Abstract
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of left-descending coronary tissues harvested from three porcine specimens were acquired with a home-build swept-source OCT setup. Despite the fact that OCT is capable of acquiring high resolution circumferential images of vessels, many distinct histological features of a vessel have comparable optical properties leading to poor contrast in OCT images. Two classification methods were tested in this report for the purpose of enhancing contrast between soft-tissue components of porcine coronary vessels. One method involved analyzing the attenuation of the OCT signal as a function of light penetration into the tissue. We demonstrated that by analyzing the signal attenuation in this manner we were able to differentiate two media sub-layers with different orientations of the smooth muscle cells. The other classification method used in our study was fractal analysis. Fractal analysis was implemented in a box-counting (fractal dimension) image-processing code and was used as a tool to differentiate and quantify variations in tissue texture at various locations in the OCT images. The calculated average fractal dimensions had different values in distinct regions of interest (ROI) within the imaged coronary samples. When compared to the results obtained by using the attenuation of the OCT signal, the method of fractal analysis demonstrated better classification potential for distinguishing amongst the tissue ROI.

Abstract
Nucleosides diffusing through a 2 nm electron-tunneling junction generate current spikes of sub-millisecond duration with a broad distribution of peak currents. This distribution narrows 10-fold when one of the electrodes is functionalized with a reagent that traps nucleosides in a specific orientation with hydrogen bonds. Functionalizing the second electrode reduces contact resistance to the nucleosides, allowing them to be identified via their peak currents according to deoxyadenosine > deoxycytidine > deoxyguanosine > thymidine, in agreement with the order predicted by a density functional calculation.

Abstract
Nephrogenic fibrosing dermatopathy (NFD) is a systemic disorder of unknown etiology. Recent reports have associated the development of NFD with the use of gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Here, we present the case of an adolescent with end-stage renal disease who died of biopsy-proven NFD and also developed cardiac calcification and clinical manifestations of pulmonary fibrosis with pulmonary hypertension. Only five cases of NFD have been reported in children, all of which were prior to the information regarding the consequences of using gadolinium. Here, we report a patient with NFD who received gadolinium while on chronic hemodialysis, 16 months prior to the onset of symptoms. Because he succumbed to this disease, we stress on the importance of eliminating the use of gadolinium-enhanced MRI examinations in children with impaired kidney function until the etiology of NFD is clarified

Abstract
In the last few years, a new type of glucose-sensitive hydrogel (GSH) has been developed that shrinks with increasing glucose concentration due to the formation of reversible crosslinks The first osmotic swelling pressure results measured for any member of this new class of GSH are reported, so that their suitability for use in sensors combining pressure transducers and smart gels can be evaluated. Comparison is also made with results obtained for an older type of GSH that expands with increasing glucose concentration due to an increase in the concentration of counterions within the gel. The newer type of GSH exhibits both faster kinetics and weaker fructose interference, and therefore is more suitable for in vivo glucose sensing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We developed a semi-automated method based on a graph-cuts algorithm for segmentation and volumetric measurements of the cartilage from high-resolution knee magnetic resonance (MR) images from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) database and assessed the intra- and inter-observer reproducibility of measurements obtained via this method. DESIGN MR image sets from 20 subjects of varying Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grades (from 0 to IV) on fixed flexion knee radiographs were selected from the baseline double-echo and steady-state (DESS) knee MR images in the OAI database (0.B.1 Imaging Data set). Two trained radiologists independently performed the segmentation of knee cartilage twice using the semi-automated method. The volumes of segmented cartilage were computed and compared. The intra- and inter-observer reproducibility were determined by means of the coefficient of variation (CV%) of repeated cartilage segmented volume measurements. The subjects were also divided into the low- (0, I or II) and high-KL (III or IV) groups. The differences in cartilage volume measurements and CV% within and between the observers were tested with t tests. RESULTS The mean (+/-SD) intra-observer CV% for the 20 cases was 1.29 (+/-1.05)% for observer 1 and 1.67 (+/-1.14)% for observer 2, while the mean (+/-SD) inter-observer CV% was 1.31 (+/-1.26)% for session 1 and 1.79 (+/-1.72)% for session 2. There was no significant difference between the two intra-observer CV%'s (P=0.272) and between the two inter-observer CV%'s (P=0.353). The mean intra-observer CV% of the low-KL group was significantly smaller than that for the high-KL group for observer 1 (0.83 vs 1.86%: P=0.025). The segmentation processing times used by the two observers were significantly different (observer 1 vs 2): (mean 49+/-12 vs 33+/-6min) for session 1 and (49+/-8 vs 32+/-8min) for session 2. CONCLUSION The semi-automated graph-cuts method allowed us to segment and measure cartilage from high-resolution 3T MR images of the knee with high intra- and inter-observer reproducibility in subjects with varying severity of OA.

