Coherent heavy quasiparticles in a CePt5 surface alloy

We report on the results of a high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission study on the ordered surface alloy CePt(5). The temperature dependence of the spectra show the formation of the coherent low-energy heavy-fermion band near the Fermi level. These experimental data are supported by a multiband model calculation in the framework of the dynamical mean-field theory.

Gefitinib versus docetaxel in previously treated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

PURPOSE

A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was performed to compare the efficacy, quality of life (QOL), symptom improvement and toxicities of gefitinib with docetaxel in previously treated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer.

METHODS

The PubMed database, the Cochrane Library and references of published trials were searched. Two reviewers independently assessed the quality of the trials and extracted data. The hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), relative risks (RRs) for overall response rate, QOL and symptom improvement, and odds ratios (ORs) for main toxicities were pooled using STATA package.

RESULTS

Four multicenter, randomized controlled trials involving 2257 patients with previously treated advanced NSCLC were ultimately analyzed. The pooled HRs showed no significant difference in OS and PFS between the two groups (HR = 1.02, 95% CI = 0.92-1.12, p = 0.70; HR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.88-1.07, p = 0.57, respectively). Gefitinib significantly improved overall response rate (RR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.02-2.45, p = 0.04) and QOL (RR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.27-1.88, p = 0.00 by Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Lung and RR = 1.86, 95% CI = 1.43-2.42, p = 0.00 by Trial Outcome Index, respectively). Gefitinib had fewer grade 3 or 4 neutropenia and fatigue (OR = 0.02, 95% CI = 0.01-0.03, p = 0.00; and OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.32-0.70, p = 0.00, respectively), but more grade 3 or 4 rash (OR = 2.87, 95% CI = 1.24-6.63, p = 0.01) than docetaxel. The grade 3 or 4 nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and symptom improvement were comparable between the two drugs.

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, although similar OS and PFS, gefitinib showed an advantage over docetaxel in terms of objective response rate, QOL and tolerability. Therefore, gefitinib is an important and valid treatment option for previously treated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer patients.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography for the detection and characterization of prostate cancer: correlation with microvessel density and Gleason score

AIM

To determine whether there is a correlation between the peak intensity of the lesion at contrast-enhanced ultrasonography and the microvessel density (MVD) and Gleason score in biopsy specimens of prostate cancer.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography using cadence-contrast pulse sequence (CPS) technology was performed in 147 patients with suspected prostate cancer before biopsy. An auto-tracking contrast quantification (ACQ) software was used to analyse the peak intensity (PI) of the lesion. The Gleason score and MVD immunoreactivity were determined in the prostate biopsy specimens. Ultrasound findings were correlated with biopsy findings.

RESULTS

Prostate cancer was detected in 73 of 147 patients. The PI values of prostate cancer patients were significantly higher than those of non-malignant patients [9.81 (4.23) versus 5.69 (3.19) dB; p<0.01]. The mean (SD) PIs of prostate cancer lesions with a Gleason score of 6-9 were 7.08 (3.80), 8.65 (4.08), 9.76 (3.75), and 9.85 (4.13) dB, respectively. The PI value increased significantly with a higher Gleason score (p<0.01). The mean (SD) MVDs observed in prostate cancer lesions with a Gleason score of 6-9 were 52.50 (10.54), 56.85 (10.31), 59.91 (9.29), and 66.04 (11.82), respectively. There was a positive correlation between PI and MVD in prostate cancer, with a correlation coefficient of 0.617. No correlation was found between PI value and age, prostate specific antigen (PSA) or prostate specific antigen density (PSAD) level (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

The PI obtained by CPS harmonic ultrasonography appears to be of value as an indicator of MVD and increases with a higher Gleason score. CPS harmonic ultrasonography could be promising as a useful imaging technique in the detection and characterization of prostate cancer.

Inclusion of the female condom in a male condom-only intervention in the sex industry in China: a cross-sectional analysis of pre- and post-intervention surveys in three study sites

OBJECTIVES

To describe female condom (FC) use, male condom (MC) use and overall levels of protected sex before, during and after FC education and promotion (using the original prototype FC) combined with MC promotion among female sex workers in three rural or small urban settings in southern China.

