Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The genetic variant (Trp64Arg) is a missense mutation located within the beta3 adrenoreceptor (Beta3AR). The aim of our study was to investigate the influence of Trp64Arg polymorphism in the Beta3AR gene on insulin resistance in obese patients and the allelic distribution of this polymorphismin a geographic area of Spain. DESIGN A population of 264 obese patients was analyzed. A bioimpedance, blood pressure, an assessment of nutritional intake, and biochemical parameters were measured. The beta 3 adrenoreceptor gene polymorphism(Trp64Arg) was genotyped. RESULTS Two hundred and twenty six patients (77 males/149 females) (85.6%) had the genotype Trp64/Trp64 (wild type group) with and average age of 41.12 +/- 13.1 years and 38 patients (16 males/22 females) Trp64/Arg64 (14.4%) (mutant type group) with an average age of 40.5 +/- 12.7 years. High frequencies of Arg64 allele were observed in Salamanca and Valladolid. In the mutant type group, HOMA (3.75 +/- 2.77 vs 5.27 +/- 5.4; p < 0.05) was higher than wild type group. CONCLUSION The finding of this study is the association of the Trp64/Arg64 Beta3AR with higher levels of HOMA. Frequencies of this polymorphism are different among geographic areas.

Abstract
Se ha realizado un estudio epidemiológico observacional de tipo transversal para conocer los factores que actúan sobre la seropositividad de los principales agentes víricos del síndrome respiratorio bovino: el herpesvirus bovino tipo 1 (HVB1), el virus de la diarrea vírica bovina (VDVB), el virus respiratorio sincitial bovino (VRSB) y el virus de la parainfluenza 3 (VPI3). Se tomaron muestras de sangre de terneros procedentes de explotaciones lecheras situadas en las provincias argentinas de Córdoba y Santa Fé, y se cumplimentaron cuestionarios epide-miológicos. Los análisis serológicos se realizaron mediante la técnica ELISA. En total se tomaron muestras de sangre de 852 terneros procedentes de 55 explotaciones entre los años 2000 y 2002. Se realizaron cuatro modelos epidemiológicos mediante regresión logística, uno por cada virus donde, entre otras, aparecen variables asociadas a la infección relacionadas con la edad del ternero, la estación del año, el número de animales, la alimentación, las vacunaciones o el sistema de crianza.

Abstract
AIMS Breast milk has been described as a source of bacteria influencing the development of the infant gut microbiota. Up to the present, few studies have been focused on the application of culture-independent techniques to study bacterial diversity in breast milk. In this context, the aim of this study was to characterize the breast milk microbiota of healthy women by applying the quantitative real-time PCR technique (qRTi-PCR). METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 50 breast milk samples were analysed by qPCR to assess the presence of different bacterial genera or clusters, including the Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Staphylococcus, Bacteroides, Enterococcus, Streptococcus, Clostridium cluster IV and Clostridium cluster XIVa-XIVb groups. Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus were the predominant groups and were detected in all the samples. Clostridium XIVa-XIVb and Enterococcus were detected in most of the samples in contrast to the Bacteroides and Clostridium cluster IV groups. CONCLUSIONS Our results confirm the abundance of bacterial DNA in breast milk samples and suggest that the qRTi-PCR technique has a huge potential in the microbiological analysis of human milk. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY qRTi-PCR allowed the detection of bacterial DNA of streptococci, staphylococci, lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria in the samples of human milk, which confirms that breast milk can be an important source of bacteria and bacterial DNA to the infant gut.

Abstract
Anatomic imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been used for many years in clinical oncology. The emergence of positron emission tomography (PET) more than a decade ago was a major breakthrough in the early diagnosis of malignant lesions, as it was based on tumour metabolism and not on anatomy. The merger of both techniques into one thanks to PET-CT cameras has made this technology the most important tool in the management of cancer patients. PET/CT with 18F-FDG is increasingly being used for staging, restaging and treatment monitoring for cancer patients with different types of tumours (lung, breast, colorectal, lymphoma, melanoma, head and neck etc.). At many institutions, PET/CT has replaced separately acquired PET and CT examinations for many oncologic indications. This replacement has occurred despite the fact that only a relatively small number of well designed prospective studies have verified imaging findings against the gold standard of histopathologic tissue evaluation. However, a large number of studies have used acceptable reference standards, such as pathology, imaging and other clinical follow-up findings, for validating PET/CT findings. The impact on the management of patients and the benefits from the information obtained from this anatomo-metabolic procedure justify the term "clinical oncology based on PET-CT" as a new concept to be applied in clinical practice.

