Abstract
AIMS AND BACKGROUND Previous research has shown that irradiated splenocytes preserve the antitumor effect and induce relatively weaker graft-versus-host disease in parent C57BL/6~CB6F1 transplantation. The present study was designed to investigate the antitumor effect of 5-Gy-irradiated haploidentical donor leukocyte infusions (DLI) without prior bone marrow transplantation and the possibly involved mechanism in (H-2d/k)~(H-2b/d) infusion model systems. METHODS Hepa 1-6 tumor-bearing mice were used to evaluate the antitumor effect and the possible mechanism of irradiated haploidentical DLI treatment. Changes in tumor volume, lymphocyte proliferation and cytotoxicity, IFN-gamma and IL-2 secretion and donor cell survival in vivo were analyzed. RESULTS After irradiated haploidentical DLI treatment of the poorly immunogeneic Hepa 1-6 tumor mouse model, the donor cells were rejected and disappeared within 4 days. Surprisingly, an antitumor response was still observed. The infusion treatment effectively inhibited tumor growth and prolonged the survival of recipients, and this effect could be enhanced by combined treatment with cyclophosphamide and impaired by deleting donor-derived T cells. Moreover, the infusion treatment increased the levels of type 1 cytokines including IFN-gamma and IL-2, and enhanced the proliferation of lymphocyte subsets, particularly CD8 + T and NK cells. Specifically, multiple infusions proved to enhance the antitumor effect without inducing graft-versus-host disease. CONCLUSIONS As an adoptive therapy, irradiated haploidentical DLI without bone marrow transplantation might be a promising and safe treatment for cancer.

Abstract
In this study we report on jumps in the magnetic moment of the hemo-ilmenite solid solution (x)FeTiO(3)-(1-x)Fe(2)O(3) above Fe(III) percolation at low temperature (T<3 K). The first jumps appear at 2.5 K, one at each side of the magnetization loop, and their number increases with decreasing temperature and reaches 5 at T=0.5 K. The jumps occur after field reversal from a saturated state and are symmetrical in the trigger field and intensity with respect to the field axis. Moreover, an increase of the sample temperature by 2.8% at T=2.0 K indicates the energy released after the ignition of the magnetization jump, as the spin-currents generated by the event are dissipated in the lattice. The magnetization jumps are further investigated by Monte Carlo simulations, which show that these effects are a result of magnetic interaction-induced partitioning on a sublattice level.

Abstract
By using the EST strategy for identifying novel members belonging to homologous gene families, a novel fulklength cDNA encoding a protein significantly homologous to UDP-Gal: N-acetylglucosamine beta-1, 4-galactosyltransferase (GalT) was isolated from a human testis cDNA library. A nucleotide sequence of 2 173 bp long was determined to contain an open reading frame of 1 032 nucleotides (344 amino acids). In view of the homology to memben of the galactosyltransferase gene family and especially the closest relationship toGallus gallus GalT type I (CK I), the predicted product of the novel cDNA was designated as human beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase homolog I (HumGT-H1). Its mRNA is present in different degrees in 16 tissues examined. Southern analysis of human genomic DNA revealed its locus on chromosome 3.

Abstract
The flies of genusGlossina (Diptera: Glossinidae) are an important vector of African trypanosomiases which cause diseases in humans and animals. The ribosomal DNA Internal Transcribed Spacer-2 (ITS-2) region sequences from differentGlossina species were PCR-amplified and analyzed in order to construct a molecular phylogeny for genusGlossina. Trees generated by parsimony confirmed the monophyletic taxonomic placement of genusGlossina wherefusca group species formed the deepest branch followed bymorsitans andpalpalis groups, respectively. The placement ofGlossina austeni by both the traditional morphological and biochemical criteria has been controversial. Results presented here, based on ITS-2 locus sequence analysis, suggest thatGlossina austeni can be placed into a separate subgenerus which forms a sister-group relationship with themorsitans group species.

Abstract
Human leucocyte antigen class I (HLA-I), which includes HLA-A, -B and -C, is an essential immune factor participating in the antitumour immune response. The changes in HLA-I expression in peripheral blood T lymphocytes in cancer patients have yet to be defined. This study examined the expression of HLA-I on CD4(+) and CD8(+) T lymphocytes in female patients with stage I - IV breast infiltrating ductal carcinoma, benign breast tumour diseases (mammary intraductal papilloma or breast fibroadenoma), and in healthy controls. HLA-I was down-regulated on CD4(+) T lymphocytes from patients with stage III and IV cancer, and on CD8(+) T lymphocytes in patients with stage I - IV cancer compared with healthy controls. HLA-I expression in T lymphocytes may contribute towards immune-balance disorders in tumour patients.

