Abstract
Background:About 12% of women worldwide are infected with Human Papillomavirus (HPV), the most frequent cause of cervical cancer (CC) - very prevalent (~ 7,5%) and preventable. National screening efforts are in use in several countries, including Portugal. Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) are at increased risk of HPV infection and CC when compared to the healthy population.Objectives:To evaluate the prevalence of HPV infection and rate of incidence of cervical neoplastic lesions in a SLE patient cohort followed at a university hospital.Methods:Retrospective single-center (35 year long, 463 SLE patient cohort) review of all female SLE patients’ local and online national health care records on HPV vaccination and CC screening.Results:Of the 463 SLE patients, 420 were women (91%), of which 322 had records on of HPV infection or CC developed. Mean patients’ current age was 48 years and all had screening for cervical pathology in the last 3 years. Thirty-three patients (11%) had HPV infection diagnosed at a mean age of 44 years. Twenty-seven (8%) of SLE patients were vaccinated for HPV: 8 (22%) of the infected patients had the vaccine, half after the HPV infection. Despite HPV infection, 49 patients (15%) had developed some cervical lesion, of which 41 (84% of cervical lesion) were suggestive of malignancy, and ultimately CC was diagnosed in 20 women (41%; 6% of total women), with a mean age at diagnosis of 45 years. All CC patients had history of HPV infection, but only 3 women (15%; 0,9% of total women) had been vaccinated against HPV, 2 after the diagnoses of CC and 1 before.Conclusion:In our population the prevalence of HPV was higher than reported for the general population using the World Health Organization database, conforming the higher risk of HPV infection in SLE patients. Introduction
Normal respiratory function is crucial for adequate sleep. Sleep Related Breathing Disorders, namely Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are frequent conditions among a large spectrum of obstructive events in the upper airway which are often linked to significant sleep related oxyhemoglobin dessaturation levels compared to those observed in baseline PSG-oximetry recorded. On the other hand, low baseline oxygen saturation (LBOS) is commonly linked to symptomatic cardiorespiratory disturbances which may adversely impact respiratory outcomes either awake or during sleep. Therefore it is relevant to be aware of the baseline ventilatory status in order to optimize the therapeutic care.
Report of Case
We present an unusual case of a patient with moderate OSA which was successfully controlled with a Mandibular Advancement Oral Appliance (OAm). Despite the control with the OAm, the patient still maintained a nocturnal pattern of hypoventilation/hypoxia. The 53 yo female patient with normal weight/height ratio (BMI=25,2) complaining of non restorative sleep, tiredness, impaired memory, excessive diurnal sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale - ESS=10 and bruxism with a PSG diagnosis of moderate OSA (BaselineO2Sat=94%; IAH=17,4 ev/h; ODI=32,9 ev/h; T90=34,7% of TST) was referred for treatment with a OAm. A PM Type 1 positioner was inserted and titrated until 12 mm of advancement (80% of maximal measured protrusion). Within 6 months follow up and after clinical titration, there was a clear symptomatic and objective improvement with resolution of all major complaints including sleepiness (ESS=5). Titration PSG showed a normalization in all parameters (IAH=1,4 ev/h;ODI=4 ev/h;T90=0,1% of TST). Baseline O2 Sat however remained low (93%) in the titration PSG even though no symptoms or signs of a disorder existed even after discounting for Ph related metabolic changes (normal levels of HCO3)
Conclusion
This is an interesting case of an unusual patient who presented with a LBOS level in the diagnostic PSG. Despite the therapeutic success of the OAm in controlling the sleep related respiratory condition, measured by all otherwise normalized PSG based sleep and respiratory parameters, maintained a LBOS in the titration PSG without any signs or symptoms of disease.

Abstract
The question of whether gold (Au) is more toxic as nanoparticles or in its ionic form remains unclear and controversial. The present work aimed to clarify the effects of 96 h exposure to 4, 80 and 1600 μg·L-1 of 7 nm gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) - (citrate coated (cAuNPs) or polyvinylpyrrolidone coated (PVP-AuNPs)) - and ionic Au (iAu) on gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). Effects at different levels of biological organization (behaviour, neurotransmission, biotransformation, oxidative stress/damage and genotoxicity) were assessed. cAuNPs induced oxidative stress and damage (lipid peroxidation increase), even at 4 μg·L-1, and reduced the ability of S. aurata to swim against a water flow at 1600 μg·L-1. Exposure to cAuNPs induced more adverse effects than exposure to PVP-AuNPs. All tested concentrations of Au (nano or ionic form) induced DNA breaks and cytogenetic damage in erythrocytes of S. aurata. Generally, iAu induced significantly more effects in fish than the nano form, probably associated with the significantly higher accumulation in the fish tissues. No fish mortality was observed following exposure to AuNPs, but mortality was observed in the group exposed to 1600 μg·L-1 of iAu.

