Abstract
We present measurements of the B --> eta(')K branching fractions; for B(+) --> eta(')K(+) we measure also the time-integrated charge asymmetry Alpha(ch), and for B(0) --> eta(')K(0)(S) the time-dependent CP-violation parameters S and C. The data sample corresponds to 232 x 10(6) BB pairs produced by e(+)e(-) annihilation at the Upsilon (4S). The results are Beta(B --> eta(')K(+)) = (68.9 +/- 2.0 +/- 3.2) x 10(-6), Beta(B(0) --> eta(')K(0)) = (67.4 +/- 3.2) x 10(-6), Alpha(ch) = 0.033 +/- 0.028 +/- 0.005, S = 0.30 +/- 0.140 +/- 0.02, and C = -0.21 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.02, where the first error quoted is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract
Based on a sample of 227 x 10(6) BB pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC, we measure the branching fraction B(B0-->pi(0)pi(0))=(1.17+/-0.32+/-0.10)x10(-6), and the asymmetry Cpi(0)(pi(0))=-0.12+/-0.56+/-0.06. The B0-->pi(0)pi(0) signal has a significance of 5.0 sigma. We also measure B(B+-->pi(+)pi(0))=(5.8+/-0.6+/-0.4)x10(-6), B(B+-->K+pi(0))=(12.0+/-0.7+/-0.6)x10(-6), and the charge asymmetries Api(+)(pi(0))=-0.01+/-0.10+/-0.02 and AK+(pi(0))=0.06+/-0.06+/-0.01. Using isospin relations, we find an upper bound on the angle difference |alpha-alpha(eff)| of 35 degrees at the 90% C.L.

Abstract
We search for the factorization-suppressed decays B-->chi(c0)K(*) and B-->chi(c2)K(*), with chi(c0) and chi(c2) decaying into J/psi gamma, using a sample of 124 x 10(6) BB events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We find no significant signal and set upper bounds for the branching fractions.

Abstract
Topical glucocorticoids have always been considered first-line drugs for inflammatory diseases of the skin and bronchial system. Applied systemically, glucocorticoids are used for severe inflammatory and immunological diseases and the inhibition of transplant rejection. Owing to the progress in molecular pharmacology, the knowledge of the mechanism of action has increased during the last years. Besides distinct genomic targets, which are due to the activation of specific cytoplasmatic receptors resulting in the (trans-) activation or (trans-) repression of target genes, there are non-genomic effects on the basis of the interference with membrane-associated receptors as well as with membrane lipids. In fact, various glucocorticoids appear to differ with respect to the relative influence on these targets. Thus, the extended knowledge of glucocorticoid-induced cellular signalling should allow the design and development of even more specifically acting drugs - as it has been obtained with other steroids, e.g. estrogens for osteoporosis prevention.

Abstract
A resonant diffraction grating comprising a mirror, a dielectric layer and a high index corrugation at the layer-air interface is shown to exhibit off-Littrow the record diffraction efficiency of 99% in the -1st reflected order at 1064 nm wavelength thanks to the excitation of a leaky mode of the layer. Such high figure is obtained by a grating 5 to 10 times shallower than in current attempts to realize high efficiency all-dielectric gratings.

Abstract
We report measurements of branching fractions and charge asymmetries of exclusive decays of neutral and charged B mesons into two-body final states containing a charmonium state and a light strange meson. The charmonium mesons considered are J/psi, psi(2S) and chi(c1), and the light meson is either K or K(*). We use a sample of about 124x10(6) BB pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.

Abstract
We search for the decay B0-->rho(0)rho(0) in a data sample of about 227x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider at SLAC. We find no significant signal and set an upper limit of 1.1x10(-6) at 90% C.L. on the branching fraction. As a result, the uncertainty due to penguin contributions on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity angle alpha measured in B-->rhorho decays is decreased to 11 degrees at 68% C.L.