Abstract
The water rat Nectomys squamipes is endemic in Brazil and found naturally infected with Schistosoma mansoni. Helminth communities, their prevalences, intensity of infection and abundance in N. squamipes in an endemic area of schistosomiasis in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were studied. Four species of nematodes (Physaloptera bispiculata, Syphacia venteli, Hassalstrongylus epsilon and Litomosoides chagasfilhoi) were recovered in 85.3%, two trematodes (Schistosoma mansoni and Echinostoma paraensei) in 38.8% and one cestode species (Raillietina sp.) in 1.7% of rats examined. Rats were infected with up to five helminth species each, and these were highly aggregated in distribution. For H. epsilon and S. venteli, intensities and abundances were higher in adult male and subadult female hosts, respectively. Hassaltrongylus epsilon, P. bispiculata, S. venteli and S. mansoni were classified as dominant species, L. chagasfilhoi and E. paraensei as co-dominant and Raillietina sp. as subordinated. No significant correlation was found in the intensity of infecton between each pair of helminth species. Schistosoma mansoni was not related to any other helminth species according to their infection rates, althougth S. mansoni was well established in the natural helminth comunity of the water rat.

Abstract
The inbred Roman High- (RHA-I) and Roman Low-Avoidance (RLA-I) rats, psychogenetically selected for rapid (RHA-I) vs. extremely poor (RLA-I) acquisition of two-way active avoidance, exhibit a lower or a higher level of fearfulness, respectively, that can be observed in many laboratory anxiety models. The present study analyzed the performance of female RLA-I and RHA-I rats in a successive positive contrast situation induced during one-way avoidance learning. Three groups of RLA-I and three of RHA-I rats (1-30, 30-30 and 1-1 groups, the numbers stand for the time spent in the safe compartment during the first and second phase of training) were trained to avoid an electric foot-shock administered in a "danger" compartment, by running from this compartment to a "safe" one. Only RLA-I rats showed a significant positive contrast effect, in such a way that the reinforcement increase from the lower (1 s spent in safety) to the higher reward (30 s) led to a response enhancement, surpassing the performance of rats trained with the low (1-1 s) or the high (30-30 s) reward from the beginning of training. The results are discussed in the context of an opponent process theory based upon the interaction between the motivational strength of fear and the incentive value of relief taking place during one-way avoidance learning.

Abstract
We study the sponge phase of the mixed non-ionic/ionic surfactant system C14DMAO-TTAB-hexanol-brine. Our aim is to determine if this phase exists in this mixed system and if it preserves or changes its structure when the relative amount of the charged surfactant is increased in the mixture. SAXS, FFEM, and conductivity results show that for the same bilayer volume fraction the sponge phase preserves its global structure. We propose a method to determine the geometrical obstruction factor from electrical conductivity measurements in ionic sponge phases. Analysis of lamellar phases in the same system shows that the bilayer thickness increases when the ionic surfactant concentration is increased.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE It has been established that periodontal diseases are more prevalent and of greater severity in diabetic patients than in nondiabetic patients. Recent studies have underscored the role of monocytes and macrophages in periodontal tissue inflammation and destruction in diabetic patients. Although it has been shown that monocytes isolated from diabetic patients produce more inflammatory cytokines and that gingival crevicular fluid collected from diabetic patients contains higher levels of inflammatory cytokines than that obtained from nondiabetic patients, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. MATERIAL AND METHODS U937 histiocytes cultured in medium containing either normal (5 mM) or high (25 mM) glucose were treated with 100 ng/ml of lipopolysaccharide for 24h. After the treatment, cytokines in the medium and cytokine mRNA in the cells were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbet assay and real-time polymerase chain reaction, respectively. RESULTS In this study, we demonstrated that the pre-exposure of U937 histiocytes to high glucose concentrations markedly increased the lipopolysaccharide-induced secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and the cellular inducible nitric oxide level compared with pre-exposure to normal glucose. Our data also showed that the increased secretion of cytokines was a result of increased mRNA expression. Furthermore, the effects of statin and peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor agonists on high glucose-enhanced secretion of cytokines were determined. The results showed that simvastatin, but not fenofibrate or pioglitazone, inhibited high glucose-enhanced cytokine release. CONCLUSION This study has shown that high glucose concentrations and lipopolysaccharide act synergistically to stimulate the secretion of inflammatory mediators, and that statin is capable of suppressing the high glucose-boosted proinflammatory response. This study therefore delineates a novel mechanism by which hyperglycemia enhances the inflammatory responses of macrophages and suggests that statin may be useful in the treatment of periodontal disease in diabetic patients.

