[Mortality by burns in children (author's transl)]

The mortality rate among 1,490 children, aged zero to fourteen years, hospitalized in the Burns Unit of Departament of Plastic Surgery in Ciudad Sanitaria de la Seguridad Social de Sevilla is studied. Analysis determined death probabilities for each case according to percentage of burned surface and age, and also LD50 in different age groups. The mortality analysis showed lethal factors related with primary care and evacuation, responsible for a decrease in survival probabilities of the children. Children with severe burns must be hospitalized in special units, which must have a high level of training in hydroelectrolitics disturbances and surgical management of this type of patients, who require homo or xenografts frequently.

Cancer morbidity and mortality among the insured population of the Social Security Institute of Antioquia, Colombia

Data of incidence and mortality of cancers of various sites for a population of workers covered by the Social Security Institute of Antioquia are reported and compared with other available data.

Based on their experience of 1,870 burned children, authors point out the main etiologic factors involved and discuss the preventive actions among which an improvement of the familial income and an adequate diffusion of safety rules seem to be the most relevant.

[Myxoma of the left ventricle. Apropos of a successfully operated case]

Left ventricular myxomata are exceptional (12 published cases). In the case reported, the clinical picture included emboli (cerebral and coronary) and syncope. Auscultation, the electrocardiogram and the phonomechanocardiographic tracings suggested an impaired left ventricular ejection, while the left ventriculography demonstrated the tumour and the coronary arteriography its vascular relationship with the right coronary artery. Cure was obtained by surgical removal. In that respect, an attempt was made to describe the clinical and paraclinical bases for the diagnosis of the myxomata of the left ventricle.
