Abstract
With the aid of a volume flowmeter it is possible to record pulse synchromous volumetric changes in the outer ear canal. In 7 ears with glomus tumour in the tympanic cavity and in 5 with serous otitis media, such changes were larger than in 125 persons with a normal middle ear. By changing the ambient pressure in a pressure chamber and instructing the patients not to swallow, the drum can be pushed inward or outward. In all the cases of glomus tumour studied the pulse volumetric change was considerably affected when the drum was pushed inward or outward. In the normal patients the change was no change at all. This means that the pulse volume changes in normals are generated mainly by the vessels in the outer ear canal.

Abstract
In 100 patients with chronic otitis media, tubal function and volume was tested before operation. In a postoperative study on hearing and healing there was no positive correlation between these findings and the preoperative results. In 50 patients with healed ear drums, tubal function was retested in a pressure chamber with a flow volume technique. An improvement in Eustachian tube function could be demonstrated. These findings indicate that poor tubal function in chronic otitis media might be secondary to other factors responsible for the disease.

Abstract
Because staphylococcal protein A binds all the known subclasses of mouse IgG except IgG1, ethanol-fixed staphylococci were used as an adsorbent to prepare IgG1 fractions of anti-BALB/c alloantibody-containing globulins and normal globulins of the same strains. The loss of more than 99% of the IgG2 as a result of this adsorption was demonstrated by immunodiffusion. The IgG1 fractions of C3H and CBA anti-BALB/c globulins were tested for their effect on growth of the BALB/c plasmacytomas MOPC-315 and MOPC-460 in C3H and CBA mice by incubation with the tumor cells before transplantation and by injection periodically thereafter into the hosts. With alloantibody-containing globulins that showed slight enhancement of growth of these tumors, or none, the IgG1 preparations caused considerable enhancement of tumor growth. Control preparations of normal C3H or CBA globulins, or IgG1 fractions similarly prepared from the normal globulins, showed no enhancing effect on the growth of these tumors.

Abstract
Casts represent an important, diagnostic component of urinary sediment, and may signal renal parenchymal disease in asymptomatic individuals. Accurate, precise identification of certain casts may be difficult due to poor visualization by current technics. Casts from freshly voided urine specimens, cytocentrifuged and stained by the Papanicolaou method, can be visualized optimally from permanent slide preparations. The genesis of these casts and their diagnostic potential related to renal disease and acute renal allograft rejection are discussed.

Abstract
The reasons for exclusion of prisoners from research studies on drugs were based mostly on a relatively limited group of laboratory parameters which could have been detected using a simple battery of screening tests. The answers to a medical history form added little to the evaluation of either the prisoner or student groups, were probably very unreliable, and could be just as well confined to a few selected questions regarding drug history as a matter of record. Students gave appropriate responses to a mood scale measurement test while prisoners characteristically did not comply. Because of a combination of various institutional and sociological factors, prisoners probably represent a special subgroup of research volunteers whose health status may not be representative of the total "healthy" population. They are unlikely to give accurate or reliable responses in testing situations which rely upon reporting of the subjective effects of drugs with regard to tolerance or pharmacologic effect. Studies of investigational drugs where the likelihood of potentiaal risk is significant should be avoided in such populations unless compliance has been assessed adequately.

Abstract
Foster home care for the elderly, as an alternative to living independently, living with relatives or living in an institution, has been a neglected area of investigation, although such care is a nationwide phenomenon. This survey of all licensed Family Care Home operators in the Louisville, Kentucky area provides baseline data regarding the characteristics of providers of adult foster care and the recipients. Data were obtained from 183 persons caring for minimally impaired adults in their own homes and on 422 residents in these foster home settings. Of the residents, 69.5 percent were aged 65 or over. Care providers are described on the basis of age, race, sex, educational level, family size and composition, previous employment, reasons for entering the business, and problems encountered. Residents are described on the basis of age, race, sex, physical condition, care required, and outside contacts. Foster home care for the aged can furnish many advantages if the resident is properly placed and support services are provided. This form of care deserves much greater emphasis in future research of the provision of services for the elderly.

Abstract
The effect of preimmunization with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin cell walls (BCGcw) on tumor growth was studied with the use of transplantable Morris Hepatoma 3924a in inbred ACl rats. There was an increase in tumor incidence, an increase in the i.m. tumor growth rate, and an increase in the average i.m. tumor mass in animals that were preimmunized with BCGcw. The BCGcw-induced enhancement in tumor growth was dependent upon the amount of tumor present at the time of BCGcw immunization. No enhancement occurred in animals immunized with BCGcw 12 days after the inoculation of tumor cells.

Abstract
With attentive medical management, the elderly demented patient can live in greater comfort, dignity and independence. Errors in supervision can result in a drug intoxication, misdiagnoses, and personal neglect. Many of the elderly have a chronic dementing illness, and disability often is accelerated by complications. However, some of these complications are treatable. Case histories are presented to illustrate pitfalls in the care of such patients.

Abstract
This study was designed to test the hypothesis that maturity of moral judgment is related to moral behavior and to certain personality characteristics. The Ss, 33 fifth grade boys (approximately 10 1/2-years of age), were given the Kohlberg test of moral judgment, and scores on this test were related to a measure of general intelligence, moral conduct as judged by peers (sociometric nominations), honesty in a structured test, and certain personality variables. Maturity of moral judgment was found to be significantly correlated with general cognitive ability (intelligence test performance) and, even with intelligence partialed out, with resistance to temptation, reputation for being concerned with the welfare of others, self-confidence, and security in social relationships with peers.
