Abstract
In the outer membrane of P. aeruginosa, a protein of apparent molecular weight 8,000 (protein I) is present as a major protein. Purification and chemical analysis of protein I were carried out. This protein was purified by essentially the same procedure as for the purification of the E. coli lipoprotein, which was developed by Inouye et al. (J. Bacteriol. (1976) 127, 555--563). The amino acid composition of protein I was determined. Protein I lacks proline, valine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, and half-cystine. Fatty acid analysis of the protein revealed that it contained 0.89 mol of fatty acids per mol of protein. Among the fatty acids hexadecanoic acid (C16:0) was predominant. In an in vivo labeling experiment, [2-3H]glycerol was incorporated into protein I. A protein with similar mobility to protein I on urea-SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was isolated from the purified peptidoglycan of P. aeruginosa by trypsin digestion. The amino acid composition of this protein was essentially the same as that of protein I. These results indicate that the outer membrane of P. aeruginosa contains a protein analogous to the E. coli lipoprotein, although considerable differences were observed in the amino acid composition and the fatty acid content.

Abstract
Differentiation potency of the hepatic primordium isolated from 21- to 35-somite stage quail embryos was examined by the transplantation in the coelomic cavity of the chick embryo. The hepatic primordium differentiates into hepatic parenchyma, intra- and extrahepatic bile ducts, and gall bladder. The hepatic parenchyma and two types of biliary ducts can differentiate from any fragment of the hepatic primordium divided at craniocaudal or proximodistal levels, while the gall bladder develops mainly from the proximal area of the primordium. These results indicate that the presumptive areas of hepatic parenchyma and biliary ducts are not arranged in a mosaic way in the young primordium, whereas the presumptive area of the gall bladder is restricted. Isolated hepatic primordial endoderm was found to differentiate to the epithelia of the hepatic parenchyma, bile ducts, and gall bladder under the influence of heterologous mesenchyme.

Abstract
A method is described for the preparation of outer and cytoplasmic membranes of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the outer membrane proteins characterized. Isolated outer and cytoplasmic membranes differed markedly in the content of 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonate (lipopolysaccharide) and phospholipid as well as in the localization of certain enzymes (NADH oxidase, succinate dehydrogenase, D-lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, and phospholipase), and also in the microscopic morphology. The outer membrane preparation showed activity neutralizing a certain bacteriocin or bacteriophages, whereas the cytoplasmic membrane preparation showed no neutralizing activity. The protein composition of membrane preparations from five different strains of P. aeruginosa [P14, M92 (PAO1), PAC1, P15, and M2008 (PAT)] were determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. More than 50 protein bands were detected in the cytoplasmic membrane preparation. The protein compositions of outer membranes from the five different strains were very similar: at least 6 major bands were found (apparent molecular weights: Band D, 50,000; band E, 45,000; band F, 33,000; bands G and H, 21,000; and band I, 8,000). The protein composition of outer membranes was affected by some physiological growth conditions. Some features of major outer membrane proteins were also studied. Band F showed anomalous migration on SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis depending on the solubilizing conditions or pretreatment with TCA. Band I seemed to be a protein analogous to the lipoprotein which had been found in the outer membrane of Escherichia coli.

Abstract
Allantoic epithelium and epithelium from different levels of the digestive tube of the guail embryo were grafted into chick embryo splanchnopleure so that these epitheliums would come into contact with the mesoderm of the developing host digestive tube at a variety of levels. Under these conditions, the allantoic epithelium develops into an epithelium corresponding to the level of the digestive tube at which it was grafted. By contrast, the presumptive fate of epithelium from the small intestine is not modified by the mesenchyme with which it becomes associated. Mesenchyme from the small intestine, on the other hand, always dictates the type of differentiation in epithelial grafts from other levels of the digestive tube.

