was predominantly localised to the basal glands throughout pregnancy, and up-regulated specifically in the epithelium at the embryo attachment site. These findings suggest that PC6 may play an essential role in rabbit implantation, and that the rabbit is a useful animal model to investigate the function of PC6 during embryo attachment.

Sonographic value in diagnosis of hemorrhagic ovarian cysts

PURPOSE

To investigate the sonographic characteristics of hemorrhagic ovarian cysts (HOC) and to avoid unnecessary surgery.

METHODS

113 cases of suspected HOC underwent sonographic and clinical follow-up for three months.

RESULTS

104 cases were clinically diagnosed with HOC as the masses disappeared naturally. The mean length of the greatest diameter was 5.12 +/- 1.33 cm, and the mean period of disappearance was 3.5 +/- 2.4 weeks. There were four patterns of the image: 21 cases (20.2%) showed a diffused dense echo pattern, 25 cases (24.0%) displayed a mixed pattern, 30 cases (28.8%) expressed a sponge-like pattern and 28 cases (27.0%) exhibited a cystic pattern. Ring blood flow with high velocity and low resistance was detected in 41 cases (40%) and there was no internal blood flow.

CONCLUSION

HOC showed characteristic features on sonography, which provided useful information to differentiate HOC from ovarian tumors.

Isolation and characterization of a sea cucumber fucoidan-utilizing marine bacterium

AIMS

To isolate a fucoidan-utilizing strain from seawater for sea cucumber fucoidan degradation.

METHODS AND RESULTS

The utilization of sea cucumber fucoidan was monitored by H(2)SO(4)-phenol assay for neutral sugar. The bacterium CZ1127 was isolated from seawater and shown to have a relatively large maximum fucoidan-utilizing rate of 81.5%. CZ1127 was confirmed to belong to the family Flavobacteriaceae by 16S rDNA and physiological analyses. This strain has an ability to utilize fucoidans extracted from various sea cucumbers to different degrees. Both extracellular and intracellular enzymes of CZ1127 could degrade sea cucumber fucoidan, as confirmed by high-performance size exclusion chromatography. The M(r) of sea cucumber fucoidan could be reduced from 792.6 kDa to at least 3.7 kDa by the crude intracellular enzyme of this strain.

CONCLUSIONS

The marine bacterial strain CZ1127, which belongs to the family Flavobacteriaceae, was found to utilize various sea cucumber fucoidans and furthermore showed promise in sea cucumber fucoidan enzymatic degradation and oligosaccharide preparation.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

The finding of a novel source can be applied in sea cucumber fucoidan enzymatic degradation. Furthermore, it is the first definite report of a bacterial strain that can utilize the fucoidans from various sea cucumbers.

Highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells of thick mesoporous titania films derived from supramolecular templating

Thick titania films of highly ordered orthorhombic pore organization and sufficient thickness up to a few micrometers have been synthesized via a supramolecular templated route and layer-by-layer deposition. An appropriate pre-heat treatment was applied to improve the mesopore accessibility. The mesoporous films were highly crystallized with the crystallite size of approximately 12 nm regardless of the film thickness, due to the spatial confinement of mesopores. A high optical transparency was demonstrated for the mesoporous films, which is ascribed to the high mesoporosity and uniformity of the ordered film structure. Both the mesopore accessibility and optical transparency have contributed to the high performance of these films as photoanodes in the dye-sensitized solar cells, showing a maximum solar energy conversion efficiency of 6.02% for a film of 5.08 microm in thickness.

Breast Cancer Subtypes in Northern Chinese Women

Introduction: Breast cancer is currently regarded as a heterogeneous disease. Gene expression analysis has identified several subtypes that differ in prognosis and therapy response. Little is known about the distribution of these subtypes among native Chinese women.Patientsand Method: From December 2006 to November 2008, 1,133 women were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in Shanxi province cancer hospital and 818 had assessable information for ER, PR, and Her-2/neu status. Based on immunohistochemical surrogates for ER, PR, and Her-2/neu status obtained from the department of pathology, the molecular subtypes were defined as: luminal A (ER+ and/or PR+, HER2−), luminal B (ER+ and/or PR+, HER2+), basal-like (ER−, PR−, HER2−), and Her-2/neu (ER−, PR−, and HER2+).Results: Luminal A was the most prevalent breast cancer subtype (70.6%), compared with the luminal B breast cancer subtype (15%), basal-like breast cancer subtype (9.6%), and Her-2/neu breast cancer subtype (4.8%). The frequency of Her2 positive breast cancer was 19.88% in the cohort studied. The luminal B breast cancer subtype was largely presented in patients aged less than 50 years old (58.8%) compared with the luminal A subtype (48.5%), basal-like subtype (52.6%) and Her-2/neu breast cancer subtypes (47.4%). The largest tumor size was basal-like breast cancer (28.1mm), followed by luminal B (25.8mm), Her-2/neu (25.7mm) and luminal A (23mm) (P = 0.003). The lymph node status did not vary among the four groups, however, the mean number of lymph nodes metastasis was significantly different with 3.2, 2.9, 5.7 and 4.9 for luminal A, luminal B, Her-2/neu and basal-like subtypes respectively (P = 0.005).Conclusions: The distribution of breast cancer subtypes in Northern Chinese women was similar to other ethnicities. The basal-like and Her-2/neu breast cancer subtypes were associated with unfavorable clinical features. Further studies will identify the difference in treatment response and prognosis among the four subtypes in this cohort.

A Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in Steroid Receptor Coactivator-1 Diminishes the Coactivation of ERα

Estrogen signaling is critical in the progression of a large fraction of breast cancers as well as in the maintenance of bone mineral density. Generally speaking, Tamoxifen, a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), blocks estrogen signaling in the breast by acting as an antagonist at the same time as promoting estrogen signaling in the bone by acting as an agonist. This tissue specific action characteristic of SERMs is thought to be maintained by the balance of levels and/or activities of estrogen receptor (ER) coregulators. Because of this critical role, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ER coregulators could have a dramatic effect on tamoxifen action.Previous studies have implicated steroid receptor coactivator-1 (SRC-1) as a critical coregulator for the mixed antagonist-agonist specificity of tamoxifen. By using an ERE-Tk-Luciferase transient transfection assay, we have shown that a SNP causing the amino acid change P1272S in SRC-1 dramatically reduces its ability to coactivate ERα.To assess the impact of this SNP on tamoxifen action in breast cancer we decided to genotype the SRC-1 P1272S SNP in a breast tumor DNA bank. This bank was generated from archived tumors from individuals either exclusively receiving adjuvant tamoxifen or not receiving any adjuvant therapy following surgical resection. Currently, the bank is composed of 1000 samples divided equally among the two groups. Genotyping for the SRC-1 P1272S SNP is currently underway.Since SRC-1 has also been shown to be important in proper maintenance of bone mineral density (BMD) and in the agonist action of tamoxifen in certain tissues, we also assessed the impact of the P1272S SNP in bone following tamoxifen therapy. We genotyped breast cancer patients exclusively receiving tamoxifen therapy (i.e. no chemotherapy, no radiation) who had lumbar (n=113) and/or hip (n=108) BMD scans before and after 12 months of tamoxifen therapy. We observed a significant association between the SNP and bone loss; women harboring the P1272S SNP lost 6.4% of their lumbar BMD, while women with the WT version lost only 1.3% of their lumbar BMD.These findings illustrate the critical role of SRC-1 in tamoxifen action in bone, and potentially other hormone responsive tissues. Studies are ongoing to decipher the mechanism for decreased coactivation activity of the SNP, and also to extend the clinical association studies.

High Nuclear Expression of CXCR4 Is Associated with Metastases and Decreased Survival in Hormone Sensitive Breast Cancer

Introduction: CXCR4 chemokine receptor and its specific ligand SDF-1alpha are thought to play an important role in breast cancer metastases. High levels of SDF-1alpha in the common destination organs of metastasis are thought to attract CXCR4-positive tumour cells.Aim: The aim of the study was to test whether CXCR4 expression in the primary tumour can indicate breast cancer with high likelihood of metastasising.Methods: Tissue slides were prepared from the paraffin embedded primary tumours of breast cancer patients. CXCR4 expression was detected using immunohistochemistry assessed by a pathologist. Disseminated tumour cells (DTC's) were detected in the bone marrow samples of patients taken at the time of surgery using anti-HEA/FITC-conjugated antibody and flow cytometry. All other clinicopathological features of the patients were also compiled.Results: CXCR4 expression was assessed in one hundred and ten patients. They had a mean age of 57.18 years and a median follow up of 84 months (range 4 – 108). 72.6% of patients had a T2 or a T3 tumour. The majority were hormone sensitive, 80.9% and Her2/neu negative, 76.1%. Disseminated tumour cells were found in the majority of patients, 85.5%, but 57.2% had greater that 1000 DTC's/100,000. There was no correlation found between cytoplasmic staining for CXCR4 and the clinicopathological features of the tumours including DTC's. High nuclear staining was associated significantly with decreased overall and disease free survival, p<0.041 and p<0.025. Tumours with high nuclear staining were significantly more likely to be hormone sensitive, tubulo-lobular tumours [p<0.008, p<0.0349], from older, post-menopausal women [p<0.081, p<0.018]. There was no correlation between her2/neu and CXCR4 expression. Disseminated tumour cells and lymph node metastases were not associated with nuclear staining but these tumours were more likely to develop distant metastases, p<0.034.Conclusion: High nuclear expression of CXCR4 was significantly associated with hormone sensitive breast cancers and development of distant metastases. These patients had decreased overall and disease free survival. Our results show CXCR4 has an important role in breast cancer metastases and has both prognostic and therapeutic potential.