Abstract
The process of RNA interference (RNAi) has been exploited in cultured chicken cells and in chick embryos to assess the effect of specific gene inhibition on phenotypes related to development and disease. We previously demonstrated that avian leukosis virus-based retroviral vectors are capable of delivering effective RNAi against Marek's disease virus (MDV) in cell culture. In this study, similar RNAi vectors are shown to reduce the replication of MDV in live chickens. Retroviral vectors were introduced into d 0 chick embryos, followed by incubation until hatching. Chicks were challenged with 500 pfu of strain 648A MDV at day of hatch, followed by assays for viremia at 14 d postinfection. Birds were monitored for signs of Marek's disease for 8 wk. A stem-loop PCR assay was developed to measure siRNA expression levels in birds. Delivery of RNAi co-targeting the MDV gB glycoprotein gene and ICP4 transcriptional regulatory gene significantly reduced MDV viremia in vivo, although to lesser extents than were observed in cell culture. Concomitant reductions in disease incidence also were observed, and the extent of this effect depended on the potency of the MDV challenge virus inoculum. Successful modification of phenotypic traits in live birds with retroviral RNAi vectors opens up the possibility that such approaches could be used to alter the expression of candidate genes hypothesized to influence a variety of quantitative traits including disease susceptibility.

Abstract
AIM To characterise new clinical features in a family with enhanced S-cone syndrome (ESCS) and investigate the pathogenesis of these clinical features in the homozygous Nr2e3(rd7) (rd7) mutant mice. METHODS Four patients from an affected family were included for genotypic and phenotypic study. Eye tissues from rd7 mice were used to detect a possible relationship between macrophages and autofluorescent material by immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining. RESULTS Homozygous mutation in R311Q in NR2E3 was detected in this family. Colour photographs revealed that white dots do not correlate to hyperautofluorescent spots seen in autofluorescence imaging of the macula. OCT showed rosette-like lesions similar to those found in rd7 mice histology sections. From IHC analysis, we observed that F4/80 (a pan macrophage marker) and autofluorescence were colocalised to the same cells within the retina rosettes. CONCLUSIONS The retinal structure of a young ESCS patient with homozygous R311Q mutation in the NR2E3 gene is similar to that seen in the rd7 mice. The macrophages were found to contain autofluorescent materials in the retinal rosettes of rd7 mice. These data are consistent with macrophage infiltration contributing to the hyperautofluorescent spots found in our patients.

Abstract
Neutron scattering is used to probe magnetic excitations in FeSe_{0.4}Te_{0.6} (T_{c} = 14 K). Low energy spin fluctuations are found with a characteristic wave vector (1/21/2L) that corresponds to Fermi surface nesting and differs from Q_{m} = (delta01/2) for magnetic ordering in Fe_{1+y}Te. A spin resonance with variant Planck's over 2piOmega_{0} = 6.51(4) meV approximately 5.3k_{B}T_{c} and variant Planck's over 2piGamma = 1.25(5) meV develops in the superconducting state from a normal state continuum. We show that the resonance is consistent with a bound state associated with s_{+/-} superconductivity and imperfect quasi-2D Fermi surface nesting.

Abstract
The new alpha-Fe(Te,Se) superconductors share the common iron building block and ferminology with the LaFeAsO and BaFe(2)As(2) families of superconductors. In contrast with the predicted commensurate spin-density-wave order at the nesting wave vector (pi, 0), a completely different magnetic order with a composition tunable propagation vector (deltapi, deltapi) was determined for the parent compound Fe_{1+y}Te in this powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction study. The new antiferromagnetic order survives as a short-range one even in the highest T_{C} sample. An alternative to the prevailing nesting Fermi surface mechanism is required to understand the latest family of ferrous superconductors.
