Abstract
The title compounds were obtained by the reaction of elemental chalcogens E (E = Se, Te) with the respective tetrachlorides ECl4 and the Lewis acidic metal halides ZrCl4, HfCl4, and BiCl3. An alternative way, particularly for the preparation of mixed Se/Te-species, is the enlargement of smaller cationic rings in E4MCl6] (M = Zr, Hf) by adding the respective complementary chalcogen. All reactions were carried out in sealed, evacuated glass ampoules at temperatures between 120 °C and 220 °C, and yielded black crystals of Se8[Bi4Cl14], (Te5.0Se3.0)[HfCl6], (Te5.3 Se2.7)[ZrCl6], (Te6.5Se1.5)[ZrCl6] and Te8[HfCl6], which have been identified by crystal structure analyses. All five compounds contain eight-membered chalcogen rings in an endo-exo-conformation which are isostructural to the known octachalcogen dications E8
2+ (E = S, Se, Te). While in (Te5 .0Se3.0)[HfCl6], (Te5.3Se2 .7 )[ZrCl6], (Te6 .5Se1.5 )[ZrCl6] and Te8[HfCl6] the molecular polycations are surrounded by discrete, octahedral [MCl6]2- counterions, Se4[Bi4Cl14] contains a two-dimensional polymeric anion ([Bi4Cl14]2-)n built of a variety of vertex and edge-sharing BiClx-polyhedra (x = 6, 7). The Bi-Cl bond lengths are spread over a wide range between 250 and 350 pm.

Abstract
In the perioperative period, several potential conflicts between anaesthetists/intensive care specialists and surgeons may exist. They are detrimental to the quality of patient care and to the well-being of the teams. They are a source of medical errors and contribute to burn-out. Patients can become the victims of such conflicts, which deserve ethical reflection. Their resolution through analysis and shared solutions is necessary. This article seeks to analyse these conflicts, taking into account their specificities and constraints. In order to understand this context, it is important to consider the specificities of each group involved and the records of such situations. Several factors can prevent these conflicts, first and foremost the patients themselves and the quality of the care that is provided. Medical deontology aims mainly at preventing and resolving these conflicts. Generally speaking, the quality approach which is increasingly applied in health care institutions (involving declarations of adverse events, morbidity/mortality reviews, benchmarking, analysis and improvement of practices, etc.) also contributes to the prevention and resolution of disagreements. The teaching of communication techniques that begins with the initial training, the evaluation of team behaviours (through simulation training for example), the respect of others' constraints, particularly when it comes to learning, as well as transparency regarding conflicts of interests, are all additional elements of conflict prevention. Lastly, conflicts may at times be caused by deviant behaviours, which must be met with a clear and uncompromising collective and institutional approach. This article concludes by offering a standardised approach for conflict resolution.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate a thermal pulsation treatment compared to a warming eyelid device for the management of meibomian gland dysfunction. METHODS Thirty patients were randomized into two groups: the first had a treatment with MeiboPatch(®) on a daily basis for three months while the second had a single treatment with LipiFlow(®). The evaluation focused on a classical approach but also on a modern approach of the ocular surface (interferometry lipid layer LipiView(®)), analysis of the tear film by Oquas(®) (osmolarity by TearLab(®)) before treatment, then a month and three months later. RESULTS Both treatments proved to be effective with almost three times more functional meibomian glands at 3 months in the LipiFlow group and almost twice more in the MeiboPatch group (P<0.05) but the LipiFlow allows a more rapid improvement at the first month of treatment. Functional scores and classic exploration of the ocular surface except the Schirmer test also undergo a significant improvement in both groups after three months of treatment. CONCLUSION The combination of heat applied to the inner eyelid surface, together with simultaneous expression of the glands, during a single 12-minute treatment shows to be highly effective in treating cases of meibomian gland disease. Whilst results were excellent, and continued lid hygiene remains advised, the benefit of being able to simultaneous address potential compliance issues relating to ongoing treatment is significant. The convenience of a single 12-minute treatment versus an ongoing daily heating regime was shown to be highly desirable and a welcome relief in our patients' busy lifestyles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to examine the association of lay attributions about causes of depression with attitudes and prejudiced behaviour towards people with depression. METHOD Subjects (1631 German-speakers aged 18 and over, randomly selected) were interviewed in two German cities by telephone using a standardized questionnaire. The survey assessed knowledge about depression, stereotypical attitudes and social distance towards persons with depression. RESULTS The results indicate that a majority of the respondents holds predominantly non-pejorative attitudes towards persons with depression. The majority estimated psychosocial causes as being most important for the genesis of depression. Stronger social distance was linked to an estimation of personal causes as relevant. Subgroup differences were apparent with respect to age, sex and reported contact to people with depression. CONCLUSION Improvements in the education of the public about depression should be based on a multifactorial model. Future interventions should promote contact with people with depression and place special emphasis on conveying information in a suitable manner depending on the needs of different target groups.