Abstract
Hip fracture risk is usually evaluated using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or quantitative computed tomography (QCT) which provide surrogate measures for proximal femoral strength. However, proximal femoral strength can best be estimated explicitly by combining QCT with finite element (FE) analysis. To evaluate this technique for predicting hip fracture in older men and women, we performed a nested age- and sex-matched case-control study in the Age Gene/Environment Susceptibility (AGES) Reykjavik cohort. Baseline (pre-fracture) QCT scans of 5500 subjects were obtained. During 4-7 years follow-up, 51 men and 77 women sustained hip fractures. Ninety-seven men and 152 women were randomly selected as age- and sex-matched controls. FE-strength of the left hip of each subject for stance (F(Stance)) and posterolateral fall (F(Fall)) loading, and total femur areal bone mineral density (aBMD) were computed from the QCT data. F(Stance) and F(Fall) in incident hip fracture subjects were 13%-25% less than in control subjects (p ≤ 0.006) after controlling for demographic parameters. The difference between FE strengths of fracture and control subjects was disproportionately greater in men (stance, 22%; fall, 25%) than in women (stance, 13%; fall, 18%) (p ≤ 0.033), considering that F(Stance) and F(Fall) in fracture subjects were greater in men than in women (p < 0.001). For men, F(Stance) was associated with hip fracture after accounting for aBMD (p = 0.013). These data indicate that F(Stance) provides information about fracture risk that is beyond that provided by aBMD (p = 0.013). These findings support further exploration of possible sex differences in the predictors of hip fracture and of sex-specific strategies for using FE analysis to manage osteoporosis.

Abstract
A group of 48 men (22 aged 65-75 years, 26 aged 80-90 years) and 59 women (32 aged 65-75 years, 27 aged 80-90 years) were enrolled in the Age, Gene/Environment Susceptibility-Reykjavik study and imaged with in vivo volumetric Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT) to investigate the effects of age and sex on femoral neck structure and strength. Femoral neck cross-sectional moment of inertia for bending directions near those of standing and walking (I(AP)), bending strength (M(y)), and axial compressive strength (F(y)) were computed at the location of minimum cross-sectional area (minCSA). Local cortical thickness was computed in the inferior femoral neck based on density profiles extending through the cortex of the minCSA femoral neck section. Multivariate models accounting for height, weight, and age group (younger or older) showed that men had a 46% higher M(y) and a 23% higher F(y) than women, while women had a 13% thicker inferior cortex than men. Cortical thickness in the inferoposterior region of the femoral neck was significantly related to bending and axial strength after adjusting for overall volumetric bone mineral density. Both minCSA and I(AP) were higher in the older, gender-pooled age group, but F(y) and M(y) did not differ between the two age groups. The results suggest that age-related expansion of the femoral neck primarily occurs in the superior and inferior directions and helps maintain homeostasis of femoral neck stiffness and strength. The higher bending strength of the male femoral neck may partly explain why elderly men have a lower risk of hip fracture than elderly women.