Abstract
There has been marked interest in minimally-invasive, image-guided radiofrequency (RF) tumour ablation (i.e. coagulating tumour using short duration heating ( < 15 min) by directly applying temperatures > 50 degrees C via needle electrodes) to treat focal liver, renal, breast, bone and lung tumours. In spite of advances in RF technology and improved understanding of tumour biophysiology that now enable experimental treatment of tumours up to 5cm, investigators have been unable to achieve complete ablation in many cases, particularly at the tumour margins and adjacent to blood vessels. One strategy for overcoming these limitations has been to take advantage of complementary interactions between RF thermal ablation and chemotherapy, particularly liposomal doxorubicin preparations, to attempt more complete tumour destruction. This paper will review published laboratory investigations demonstrating that this combined treatment paradigm has the unique potential both to potentiate preferential delivery of cytotoxic agents in liposome vehicles and to maximize the completeness of ablation of a treated tumour. New confirmatory data describing increased tumour destruction with RF ablation combined with different liposome preparations, documenting increased lipid peroxidation and expanding on previously published tumour growth studies is presented. Additionally, early clinical data including a randomized, pilot clinical study on 10 patients with primary and metastatic liver tumours, in which a non-optimized combination of RF ablation and IV liposomal doxorubicin (Doxil) increased the volume of tumour destruction 25-30% compared to RF alone, will also be described in detail.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS The aim of this study was to investigate molecular mechanisms of glucose-induced changes in islets of Langerhans by analysing global changes in protein patterns of islets exposed to elevated glucose concentrations. METHODS Islets were isolated from C57BL/6J mice and used either directly or after exposure to 11 mmol/l glucose for 24 h. Islet protein profiles were obtained by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, and protein spots were identified by peptide mass fingerprinting using mass spectrometry. RESULTS Two-dimensional gels of freshly isolated islets and islets exposed to 11 mmol/l glucose contained 1,074 and 1,254 spots, respectively. The number of differentially expressed spots was 379, with 20 spots appearing as new proteins in islets exposed to 11 mmol/l glucose. We identified 124 spots corresponding to 77 protein entries and generated a reference map from freshly isolated islets. Actin, alpha enolase, cytokeratin 8, endoplasmin, glucose-regulated proteins, heat shock proteins, peroxiredoxins, prohormone convertase 2, protein disulphide isomerase, superoxide dismutase, tubulin, and V-type H+ -ATPase (V1 subunit A) were upregulated in islets exposed to 11 mmol/l glucose. In contrast, exocrine proteins and secretagogin were downregulated in these islets compared with in freshly isolated islets. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION The islet proteome approach revealed simultaneous changes in protein patterns of islets exposed to elevated glucose concentrations, indicating enhanced insulin synthesis, granular mobilisation and maturation, and increased stress response. The changes may be of relevance for the understanding of altered islet function in the hyperglycaemic state. It is expected that the islet reference map will become an important tool for dissecting multifactorial islet processes.

Abstract
Lafora disease (LD) is the most common teenage-onset progressive myoclonus epilepsy. It is caused by recessive mutations in the EPM2A or EPM2B genes. The authors describe a family with three affected members with no mutations in either gene. Linkage and haplotype analyses exclude both loci from causative involvement in this family. Therefore, a third LD locus is predicted. Its identification will be a crucial element in the understanding of the biochemical pathway underlying the generation of Lafora bodies and LD.

Abstract
Cell differentiation and myelination involve a fine balance between stasis and programmed cell death, yet the genes that regulate this have not been clearly defined. We therefore studied two key gene products involved in oligodendrocyte plasma membrane lipid metabolism and their antagonistic role in ceramide-mediated cell death signaling. Overexpression of palmitoyl:protein thioesterase (PPT1; verified by Western blot of the V5-tagged protein and increased enzyme activity) resulted in decreased ceramide in the detergent-resistant microdomain (DRM, or raft) relative to cholesterol and sphingomyelin (SM). This PPT1 overexpression also resulted in protection against cell death induced by either staurosporine or C(2)-ceramide. In contrast, overexpression of neutral sphingomyelinase 2 (NSMase2; verified by Western blot of the FLAG-tagged protein and increased enzyme activity) resulted in increased membrane NSMase and increased ceramide in rafts relative to cholesterol and SM. The difference in SM and ceramide turnover was quantitated by [(3)H]palmitate pulse-chase labeling. Furthermore, when NBD-SM was added to cells, it was hydrolyzed by NSMase-transfected cells at more than twofold the rate in untransfected cells. NSMase2 overexpression enhanced cell death induced by staurosporine or C(2)-ceramide, in contrast to the protective effect of PPT1 overexpression. The presence of a fraction of both PPT1 and NSMase2 in rafts together with their substrates (palmitoylated proteins and SM, respectively) suggests a mechanism for dynamic palmitoylation/depalmitoylation of certain proteins in controlling cell death via NSMase activation.

