Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the impact of childhood epilepsy on parental quality of life (QOL) and psychological health, and to investigate possible correlations between parental QOL and background variables as well as parental anxiety and depression. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Parents having an epileptic child (n = 263) and parents having a healthy child (n = 270) were enrolled. Groups were in balance for background variables. Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) Questionnaire, Zung Depression Scale (ZDS) and Zung Anxiety Scale (ZAS) were applied to all parents. Patients were divided into the first visit group (newly diagnosed epilepsy) and follow-up visit group. RESULTS The parents of children with epilepsy had significantly lower QOL scores in SF-36 for all subscales and higher levels of depression and anxiety by using ZDS and ZAS. The factors correlated with parental QOL were seizure control, visit status, anxiety, depression, employment, cost of epilepsy, status epilepticus, drug side effect and age of parents. CONCLUSIONS Childhood epilepsy has a severe impact on parental QOL and psychological health, and recognition of possible correlations between parental QOL and background variables will be helpful to improve parental QOL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Occupational coke oven emissions (COEs) have been considered an important health issue. However, there are no conclusive data on human hepatic injury due to COE exposure. The association of COE exposure with liver function was explored and the effects of modification of potential non-occupational factors were assessed. METHODS 705 coke oven workers and 247 referents were investigated. Individual cumulative COE exposure was quantitatively estimated. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase, alkaline phosphatase, hepatitis B surface antigen and anti-hepatitis C antibody were measured. RESULTS Among those with high COE exposure, the adjusted ORs of abnormal ALT and AST were 5.23 (95% CI 2.66 to 10.27) and 1.95 (95% CI 1.18 to 3.52), respectively. Overweight individuals (body mass index (BMI) > or =25 kg/m(2)) with high COE exposure had elevated risks of abnormal ALT (adjusted OR 23.93, 95% CI 8.73 to 65.62) and AST (adjusted OR 5.18, 95% CI 2.32 to 11.58). Risk of liver damage in hepatitis B virus- or hepatitis C virus-positive individuals with COE exposure was also elevated. CONCLUSIONS Long-term exposure to COE increases the risk of liver dysfunction, which is more prominent among those with higher BMI and hepatitis virus infection. The risk assessment of liver damage associated with COE exposure should take BMI and hepatitis virus infection into consideration.

Abstract
The solution conformation of a fully sulfated heparin-derived tetrasaccharide, I, was studied in the presence of a 4-fold excess of Ca2+. Proton–proton and proton–carbon residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) were measured in a neutral aligning medium. The order parameters of two rigid hexosamine rings of I were determined separately using singular value decomposition and ab initio structures of disaccharide fragments of I. The order parameters were very similar implying that a common order tensor can be used to analyze the structure of I. Using one order tensor, RDCs of both hexosamine rings were used as restraints in molecular dynamics simulations. RDCs of the inner iduronic acid were calculated for every point of the molecular dynamics trajectory. The fitting of the calculated RDCs of the two forms of the iduronic acid to the experimental values yielded a population of 1C4 and 2So conformers of iduronic acid that agreed well with the analysis based on proton–proton scalar coupling constants. The glycosidic linkage torsion angles in RDC-restrained molecular dynamics (MD) structures of I are consistent with the interglycosidic three-bond proton–carbon coupling constants. These structures also show that the shape of heparin is not affected dramatically by the conformational flexibility of the iduronic acid ring. This is in line with conclusions of previous studies based on MD simulations and the analysis of 1H-1H NOEs. Our work therefore demonstrates the effectiveness of RDCs in the conformational analysis of glycosaminoglycans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rat model of reperfused partial liver infarction (RPLI) has been increasingly used in studying new diagnostics and therapeutics. PURPOSE To characterize the RPLI model using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), microangiography, and histopathology. MATERIAL AND METHODS RPLI was induced in eight rats by occluding hepatic inflow to the right liver lobe for 3 hours. MRI was performed at a 1.5 T clinical scanner 6 hours after reperfusion to obtain T2-weighted (T2WI), T1-weighted (T1WI), contrast-enhanced (CE) T1WI, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps, T1-weighted dynamic contrast-enhanced (T1-DC) perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI), and T2*-weighted dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced (T2*-DSC) PWI images. Rats were sacrificed for microangiography and histomorphology. In vivo morphological and functional MRI parameters, including maximum initial slope (MIS), K value, relative blood flow (rBF), relative blood volume (rBV), time to peak (TTP), and mean transit time (MTT), were matched with postmortem findings. RESULTS The infarcted lobe was conspicuous from normal liver with lower and higher signal intensity on T1WI (P=0.018) and T2WI (P=0.001), respectively. Contrast between infarcted and normal liver reversed on CE-T1WI after gadolinium injection. The infarction averaged 37.5% of total liver volume. DWI and ADC maps were able to detect subtle perfusion-related differences (P<0.05). With T1-DC-PWI, increased extravasation and vascular permeability were reflected by significantly greater MIS (P=0.034) and K value (P=0.014) in infarction. T2*-DSC-PWI showed lower rBF and rBV with shorter TTP and MTT in infarcted liver (P<0.05). In vivo MRI findings corresponded well with postmortem outcomes. CONCLUSION RPLI in rats could be characterized by multiparametric MRI and postmortem assessments, with insight into the no-reflow phenomenon, which implies its further application for preclinical assessments of new pharmaceutics.

