The further investigation on the gastric acid secretion in the primary hyperparathyroidism

The gastric acid output was studied in the 11 patients of hyperparathyroidism before and after parathyroidectomy. The gastric acid output before operation was almost equal to the normal control in our hospital. After the correction of serum calcium by parathyroidectomy, the gastric acid output and serum gastrin were decreased. The decreased gastric acid output was recovered as the days passed since operation and approached to the preoperative level. The acid output in hyperparathyroidism was less in the case whose activity of alkaline phosphatase was more, which suggested that the calcium deposition on gastric mucosa might damage the parietal cell as the result of long lasting hypercalcemia.

Carcinogenicity of 2-(2-furyl)-3-(5-nitro-2-furyl)acrylamide (AF-2) fed to female Sprague-Dawley rats

The carcinogenicity of 2-(2-furyl)-3-(5-nitro-5-furyl)acrylamide (AF-2) was investigated by administering it orally to Sprague-Dawley female weanling rats in a grain diet at a dose of 0.2% for 46 weeks, followed by 20 weeks of unmedicated control diet. The total mean cumulative dose of AF-2 was 10.1 g (41.6 mmol) per rat during the 46 weeks of the experiment. Weight gains of rats fed AF-2 was comparable to that of unmedicated control rats. Survival of rats fed AF-2 was 52 +/- 12 (SD) weeds compared to 65 +/- 5 weeks for the unmedicated controls (P less than 0.001). Twenty-four of 29 rats fed AF-2 developed multiple breast tumors, 15 of which were adenocarcinomas. Two of 29 unmedicated control rats had single fibroadenomas of the breast.

Experimental carcinoma of the biliary tract induced in dogs by N-ethyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine

The present study was designed to produce the experimental carcinoma of the biliary tract in dogs. Tube cholecystostomy was constructed in 8 mongrel dogs and 5-10 ml of 0.7-1.0 mg/ml solution of N-ethyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (ENNG) was administered through the tube every day for the maximum period of 180 days. As the results: The experiment had to be cut off in 7 dogs (5 dogs: The tube was inadvertently pulled out. 2 dogs: died of general weakness). Pathological changes were observed in one dog given ENNG for 180 days and sacrificed at 372 days after the beginning of the experiment. Macroscopically, scattered foci of flat elevation of the mucosa were observed in the entire mucosal surface of common bile duct and a tiny polypoid lesion at the terminal protion. A tiny polypoid projection was adenocarcinoma confined to the mucosa, and areas of flat elevation showed marked hyperplasia of mucosa with partial atypical proliferation. No remarkable findings were noted in other organs.

The application of caerulein to cholangiography

Caerulein was applied to oral cholecystography and the opacity of the common bile duct was evaluated at intervals. To 127 subjects whose gallbladder had been visualized by cholecystography was administered caerulein by intramuscular route in a dose of 0.2 mug per kg of body weight. As a result: 1. The visualization of the common bile duct reached its maximum 15 minutes after administration of caerulein (52% of the subjects); in total, 62.2% of the subjects responded to this cholecystography. 2. The visualization by caerulein was superior to that by the yolk both in its rate and intensity. 3. The cholangiogram taken after administration of caerulein was preferably available for diagnosis of bile duct lesions. Caerulein used for a pretreatment of drip infusion cholangiography (DIC) remarkably improved the picture in 3 of the 10 subjects in whom DIC alone had failed to show the bile duct. Thus, the application of caerulein to cholangiography facilitated diagnosis of bile duct lesions.

Fine structure of the olfactory bulb in the goldfish, Carassius auratus

Ultrastructural studies have aided in identifying the principal cell types and the layers of the olfactory bulb in goldfish. The concentrically arranged four layers are: the primary olfactory nerve layer (most peripheral), the glomerular layer, the mitral cell layer, and the granule cell layer (deepest). Three types of cell bodies were differentiated by their size and cytoplasmic organelles: mitral cells, granule cells and short axon cells. The axons of the primary olfactory nerve formed synaptic contacts with mitral cell dendrites in the glomeruli. Reciprocal synapses were observed between the granule cell dendrites and the mitral cell dendrites in the mitral cell layer. Terminals of the centrifugal fibers forming synaptic contacts with the granule cell dendrites were identified in the granule cell layer. The relationships between the cellular and synaptic organizations and the neural mechanism of olfaction are discussed.

Change in the mixed function oxidase system of liver microsomes in rats treated with 3'-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene

The mixed function oxidase systems of plasma membranes, the Golgi apparatus, and smooth and rough endoplasmic reticula of the livers of rats fed on a standard diet containing 0.06% (w/w) 3'-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene were investigated. The components and activities of the mixed function oxidase systems of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus were especially reduced by the carcinogen. The activities for hydroxylation of anilines and demethylation of p-nitroanisole and the contents of cytochromes P-450 and b5 of the submicrosomal fractions of the rats decreased considerably more than the activities of NADH- and NADPH-ferricyanide reductases. More than 90% of the ferri-cytochrome P-450 content of the 3'-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene induced microsomes at 20 K was in the low spin form.

The fine structure of the parotid gland of the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones meridianus

The parotid gland of the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones meridianus, was examined by the electron microscopy. A peculiar feature of the serous acinar cells in that mature secretory granules have a bipartite substructure consisting of a centrally-located large dense homogeneous core and the peripheral rim of a less dense, fibrillo-granular matrix. The latter is histochemically revealed to be rich in acid mucosubstance while the former may be mainly composed of zymogenic materials because of its dense homogeneous texture. Such a heterogeneity of granule content is detectable in all the materials examined, regardless of fixation and staining methods and of animal age. Another characteristic feature of the gland is observable in the duct cells, which provide the basal hemidesmosomes attached with microfilaments and the network system of agranular cytoplasmic tubules, closely related to the basal plasma membrane. Functional significance of these structures is discussed.
