Abstract
This study investigated visual and quantitative assessment of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for grading tumours localized in the fourth ventricle region. Patients were diagnosed histopathologically and classified into two groups: those with high-grade (World Health Organization [WHO] grades III and IV) and those with low-grade tumours (benign, WHO grades I and II). DWI signal intensity was described using a five-point scale. Minimum apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were obtained from areas with the lowest signal. The mean signal intensity was significantly higher in high-grade than in low-grade tumours. The mean minimum ADC value was significantly lower in high-grade than low-grade tumours. Marked hyperintensity had sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of 89.7%, 100%, 100% and 94.2%, respectively, when used as a diagnostic tool for high-grade tumours compared with 96.6%, 97.9%, 96.6% and 97.9%, respectively, when using a minimum ADC of 0.9 × 10−3 mm2/s as a diagnostic marker. It was concluded that DWI is helpful in predicting the grades of tumours in the fourth ventricle region.

Abstract
We isolated and characterized 14 polymorphic microsatellite loci in the Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) using a (GT)(13)-enriched genomic library. The numbers of alleles per locus ranged from 6 to 31, with a mean of 17.8. The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.180 to 0.949 and from 0.172 to 0.966, with means of 0.731 and 0.825, respectively. All 14 loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and no significant linkage disequilibrium between loci pairs was detected. These microsatellite markers will be useful for analyzing the population genetic structure and gene flow of E. japonicus.

Abstract
Multiple primary neoplasms with synchronous or metachronous presentation are rare, although the incidence has recently increased because of several factors. We present the case of a 53-year-old patient with chronic hepatitis B who presented with abdominal mass, mild abdominal pain, and inguinal hernia. Computed tomography imaging demonstrated diffuse thickening of the gastric antral wall, together with a huge heterogeneous abdominal mass with predominant fat attenuation with septa that showed mild enhancement on contrast-enhanced scans. Distal gastrectomy and wide resection of the retroperitoneal mass was performed. Pathology exam led to a diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell gastric lymphoma with retroperitoneal liposarcoma. This is a rare case of a primary gastric lymphoma with another primary (sarcomatous) malignancy occurring synchronously in same patient.

Abstract
Intensive theoretical and experimental efforts over the past decade have aimed at explaining the discrepancy between data for the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio, G(E)/G(M), obtained separately from cross section and polarization transfer measurements. One possible explanation for this difference is a two-photon-exchange contribution. In an effort to search for effects beyond the one-photon-exchange or Born approximation, we report measurements of polarization transfer observables in the elastic H(e[over →],e(')p[over →]) reaction for three different beam energies at a Q(2)=2.5 GeV(2), spanning a wide range of the kinematic parameter ε. The ratio R, which equals μ(p)G(E)/G(M) in the Born approximation, is found to be independent of ε at the 1.5% level. The ε dependence of the longitudinal polarization transfer component P(ℓ) shows an enhancement of (2.3±0.6)% relative to the Born approximation at large ε.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends routine colorectal cancer screening starting at age 50; however, evidence is insufficient to recommend one screening method over the other methods. Common colorectal cancer screening methods include fecal occult blood tests (FOBT), sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy.
Objective: We examined the association between advanced adenomas, known precursors to colorectal cancer, and history of screening by FOBT, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy.
Methods: We conducted a case-control study of advanced colorectal adenomatous polyps, which included 306 advanced adenoma cases and 2,287 controls without advanced adenomas, aged 24 to 79, who received an index colonoscopy from 1998 to 2007. All participants completed a questionnaire covering screening history and other colorectal cancer risk factors. Participants with polyps underwent a standard pathology review; adenomas ≥10 mm or at with at least 20% villous components were considered advanced adenomas. We used separate logistic regression models to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs for the associations between advanced adenomas and previous FOBT, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy at least 2 years before the index colonoscopy.
Results: Each screening method was associated with decreased odds of advanced adenomas; however, only associations for sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy were statistically significant. The OR for advanced adenomas, comparing participants with at least one previous FOBT to those who had never had FOBT, was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.63–1.06); for sigmoidoscopy, OR = 0.59 (95% CI: 0.46–0.77); and for colonoscopy, OR = 0.53 (95% CI: 0.39–0.72). These associations were similar with respect to left- and right-sided advanced adenomas.
Discussion: Our findings suggest colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy have similar inverse associations with advanced adenomas in both left and right sides of the colon. This is in contrast to studies of colorectal cancer that suggest endoscopy is associated with a decreased risk for tumors of the left but not right side. The discrepancy between our findings and these studies may be explained if right-sided colorectal cancers are more likely to have nonadenoma precursors that are overlooked by screening.