Abstract
Despite the widespread use of nanoparticles (NPs), there are still major gaps of knowledge regarding the impact of nanomaterials in the environment and aquatic animals. The present work aimed to study the effects of 7 and 40 nm gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) - citrate and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coated - on the liver proteome of the estuarine/marine fish gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). After 96 h, exposure to AuNP elicited alterations on the abundance of 26 proteins, when compared to the control group. AuNPs differentially affected several metabolic pathways in S. aurata liver cells. Among the affected proteins were those related to cytoskeleton and cell structure, gluconeogenesis, amino acids metabolism and several processes related to protein activity (protein synthesis, catabolism, folding and transport). The increased abundance of proteins associated with energy metabolism (ATP synthase subunit beta), stress response (94 kDa glucose-regulated protein) and cytoskeleton structure (actins and tubulins) may represent the first signs of cellular oxidative stress induced by AuNPs. Although higher gold accumulation was found in the liver of S. aurata exposed to 7 nm PVP-AuNPs, the 7 nm cAuNPs were more bioactive, inducing more effects in liver proteome. Gold accumulated more in the spleen than in the other assessed tissues of S. aurata exposed to AuNPs, highlighting its potential role on the elimination of these NPs.

Abstract
Mechanisms underlying affective and cognitive deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD) remain less studied than motor symptoms. Nucleus accumbens (NAc) is affected in PD and due to its well-known involvement in motivation is an interesting target in this context. Furthermore, PD is frequently asymmetrical, with side-specific deficits aligning with evidences of accumbal laterality. We therefore used a 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) model to study the role of left and right NAc dopamine depletion in a battery of behavioral tasks. 2 months old male rats were used in all experiments. Habitual-based and goal-directed decision-making, impulsivity, anxiety- and depressive-like behavior and motor performance were tested 3 weeks after left (6-OHDA L) or right (6-OHDA R) NAc lesion was induced. Upon contingency degradation, 6-OHDA R decrease their lever press rate less than Sham and 6-OHDA L, indicating an impairment in the shift from habit-based to goal-directed strategies. On the other hand, 6-OHDA L lesions lead to increased rates of premature responding when delays where increased in the variable delay-to-signal test. Importantly, in both paradigms task acquisition was similar between groups. In the same line we found no differences in the amount of sugared pellets eaten when freely available as well as in both general and fine motor behaviors. In conclusion, left and right NAc play distinct roles in the contingency degradation and impulsivity. More studies are needed to understand the mechanisms behind this functional lateralization and its implications for PD patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Bacterial lower respiratory tract infections (BLRTI) may represent serious clinical conditions which can lead to respiratory failure, intensive care unit admission and high hospital costs. The detection of carbapenemase- and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales, as well as meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), has become a major issue, especially in healthcare-associated infections. This study aimed to determine whether molecular assays could detect genes encoding carbapenemases, ESBL and MRSA directly from respiratory samples in order to expedite appropriate therapy and infection control for patients with BLRTI. METHODS The carbapenem-resistant enterobacterales (CRE), ESBL and MRSA/SA ELITe MGB assays were performed directly on 354 respiratory specimens sampled from 318 patients admitted with BLRTI. Molecular results were compared with routine culture-based diagnostics results. RESULTS Positive (PPV) and negative (NPV) predictive values of the CRE ELITe MGB kit were 75.9% [95% confidence interval (CI) 60.3-86.7] and 100%, respectively. PPV and NPV of the ESBL ELITe MGB kit were 80.8% (95% CI 63.6-91.0) and 99.1% (95% CI 96.6-99.8), respectively. PPV and NPV of the MRSA/SA ELITe MGB kit were 91.7% (95% CI 73.7-97.7)/100% and 98.3% (95% CI 89.8-99.3)/96.8% (95% CI 81.6-99.5), respectively. DISCUSSION Validity assessment of molecular assays detecting the main antibiotic resistance genes directly from respiratory samples showed high accuracy compared with culture-based results. Molecular assays detecting the main carbapenemase, ESBL, S. aureus and meticillin resistance encoding genes provide an interesting tool with potential to expedite optimization of antibiotic therapy and infection control practices in patients with BLRTI.

