Abstract
Self-consistent-field theory is used to reproduce the behavior of polymer surface tension with molecular-weight for both lower and higher molecular-weight polymers. The change in behavior of the surface tension between these two regimes is shown to be due to the almost total exclusion of polymer from the nonpolymer bulk phase. The predicted two regime surface tension behavior with molecular-weight and the exclusion explanation are shown to be valid for a range of different polymer compressibilities.

Abstract
Mental retardation (MR) occurs in approximately 3% of the population and therefore significantly impacts public health. Despite this relatively high prevalence, the specific causes of MR remain unknown in most cases, although both genetic and environmental factors are known to contribute. We describe a consanguineous family with autosomal recessive (AR) nonsyndromic MR (NSMR). Because the consanguinity of this family is complex, we explore alternative approaches for generating accurate estimates of the evidence for linkage in this family, and demonstrate evidence for linkage to chromosome 19p13 (lod score ranging from 1.2 to 3.5, depending on assumptions of allele frequencies). Fine mapping of the linked region defined a critical region of 3.6 Mb, which overlaps with a previously reported gene (CC2D1A) for MR. However, no mutations in the coding region of this gene are present in the family we describe. These results suggest that another gene causing autosomal recessive nonsyndromic MR (ARNSMR) is located within this genomic region.

Abstract
Modulated differential scanning calorimetry measurements on bulk (Na(2)O)(x)(GeO(2))(1-x) glasses show a sharp reversibility window in the 14%<x<19% soda range, which correlates well with a broad global minimum in molar volumes. Raman and IR reflectance transverse- and longitudinal-optic mode frequencies exhibit anomalies between x(c)(1) = 14% (stress transition) and x(c)(2) = 19% (rigidity transition), with optical elasticity power laws confirming the nature of the transitions. Birefringence measurements dramatize the macroscopically stress-free nature of the intermediate phase in the reversibility window.

Abstract
A special class of self-assembling peptides has been found to be capable of stabilizing the hydrophobic anticancer agent ellipticine in aqueous solution. Here we study the effect of peptide sequence on the complex formation and its anticancer activity in vitro. Three peptides, EAK16-II, EAK16-IV and EFK16-II, were selected to have either a different charge distribution (EAK16-II vs. EAK16-IV) or a varying hydrophobicity (EAK16-II vs. EFK16-II). Results on their complexation with ellipticine revealed that EAK16-II and EAK16-IV were able to stabilize protonated ellipticine or ellipticine microcrystals depending on the peptide concentration; EFK16-II could stabilize neutral ellipticine molecules and ellipticine microcrystals. These different molecular states of ellipticine were expected to affect ellipticine delivery. The anticancer activity of these complexes was tested against two cancer cell lines: A549 and MCF-7, and related to the cell viability. The viability results showed that the complexes with protonated ellipticine were effective in eradicating both cancer cells (viability <0.05), but their dilutions in water were not stable, leading to a fast decrease in their toxicity. In contrast, the complexes formulated with EFK16-II were relatively stable upon dilution, but their original toxicity was relatively low compared to that with protonated ellipticine. Overall, the charge distribution of the peptides seemed not to affect the complex formation and its therapeutic efficacy in vitro; however, the increase in hydrophobicity of the peptides significantly altered the state of stabilized ellipticine and increased the stability of the complexes. This work provides essential information for peptide sequence design in the development of self-assembling peptide-based delivery of hydrophobic anticancer drugs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To clarify whether hypercholesterolaemia can increase vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs) through the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway, and whether a special angiotensin II receptor blocker, telmisartan, can attenuate VEGF expression induced by hypercholesterolaemia. METHODS Levels of VEGF expression, PI3K activity and angiogenesis in vitro were determined by various methods after HUVECs were incubated with hypercholesterolaemic serum or combined with telmisartan and/or wortmannin. RESULTS We found that hypercholesterolaemic serum (cholesterol > or = 0.08 mmol/L) can increase VEGF expression in HUVECs and that telmisartan cooperates with hypercholesterolaemic serum in promoting VEGF expression. The increased VEGF expression was associated with enhanced PI3K activity and could be significantly inhibited by wortmannin, a potent PI3K inhibitor. Likewise, hypercholesterolaemic serum significantly promoted angiogenesis in vitro, which could be inhibited when PI3K activity was suppressed. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that hypercholesterolaemic serum induces VEGF expression through PI3K in HUVECs and that telmisartan cooperates with hypercholesterolaemia in promoting VEGF expression.

