Characterization of components of heat-treated serum albumin with bromcresol green

The interactions of bromcresol green with various components isolated from heat treated bovine serum albumin at 65 degrees C and pH 9.0 were studied spectrophotometrically. The difference spectra of the dye induced by native albumin and component 1, which has the same electrophoretic mobility as native albumin, had a trough at 616 nm and peak at about 668 nm, whereas those induced by the denatured monomer (component 1'), denatured dimer (component 2) and denatured trimer (component 3) had a trough at 610 nm and peak at 655 nm. From these difference spectra, it was concluded that component 1 is a mixture of at least two components (native and modified native forms) and that components 1', 2 and 3, formed during the process of denaturation, have essentially the same conformation in the environment of the binding sites for bromcresol green. A possible mechanism for the heat denaturation of serum albumin is proposed.

Endoscopic observation of the gastric mucus in vivo stained with azure A

Gastric mucus was stained with Azure A, a cationic dye, which had the highest affinity with macromolecular constituents of the mucus, under such conditions as 0.2% Azure A-0.5% NaHCO3 solution (pH 8.1) in dye concentration, staining for ten minutes, 37 degrees C in reaction temperature and the salt concentration and ionic strength below 6.0 x 10(-2). In rat and resected human stomachs, gastric mucus was clearly stained under these conditions. In human subjects, the in vivo stained muscu was observed endoscopically. The pyloric gland region. The difference was seen in the pattern of the gastric area between the fundic and pyloric gland region. Histological examination revealed that only the mucous layer was stained with Azure A. The stained macromolecules in the mucus and factors affecting the staining were discussed.

Selective intraarterial steroid injection in ulcerative colitis

Angiography was performed in 11 patients with ulcerative colitis and prednisolone injected directly into the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries in 10 patients. Hypervascularity of the affected regions was a common finding, but early venous filling was noted in only 5 cases out of 11. Good results were obtained by intra-arterial steroid injections.

"Trench ulcer" of the stomach

The clinical, endoscopic and histological findings of 14 cases with unusual gigantic ulcers of the stomach were reported. The patients were mainly aged, complicated by cardiovascular diseases. The ulcer was designated as "trench ulcer" from the characteristic endoscopic features, which ran from the cardiac portion to the angle along the lesser curvature.