STUDY DESIGN

The 1-year FC intervention was conducted by local health workers through outreach to establishments where sex work is conducted. Three serial cross-sectional surveys were conducted in each study town before, during and after the intervention along with process documentation throughout the intervention period.

METHODS

Cross-sectional data from pre-intervention (baseline) and 6-month and 12-month post-intervention surveys from three study sites are used in a descriptive comparison of the context of the sex industry, outreach in two phases of intervention, and FC adoption after the intensive intervention phase in each site.

RESULTS

Approximately 75-80% of eligible women working in sex establishments, varying from 74 to 155 participants for each survey, were recruited from three study sites. After introduction and promotion of the FC along with the MC during the community public health intervention, between one-fifth and one-half of the study participants had tried the FC in the three study sites by the time of the 6-month and 12-month cross-sectional surveys. Among them, 10-30% had used the FC more than once. FC awareness increased following the intervention with much less variation across the three study sites. At baseline, 31-54% of participants across the three sites reported 100% protected sex in the last 30 days with all types of partners. At one of the sites with relatively low MC use before the intervention, the proportion of women reporting 100% protected sex in the last 30 days increased by 15%, and the proportion reporting nil protected sex in the last 30 days decreased by 13% between baseline and 12-month post-intervention surveys. More complex profiles of FC and MC use and protected sex were shown at the other two study sites, where a higher level of protection had been reached before the project started.

CONCLUSIONS

Different levels of FC adoption were identified after the 1-year FC promotion intervention through outreach to sex establishments. The input, output and outcomes of the intervention may be associated with women's demographic and risk characteristics, the local capacities of intervention staff, and other contextual factors. Further analysis of these factors will help establish the role of the FC in increasing protected sex, and provide insight into how to achieve greater FC use.

Nodeless superconducting gap in A(x)Fe2Se2 (A=K,Cs) revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Pairing symmetry is a fundamental property that characterizes a superconductor. For the iron-based high-temperature superconductors, an s(±)-wave pairing symmetry has received increasing experimental and theoretical support. More specifically, the superconducting order parameter is an isotropic s-wave type around a particular Fermi surface, but it has opposite signs between the hole Fermi surfaces at the zone centre and the electron Fermi surfaces at the zone corners. Here we report the low-energy electronic structure of the newly discovered superconductors, A(x)Fe(2)Se(2) (A=K,Cs) with a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of about 30 K. We found A(x)Fe(2)Se(2) (A=K,Cs) is the most heavily electron-doped among all iron-based superconductors. Large electron Fermi surfaces are observed around the zone corners, with an almost isotropic superconducting gap of ~10.3 meV, whereas there is no hole Fermi surface near the zone centre, which demonstrates that interband scattering or Fermi surface nesting is not a necessary ingredient for the unconventional superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. Thus, the sign change in the s(±) pairing symmetry driven by the interband scattering as suggested in many weak coupling theories becomes conceptually irrelevant in describing the superconducting state here. A more conventional s-wave pairing is probably a better description.

B cell epitope mapping and characterization of naturally acquired antibodies to the Plasmodium vivax merozoite surface protein-3α (PvMSP-3α) in malaria exposed individuals from Brazilian Amazon

The Plasmodium vivax Merozoite Surface Protein-3α (PvMSP-3α) is considered as a potential vaccine candidate. However, the detailed investigations of the type of immune responses induced in naturally exposed populations are necessary. Therefore, we aim to characterize the naturally induced antibody to PvMSP-3α in 282 individuals with different levels of exposure to malaria infections residents in Brazilian Amazon. PvMSP3 specific antibodies (IgA, IgG and IgG subclass) to five recombinant proteins and the epitope mapping by Spot-synthesis technique to full-protein sequence of amino acids (15aa sequence with overlapping sequence of 9aa) were performed. Our results indicates that PvMSP3 is highly immunogenic in naturally exposed populations, where 78% of studied individuals present IgG immune response against the full-length recombinant protein (PVMSP3-FL) and IgG subclass profile was similar to all five recombinant proteins studied with a high predominance of IgG1 and IgG3. We also observe that IgG and subclass levels against PvMSP3 are associated with malaria exposure. The PvMSP3 epitope mapping by Spot-synthesis shows a natural recognition of at least 15 antigenic determinants, located mainly in the two blocks of repeats, confirming the high immunogenicity of this region. In conclusion, PvMSP-3α is immunogenic in naturally exposed individuals to malaria infections and that antibodies to PvMSP3 are induced to several B cell epitopes. The presence of PvMSP3 cytophilic antibodies (IgG1 and IgG3), suggests that this mechanism could also occur in P. vivax.