Abstract
The mode of action of the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) on ovarian follicle growth was studied in hypophysectomized rats using the histologic, autoradiographic and histochemical techniques. The follicle growth was stimulated by the administration of both FSH and estrogen. The histologic finding of the follicle growth induced by the two hormones was different. Namely, after the administration of FSH, the theca layer was thick, but after the administration of estrogen, it was thin. 3H-thymidine and 3H-leucine were used to investigate cell division in a growing follicle. The uptake of 3H-thymidine and 3H-leucine by the theca layer was enhanced remarkably by FSH. On the other hand, the uptake of 3H-thymidine by the granulosa layer was enhanced by FSH or estrogen, while the grain count of granulosa cells was increased only by the administration of estrogen. Moreover, the administration of FSH resulted in an increase of the enzyme activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD), DELTA5-3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3beta-HSD) and alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) in the theca layer. Furthermore, the administration of FSH caused an increase in the serum estradiol and estriol of rats, whereas the administration of estrogen did not. It seems possible, therefore, that FSH stimulated proliferation of theca cells and produced estrogen. The results suggest that the estrogen produced by the theca cells might stimulate proliferation of granulosa cells; consequently, follicle growth might be induced.

Abstract
Alterations in the ribosomes of sucrose-dependent spectinomycin-resistant (Sucd-Spcr) mutants of Escherichia coli were studied. Subunit exchange experiments showed that 30S subunits were responsible for the resistance of ribosomes to spectinomycin in all Sucd-Spcr mutants tested. Proteins of 30S ribosomes were analyzed by carboxymethyl cellulose column chromatography based on their elution positions. Mutants YM22 and YM93 had an altered 30S ribosomal protein component, S5, and mutant YM50 had an altered protein, S4. Although a shift of elution position was not detected for all the 30S ribosomal proteins from mutant YM101, the amount of protein S3 was appreciably lowered in the isolated 30S subunits. A partial reconstitution experiment with protein S3 prepared from both the wild-type strain and YM101 revealed that the mutant had altered protein S3 which is responsible for the spectinomycin resistance. These alterations in 30S subunits are discussed in relation to the interaction between ribosomes and the cytoplasmic membrane.

Abstract
The effect of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and diethylstilbestrol (DES) on ovarian follicle growth was studied in hypophysectomized rats, using histologic, autoradiographic and histochemical techniques. The administration of FSH to immature hypophysectomized rats stimulated the follicle growth with thickening of the theca layer and repair of "deficiency cells". Although DES given to hypophysectomized rats also stimulated the follicle growth, the theca layer was relatively thin compared with that in FSH-treated rats. In order to detect cell division in a growing follicle, the number of labelled granulosa cells with tritiated thymidine as a proportion of the granulosa cells in a growing follicle were counted and the labelling indices of the granulosa cells were calculated. The labelling indices increased by the administration of FSH (p less than 0.05) or DES (p less than 0.05). The uptake of tritiated thymidine and leucine by the theca cells was enhanced only by FSH and was not stimulated by DES. The administration of FSH resulted in an increase of the histochemically demonstrable enzyme activity such as delta5-3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3beta-HSD) or alkaline phosphatase in the theca cells. In contrast, the administration of DES did not stimulate the enzyme activity of the theca cells. Furthermore, FSH stimulated a release of estradiol and estriol from the ovary of hypophysectomized rat, whereas DES did not. Although ovarian follicle growth was stimulated by both FSH and DES, the effect of the two hormones on the theca cells was quite different and the secretion of estrogen was stimulated by FSH. The results suggest that FSH induced follicle growth of the ovary might be mediated by estrogen produced by the theca cells.

Abstract
The induction of the prostate gland by testosterone or dihydrotestosterone was studied in urogenital sinuses from Wistar rat embryos explanted in organ culture. In normal development, prostatic rudiments appeared in the urogenital sinuses of 18-19 day male foetuses as epithelial buds projecting into the mesenchyme. Male urogenital sinuses from 17-5 and 18-5 day foetuses formed buds in control medium, and addition of testosterone or dihydrotestosterone increased their number and size. In contrast, sinuses from 15-5 and 16-5 day male foetuses did not form buds in the absence of androgens, while exposure to the hormones induced them de novo. A concentration of 0-0015 microgram testosterone/ml was sufficient to elicit prostatic buds. The same effect was seen after continuous treatment with testosterone or brief exposure to the hormone followed by cultivation in control medium. The development of the buds followed the same time sequence as in the organ in situ. Testosterone and dihydrotestosterone elicited prostatic buds in female sinuses from 15-5 to 18-5 day foetuses, but their response to androgens decreased with advancing foetal age. Male and female sinuses from 15-5 day foetuses did not respond to testosterone but formed buds after exposure to dihydrotestosterone. This difference was considered to be due to a low content or absence of 5alpha-reductase at this stage. Testes from 15-5 to 18-5 day foetuses grown in close contact with urogenital sinuses or explants of mature prostate glands induced prostatic buds or augmented the height of the prostatic epithelium. It was concluded that androgens are necessary for the initiation of the rat prostate gland and that the effect of testosterone is mediated via 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone. The onset of 5alpha-reductase synthesis is likely to occur between days 14 and 15 of foetal life. The early androgenic activity of the testes suggests that bud formation in the older male sinuses in the absence of androgens is due to exposure to endogenous testosterone before explanation.