Spin-polarized transport induced by spin-pumping in a Rashba ring

The Keldysh Green's function method is employed to study spin-dependent electron transport through a Rashba ring with a quantum dot (QD) embedded in one of its arms. Zero charge bias is applied on the system while a rotating magnetic field is considered in the QD to pump pure spin current. The Rashba spin-orbital coupling (RSOC) can cause a spin precession phase of the electron passing through the ring, so that the quantum interference in the ring can lead to a spin-polarized charge current flowing in the leads and the arm without a QD, whereas only pure spin current is flowing in the other arm with a QD. It is shown that for low frequency ω of the rotating magnetic field, the pumped charge current is proportional to ω unlike the charge current produced by mono-parametric quantum charge pumping, which is usually proportional to ω(2). Moreover, the magnitude, the direction, as well as the spin-polarization of the charge current can be controlled by tuning the device parameters such as the QD energy level, the RSOC strength, and the strength of the electron tunneling between the leads and the QD. Hence the studied device may serve as a generating source for tunable spin-polarized current in the spintronics field.

Molecular cloning of the two very low-density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR) subtypes in geese and the effect of overfeeding on their MRNA levels

The objectives of this study were to verify the existence of two subtypes of the very low-density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR) gene in geese, to investigate the effect of overfeeding on the plasma concentration of triglycerides (TG) and the very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), the activity of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), and the mRNA level of VLDLR in Sichuan White geese and Landes geese. The results indicate that there are two subtypes of the VLDLR gene in geese, and that they share a high similarity with those of other species. The expression of VLDLR I and VLDLR II was found in both tissues examined. After overfeeding, the expression level of VLDLR I in adipose tissue showed about a onefold increase (P < 0.05) in both breeds. Overfeeding induced a significant decrease of VLDLR I in skeletal muscle of both breeds, and a significant decrease of VLDLR II in Sichuan White geese (P < 0.05), but an obvious increase of VLDLR II in Landes geese (P < 0.05). In addition, overfeeding induced the increase of plasma VLDL, TG concentration and plasma LPL activity. It was concluded that VLDLR may participate in the metabolism of VLDL-TG by regulating the LPL-mediated TG hydrolysis in geese. Elderly Mexicans have less muscle and greater total and truncal fat compared to African-Americans and Caucasians with the same BMI

BACKGROUND

How body composition, specifically skeletal muscle mass, compares in Mexican elderly to other ethnic groups has not previously been reported. We tested the hypothesis that older adults from Northwest Mexico (Mex) would have similar total appendicular skeletal muscle (TASM) compared with New York dwelling Caucasians (Cauc) and African-Americans (AA).

METHODS

Two hundred and eighty nine Mex (135 males and 154 females), 166 AA (36 males and 130 females) and 229 Cauc (64 males and 165 females), aged 60-98 years were assessed. Total and regional fat and lean tissues were measured by whole-body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry where TASM is the sum of arm and leg bone-free and fat-free lean tissue. Differences in TASM were tested by ANCOVA, with age, height, and body mass index (BMI) as covariates.

RESULTS

TASM adjusted for ethnicity, age, height and BMI, were 22.6 +/- 0.2 kg and 17.8 +/- 0.1 kg for males and females, respectively (p < 0.001). Among males with similar age, height, and BMI, Mex had less TASM compared with AA and Cauc (p < 0.001). Total body fat and truncal fat were higher (p < 0.001) and FFM lower (p < 0.001) in Mex compared to both AA and Cauc males after adjusting for age and BMI. Among females, Mex had higher total and truncal fat (p < 0.001) after adjusting for age and BMI, and significantly lower TASM (p < 0.001) after adjusting for age, height, and BMI compared to AA and Cauc females.

CONCLUSIONS

Elderly Mex have a different body composition compared with AA and Cauc of a similar BMI and age. Mex have significantly less TASM with greater total and truncal fat. In the long-term, Mex elderly may be at greater risk for sarcopenic obesity compared to other ethnic groups.

Identification of surface structures on 3C-SiC nanocrystals with hydrogen and hydroxyl bonding by photoluminescence

SiC nanocrystals (NCs) exhibit unique surface chemistry and possess special properties. This provides the opportunity to design suitable surface structures by terminating the surface dangling bonds with different atoms thereby boding well for practical applications. In this article, we report the photoluminescence properties of 3C-SiC NCs in water suspensions with different pH values. Besides a blue band stemming from the quantum confinement effect, the 3C-SiC NCs show an additional photoluminescence band at 510 nm when the excitation wavelengths are longer than 350 nm. Its intensity relative to the blue band increases with the excitation wavelength. The 510 nm band appears only in acidic suspensions but not in alkaline ones. Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption near-edge structure analyses clearly reveal that the 3C-SiC NCs in the water suspension have Si-H and Si-OH bonds on their surface, implying that water molecules only react with a Si-terminated surface. First-principle calculations suggest that the additional 510 nm band arises from structures induced by H(+) and OH(-) dissociated from water and attached to Si dimers on the modified (001) Si-terminated portion of the NCs. The size requirement is consistent with the observation that the 510 nm band can only be observed when the excitation wavelengths are relatively large, that is, excitation of bigger NCs.