134 EFFECTS OF VITAMIN E AND VITAMIN C ON THE DEVELOPMENTAL COMPETENCE OF BUFFALO (BUBALUS BUBALIS) EMBRYOS DERIVED FROM PARTHENOGENETIC ACTIVATION, IN VITRO FERTILIZATION, AND NUCLEAR TRANSFER

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of vitamin E (VE) and vitamin C (VC) on the in vitro development of embryos derived from parthenogenetic activation (PA), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and somatic cell nuclear transfer (NT) in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). Buffalo oocytes obtained from ovaries at slaughter were matured in vitro for 22 to 24 h. After maturation, oocytes were separated to 3 groups: one group of oocytes was fertilized in vitro with buffalo sperm; one group of oocytes was parthenogenetically activated by exposing them to 5 μM ionomycin for 5 min and then cultured in 2 mM 6-DMAP for 3 h; the other group of oocytes was enucleated, and fibroblasts in DMEM + 10% FBS for 4 to 5 days were transferred into enucleated oocytes by electronic fusion (100 v mm–1, 15 μs, and 3 pulses). After fusion, the activation of reconstructed embryos was induced by exposure to 5 μM ionomycin for 5 min and then cultured in 2 mM 6-DMAP for 3 h. The embryos of PA, IVF, and NT were respectively cultured in the culture medium (CM) containing different concentrations of VE, VC, or VE + VC for 7 to 9 days to evaluate embryonic development. As a result, when the embryos were cultured in the CM with different concentrations of VE (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 μM), the blastocyst development rate of the embryos derived from PA, IVF, and NT gradually rose with increasing concentrations of VE and reached the highest amount [PA: 32.9% (81/246); IVF: 21.4% (45/210); and NT: 21.1% (47/223)] in the group containing 150 μM of VE; it was significantly higher than that of other groups (P < 0.05). When the different concentrations of VC (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 μM) were added to the CM, the blastocyst development rate of the embryos derived from PA, IVF, and NT also enhanced according to the increasing concentration of VC, and more embryos developed to blastocysts in the group containing 150 μM of VC [PA: 31.2% (72/231); IVF: 20.2% (43/213); NT: 19.8% (48/243)] than in the other groups (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group (0 μM), the blastocyst rate of PA and IVF, as well as NT embryos, cultured in the CM with 150 μM VE + 150 μM VC groups was significantly higher (P < 0.05), but there were no significant differences in the percentage of blastocysts among groups of the 150 μM VE, 150 μM VC, and 150 μM VE + 150 μM VC (P > 0.05). These results indicated that adding VE (150 μM), VC (150 μM), or VE (150 μM) + VC (150 μM) in the CM could efficiently enhance the developmental competence of buffalo embryos during in vitro culture. Multigap superconductivity and strong electron-boson coupling in Fe-based superconductors: a point-contact Andreev-reflection study of Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 single crystals

Directional point-contact Andreev-reflection measurements in Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 single crystals (T(c) = 24.5 K) indicate the presence of two superconducting gaps with no line nodes on the Fermi surface. The point-contact Andreev-reflection spectra also feature additional structures related to the electron-boson interaction, from which the characteristic boson energy Ω(b)(T) is obtained, very similar to the spin-resonance energy observed in neutron scattering experiments. Both the gaps and the additional structures can be reproduced within a three-band s ± Eliashberg model by using an electron-boson spectral function peaked at Ω(0) = 12 meV ≃ Ω(b)(0).