Abstract
In the present study, a new in vitro model combining the short-term incubation of precision-cut human liver slices with DNA-adduct analysis by the (32)P-postlabelling technique is proposed for investigation of the genotoxic potential of xenobiotics. For method validation, the metabolic turnover of testosterone (TES) and the DNA-adduct inducing potential of 2-aminofluorene (2-AF) were used. Precision-cut human liver slices were prepared from a total of 12 human liver samples which were freshly obtained as parts of resectates from liver surgery. The slices were incubated as submersion cultures with TES and 2-AF for up to 6 h in 12-well tissue culture plates at concentrations of 10-50 and 0.06-28 μM, respectively. Slices recovered from the slicing procedure in the 4 °C cold Krebs-Henseleit buffer as indicated by intracellular potassium concentrations which increased for 2 h and then remained stable until the end of the incubation. TES was extensively metabolized by human liver slices with a similar metabolite pattern as observed in vivo. Almost 90% of the metabolites were conjugates. Major phase-I metabolites were androstendione, 6β-OH-androstendione, 6β-OH-TES, and 15β-OHTES. After incubation with 2-AF, substance related DNA-adducts were detected which increased dose-dependently from 12 to 1146 adducts per 10(9) nucleotides. The adduct pattern consisted of one major adduct spot, A, representing 80-90% of the total adduct level and up to four minor adduct spots, B-E. In summary, the present data demonstrate that precision-cut liver slices are a valuable alternative in vitro system for DNA-adduct determination to screen chemicals for potential genotoxicity in humans.

Abstract
A new transient charge extraction technique is presented, which facilitates simultaneous measurements of mobility and lifetime of photogenerated charge carriers in organic solar cells under real operating conditions. An adaptive field control is implemented keeping the solar cell at open circuit conditions during recombination. The practical benefit of the new technique is demonstrated by determining the mobility-lifetime parameter of solar cells based on PCDTBT:PC(71) BM and P3HT:PC(61) BM.

Abstract
CONTEXT Management of the end of life is a major social issue which was addressed in France by law, on April 22nd 2005. Nevertheless, a debate has emerged within French society about the legalization of euthanasia and/or assisted suicide (E/AS). This issue raises questions for doctors and most especially for anesthetists and intensive care physicians. OBJECTIVE To highlight, dispassionately and without dogmatism, key points taken from the published literature and the experience of countries which have legislated for E/AS. RESULTS The current French law addresses most of the end of life issues an intensive care physician might encounter. It is credited for imposing palliative care when therapies have become senseless and are withdrawn. However, this requirement for palliative care is generally applied too late in the course of a fatal illness. There is a great need for more education and stronger incentives for early action in this area. On the rare occasions when E/AS is requested, either by the patient or their loved-ones, it often results from a failure to consider that treatments have become senseless and conflict with patient's best interest. The implementation of E/AS cannot be reduced to a simple affirmation of the Principle of autonomy. Such procedures present genuine difficulties and the risk of drift. CONCLUSION We deliver a message of prudence and caution. Should we address painful end of life and moral suffering issues, by suppressing the subject, i.e. ending the patient's life, when comprehensive palliative care has not first been fully granted to all patients in need of it ?

Abstract
Four uncemented Symax hip stems were extracted at three weeks and nine, 13 and 32 months, respectively, for reasons other than loosening. The reasons for implant removal were infection in two cases, recurrent dislocation in one and acetabular fracture in one. They were analysed to assess the effect and behaviour of an electrochemically deposited, completely resorbable biomimetic BONIT-hydroxyapatite (HA) coating (proximal part) and a DOTIZE surface treatment (distal part) using qualitative histology, quantitative histomorphometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Early and direct bone-implant bonding with signs of active remodelling of bone and the HA coating were demonstrated by histology and SEM. No loose BONIT-HA particles or delamination of the coating were observed, and there was no inflammation or fibrous interposition at the interface. Histomorphometry showed bone-implant contact varying between 26.5% at three weeks and 83.5% at 13 months at the HA-coated implant surface. The bone density in the area of investigation was between 24.6% at three weeks and 41.1% at 32 months. The DOTIZE surface treatment of the distal part of the stem completely prevented tissue and bone apposition in all cases, thereby optimising proximal stress transfer. The overall features of this implant, in terms of geometry and surface texture, suggest a mechanically stable design with a highly active biomimetic coating, resulting in rapid and extensive osseo-integration, exclusively in the metaphyseal part of the stem. Early remodelling of the HA coating does not seem to have a detrimental effect on short-term bone-implant coupling. There were no adverse effects identified from either the BONIT-HA coating or the DOTIZE surface treatment.