Abstract
We have compared the density of nerve fibres in the synovium in club foot with that of specimens obtained from the synovium of the hip at operations for developmental dysplasia. The study focused on the sensory neuropeptides substance P; calcitonin gene-related peptide; protein gene product 9.5, a general marker for mature peripheral nerve fibres; and growth associated protein 43, a neuronal marker for new or regenerating nerve fibres. In order to establish whether there might be any inherent difference we analysed the density of calcitonin gene-related peptide-positive nerve fibres in the hip and ankle joints in young rats. Semi-quantitative analysis showed a significant reduction in the number of sensory and mature nerve fibres in the synovium in club foot compared with the control hips. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) positive fibres were reduced by 28%, substance P-positive fibres by 36% and protein gene product 9.5-positive fibres by 52% in club foot. The growth associated protein 43-positive fibres also seemed to be less in six samples of club foot. No difference in the density of CGRP-positive nerve fibres was observed in the synovium between ankle and hip joints in rats. The lack of sensory input may be responsible for the fibrosis and soft-tissue contractures associated with idiopathic club foot.

Abstract
Angiomyolipoma is uncommon benign tumor of the kidney. Bilateral and multiple lesions are associated with tuberous sclerosis. We report a case with bilateral giant angiomyolipomas in a patient who had no other features of tuberous sclerosis. In this case, the involvement of the kidneys was diffuse rather than usual well-circumscribed lesions.

The effect of vitamin D status on the severity of bone disease and on the other features of primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) in a vitamin D deficient region. J Endocrinol Invest 2004; 27:807-12. Abstract
A clear relationship between vitamin D status and the clinical indices of primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) severity has not been convincingly established. We proposed that such a relationship might exist, in so far as vitamin D deficiency could contribute to the severity of metabolic bone disease and promote the growth of the parathyroid tumor. Accordingly, we undertook a retrospective study and analyzed the clinical, biochemical, radiological and histopathological findings in a group of 49 patients who underwent parathyroidectomy at our center. Patients who had skeletal X-rays were grouped, according to their X-ray findings, in group A (19 patients; 45%) if they had severe bone changes, or group B (23 patients; 55%) if they had mild or no bone changes. Patients were also stratified according to their 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) levels in tertiles. The 2 groups were compared using Fisher's exact test or analysis of variance as appropriate. Group A patients were younger (p=0.001), had more musculoskeletal symptoms (p=0.0003), and complained more frequently of fatigue (p=0.02). They had higher alkaline phosphatase (AP; p=0.0002), PTH index (p=0.0007), and serum Ca level (p=0.006). There were more patients from the lower and middle vitamin D tertiles and fewer patients from the upper vitamin D tertile in group A (p=0.02). Post-operative severe hypo-calcemia was more prevalent in group A patients (p<0.0001). Resected parathyroid tumors were larger in size in group A patients (p=0.01), and weighed more (p=0.01). There was a positive correlation between the weight of the parathyroid tumor and the PTH index (p=0.002), and AP level (p=0.0007). We concluded that vitamin D deficiency is a contributing factor to both the severity of bone disease and the high activity of parathyroid tumors seen in many patients with pHPT in vitamin D deficient regions.

Abstract
We measure the branching fraction for the charmless semi-inclusive process B --> eta'Xs, where the eta' meson has a momentum in the range 2.0 to 2.7 GeV/c in the upsilon4S center-of-mass frame and Xs represents a system comprising a kaon and zero to four pions. We find B(B --> eta'Xs) = [3.9 +/- 0.8(stat) +/- 0.5(syst) +/- 0.8(model)] x 10(-4). We also obtain the Xs mass spectrum and find that it fits models predicting high masses.
