Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is characterized by the Philadelphia chromosome, an abnormally shortened chromosome 22. It is the result of a reciprocal translocation of chromosomes 9 and 22, creating BCR-ABL fusion transcripts, b3a2, b2a2, and e1a2. The aim of our study was to determine the type of BCR-ABL fusion transcripts for molecular diagnosis and investigate the frequency of BCR-ABL fusion transcripts in CML patients by multiplex RT-PCR in CML. MATERIALS AND METHODS A single reaction with multiple primers multiplex PCR was used to detect and investigate the type and frequency in 200 CML patients among which 116, 33, and 51 were in CP, AP, and BC phase, respectively. RESULTS The study included 200 CML patients, among whom breakpoints in b3a2, b2a2 transcripts were detected in 68% and 24%, respectively, while 8% of the patients showed both b3a2/b2a2. A statistically significant difference was seen between frequency of BCR-ABL fusion transcripts and gender (P = 0.03), molecular response (P = 0.04), and hematological response (P = 0.05). However, there was no correlation found between frequencies of BCR-/ABL fusion transcripts and other clinicopathological parameters like age, type of therapy, thrombocytopenia, and white blood cell count. CONCLUSION Multiplex reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction is useful and saves time in the detection of BCR-ABL variants; the occurrence of these transcripts associated with CML can assist in prognosis and treatment of disease.

Abstract
The isolation of BTV-1 serotype from cattle in India and its phylogenetic relationship based on VP2 gene has been reported. Virus (JBP42/12/Ind) is isolated in BHK-21 cell line from blood sample tested positive for BTV antigen in sandwich ELISA from asymptomatic cattle. Full length VP2 gene of cattle isolate was amplified, cloned and sequenced. On BLAST analysis virus isolate was identified as BTV-1 serotype. Phylogenetic tree based on complete VP2 coding region segregated Indian isolates, Australian isolates and African/European isolates in three distinct clusters. Segregation of Indian BTV-1 isolates at close proximity to the monophyletic cluster of Australian BTV-1 isolates indicates the present isolate as "eastern topotype' of BTV. Multiple alignments of VP2 gene nucleotide sequences suggest that, Indian BTV-1 isolate is more closely related to Australian BTV-1 isolates; where 14.1% to 14.4% and 6.8% to 7.4% divergence was observed at nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequence level respectively.

^{7}Be(n,α)^{4}He Reaction and the Cosmological Lithium Problem: Measurement of the Cross Section in a Wide Energy Range at n_TOF at CERN. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2016; 117:152701. Abstract
The energy-dependent cross section of the ^{7}Be(n,α)^{4}He reaction, of interest for the so-called cosmological lithium problem in big bang nucleosynthesis, has been measured for the first time from 10 meV to 10 keV neutron energy. The challenges posed by the short half-life of ^{7}Be and by the low reaction cross section have been overcome at n_TOF thanks to an unprecedented combination of the extremely high luminosity and good resolution of the neutron beam in the new experimental area (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN, the availability of a sufficient amount of chemically pure ^{7}Be, and a specifically designed experimental setup. Coincidences between the two alpha particles have been recorded in two Si-^{7}Be-Si arrays placed directly in the neutron beam. The present results are consistent, at thermal neutron energy, with the only previous measurement performed in the 1960s at a nuclear reactor. The energy dependence reported here clearly indicates the inadequacy of the cross section estimates currently used in BBN calculations. Although new measurements at higher neutron energy may still be needed, the n_TOF results hint at a minor role of this reaction in BBN, leaving the long-standing cosmological lithium problem unsolved.

Abstract
Aim A national atrial fibrillation (AF) registry was conducted under the aegis of the Indian Heart Rhythm Society (IHRS), to capture epidemiological data-type of AF, clinical presentation and comorbidities, current treatment practices, and 1-year follow-up outcomes. Methods A total of 1537 patients were enrolled from 24 sites in India in the IHRS-AF registry from July 2011 to August 2012. Their baseline characteristics and follow-up data were recorded in case report forms and subsequently analyzed. Results The average age of Indian AF patients was 54.7 years. There was a marginal female preponderance – 51.5% females and 48.5% males. At baseline, 20.4% had paroxysmal AF; 33% had persistent AF; 35.1% had permanent AF and 11% had first AF episode. At one-year follow-up, 45.6% patients had permanent AF. Rheumatic valvular heart disease (RHD) was present in 47.6% of patients. Hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, and diabetes were seen in 31.4%, 18.7%, 16.2%, and 16.1%, respectively. Rate control was the strategy used in 75.2% patients, digoxin and beta-blockers being the most frequently prescribed rate-control drugs. Oral anticoagulation (OAC) drugs were used in 70% of patients. The annual mortality was 6.5%, hospitalization 8%, and incidence of stroke 1%. Conclusions In India, AF patients are younger and RHD is still the most frequent etiology. Almost two-third of the patients have persistent/permanent AF. At one-year follow-up, there is a significant mortality and morbidity in AF patients in India.