Metoclopramide as pharmacological tool to assess vasopressinergic co-activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis: a study in healthy volunteers

The synthetic vasopressin (AVP) analogue desmopressin (dDAVP) has been used as pharmacological function test to quantify vasopressinergic co-activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in the past. Such exogenous vasopressinergic stimulation may induce confounding cardiovascular, pro-coagulatory and anti-diuretic effects and low endogenous corticotrophin-releasing-hormone (CRH) levels may limit its potential to reliably assess co-activation. Alternatively, the dopamine-2-(D2)-antagonist metoclopramide is believed to induce co-activation indirectly by releasing endogenous AVP. We investigated this indirect co-activation with metoclopramide under conditions of low and enhanced endogenous CRH release in healthy volunteers. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, four-way crossover study was performed in 12 healthy males. CRH release was induced by administering an oral 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) 200 mg function test. Co-activation was investigated by administering metoclopramide 10mg intravenously around the expected maximal effect of 5-HTP. The neuroendocrine effects were compared to those of metoclopramide alone, the 5-HTP test alone and matching placebo. Metoclopramide safely induced HPA-axis activation by itself, and potently synergized 5-HTP-induced corticotrophinergic activation of the HPA axis. These findings are indicative of vasopressinergic co-activation and suggest a role for metoclopramide as a practical function test for co-activation of the HPA axis. However, its application will be hampered pending clarification of the exact pharmacological mechanism by which metoclopramide induces co-activation of the HPA axis.

Interplay among Coulomb interaction, spin-orbit interaction, and multiple electron-boson interactions in Sr2RuO4

Using polarization- and hν-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we uncovered the fine details of a quasiparticle's dynamics of a typical multiband superconductor, Sr2RuO4. We found strong hybridization between the in-plane and out-of-plane quasiparticles via the Coulomb and spin-orbit interactions. This effect enhances the quasiparticle mass due to the inflow of out-of-plane quasiparticles into the two-dimensional Fermi surface sheet, where the quasiparticles are further subjected to the multiple electron-boson interactions. We suggest that the spin-triplet p-wave superconductivity of Sr2RuO4 is phonon mediated.

A study of patients with brain metastases as the initial manifestation of their systemic cancer in a Chinese population

To investigate the clinical characteristics of patients with brain metastases as the initial manifestation of their systemic cancer in a Chinese population, a retrospective study of 254 such patients admitted to Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China between January 1, 2003 and December 30, 2008 was performed. Data were collected to determine the features of this group (i.e., manifesting signs and symptoms, imaging studies, extracerebral metastases, primary tumor sites, initial diagnosis, and survival data). Common symptoms included headache and motor impairment. The distribution of brain metastases paralleled blood flow, and the majority of brain metastases were located in the cerebral hemispheres. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was more sensitive than computed tomography (CT) for confirming presence of brain lesions. This distinct clinical entity exhibited high rates of misdiagnosis at initial presentation. Pathology varied, and adenocarcinomas were most commonly observed. Underlying primary tumors were identified in 84.2% of patients, most often located in lung (71.7%), followed by digestive tract. Chest CT had high yield. Sixty-two patients presented with silent extracerebral metastases at initial presentation. Median survival time was 15 months (95% confidence interval, 12.2-17.8 months). Survival rates for 1, 2, and 5 years were 59.2%, 23.2%, and 15.1%, respectively. Contrast-enhanced MRI had high yield for detection of brain metastases. Adenocarcinoma was the most common histologic type. Given the high frequency of primary lung tumors and the sensitivity of chest CT, chest CT should be a part of the initial screen of primary site with brain metastases as the initial manifestation. Metastatic dissemination of malignancy to the brain as the initial manifestation is generally associated with dismal prognosis, with the exception of a minority who experience long survival.

Observation of postsoliton expansion following laser propagation through an underdense plasma

The expansion of electromagnetic postsolitons emerging from the interaction of a 30 ps, 3×10¹⁸ W cm⁻² laser pulse with an underdense deuterium plasma has been observed up to 100 ps after the pulse propagation, when large numbers of postsolitons were seen to remain in the plasma. The temporal evolution of the postsolitons has been accurately characterized with a high spatial and temporal resolution. The observed expansion is compared to analytical models and three-dimensional particle-in-cell results, revealing a polarization dependence of the postsoliton dynamics.