Abstract
From ovaries dissected from developing and emerged adults of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, two substances having high molting hormone activity were isolated. One of these was identified as 2-deoxy-alpha-ecdysone by means of high-pressure liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Although this compound had previously been isolated from the fern Blechnum minus and postulated to be the precursor of alpha-ecdysone, it had not been obtained from insect material. The compound is also contained in the form of a conjugate in ovaries as well as in diapausing silkworm embryos.

Abstract
Incubation of Escherichia coli with spectinomycin caused the disappearance of a major protein from the cytoplasmic membrane. This protein, called "I-19", was not a ribosomal protein. Its disappearance was not a result of the direct action of spectinomycin on the cytoplasmic membrane, but a result of its action on ribosomes. The disappearance was specifically induced by spectinomycin, and other antibiotics such as neomycin, erythromycin, and chloramphenicol had no effect. Although growth was not required for spectinomycin-induced disappearance of protein I-19 from the cytoplasmic membrane, the disappearance was not observed under conditions where protein synthesis was inhibited completely either by the addition of chloramphenicol or by cooling in ice. It is suggested that at least some ribosomes interact with the cytoplasmic membrane and that a modification of the mode of interaction through the action of spectinomycin on ribosomes caused the deletion of membrane protein I-19.

Abstract
The long-term prognosis of 185 children with epilepsy, who continued to attend the Clinic for Epileptic Children, the Department of Pediatrics, the University of Tokyo, beyond the age of 18 years, was reported. The length of follow-up varied from three to 20 years, but most of them were followed longer than 10 years. The presumed etiology in these children was divided into a cryptogenic group (124, 67.0%) and a symptomatic group (61). The types of seizures were classified into grand mal (86 cases), focal seizure (27), petit mal absence (4), psychomotro seizure (5), infantile spasms (7), and so on. It may be noted that the highest frequency of grand mal was demonstrated, while the incidences of infantile spasms, myoclonic seizure, and akinetic seizure were low in the series. Only 28 children (15.1%) had complications of physical and/or mental handicaps. The follow-up study revealed that 140 patients (75.7%) had been seizure-free in the last 12 months. One hundred and fifteen of them had no seizures for five years or longer. On the other hand, electroencephalographic abnormalities generally continued for a long time after disappearance of seizures. Eightly-one of well-controlled patients were gradually decreasing the doses of anticonvulsants. As for seizure types, it is noted that focal seizure, psychomotor seizure, and infantile spasms were relatively difficult to be controlled. Except for 27 patients, most of them attended normal schools, including junior colleges or universities, and engaged in various occupations. Fifteen female patients had already married, and out of 13 babies who were born from these patients, there were one with ventricular septal defect, one with mental deficiency, and one with anencephaly, while the rest were entirely normal. Additional problems on withdrawal of anticonvulsants after a long-term seizure-free period, and what a medical system should be for treatment of epilepsy in children up to their adulthood were discussed.