Abstract
Context and introductionThe recent crash of Germanwings Flight 4U9525 appears to be the latest act of aircraft-assisted murder-suicide. The psychiatric preventive aspects of the murder-suicide need to be discussed, and effective measures for recognition and prevention of this murder-suicide are needed. Aircrew health is biased towards the physical ailments, and evaluation manuals have not discussed the mental health aspects, especially preventive strategies. These strategies involve multifactorial interventions, their applicability and usefulness are not globally validated. Objectives and methodsThanatology has since long, focused on early detection of mental distress and elucidating behavioural and psychological factors that predispose towards attempts at self-harm. Aircrew forms a different group from the general population. The recognition and preventive strategies in this special group, must, therefore, be tailored to this group with its special characteristics.Data sources, study selection and data synthesis publications were identified via electronic searches using multiple search terms related to suicide prevention. The available effective preventive measures were juxtaposed on the current concepts in aerospace psychiatry.ConclusionsMurder-suicide by aircrew is an event that is the culmination of undetected, ignored or even condoned discrete events that gradually progress and insidiously escalate. The importance of psychological factors in this catastrophic event needs to be disseminated amongst psychiatrists, and aircrew medical examiners. Ascertaining which components of suicide prevention programmes are effective in early recognition of aircrew who may attempt or complete the murder-suicide and putting into practice these to optimize the use of limited resources, is therefore essential and necessary.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
We have fabricated protein polymer-gold nanoparticle (P-GNP) nanocomposites that exhibit enhanced binding and delivery properties of the small hydrophobic molecule drug, curcumin, to the model breast cancer cell line, MCF-7. These hybrid biomaterials are constructed via in situ GNP templated-synthesis with genetically engineered histidine tags. The P-GNP nanocomposites exhibit enhanced small molecule loading, sustained release and increased uptake by MCF-7 cells. When compared to the proteins polymers alone, the P-GNPs demonstrate a greater than 7-fold increase in curcumin binding, a nearly 50% slower release profile and more than 2-fold increase in cellular uptake of curcumin. These results suggest that P-GNP nanocomposites serve as promising candidates for drug delivery vehicles.

Abstract
To study the influence of season on oxidative status of buffalo semen and their association with semen characteristics and seminal plasma proteins, ejaculates were collected twice a week in winter, summer and rainy seasons from six adult Bhadawari buffalo bulls. The neat semen was analyzed for semen characteristics immediately after collection and oxidative status viz. lipid peroxidation (LPO), catalase (CAT), super oxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and total protein (TP) were estimated in seminal plasma. The protein profiling was carried out by one-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The significant effect of season was observed on TP, SOD activity and % protein fractions of seminal plasma proteins of buffalo bulls. The TP values showed positive correlation with ejaculate volume (EV), sperm concentration (SC), and % live-dead (LD) and negative correlation with progressive motility (PM), and hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOST). The SOD activity showed positive correlation with PM, LD, HOST and % acrosoamal integrity (AI). Besides that, results showed correlation of TP with 6.5, 38 and 66 kDa proteins, LPO with 70, 72, 84 and 86 kDa proteins, CAT with 70 kDa and 86 kDa proteins, and SOD with 6.5, 24.5, 44.5, 70 and 72 kDa proteins. In conclusion, this study indicated that TP and SOD activity of seminal plasma of buffalo bulls were influenced by season and were found to be associated with some of the semen characteristics and expression of seminal plasma proteins.