Phase-incoherent superconducting pairs in the normal state of Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))₂As₂

The normal state properties of the recently discovered ferropnictide superconductors might hold the key to understanding their exotic superconductivity. Using point-contact spectroscopy we show that Andreev reflection between an epitaxial thin film of Ba(Fe(0.92)Co(0.08))₂As₂ and a silver tip can be seen in the normal state of the film up to temperature T∼1.3T(c), where T(c) is the critical temperature of the superconductor. Andreev reflection far above T(c) can be understood only when superconducting pairs arising from strong fluctuation of the phase of the complex superconducting order parameter exist in the normal state. Our results provide spectroscopic evidence of phase-incoherent superconducting pairs in the normal state of the ferropnictide superconductors.

Medical image analysis with artificial neural networks

Given that neural networks have been widely reported in the research community of medical imaging, we provide a focused literature survey on recent neural network developments in computer-aided diagnosis, medical image segmentation and edge detection towards visual content analysis, and medical image registration for its pre-processing and post-processing, with the aims of increasing awareness of how neural networks can be applied to these areas and to provide a foundation for further research and practical development. Representative techniques and algorithms are explained in detail to provide inspiring examples illustrating: (i) how a known neural network with fixed structure and training procedure could be applied to resolve a medical imaging problem; (ii) how medical images could be analysed, processed, and characterised by neural networks; and (iii) how neural networks could be expanded further to resolve problems relevant to medical imaging. In the concluding section, a highlight of comparisons among many neural network applications is included to provide a global view on computational intelligence with neural networks in medical imaging.

Hexagonally deformed Fermi surface of the 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3

A hexagonal deformation of the Fermi surface of Bi2Se3 has been for the first time observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This is in contrast to the general belief that Bi2Se3 possesses an ideal Dirac cone. The hexagonal shape is found to disappear near the Dirac node, which would protect the surface state electrons from backscattering. It is also demonstrated that the Fermi energy of naturally electron-doped Bi2Se3 can be tuned by 1% Mg doping in order to realize the quantum topological transport.

Structural and phase changes in amorphous solid water films revealed by positron beam spectroscopy

The evolution and annealing of pores in, and the crystallization of, vapor-deposited films of amorphous solid water have been studied by using variable-energy positron annihilation spectroscopy for temperatures in the range 50-150 K. Both positron and positronium annihilation provide insight to the nature of the grown-in pores and their evolution with temperature. Crystallization of the films was observed at just below 140 K, in agreement with earlier studies, with the topmost 80 nm undergoing a transition consistent with crystallization at 90-100 K.

Regulatory T cells are critical to tolerance induction in presensitized mouse transplant recipients through targeting memory T cells

Memory T cells are a significant barrier to induction of transplant tolerance. However, reliable means to target alloreactive memory T cells have remained elusive. In this study, presensitization of BALB/c mice with C57BL/6 skin grafts generated a large number of OX40(+)CD44(hi)effector/memory T cells and resulted in rapid rejection of donor heart allografts. Recognizing that anti-OX40L monoclonal antibody (mAb) (alpha-OX40L) monotherapy prolonged graft survival through inhibition and apoptosis of memory T cells in presensitized recipients, alpha-OX40L was added to the combined treatment protocol of LF15-0195 (LF) and anti-CD45RB (alpha-CD45RB) mAb-a protocol that induced heart allograft tolerance in non-presensitized recipients but failed to induce tolerance in presensitized recipients. Interestingly, this triple therapy restored donor-specific heart allograft tolerance in our presensitized model that was associated with induction of tolerogenic dendritic cells and CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) T regulatory cells (Tregs). Of note, CD25(+) T cell depletion in triple therapy recipients prevented establishment of allograft tolerance. In addition, adoptive transfer of donor-primed effector/memory T cells into tolerant recipients markedly reduced levels of Tregs and broke tolerance. Our findings indicated that targeting memory T cells, by blocking OX40 costimulation in presensitized recipients was very important to expansion of Tregs, which proved critical to development of tolerance.