Abstract
We measure the non-linear relation between the shear stress and shear rate in the lyotropic lamellar phase of C12E5/water system. The measured shear thinning exponent changes with the surfactant concentration. A simple rheology theory of a lamellar or smectic phase is proposed with a prediction gamma approximately sigma3/2, where gamma is the shear rate and sigma is the shear stress. We consider that the shear flow passed through the defect structure causes the main dissipation. As the defect line density varies with the shear rate, the shear thinning arises. The defect density is estimated by the dynamic balance between the production and annihilation processes. The defect production is caused by the shear-induced layer undulation instability. The annihilation occurs through the shear-induced defect collision process. Further flow visualization experiment shows that the defect texture correlates strongly with the shear thinning exponent.

Abstract
Ionic-complementary peptides are novel nano-biomaterials with a variety of biomedical applications including potential biosurface engineering. This study presents evidence that a model ionic-complementary peptide EAK16-II is capable of assembling/coating on hydrophilic mica as well as hydrophobic highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surfaces with different nano-patterns. EAK16-II forms randomly oriented nanofibers or nanofiber networks on mica, while ordered nanofibers parallel or oriented 60° or 120° to each other on HOPG, reflecting the crystallographic symmetry of graphite (0001). The density of coated nanofibers on both surfaces can be controlled by adjusting the peptide concentration and the contact time of the peptide solution with the surface. The coated EAK16-II nanofibers alter the wettability of the two surfaces differently: the water contact angle of bare mica surface is measured to be <10°, while it increases to 20.3±2.9° upon 2 h modification of the surface using a 29 µM EAK16-II solution. In contrast, the water contact angle decreases significantly from 71.2±11.1° to 39.4±4.3° after the HOPG surface is coated with a 29 µM peptide solution for 2 h. The stability of the EAK16-II nanofibers on both surfaces is further evaluated by immersing the surface into acidic and basic solutions and analyzing the changes in the nanofiber surface coverage. The EAK16-II nanofibers on mica remain stable in acidic solution but not in alkaline solution, while they are stable on the HOPG surface regardless of the solution pH. This work demonstrates the possibility of using self-assembling peptides for surface modification applications.

Abstract
Aggregates of the self-assembling peptide EAK16II or EAK16IV and oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) were prepared, and their stability upon diluting the solution was investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy. The aggregates prepared at pH 4 and pH 7 did not dissociate after the solution was diluted 5- and 10-fold. The resistance against Escherichia coli exonuclease I of the ODN located in the EAK-ODN aggregates was studied by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) after the ODN had aggregated with EAK16II or EAK16IV at pH 4 or pH 7. The effect that the peptide sequence, peptide concentration, pH, and centrifugation had on protecting the aggregated ODN against nuclease degradation was investigated. Significant nuclease resistance was obtained after the EAK-ODN aggregates had been prepared at pH 4, with an EAK16IV concentration greater than a threshold value, and ensuring that the solution was not centrifuged immediately after sample preparation. Centrifuging the EAK16IV-ODN solution immediately after sample preparation resulted in the loss of this nuclease protection. However, if the solution of EAK-ODN aggregates was centrifuged 24 h after sample preparation, the nuclease protection afforded by the EAK16IV-ODN aggregates to the ODN was maintained even after being subject to a 10-fold dilution and up to 4 rounds of centrifugation over 4 days.

Abstract
This paper reports the annual carbon (C) balance of China's forests during 1901-2001 estimated using the Integrated Terrestrial Ecosystem C-budget model (InTEC). Annual carbon source and sink distributions are simulated for the same period using various spatial datasets including land cover and leaf area index (LAI) obtained from remote sensing, soil texture, climate, forest age, and nitrogen deposition. During 1901-1949, China's forests were a source of 21.0+/-7.8 Tg C yr(-1) due to disturbances (human activities). Its size increased to 122.3+/-25.3 Tg C yr(-1) during 1950-1987 due to intensified human activities in the late 1950s, early 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. The forests became large sinks of 176.7+/-44.8 Tg C yr(-1) during 1988-2001, owing to large-scale plantation and forest regrowth in previously disturbed areas as well as growth stimulation by nondisturbance factors such as climatic warming, atmospheric CO(2) fertilization, and N deposition. From 1901 to 2001, China's forests were a small carbon source of 3.32 Pg C, about 32.9+/-22.3 Tg C yr(-1). The overall C balance in biomass from InTEC generally agrees with previous results derived from forest inventories of China's forests. InTEC results also include C stock variation in soils and are therefore more comprehensive than previous results. The uncertainty in InTEC results is still large, but it can be reduced if a detailed forest age map becomes available.