Abstract
We compute the photoemission intensity and polarization for the surface states in topological insulators. Due to the chirality and linear energy dispersion the effective electron-photon coupling is normalized by the tunneling amplitude (τ) into the vacuum. We investigate a chiral Dirac Hamiltonian for different cases: helical, Zeeman and warping, allowing us to study spin textures. Using the Green's function formalism we obtain exact results for the emitted photoelectrons to second order in the laser field. The number of emitted photoelectrons is sensitive to the laser coherent state intensity whereas the photoelectron polarization is sensitive to the surface topology of electronic states and incoming photon polarization.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION TP53 gene is the most frequently altered tumor suppressor gene in breast cancer. It has been observed that MDM2 plays a central role in regulating the TP53 pathway. This study aimed to investigate the role of TP53 Arg72Pro and MDM2 T309G polymorphisms in breast cancer patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD The TP53 (Arg72Pro) and MDM2 (T309G) polymorphisms were studied in a hospital-based case control study by AS-PCR in 100 breast cancer patients and 100 healthy control subjects. RESULTS It was observed that TP53 Arg72Pro polymorphism was significantly associated with breast cancer (χ (2) = 9.92, p = 0.007). A significantly increased breast cancer risk was associated with the Proline allele [odds ratio 1.84 (95 % CI: 1.22-2.77), risk ratio 1.34 (95 % CI: 1.11-1.63), p value 0.003], HER2/neu status (p = 0.01) and distant metastasis (p = 0.05). On the other hand, we have found a significant correlation between MDM2 (T309G) polymorphism with HER2/neu status (χ (2) = 11.14, p = 0.003) and distant metastasis (p value = 0.04). CONCLUSION Our finding suggests that TP53 (Arg72Pro) polymorphism may play a significant role as risk factor for breast cancer in north Indian breast cancer patients. While MDM2 (T309G) polymorphism may not be directly associated with the risk of breast cancer occurrence in the same population, but it may play role in disease progression by triggering TP53.

Abstract
Classical swine fever virus (CSFV), the causative agent of classical swine fever, belongs to the family Flaviviridae and genus Pestivirus. Some pestiviruses exhibit cytopathic effect in cell culture but exact phenomenon is unknown. Over expression of NS2-3 gene, presence of defective interfering particle and exaltation of Newcastle disease virus (END) phenomenon could be the reasons of cytopathogenicity. In the present study, a CSFV isolate exhibiting cytopathic effect (CPE) in Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cell line was characterized. To characterize cytopathogenicity of such isolate, END test was carried out. Interference of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) in MDCK adapted CSFV was confirmed by RT-PCR and virus neutralization test. Absence of CPE and NDV specific nucleic acid after neutralization confirmed the induction of CPE by NDV. Further, identity of the CSFV isolate in MDCK cell line by immunoperoxidase test, immunoblotting and RT-PCR post NDV neutralization established the virus replication without CPE (non-cytopathic isolate). Findings suggest that, there could be a chance of mixed infection of both CSFV and NDV in the piglet from which the sample was collected for virus isolation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND MicroRNAs (miRs) have been implicated in the etiology of various human cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of the expression of three members--miR 200a, miR 200b, and miR 200c belonging to the miR-200 family with clinicopathological characteristics and their impact on the progression of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). MATERIALS AND METHODS Total RNA from serum was isolated by Trizol method, polyadenylated, and reverse transcribed into cDNA. Expression levels of miR-200a, miR-200b, and miR-200c were detected by using miRNA qRT-PCR. We measured miR expression in 70 serum samples of EOC patients with matched controls using U6 snRNA as a reference. Levels of miR expression was compared with distinct clinicopathological features. RESULTS Expression of miR-200a was found to be greater than six-fold (p = 0.01), miR-200b and miR-200c greater than three-fold (p = 0.01) in comparison with matched normal controls. Association of miRNA expression with clinicopathological factors and progression was statistically evaluated. The expression levels of miR-200a and miR-200c were found to be significantly associated with disease progression (p = 0.04 and p < 0.001, respectively). miR-200a overexpression was found be associated with tumor histology and stage. Patients with lymph node metastasis showed significant elevation of miR-200c (p = 0.006). The AUC in ROC curve also indicated that serum levels of miR-200a and miR-200c might be worthwhile as a diagnostic tool in the near future. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that miR-200a, miR-200b, and miR-200c overexpressions are associated with the aggressive tumor progression and be recognized as reliable markers to predict the prognosis and survival in EOC patients.

When linear stability does not exclude nonlinear instability. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2015; 114:214101. Abstract
We describe a mechanism that results in the nonlinear instability of stationary states even in the case where the stationary states are linearly stable. This instability is due to the nonlinearity-induced coupling of the linearization's internal modes of negative energy with the continuous spectrum. In a broad class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations considered, the presence of such internal modes guarantees the nonlinear instability of the stationary states in the evolution dynamics. To corroborate this idea, we explore three prototypical case examples: (a) an antisymmetric soliton in a double-well potential, (b) a twisted localized mode in a one-dimensional lattice with cubic nonlinearity, and (c) a discrete vortex in a two-dimensional saturable lattice. In all cases, we observe a weak nonlinear instability, despite the linear stability of the respective states.