Abstract
The anti-microbial susceptibility and genetic diversity of 65 strains of Streptococcus equi ssp. zooepidemicus (Sez) isolated from mares presenting clinical signs of endometritis was determined by disk agar diffusion and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) methods, respectively. Overall, Sez isolates were susceptible to beta-lactams, enrofloxacin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and gentamicin. These anti-microbials could be recommended as empiric anti-microbial therapy in cases of endometritis caused by Sez. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis typing revealed a great genetic diversity (56 different PFGE macrorestriction profiles) and a low level of genetic relatedness amongst the isolates.

Abstract
Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and fluorescence recovery after pattern photobleaching (FRAPP) were used to study the interaction of low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with micelles of two different surfactants: tetradecyldimethyl aminoxide (C(14)DMAO, zwitterionic) and pentaethylene glycol n-dodecyl monoether (C(12)E(5), non-ionic). By using an amphiphilic fluorescent probe or a fluorescent-labeled PEG molecule, FRAPP experiments allowed to follow the diffusion of the surfactant-polymer complex either by looking at the micelle diffusion or at the polymer diffusion. Experiments performed with both fluorescent probes gave the same diffusion coefficient showing that the micelles and the polymer form a complex in dilute solutions. Similar experiments showed that PEG interacts as well with pentaethylene glycol n-dodecyl monoether (C(12)E(5)).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Clinical nutrition is an activity realized in most of Health Centres of France, Canada, Great Britain and USA. The aim of our work was to determine activity and resources of Nutrition Units of Hospitals in the Community of Castilla y León. MATERIAL AND METHODS A questionnaire was send to all Hospitals of Castilla y León (SACYL); Hospital Universitario Rio Hortega, Hospital Clinico Universitario, Hospital Comarcal de Medina del Campo, Hospital General Yagüe-Divino Vallés (Burgos), Complejo Hospitalario de Le6n, Hospital General de Segovia, Hospital Virgen de Sonsoles de Avila, Hospital Virgen de la Concha de Zamora, Hospital Comarcal de Aranda de Duero, Hospital Comarcal de Miranda, Hospital General de Soria, Hospital Clinico Universitario de Salamanca. RESULTS Nine Centres responded questionnaire (75%). A total of 5 Hospitals had a Unit of Nutrition (55.6%). The results showed an average of 0.37 +/- 0.55 specialists for each 400 beds, 0.87 +/- 0.63 nurses for each 400 beds and 1.91 +/- 2.3 auxiliaries for each 400 beds, with an average of 0.21 +/- 0.41 specialists for each 100,000 habitants, 0.49 +/- 0.36 nurses for each 100,000 habitants and 1.09 +/- 1.2 auxiliaries for each 100,000 habitants. The activity of these Units is demanded by other Units, with an average of 3.2 +/- 3.4 consultations per day. The main diseases of this activity were 33.3% tumoral pathology, 55.6% surgery and 11.1% neurological pathology. Oral supplements were the first intervention tool. Only 3 Centres had a home artificial nutrition consultation. The main diseases of this activity were post surgical patients (33,3%), tumoral pathology (33,3%), neurological pathology (22%) and inflammatory bowel disease (11%). CONCLUSION Resources in Units of Nutrition of Castilla y Leon were limited. However, activity in Hospital an in home is equal than other areas. New actions of Local Administration are necessaries to follow recommendations of Council of Europe.

Abstract
The inbred RLA (Roman Low-Avoidance) and RHA (Roman High-avoidance) rat strains have been psychogenetically selected for rapid (RHA) vs. extremely poor acquisition (RLA) of two-way active avoidance. As a consequence of this selective breeding, RLA animals exhibit a higher level of emotionality that can be observed in many anxiety models. The present study was conducted in order to analyze the performance of female RLA, RHA and Wistar rats in a behavioral test of anxiety that involves the reduction of the magnitude of an expected reward: the negative contrast effect that is obtained in one-way avoidance learning by reducing the time spent in the safe compartment. To this aim, three groups of animals (30-1/RLA, 30-1/RHA and 30-1/W) were trained to avoid an electric foot-shock administered in a "danger" compartment, by running from this compartment to a "safe" compartment. We observed an impairment of the avoidance response when time spent in the safe compartment was reduced from 30 to 1 s, when 30-1/RLA and 30-1/W groups were compared with control groups that were trained with a constant safe time (1-1/RLA and 1-1/W, respectively). We also obtained significant differences between 30-1/RLA and 30-1/RHA groups in the postshift phase. These results indicate that RLA rats respond more negatively to the frustration triggered by the reduction in time spent in the safe compartment, suggesting that animal models based on negative contrast effects can be useful tools for studying the genetic basis of anxiety.
