Abstract
Although CP violation in the B meson system has been well established by the B factories, there has been no direct observation of time-reversal violation. The decays of entangled neutral B mesons into definite flavor states (B(0) or B(0)), and J/ψK(L)(0) or ccK(S)(0) final states (referred to as B(+) or B(-)), allow comparisons between the probabilities of four pairs of T-conjugated transitions, for example, B(0) → B(-) and B(-) → B(0), as a function of the time difference between the two B decays. Using 468 × 10(6) BB pairs produced in Υ(4S) decays collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC, we measure T-violating parameters in the time evolution of neutral B mesons, yielding ΔS(T)(+) = -1.37 ± 0.14(stat) ± 0.06(syst) and ΔS(T)(-) = 1.17 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.11(syst). These nonzero results represent the first direct observation of T violation through the exchange of initial and final states in transitions that can only be connected by a T-symmetry transformation.

Abstract
The photon spectrum in the inclusive electromagnetic radiative decays of the B meson, B → X(s)γ plus B → X(d)γ, is studied using a data sample of (382.8 ± 4.2) × 10(6)Υ(4S) → BB decays collected by the BABAR experiment at SLAC. The spectrum is used to extract the branching fraction B(B → X(s)γ) = (3.21 ± 0.33) × 10(-4) for E(γ) >1.8 GeV and the direct CP asymmetry A(CP) (B → X(s+d)γ) = 0.057 ± 0.063. The effects of detector resolution and Doppler smearing are unfolded to measure the photon energy spectrum in the B meson rest frame.

Abstract
In fall, 2008, leaf spots were observed during the flowering stage of the Zhong Huang 13 cultivar of soybean in the fields of Anhui Province, China. The leaf spots were irregularly shaped, necrotic, brown-black, and surrounded by yellow halos. Often, on a given leaf, several spots joined one another to form a large blighted area. Finally, those leaves turned yellow followed by defoliation. Damaged leaves showed scattered black spots (i.e., numerous pycnidia) on the lower side. Fresh material was collected from infected plants and a single spore of the putative causal pathogen was isolated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 25°C during a 12-h dark/light cycle. The isolate produced a white fungal colony and black pycnidia after 30 days. The pycnidia are characterized as globose, dark brown-black, and distinctly papillate, with ostiolar setae, and are more or less straight, unbranched, and tapered at the apex. The conidia are clavate, hyaline, mostly with three transverse septa per cell; conidia are either straight or slightly bent, obviously guttulate, and 16 to 29 × 2.5 to 3.5 μm. This pathogen is similar to other Aristastoma guttulosum Sutton (1964), but with the following differences: (a) it has more than 10 versus 4 to 9 setae; (b) conidia are 16 to 29 × 2.5 to 3.5 μm versus 32 to 42 × 3.9 to 4.6 μm as reported for A. guttulosum (1). Conidia of the Chinese isolate were used to inoculate leaves of soybean. Five soybean leaves from potted plants, 1 month old, were sprayed with a suspension of conidia in water. Conidia were harvested from PDA cultures and the suspension was adjusted to 3 × 105 conidia/ml with a hemocytometer. Five leaves were sprayed with sterile distilled water as controls. Inoculated plants were kept in the greenhouse. All five of the inoculated leaves displayed the same symptoms observed in the fields. The symptoms developed initially as brown pinhead spots on the upper side of the leaves, gradually increasing to large brown spots. These spots were irregularly shaped, brown and necrotic in the center and surrounded by a yellow halo. Black pycnidia appeared after 1 week whereas the controls remained asymptomatic. The pathogen was reisolated from the inoculated soybean leaves according to standard Koch's postulates. Primers ITS1 and ITS4 were used in PCR reactions to amplify the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) (3). Sequencing was performed using the same primers. The ITS sequence (GenBank Accession No. JF825548.1) for this pathogen (587 bp) was submitted to a BLAST search in GenBank. Since the ITS sequence of the genus Aristastoma has never been previously submitted, results did not show high similarity with any extant GenBank sequences. The genus Aristastoma Tehon (1933) was described by Tehon (2). Five of the species in this genus were described by Sutton (1). The number of septate conidium and lack of obvious guttulate within the conidium are the morphological basis to separate these five species. Morphological features of the pathogen from soybean leaves in China were slightly different from those of A. guttulosum. To our knowledge, this is the first report of leaf spot caused by A. guttulosum on soybean in China. References: (1) B. C. Sutton. Mycological Papers. 97:10, 1964. (2) L. R. Tehon. Abstract
BACKGROUND To study the roles of adenosine deaminase (ADA) , interferon gamma ( IFN-gamma) and carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) for diagnosis of tuberculous and neoplastic pleural effusion. METHODS ADA , IFN-gamma and CEA activity in the serum and pleural fluid were detected in 67 patients with pleural effusion by the method of Guisti , a solid-phase enzyme-immunoassay employing the multiple antibody sandwich principle , and radioimmunoassay respectively. RESULTS The mean ADA and IFN-gamma concentration in the tuberculous pleural effusion differed significantly from those in the neoplastic pleural effusion ( P < 0. 001) . The mean CEA concentration in the serum and pleural fluid with the neoplastic pleural effusion differed from those with the tuberculous pleural effusion ( P < 0. 05) . The sensitivity of ADA (with a diagnostic threshold of 40 U/L) and IFN-gamma(threshold of 140 pg/ mL) for tuberculosis was 88 % and 96 % respectively , the specificity was 85. 71 % and 97. 62 % , and diagnostic index was 73. 71 % and 93. 62 %. Using the ADA (with below 40 U/L) and IFN-gamma (below 140 pg/mL) and CEA (above 15mug/L) , we achieved a specificity of 95. 95 %for diagnosis of neoplastic pleural effusion. CONCLUSIONS ADA , IFN-gamma and CEA are useful parameters in differential diagnosis of tuberculous and neoplastic pleural effusion.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate changes in national prevalence, severity and management rates of asthma in Australian general practice from 1990 to 2003. METHODS A comparative study of general practitioner (GP) encounters with asthma patients, in cross sectional surveys from 1990-91 and 1998-2003. Main outcome measures were relative rates of asthma management, prevalence and severity of asthma. RESULTS The prevalence of asthma remained constant between 1999 and 2002. Prevalence in children was significantly higher (18.4%) than in adults (13.2%) (p < 0.0001). The asthma management rate fell by 0.5 (from 3.7 to 3.2) per 100 encounters between 1990-91 and 1998 (8 years), and by a further 0.5 (from 3.2 to 2.7) per 100 encounters between 1998 and 2003 (5 years) suggesting an accelerating rate of decrease in the general practice asthma management rate over time. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that Australians attending general practice may be gaining better control of their asthma.