Abstract
BACKGROUND B cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) gene is a well-known regulator of apoptosis and a key element in cancer development and progression. A regulatory (-938C>A, rs2279115) single-nucleotide polymorphism in the inhibitory P2 BCL-2 gene promoter generates significantly different BCL-2 promoter activities and has been associated with different clinical outcomes in various malignancies. The aim of the present study was to analyze the possible influence of the (-938C>A) SNP on the risk and survival of Indian patients suffering from NSCLC. MATERIALS AND METHODS A hospital-based case-control study of 155 age- and sex-matched patients diagnosed with NSCLC and 155 cancer-free controls was conducted and genotyped by performing PIRA-PCR to elucidate the putative association between clinical outcome and genotypes of BCL-2 (-938C>A, rs2279115). The association of the polymorphism with the survival of NSCLC patients was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier curves. RESULTS In Indian NSCLC, patients increased risk of developing NSCLC was found to be associated with BCL-2 (-938) CC genotype, [OR 3.68 (1.92-6.79), RR 1.87 (1.35-2.57) and RD 31.03 (16.79-45.27) p 0.00006 for CC and OR 2.08 (1.18-3.66), RR 1.36 (1.08-1.71) and RD 17.74 (4.68-30.81) p 0.01 for AC genotype]. Patients homozygous for C allele exhibited a significant poor overall survival compared with patients displaying AC + CC or AC or AA genotype [median survival (months) 8 vs. 11 vs. 14 vs. 35.5 (p < 0.0001)]. In addition, significant associations were observed between TNM stage, histological type, distant metastases status, family history of any cancer, gender and age group of NSCLC patients with BCL-2 (-938C>A) polymorphism. CONCLUSION Genetic polymorphism in the inhibitory P2 promoter region of anti-apoptotic BCL-2 genes contributes to the risk of developing non-small-cell lung cancer in Indian population. BCL-2 (-938CC) genotype was an independent adverse prognostic factor for patients with NSCLC.

Abstract
AIM To study the genetic variability and population structure of Colletotrichum species found to be associated with anthracnose of chilli in the north-eastern region of India. METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty-three Colletotrichum isolates were obtained from infected chilli fruits and leaves from the chilli growing regions of north-eastern Uttar Pradesh, India, identified as Colletotrichum capsici and Colletotrichum acutatum using species-specific primers. Genetic variability among the isolates was analysed using RAPD and ISSR markers. The RAPD marker efficiently grouped the isolates at species level, while ISSR marker was effective in separating the isolates based on geographical origin. In vitro pathogenic test revealed the inability of C. acutatum isolates to infect unripe fruits, while C. capsici isolates were found to infect both ripe and unripe fruits at disease severity scale 7-9. Growth rate on different media was recorded to cross-confirm the classification of isolates, which clearly grouped the two species into distinct group on PCA plot. CONCLUSIONS Two species, viz. C. capsici and C. acutatum, prevalent in the region were found to infect the fruits at postripening stage. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The present study proposes the implementation of management strategies at postripening stages of the crop to control the spread of disease, thereby leading to increment in production of chilli in the given region.

Abstract
Ruminant placentas synthesize pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) during pregnancy, which serve as biomarkers of pregnancy. The present study was conducted to verify, whether PAGs are expressed in buffalo placenta by using lectin-based affinity chromatography and peptide mass finger printing (PMF). Fetal cotyledonary tissues were collected from gravid uteri procured from slaughtered house. Proteins were extracted and subjected to wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) lectin affinity chromatography to isolate the PAGs. The isolated glycoproteins were separated by one-dimensional SDS-PAGE. PMF results of the 75 kDa protein revealed presence of two PAGs (PAG-7 and -11). The PAG-7 consisted of about 170 mass signals, of which 16 were assigned to corresponding/translated cDNA sequences of buffalo PAG-7, leading to sequence coverage of 40%. PMF result of PAG-11 showed 170 mass signals, of which 15 were assigned to buffalo PAG-11, leading to sequence coverage of 34%. In conclusion, the glycoprotein isolated from placental extract corresponding to 75 kDa band on SDS PAGE gel was a mixture of PAG-7 and -11, which may help in development of suitable diagnostics for pregnancy in buffalo.

Abstract
We develop a theory for optical Faraday rotation noise in two-dimensional Dirac materials. In contrast to spin noise in conventional semiconductors, we find that the Faraday rotation fluctuations are influenced not only by spins but also the valley degrees of freedom attributed to intervalley scattering processes. We illustrate our theory with two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides and discuss signatures of spin and valley noise in the Faraday noise power spectrum. We propose optical Faraday noise spectroscopy as a technique for probing both spin and valley relaxation dynamics in two-dimensional Dirac materials.