Abstract
Campylobacter isolates (n = 297; 202 C. jejuni and 95 C. coli isolates) recovered from 2,513 retail meat samples (chicken breasts, ground turkey, ground beef, and pork chops) were examined for antimicrobial susceptibility. The isolates were further analyzed for genetic relatedness by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) using SmaI and KpnI restriction enzymes, and a subset of isolates (n = 174) were subtyped by multilocus sequence typing (MLST). The resistance most frequently observed was that to doxycycline (27.6%), followed by ciprofloxacin (13.8%) and erythromycin (6.4%). All isolates were susceptible to gentamicin and meropenem. C. coli showed higher resistance to doxycycline than did C. jejuni (42.1 versus 20.8%) and lower resistance to ciprofloxacin than did C. jejuni (10.5 versus 15.3%). Erythromycin resistance was only observed in C. coli. PFGE using SmaI plus KpnI digestion generated 168 clusters from 297 isolates: 115 from C. jejuni and 53 from C. coli. MLST revealed 44 sequence types (STs) under 10 clonal complexes from 120 C. jejuni and 27 STs under two clonal complexes from 54 C. coli. There was a positive association between PFGE and STs; however, PFGE showed greater discriminatory power than MLST. Subtyping data did not correlate with antimicrobial resistance phenotypes.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to determine the uropathogenic potential of Escherichia coli isolated from retail meats. METHODS AND RESULTS Two hundred E. coli isolates recovered from retail meats, which were previously identified molecularly as extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli, were investigated for the presence of 21 uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) virulence-associated genes. Twenty-three E. coli isolates were selected based on their serogroups and the number of virulence genes they contained, and further characterized using multilocus sequence typing, and by tissue culture assays for adherence to and invasion of T-24 human bladder cells and for their induction of interleukin (IL)-6 secretion. All virulence genes tested, except afa/dra and hlyD, were detected among the E. coli isolates. Multilocus sequence typing analysis of 23 selected isolates revealed that 17 isolates belonged to STs associated with human UPEC. Nearly all 23 isolates exhibited lower level of adherence and invasion compared to a clinical strain, UPEC CFT073. CONCLUSIONS These observations suggested that a small proportion of E. coli isolates from retail meats carry uropathogenic associated virulence genes and thus may serve as a reservoir of these genes to UPEC in the human intestine. Their virulence potential seemed limited as they were only weakly invasive in human bladder cell culture. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY These findings support the hypothesis that retail meat E. coli may play a role in relation to urinary tract infection (UTI) and may be considered in development of a UTI prevention strategy.

Abstract
Muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements have been carried out on the unconventional antiferromagnet Yb3Pt4. Oscillations are observed below T(N) = 2.22(1) K, consistent with the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Néel temperature observed in bulk experiments. In agreement with neutron diffraction experiments the oscillation frequency ω(μ)(T)/2π follows an S = 1/2 mean-field temperature dependence, yielding a quasistatic local field of 1.71(2) kOe at T = 0. A crude estimate gives an ordered moment of ∼ 0.66 μ(B) at T = 0, comparable to 0.81 μ(B) from neutron diffraction. As T-->T(N) from above the dynamic relaxation rate λ(d) exhibits no critical slowing down, consistent with a mean-field transition. In the AFM phase a T-linear fit to λ(d)(T), appropriate to a Fermi liquid, yields highly enhanced values of λ(d)/T and the Korringa constant K(μ)(2)T/λ(d), with K(μ) the estimated muon Knight shift. A strong suppression of λ(d) by applied field is observed in the AFM phase. These properties are consistent with the observed large Sommerfeld-Wilson and Kadowaki-Woods ratios in Yb3Pt4 (although the data do not discriminate between Fermi-liquid and non-Fermi-liquid states), and suggest strong enhancement of q≈0 spin correlations between large-Fermi-volume band quasiparticles in the AFM phase of Yb3Pt4.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The clinical significance of hyponatremia has not been investigated in high-grade aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) patients. Thus, we assessed the predictive value of hyponatremia for poor outcome or cerebral infarction in high grade patients (the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons Scale (WFNS) grade 4 or 5) after aSAH. METHODS Patients with WFNS grade 4 or 5 after aSAH were selected into this study between January 2005 and January 2008. In the same period, patients with WFNS grade 1, 2 or 3 after aSAH (low grade) were also chosen into this study. Hyponatremia was determined with serum sodium measurements obtained within 9 days after aSAH. Prognosis of patients was estimated with Glasgow Outcome Scale at 3 months. The relationship between hyponatremia and poor outcome and association of hyponatremia and cerebral infarction were analysed, respectively. RESULTS A total of 124 high-grade patients were included in this study. Of those, 78 patients developed hyponatremia. Hyponatremia developed in 32.3% of cases between days 1 and 3 after aSAH, and 30.6% developed hyponatremia after 3 days post-aSAH. Multivariable analysis revealed that hyponatremia was not correlated with poor outcome in high-grade aSAH patients. Furthermore, only late-onset hyponatremia was correlated with cerebral infarction in these patients. Meanwhile, there was no significant correlation between hyponatremia and poor outcome or cerebral infarction in 259 low-grade aSAH patients. CONCLUSIONS Hyponatremia does not predict poor outcome in all-grade aSAH patients. However, late-onset hyponatremia in high-grade aSAH patients is associated with cerebral infarction. Therefore, the appropriate management of hyponatremia could be beneficial in those patients.