Abstract
Based on the full BABAR data sample, we report improved measurements of the ratios R(D(*))=B(B[over ¯]→D(*)τ(-)ν[over ¯](τ))/B(B[over ¯]→D(*)ℓ(ℓ)(-)ν[over ¯](ℓ)), where ℓ is either e or μ. These ratios are sensitive to new physics contributions in the form of a charged Higgs boson. We measure R(D)=0.440±0.058±0.042 and R(D(*))=0.332±0.024±0.018, which exceed the standard model expectations by 2.0σ and 2.7σ, respectively. Taken together, our results disagree with these expectations at the 3.4σ level. This excess cannot be explained by a charged Higgs boson in the type II two-Higgs-doublet model.

Abstract
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an Epstein-Barr virus-associated malignancy most common in East Asia and Africa. Radiotherapy and cisplatin-based chemotherapy are the main treatment options. Unfortunately, disease response to concurrent chemoradiotherapy varies among patients with NPC, and many cases are resistant to cisplatin. Increased DNA damage repair is one of the mechanisms contributing to this resistance. Jab1/CSN5 is a multifunctional protein that participates in controlling cell proliferation and the stability of multiple proteins. Jab1 overexpression has been found to correlate with poor prognosis in several tumor types. However, the biological significance of Jab1 activity in response to cancer treatment is unclear. In this study, we used three NPC cell lines (CNE1, CNE2, and HONE1) to investigate the hypothesis that Jab1 positively regulates the DNA repair protein Rad51 and, in turn, cellular response to treatment with DNA-damaging agents such as cisplatin, ionizing radiation (IR) and ultraviolet (UV). We found that Jab1 was overexpressed in two relatively cisplatin-, IR- and UV-resistant NPC cell lines, and knocking down its expression conferred sensitivity to cisplatin, IR and UV. By contrast, exogenous Jab1 expression enhanced the resistance of NPC cells to cisplatin, IR and UV Moreover, we provide a mechanism by which Jab1 positively regulated Rad51 through p53-dependent pathway, and increased ectopic expression of Rad51 conferred cellular resistance to cisplatin, IR and UV in Jab1-deficient cells. Taken together, our findings suggest that Jab1 plays an important role in the cellular response to cisplatin and irradiation by regulating DNA damage and repair pathways. Therefore, Jab1 is a novel biomarker for predicting the outcome of patients with NPC who are treated with DNA-damaging agents.

Abstract
In this paper, a drainage experiment of water between a borosilicate sphere and a microstructured surface constituted by regularly spaced pillars is presented. The microstructured surface has two parts: on one part the liquid forms a Cassie interface and on the second it forms a Wenzel interface. The measured hydrodynamic drag force is larger on the Cassie part compared to the Wenzel part. Furthermore, for the Cassie part, from the hydrodynamic drag force measurements on a pillar and between pillars the corresponding local slip lengths have been extracted. The area average slip length on the surface is in agreement with the value expected by Philip's equation.