Abstract
In our studies on patients with head injury, it was noted that there are some correlations between their clinical courses and the urinary excretion of creatine (cr), creatinine (Crn), 17-ketosteroid and 17-hydroxycorticosteroid. We observed the high urinary excretion of Cr in patients with severe head injury while almost negative in a mild case. We reported those facts in 1974. Also noted in patients with head injury is the relationship between the enzyme-activities (GOT, GPT, LDH and CPK) in the cerebrospinal fluid and their clinical courses. In this paper, we reported 34 cases of head injured patients (simple type: 2, concussion: 9, contusion: 8, acute intracranial hematoma: 7 and chronic intra-cranial hematoma: 8). The control values of CSF enzyme-activities were determined in these 14 cases (simple head injury, whip-lash injury and osteoma of the skull) as GOT less that 15, GPT less than 7, LDH less than 12 and CPK less than 8 units. In the moderate cases, a slight increase in activities of 4 enzymes in CSF were observed, while in severe or comatose cases, the enzyme-activities (especially LDH and CPK) were greater than in the controls. In the dead cases these values were five times as high as the normal case. In the patients recovering from a serious stage, these activities decreased to normal. High CSF enzyme-levels tend to indicate a poor prognosis and low levels a favorable progrosis. In the patients with a significant elevation of CSF enzymes, a high urinary excretion of Cr [normal range: 0-150 (ca. 50)mg/day] was often observed. There was no apparent correlation between the enzyme level in CSF and that in serum and the increase or decrease of these 4 enzymes are not always proprotionate with each other. As reported by Green (1958) and Lending (1961), cerebral cell necrosis and increased permeability of BLB, BBB or cerebral cell membrane can be related to the increase of enzymeactivities. With these observations, it can be considered that severe head injury gives influence on metabolic function in the hypothalamus and may cause in the levels of CSF enzymes and/or the urinary excretions of Cr, Crn and corticosteroids. And the examinations of enzyme activities in the patients with head injury may become a useful aid to make an outlook of their clinical coure and prognosis.

Abstract
The os penis in mice and rats is composed of a proximal intramembranous and endochondral osseous element and a distal cartilaginous, ossifying element. Female mice, but not rats, have a small os clitoridis which corresponds to the intramembranous part of the proximal element of the os penis. In mice of either sex a dense mesenchymatous formation ventral to the urethra is the anlage for the bones of the external genitalia. In the early postnatal period the proximal part of the os penis develops as bone at the outer and as cartilage at the basal end of the anlage, while in females a minute focus of ossification differentiates into the small os clitoridis without passing through a cartilaginous phase. The distal element of the os penis is formed later than the proximal rod and grows at a slower rate. Neonatal treatment with an antiandrogen inhibits the increase in size and calcification of the os penis. Neonatal castration is an even more effective inhibitor. Neonatal treatment with testosterone or dihydrotestosterone, but not with oestradiol, stimulates the growth of the bony proximal os clitoridis, but induces only a rudimentary collagenous distal element. The differences between mice and rats in the response of the tissues of the clitoris to androgenic treatment are discussed, particularly as regards the differentiation of proximal and distal elements.

Abstract
Alterations in cytoplasmic membrane and ribosomes from sucrose-dependent spectinomycin-resistant (Sucd-Spcr) mutants of Escherichia coli, mutants that are resistant to spectinomycin in the presence of 20% sucrose but sensitive in the absence of sucrose, were studied. The protein composition of cytoplasmic membrane was analyzed by gel electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gel containing 8 M urea and 0.5% sodium dodecyl sulfate, which assured the reproducible separation of 28 protein bands. A major protein band, I-19, was missing in all cytoplasmic membrane preparations from 10 Sucd-Spcr mutants. Besides protein I-19, proteins I-13 and I-24 were missing in some mutants. On the other hand, the protein composition of cytoplasmic membrane from a sucrose-independent spectinomycin-resistant mutant was indistinguishable from that from the wild-type strain. The polypeptide synthetic activity of ribosomes from Sucd-Spcr mutants was resistant to spectinomycin. Studies on a revertant obtained from one of these mutants without any selection for sensitivity to spectinomycin revealed that a single mutation was responsible for both the ribosomal alteration, i.e., spectinomycin resistance, and the lack of protein I-19 in the cytoplasmic membrane. Studies on a transductant obtained with a Sucd-SPcr mutant as the donor also confirmed the single-mutation concept. It was concluded that in Sucd-SPcr mutants an alteration in the ribosomes caused the deletion of protein I-19 from cytoplasmic membrane.

Abstract
The effect of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) on the follicular growth in the ovary of the hypophysectomized rat was investigated using autoradiography. The numbers of DNA-synthesizing nuclei in the granulosa cell were measured by autoradiography after flashlabelling with tritiated (3-H) thymidine. The frequency of 3-H-thymidine labelled nuclei in the granulosa cell enhanced in the presence of FSH. In contrast, LH had no significant effect on thymidine uptake. The result suggests that FSH stimulates follicle cell division, whereas LH does not.