Abstract
People with mental health problems and their families have not been involved as equal partners in decision-making processes on mental health services, and they continue to be at risk of social exclusion and discrimination in all facets of life. In a mental health context, empowerment refers to the level of choice, influence and control that users of mental health services can exercise over events in their lives, and the key to empowerment is the removal of formal or informal barriers and the transformation of power relations between individuals, communities, services and governments. Despite all achievements that have been made over the past decade, there is still a strong need for empowerment of people with mental health problems and their families. The World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe and the European Commission started a three years lasting "Partnership Project on Empowerment in Mental Health" in 2008 which aims to support Member States in the European Region in creating societies in which people with mental health problems are enabled to develop and express their full potential as equal citizens. The WHO Statement on Empowerment in Mental Health has been published, about 100 examples of empowerment practice across Europe have been collected, and indicators for empowerment applicable at national level have been identified. The project outcomes and possibilities for their implementation at country level will be presented.

Abstract
Triclocarban (3,4,4'-trichlorocarbanilide, TCC) is a widely used antibacterial agent in personal care products and is frequently detected as an environmental pollutant in waste waters and surface waters. In this study, we report novel reactive metabolites potentially formed during biotransformation of TCC. The oxidative metabolism of TCC has been predicted using an electrochemical cell coupled online to liquid chromatography and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The electrochemical oxidation unveils the fact that hydroxylated metabolites of TCC may form reactive quinone imines. Moreover, a so-far unknown dechlorinated and hydroxylated TCC metabolite has been identified. The results were confirmed by in vitro studies with human and rat liver microsomes. The reactivity of the newly discovered quinone imines was demonstrated by their covalent binding to glutathione and macromolecules, using β-lactoglobulin A as a model protein. The results regarding the capability of the electrochemical cell to mimic the oxidative metabolism of TCC are discussed. Moreover, the occurrence of reactive metabolites is compared with findings from earlier in vivo studies and their relevance in vivo is argued.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the daily practice of postoperative PCA in Nancy University Hospital, in continuity with a quality program of postoperative pain (POP) care conducted in 2003. TYPE OF STUDY A retrospective audit of patient medical records. MATERIAL AND METHODS A review of all the medical records of consecutive surgical patients managed by PCA over a 5-week period in six surgical services. Criteria studied: Evaluation of hospital means (eight criteria) and of medical and nursing staff practice (16 criteria). A second audit was conducted 6 months after the implementation of quality improvement measures. RESULTS Assessment of the hospital means: temperature chart including pain scores and PCA drug consumption, patient information leaflet, PCA protocol, postoperative pre-filled prescription form (PFPF) for post-anaesthesia care including PCA, and optional training of nurses in postoperative pain management. EVALUATION OF PRACTICES: One hundred and fifty-nine files of a total of 176 patients were analyzed (88%). Improvements noted after 6 months: trace of POP evaluation progressed from 73 to 87%, advance prescription of PCA adjustment increased from 56 to 68% and of the treatment of adverse effects from 54 to 68%, trace of PCA adaptation by attending nurse from 15 to 43%, trace of the administration of the treatment of adverse effects by attending nurse from 24% to 64%, as did the use of PFPF from 59 to 70%. CONCLUSIONS The usefulness of a pre-filled prescription form for post-anaesthesia care including PCA prescription is demonstrated. Quality improvement measures include: poster information and pocket guides on PCA for nurses, training of 3 nurses per service to act as "PCA advisers" who will in turn train their ward colleagues in PCA management and the use of equipment until an acute pain team is established.

Abstract
Biogenic amines are important messenger substances in the central nervous system and in peripheral organs of vertebrates and of invertebrates. The honeybee, Apis mellifera, is excellently suited to uncover the functions of biogenic amines in behaviour, because it has an extensive behavioural repertoire, with a number of biogenic amine receptors characterised in this insect.In the honeybee, the biogenic amines dopamine, octopamine, serotonin and tyramine modulate neuronal functions in various ways. Dopamine and serotonin are present in high concentrations in the bee brain, whereas octopamine and tyramine are less abundant. Octopamine is a key molecule for the control of honeybee behaviour. It generally has an arousing effect and leads to higher sensitivity for sensory inputs, better learning performance and increased foraging behaviour. Tyramine has been suggested to act antagonistically to octopamine, but only few experimental data are available for this amine. Dopamine and serotonin often have antagonistic or inhibitory effects as compared to octopamine.Biogenic amines bind to membrane receptors that primarily belong to the large gene-family of GTP-binding (G) protein coupled receptors. Receptor activation leads to transient changes in concentrations of intracellular second messengers such as cAMP, IP(3) and/or Ca(2+). Although several biogenic amine receptors from the honeybee have been cloned and characterised more recently, many genes still remain to be identified. The availability of the completely sequenced genome of Apis mellifera will contribute substantially to closing this gap.In this review, we will discuss the present knowledge on how biogenic amines and their receptor-mediated cellular responses modulate different behaviours of honeybees including learning processes and division of labour.
