Abstract
In this article, we describe a subgroup-specific amplification assay for HLA-DQA1 that encompasses the whole coding region and allows us to sequence full-length HLA-DQA1 genes. We introduce the novel alleles HLA-DQA1*01:10 and HLA-DQA1*01:11. Moreover, we were able to confirm the full-length genomic sequence data of the alleles HLA-DQA1*01:07, HLA-DQA1*03:01:01, HLA-DQA1*03:02, HLA-DQA1*04:01:02, HLA-DQA1*04:02, HLA-DQA1*05:03, HLA-DQA1*05:05:01:02 and HLA-DQA1*06:01:01. A complete genomic overview of all six HLA-DQA1 allele groups is now available from the submission of our data to the IMGT/HLA database. Because our approach facilitates the analysis of all HLA-DQA1 allele sequences, HLA-DQA1 may become the first HLA locus from which all subgroup members will be known in detail in the near future.

Abstract
Metabolites of the epidermal lipoxygenase-3 (eLOX-3) are involved in various metabolic pathways. Most unexpectedly, intra-amniotic delivery of eLOX-3 to mice at gestational day 14.5, both via an adenoviral vector and as recombinant protein, resulted in fetal growth restriction and intrauterine death. Periodic acid-Schiff staining and RT-PCR analysis of placentae from fetuses exposed to eLOX-3 indicated a lack of glycogen trophoblasts in the junctional zone. Placenta-specific gene expression was altered. Thus, the observed prenatal toxicity of eLOX-3 could be due to a strong effect on placental development.

Abstract
Impedance-controlled endometrial ablation (NovaSure) is commonly used to treat premenopausal heavy menstrual bleeding in Lothian, Scotland. Using postal questionnaires, we assessed patient satisfaction, treatment success and post-procedure symptoms in a cohort of women who had NovaSure treatment between January 2007 and May 2009. The response rate was 61.2% (115/188): 90.4% (104/115) of women were satisfied and would recommend the procedure; 36.8% (42/114) of women were amenorrhoeic at follow-up (mean = 497 days) and NovaSure significantly improved levels of both menstrual bleeding and pain (p < 0.01). Of the women, 67.0% (77/115) reported symptoms such as discomfort, vaginal discharge and bleeding/spotting within 6 weeks following NovaSure. A total of 13.9% (16/115) required further treatment following NovaSure, including hysterectomy. Patient satisfaction with NovaSure was high. Preoperative counselling needs to include information on character and duration of postoperative symptoms. Future research could compare patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes between NovaSure and the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the recent increased focus on evidence-based medicine, it is critical that diseases and syndromes have accurate and complete descriptions, including standardized and widely accepted terminologies. Standardizing these descriptions and terminologies is necessary to develop tools such as computerized data entry forms and classification criteria. This need is especially true for diseases that are relatively uncommon, such as uveitis. OBJECTIVES To develop a standardized and internationally accepted terminology for the field of uveitis. METHODS The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) Working Group (WG) is an international group of 79 uveitis experts from 18 countries and 62 clinical centers. Initial terminology was developed utilizing a "modified" green field approach, which was enhanced through web-based surveys and teleconferences via a "modified" Delphi technique. Terms were mapped provisionally into ontologic dimensions for each syndrome. The Working Group then met and utilized nominal group techniques as a formalized method of finalizing the mappings. RESULTS Mapping of terms into dimensions to describe 28 major uveitic diseases was confirmed using nominal group techniques (achieving super-majority consensus) for each of the diseases at a meeting of the entire WG. CONCLUSIONS The SUN WG utilized an informatics-based approach to develop a standardized and internationally accepted terminology for the uveitides.

Abstract
In this multicentre study, sera from 803 retransplant candidates, including 775 kidney transplant recipients, were analysed with regard to the presence and specificity of anti-HLA alloantibodies of the IgA isotype using a modified microsphere-based platform. Of the kidney recipients, nearly one-third (n = 237, 31%) had IgA alloantibodies. Mostly, these antibodies were found in sera that also harboured IgG alloantibodies that could be found in a total of 572 (74%) of patients. Interestingly, IgA anti-HLA antibodies were preferentially targeting HLA class I antigens in contrast to those of the IgG isotype, which targeted mostly both HLA class I and II antigens. Donor specificity of the IgA alloantibodies could be established for over half of the 237 patients with IgA alloantibodies (n = 124, 52%). A further 58 patients had specificities against HLA-C or HLA-DP, for which no information regarding donor typing was available. In summary, these data showed in a large cohort of retransplant candidates that IgA alloantibodies occur in about one-third of patients, about half of these antibodies being donor specific.

Abstract
Ocular syphilis presenting initially as various manifestations of intraocular inflammation is a rare but an important manifestation of syphilis. Ocular phenotypes are varied and mimic other infectious and non-infectious ocular diseases. Uncertainties exist in optimal management of ocular manifestations of syphilis due to a lack of evidence from randomized controlled trials. In this article we report seven cases of syphilis representing a spectrum of ophthalmic manifestations and highlight key issues around diagnosis and management. We underscore the importance of interdisciplinary approach by ophthalmologists and genitourinary (GU) physicians in improving the outcome of this subgroup of patients in the absence of robust evidence.