Abstract
Rare-earth orthoferrites and orthomanganites present strong couplings between their structural distortions and physical properties, namely magnetoelectricity, generating interest in predicting and realizing new phases under external parameters, such as hydrostatic pressure. In this regard, we discuss the differences and the similarities of the high-pressure behaviour of the structural distortions arising from anisotropic volume compression. This allows a better understanding of the role played by the octahedra tilt and Jahn-Teller effect as pressure accommodation mechanisms on the stabilization of different crystallographic phases after the insulator to metal structural transition occurring at the critical pressures (Pc) between 35 and 50 GPa.

Abstract
GdMnO3 epitaxial thin films were deposited onto (110)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates by RF magnetron sputtering. The structure, microstructure, dielectric and magnetic properties were investigated in detail. The XRD results revealed that the GdMnO3 thin films exhibit an epitaxial strained orthorhombic symmetry and grow preferably in off-plane (001) orientation, wherein the basal lattice parameters are strained by the substrate lattice. A dielectric relaxation process was ascertained, whose activation energy is sensitive to the magnetic phase transitions, occurring at 41 K and at 20 K, respectively. The canted nature of the low temperature magnetic phase is discussed.

Abstract
The ceramic system La2/3-xLi3xTiO3 presents as an interesting candidate to be used as an electrolyte in solid-state Li-ion batteries. In this paper the electrical response of the ceramic, La2/3-xLi3xTiO3 with x = 0.11 is reported. La2/3-xLi3xTiO3 nanoparticles were synthesized by high energy milling and sintered by Spark Plasma Sintering from an amorphous phase. After sintering, the samples were structurally characterized by XRD and Raman techniques. Measurements of complex impedance varying frequency from 1 Hz to 10 MHz and temperature from 25 °C to 270 °C were performed. The study of DC conductivity allowed us to find the contributions to the total conductivity, grain, and grain boundary of the samples. From the activation energy values, it was possible to determine the conductive mechanism corresponding to the mobility of Li+ ions.

Abstract
Abstract
A 32 year old female patient, with a medical history of an ill-characterized Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension associated with congenital heart disease, lost in the follow up with no medical therapy, attended an emergency department for a gynecological hemorrhage at 16 weeks of pregnancy. Due to high maternity mortality risk, informed consent was obtained, and termination of pregnancy was performed. She was then referred to our pulmonary hypertension center.
At our center she had complains of fatigue with moderate intensity exertion, classified in a class II of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification, but was otherwise asymptomatic, with no history of dyspnea, angina or syncope. There was allusion to a self-limited episode of hemoptysis in the past. On physical examination she had an increased pulmonary component of the second heart sound, continuous heart murmur in left sternal border and no cyanosis (O2 peripheral saturation in the upper and lower limbs of 99% at room air).
The performed echocardiograms (both transthoracic and transesophageal) showed an estimated systolic pulmonary artery pressure of 120 mmHg with severe right ventricular hypertrophy and systolic dysfunction. There was dilatation of the trunk and right pulmonary artery. The left pulmonary artery was not seen.
Biochemical evaluation and viral serologies were unremarkable. The pulmonary function tests and the arterial blood gases were normal.
Cardiac MRI demonstrated the presence of a right aortic arch and a right patent arterial duct. An anomalous origin of the left pulmonary artery from the ascending thoracic aorta could be noted. Associated congenital cardiac defects were excluded.
A right heart catheterization confirmed the presence of severe pulmonary hypertension with mean pulmonary artery pressure of 86 mmHg and Pulmonary vascular resistance of 11 Wood Units. A large persistent arterial duct to the right pulmonary artery was confirmed with persistent left to right shunt. The left pulmonary artery was visualized when injection was performed in the aortic root. Coronary arteries were normally implanted.
The patient was started on Sildenafil and Bosentan (later replaced by Macitentan due to hepatic toxicity). After 3 years of follow up, there was an improvement in symptoms and in the 6 minutes walking test, remaining in a low risk category and on a WHO class I.
This case reports a very rare congenital abnormality identified in an adult patient. Despite the complex anatomy and severe pulmonary hypertension, the patient is reasonably well under medical therapy and close follow up.