Abstract
Recent astrophysical and terrestrial experiments have motivated the proposal of a dark sector with GeV-scale gauge boson force carriers and new Higgs bosons. We present a search for a dark Higgs boson using 516 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector. We do not observe a significant signal and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of the standard model-dark-sector mixing angle and the dark-sector coupling constant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS The use of natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) for gastroenterostomy has been previously reported, but it remains technically challenging and additional assistance is often needed. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a novel method for the creation of a gastroenterostomy using NOTES with an occluder. METHODS Transgastric endoscopic gastroenterostomy was performed in 12 healthy female dogs using a therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscope and a partially covered occluder. The occluder was removed with a snare 1 week later. The patency of the gastroenterostomy was confirmed by endoscopy, contrast radiological study, necropsy, and histological examination after 2 weeks. RESULTS NOTES gastroenterostomy with an occluder was successful in all 12 dogs. The mean operative time was 32.3 ± 10.3 min (range 20.3 - 53.5). One dog (the first; 8.3 %) died 4 days after the operation of severe intra-abdominal infection due to incorrect deployment of the occluder and poor bowel preparation. Minor bleeding occurred at the anastomosis after removal of the occluder in two of the remaining dogs (18.2 %). Necropsy revealed postoperative adhesions that had developed at the anastomotic site in one dog (9.1 %). No anastomotic leakage or intestinal obstruction was observed. Complete healing of the anastomosis was confirmed on histological evaluation. CONCLUSION Gastroenterostomy performed entirely by NOTES using an occluder was technically feasible in this survival animal model.

Association of angiotensin I converting enzyme, angiotensin II type 1 receptor and angiotensin I converting enzyme 2 gene polymorphisms with the dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetic patients of Chinese Han origin. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether the genetic polymorphisms in the angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) (insertion/ deletion, or I/D), angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) (rs5186), and ACE2 (rs2285666) could be associated with dyslipidemia in Type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients of Chinese Han origin. DESIGN AND METHODS The above 3 polymorphisms were genotyped in a total of 282 patients with T2D and dyslipidemia (Group A), 182 patients with T2D but without dyslipidemia (Group B), and 324 healthy controls. The association between a certain polymorphism and each group was assessed by an odds ratio (OR). RESULTS The D allele of the ACE (I/D) was significantly associated with the risk of T2D accompanying dyslipidemia between group A and controls [OR=1.37, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.08-1.74; p=0.010], and significant association of the D allele with dyslipidemia was also observed in diabetic patients (OR=1.88, 95% CI=1.40-2.54; p<0.001). Furthermore, the ID genotype had a decreased risk of developing T2D without dyslipidemia as compared with controls (OR=0.52, 95% CI=0.32-0.82; p=0.0060). The distributions of the AT1R (rs5186) and ACE2 (rs2285666) genotypes and alleles did not differ between T2D patients with or without dyslipidemia and the controls. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that the ACE (I/D) polymorphism is associated with T2D, regardless of the absence or presence of dyslipidemia. The polymorphisms in the AT1R (rs5186) and ACE2 (rs2285666) seem to play lesser roles in the development of T2D.

Abstract
The zebrafish is becoming increasingly popular in behavior genetics because it may allow one to conduct large scale mutation and drug screens facilitating the discovery of mechanisms of complex traits. Strain differences in adult zebrafish behavior have already been reported, which may have important implications in neurobehavioral genetics. For example, we have found the AB and SF strains to differ in their behavioral responses to both acute and chronic alcohol exposure. In the current study, we further characterize these strains using semi-quantitative RT-PCR to measure the expression of ten selected genes and HPLC to measure the levels of nine neurochemicals. We chose the target genes and neurochemicals based upon their potential involvement in alcohol and other drugs of abuse related mechanisms. We quantified the expression of the genes encoding D1-R, D2a-R, D4a-R dopamine receptors, GABA(A)-R, GABA(B)-R1, GAD1, MAO, NMDA-R (NR2D subunit), 5HT-R1bd and SLC6 a4a. We found the gene encoding D1 dopamine receptor over-expressed and the genes encoding GABA(B1) receptor and solute family carrier protein 6 (SLC6) 4a under-expressed in SF compared to AB. We also found the level of all (dopamine, DOPAC, Serotonin, GABA, Glutamate, Glycine, Aspartate, Taurine) but one (5HIAA) neurochemicals tested decreased in SF as compared to AB. These results, combined with previously identified behavioral differences between the AB and SF strains, demonstrate the importance of strain characterization in zebrafish. They now also allow formulation of working hypotheses about possible mechanisms underlying the differential effects of acute and chronic alcohol treatment on these two zebrafish strains.