Abstract
Streptococcus sanguinis is an oral commensal bacterium and endogenous pathogen in the blood, which is generally naturally competent to take up extracellular DNA. Regarded as a stress response, competence development enables S. sanguinis to acquire new genetic material. The sequenced reference strain SK36 encodes and expresses the genes required for competence (com) and uptake of DNA. Isolated from blood cultures of a confirmed case of infective endocarditis, strain 133-79 encodes all necessary com genes but is not transformable under conditions permissive for competence development in SK36. Using synthetic competence-stimulating peptides (sCSP) based on sequences of SK36 and 133-79 comC, both strains developed competence at similar frequencies in cross-transformation experiments. Furthermore, downstream response pathways are similar in strains SK36 and 133-79 because platelet aggregation and biofilm formation appeared unaffected by CSP. Collectively, the data indicate that strains SK36 and 133-79 respond to CSP similarly, strongly suggesting that endogenous production or release of CSP from 133-79 is impaired.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Zoledronate has been reported to inhibit the proliferation, adhesion and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells. In the present study, we assessed whether systemic and local delivery of zoledronate would be sufficient to prevent intimal hyperplasia. METHODS Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned into four groups: non-treated group, systemic zoledronate-treated group, local collagen-treated group and local zoledronate-treated group. All four groups underwent balloon injury to the right common carotid artery. The left uninjured carotid arteries of the non-treated group were considered as normal artery samples. Twenty-one days after arterial injury and treatment, the right and left common carotid arteries were fixed, sectioned, stained and measured by computer-aided image analysis. RESULTS At 3 weeks, there was a 59% reduction of the intima/media area ratio in the systemic zoledronate-treated group compared with the non-treated group (P < 0.01). There was an 87% reduction of the intima/media area ratio in the local zoledronate-treated group compared with the local collagen-treated group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Both systemic and local delivery of zoledronate correspond to a significant reduction in intimal hyperplasia seen at 3 weeks.

Abstract
Mammalian cells respond to ionization radiation by sending out extracellular signals to affect non-irradiated neighboring cells, which is referred to as radiation induced bystander effect. In the present paper, we described a phenomenon entitled the "rescue effects", where the bystander cells rescued the irradiated cells through intercellular signal feedback. The effect was observed in both human primary fibroblast (NHLF) and cancer cells (HeLa) using two-cell co-culture systems. After co-culturing irradiated cells with unirradiated bystander cells for 24h, the numbers of 53BP1 foci, corresponding to the number of DNA double-strand breaks in the irradiated cells were less than those in the irradiated cells that were not co-cultured with the bystander cells (0.78±0.04foci/cell vs. 0.90±0.04foci/cell) at a statistically significant level. Similarly, both micronucleus formation and extent of apoptosis in the irradiated cells were different at statistically significant levels if they were co-cultured with the bystander cells. Furthermore, it was found that unirradiated normal cells would also reduce the micronucleus formation in irradiated cancer cells. These results suggested that the rescue effects could participate in repairing the radiation-induced DNA damages through a media-mediated signaling feedback, thereby mitigating the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of ionizing radiation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A genome-wide association study and a replication using Japanese, Spanish and Greek Caucasian populations have recently indicated two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs7775228 and rs10947262) associated with knee Osteoarthritis (OA) susceptibility. We have further evaluated the association in knee OA subjects from Han Chinese and Australian Caucasian origin. METHODS Two independent case-control association studies were performed using Han Chinese and Australian Caucasian populations. The two SNPs were genotyped in patients who had primary symptomatic knee OA with radiographic confirmation and/or received total knee replacement surgery as well as in matched controls. They were subjected to statistic analyses. RESULTS A total of 991 OA patients and 1536 controls were genotyped. No significant difference was detected in genotype or allele frequencies of the two SNPs between knee OA and control groups in the two populations (all P>0.05). The association was also negative even after stratification by sex, body mass index (BMI) and Kellgren/Lawrence scores. The significant heterogeneity was detected between Chinese and Japanese (both P<0.05). In the Caucasian samples, no significant heterogeneity was detected (both P>0.05). The result of meta-analysis showed significant association between knee OA and rs10947262 in total subjects [summary OR=1.26, 95%confidence intervals (CI)=1.07-1.27, P=3 × 10(-8)] and in Caucasian samples (summary OR=1.28, 95%CI=1.04-1.57, P=0.02). CONCLUSION We demonstrated no association between the two SNPs in human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II/III region and knee OA in Han Chinese population. A significant association was detected between SNP rs10947262 and knee OA in Caucasian subjects. Further replication studies are required to identify the impact of controversial association.

Abstract
The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that physical constraints on fluence gradients in 3D radiation therapy (RT) planning can be incorporated into beamlet optimization explicitly by direct constraint on the spatial variation of the fluence maps or implicitly by using total-variation regularization (TVR). The former method forces the fluence to vary in accordance with the known form of a wedged field and latter encourages the fluence to take the known form of the wedged field by requiring the derivatives of the fluence maps to be piece-wise constant. The performances of the proposed methods are evaluated by using a brain cancer case and a head and neck case. It is found that both approaches are capable of providing clinically sensible 3D RT solutions with monotonically varying fluence maps. For currently available 3D RT delivery schemes based on the use of customized physical or dynamic wedges, constrained optimization seems to be more useful because the optimized fields are directly deliverable. Working in the beamlet domain provides a natural way to model the spatial variation of the beam fluence. The proposed methods take advantage of the fact that 3D RT is a special form of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and finds the optimal plan by searching for fields with a certain type of spatial variation. The approach provides a unified framework for 3D CRT and IMRT plan optimization.