Abstract
Graves' disease (GD) is a common organ-specific autoimmune disorder, which is multifactorial and develops in genetically susceptible individuals. We had earlier mapped a susceptibility locus for GD to chromosome 5q31-33 in a linkage study. Here we used tag single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to search for genetic variants associated with GD, and examined 19 functional candidate genes in this chromosomal region. We identified 192 polymorphisms by re-sequencing the candidate genes, and selected 51 tagSNPs to genotype in a case-control collection of 1118 south Han Chinese subjects (428 cases and 690 controls). Initial analysis suggested that a non-synonymous SNP rs40401 (P27S) of interleukin 3 (IL3) was associated with GD, and further fine-mapping showed that rs40401, or its perfect proxy SNP rs31480 in the 5' flanking region of IL3, fully accounted for the association signal at this locus. We replicated significant association of rs40401 with GD in an independent sample collection of 839 north Han Chinese subjects. A combined analysis revealed strong validation of this association (odds ratio (OR(common))=1.63, combined P (P(comb))=4 x 10(-6) in the Recessive disease model). This study provides convincing evidence that the IL3 gene is a susceptibility locus for GD in the Chinese population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the clinical efficiency of two strategy in the treatment of secondary common bile duct stones: laparoscopic cholecystectomy with transcytotic common bile duct exploration (LC + LTCBDE), or laparoscopic cholecystectomy after endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST + LC). METHODS According to the screening standard, 88 patients with secondary bile duct stones (43 cases in LC + LTCBDE group, 45 cases in EST + LC group) who were treated from June 2005 to November 2007 were analyzed retrospectively. The achievement ratio, complications, average hospital stay and cost between two groups were compared. And all patients were followed up. RESULTS There were no significant differences on achievement ratio and complications between two groups (P > 0.05). The LC + LTCBDE group has significantly shorter hospital stay and lower cost (P < 0.05). There were no recurrence in 1 year. CONCLUSIONS LTCBDE is a promising strategy which has more advantages in the minimal invasive treatment of secondary common bile duct stones.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the efficacy of conductive education combined with Frenkel training in the improvement of balance function in children with cerebral palsy. METHODS One hundred and fifteen children with cerebral palsy were randomly administered with conductive education and Frenkel training (study group, n=60) or conventional training (control group, n=55). Activities of daily living (ADL) scale and gross motor function measurement (GMFM) of physical performances were used to assess the balance function. RESULTS The scores of ADL scale and GMFM of physical performances in both the study and the control groups increased after training. The study group showed higher scores of ADL scale (37.91+/-10.12 vs 34.18+/-6.13; p<0.05)and GMFM (62.93+/-15.00 vs 54.53+/-14.11) than the control group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Conductive education combined with Frenkel training is more effective for the improvement of balance function in children cerebral palsy.

Abstract
Candida is the major fungal pathogen of humans causing a variety of afflictions ranging from superficial mucosal diseases to deep seated mycoses. Biofilm formation is a major virulence factor in the pathogenicity of Candida, and Candida biofilms are difficult to eradicate especially because of their very high antifungal resistance. Consequently, research into the pathogenicity of Candida has focused on the prevention and management of biofilm development, their architecture, and antifungal resistance. Although studies have shed some light, molecular mechanisms that govern biofilm formation and pathogenicity still await full clarification. This review outlines the key features of what is currently known of Candida biofilm development, regulation and antifungal resistance and, their proteomics.
