Abstract
UNLABELLED Doxorubicin (DOX) is used in pediatric cancer treatment. This study assessed the effects of 7 weeks of DOX and 10-week recovery on bone quality and biomechanical properties in sedentary and exercised Wistar rats. DOX decreases femur diaphysis radial growth and biomechanical properties. Some of these DOX effects were aggravated by exercise. INTRODUCTION Bone growth in pre-pubertal years critically influences adult fracture risk. DOX is widely used in the treatment of pediatric cancers, but there is limited evidence on its potential negative effects on bone growth. Exercise improves bone growth in children, but there is no evidence if it protects against DOX-induced bone toxicity. This study investigates the early and intermediate effects of a 7-week course of DOX on bone histomorphometry and strength in sedentary and exercised growing animal models. METHODS Sixty-eight male Wistar rats (8 weeks) were treated with DOX (2 mg kg-1) or vehicle for 7 weeks and afterward housed in standard cages or in cages with a running wheel and killed 2 or 10 weeks after last DOX administration. Femurs and blood were collected for assaying geometry, trabecular microarchitecture (histology), biomechanical properties (three-point bending and shearing of the femoral neck), bone calcium content and density (atomic absorption spectroscopy), and bone turnover markers (ELISA). RESULTS DOX treatment reduced the femur diaphysis radial growth, with DOX-treated animals having a lower tissue area, cortical area, cortical thickness, and moment of inertia. DOX also decreased distal femur trabecular bone volume and trabecular number and increased trabecular separation. Femur diaphysis stiffness and maximum load were also reduced in past DOX-treated animals. Exercise was shown to worsen the effects of past DOX treatment on the femur diaphysis mechanical properties. CONCLUSION DOX negatively affects bone geometry, trabecular microarchitecture, and femur mechanical properties in growing Wistar rats. Exercise further aggravates the detrimental effects of past DOX treatment on bone mechanical properties.

Abstract
The relation between unusual Mexican-hat band dispersion, ferromagnetism, and ferroelasticity is investigated using a combination of analytical, first-principles, and phenomenological methods. The class of material with Mexican-hat band edge is studied using the α-SnO monolayer as a prototype. Such a band edge causes a van Hove singularity diverging with 1/sqrt[E], and a charge doping in these bands can lead to time-reversal symmetry breaking. Herein, we show that a material with Mexican-hat band dispersion, α-SnO, can be ferroelastic or paraelastic depending on the number of layers. Also, an unexpected multiferroic phase is obtained in a range of hole density for which the material presents ferromagnetism and ferroelasticity simultaneously.

Abstract
Vaginal infections with Candida spp. frequently occur in women of childbearing age. A small proportion of these women experience recurrent vulvovaginal candidosis (RVVC), which is characterized by at least three episodes of infection in one year. In addition to known risk factors such as antibiotics, diabetes, or pregnancy, host genetic variation and inflammatory pathways such as the IL-1/Th17 axis have been reported to play a substantial role in the pathogenesis of RVVC. In this study, we assessed a variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorphism in the NLRP3 gene that encodes a component of the inflammasome, processing the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18. A total of 270 RVVC patients and 583 healthy controls were analyzed, and increased diseases susceptibility was associated with the presence of the 12/9 genotype. Furthermore, functional studies demonstrate that IL-1β production at the vaginal surface is higher in RVVC patients bearing the 12/9 genotype compared to controls, whereas IL-1Ra levels were decreased and IL-18 levels remained unchanged. These findings suggest that IL-1β-mediated hyperinflammation conveyed by the NLRP3 gene plays a causal role in the pathogenesis of RVVC and may identify this pathway as a potential therapeutic target in the disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aims to compare the molecular gene expression during ischemia reperfusion injury. Several surgical times were considered: in the beginning of the harvesting (T0), at the end of the cold ischemia period (T1), and after reperfusion (T2) and compared with graft dysfunction after liver transplant (OLT). METHODS We studied 54 patients undergoing OLT. Clinical, laboratory data, and histologic data (Suzuki classification) as well as the Survival Outcomes Following Liver Transplantation (SOFT) score were used and compared with the molecular gene expression of the following genes: Interleukin (IL)-1b, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, perforin, E-selectin (SELE), Fas-ligand, granzyme B, heme oxygenase-1, and nitric oxide synthetase. RESULTS Fifteen patients presented with graft dysfunction according to SOFT criteria. No relevant data were obtained by comparing the variables graft dysfunction and histologic variables. We observed a statistically significant relation between SELE at T0 (P = .013) and IL-1β at T0 (P = .028) and early graft dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that several genetically determined proinflammatory expressions may play a critical role in the development of graft dysfunction after OLT.

Abstract
Costs of meningococcal outbreaks comprising costs incurred during the disease response phase and the disease surveillance phase are substantial. The increasing occurrence of meningococcal cases in outbreak situations and the associated control costs should appropriately be considered in economic evaluations of vaccination programs in countries affected by these outbreaks. More studies documenting outbreak-control strategies in terms of costs and resource use are needed. Background. The impact of meningitis outbreaks is substantial. We aim to calculate the costs of meningococcal outbreaks in Brazil and Colombia from the healthcare system perspective. Methods. A review of the literature was performed on costs associated with meningococcal outbreak in Latin America. Structured interviews capturing information about the use of resources, expenses allocated to treatment of infection, immunization campaigns, and response activities during the outbreak and disease surveillance pre- and postoutbreak were directed at local health authorities in Brazil and Colombia to foster a greater understanding of the economic impact of meningococcal outbreaks. All costs were expressed in 2014 US values. Results. The Vila Brandina outbreak in Brazil reported 3 cases that were associated with a total investigation and outbreak management cost of $34 425 ($11 475 per notified case), representing 2.7 more than the annual gross domestic product per capita in Brazil. In contrast, the outbreak in Cartagena de Indias in Colombia reported 6 cases at a cost of the disease response phase of $735 or 9.5% of the annual gross domestic product per capita ($123 per notified case). For the disease surveillance phase, the costs ranged from $3935 (in Cartagena de Indias) to $6667 (in Vila Brandina). Serogroups B and C were responsible for the majority of meningococcal outbreaks reported in Brazil and Colombia. Conclusions. Findings of this study underscore the importance of meningococcal disease in the region. Future research should focus on a more detailed investigation of costs of meningococcal outbreaks covering all phases of an outbreak.

Abstract
The stability of the surface of in situ cleaved black phosphorus crystals upon exposure to atmosphere is investigated with synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopy. After 2 days atmosphere exposure a stable subnanometer layer of primarily P2O5 forms at the surface. The work function increases by 0.1 eV from 3.9 eV for as-cleaved black phosphorus to 4.0 eV after formation of the 0.4 nm thick oxide, with phosphorus core levels shifting by <0.1 eV. The results indicate minimal charge transfer, suggesting that the oxide layer is suitable for passivation or as an interface layer for further dielectric deposition.