Abstract
The post-functionalization of 5,10,15-tris(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)-20-(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin tri-iodide, known as a highly efficient photosensitizer (PS) for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), in the presence of 3- or 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, afforded two new tricationic porphyrins with adequate carboxylic pending groups to be immobilized on chitosan or titanium oxide. The structural characterization of the newly obtained materials confirmed the success of the porphyrin immobilization on the solid supports. The photophysical properties and the antimicrobial photodynamic efficacy of the non-immobilized porphyrins and of the new conjugates were evaluated. The results showed that the position of the carboxyl group in the mercapto units or the absence of these substituents in the porphyrin core could modulate the action of the photosensitizer towards the bioluminescent Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacterium. The antimicrobial activity was also influenced by the interaction between the photosensitizer and the type of support (chitosan or titanium dioxide). The new cationic porphyrins and some of the materials were shown to be very stable in PBS and effective in the photoinactivation of E. coli bacterium. The physicochemical properties of TiO2 allowed the interaction of the PS with its surface, increasing the absorption profile of TiO2, which enables the use of visible light, inactivating the bacteria more efficiently than the corresponding PS immobilized on chitosan.

Abstract
Due to their diverse applications, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are expected to increase of in the environment, although few studies are available on their mode of action in aquatic organisms. The genotoxicity of AuNPs, alone or combined with the human pharmaceutical gemfibrozil (GEM), an environmental contaminant frequently detected in aquatic systems, including in marine ecosystems, was examined using gilthead seabream erythrocytes as a model system. Fish were exposed for 96 h to 4, 80 and 1600 μg L-1 of 40 nm AuNPs with two coatings - citrate or polyvinylpyrrolidone; GEM (150 μg L-1); and a combination of AuNPs and GEM (80 μg L-1 AuNPs + 150 μg L-1 GEM). AuNPs induced DNA damage and increased nuclear abnormalities levels, with coating showing an important role in the toxicity of AuNPs to fish. The combined exposures of AuNPs and GEM produced an antagonistic response, with observed toxic effects in the mixtures being lower than the predicted. The results raise concern about the safety of AuNPs and demonstrate interactions between them and other contaminants.

Abstract
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are found in a wide range of applications and therefore expected to present increasing levels in the environment. There is however limited knowledge concerning the potential toxicity of AuNPs as well as their combined effects with other pollutants. Hence, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of AuNPs alone and combined with the pharmaceutical gemfibrozil (GEM) on different biological responses (behaviour, neurotransmission, biotransformation and oxidative stress) in one of the most consumed fish in southern Europe, the seabream Sparus aurata. Fish were exposed for 96 h to waterborne 40 nm AuNPs with two coatings - citrate and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), alone or combined with GEM. Antioxidant defences were induced in liver and gills upon both AuNPs exposure. Decreased swimming performance (1600 μg.L-1) and oxidative damage in gills (4 and 80 μg.L-1) were observed following exposure to polyvinylpyrrolidone coated gold nanoparticles (PVP-AuNPs). Generally, accumulation of gold in fish tissues and deleterious effects in S. aurata were higher for PVP-AuNPs than for cAuNPs exposures. Although AuNPs and GEM combined effects in gills were generally low, in liver, they were higher than the predicted. The accumulation and effects of AuNPs showed to be dependent on the size, coating, surface charge and aggregation/agglomeration state of nanoparticles. Additionally, it was tissue' specific and dependent on the presence of other contaminants. Although, gold intake by humans is expected to not exceed the estimated tolerable daily intake, it is highly recommended to keep it on track due to the increasing use of AuNPs.

Abstract
Approximately 70% of the terrestrial area is covered with water, but only a small water fraction is compatible with terrestrial life forms. Due to the increment in human consumption, the need for water resources is increasing, and it is estimated that more than 40% of the population worldwide will face water stress/scarcity within the next few decades. Water recycling and reuse may offer the opportunity to expand water resources. For that, the wastewater treatment paradigm should be changed and adequately treated wastewater should be seen as a valuable resource instead of a waste product. It is easily understandable that the exact composition and constituent concentration of wastewater vary according to its different sources (industrial, agricultural, urban usage of water). Consequently, a variety of known and emerging pollutants like heavy metals, antibiotics, pesticides, phthalates, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated compounds and endocrine disruptors have been found in natural water reservoirs, due to the limited effectiveness of conventional wastewater treatment. The conventional approach consists of a combination of physical, chemical and biological processes, aiming at the removal of large sediments such as heavier solids, scum and grease and of organic content in order to avoid the growth of microorganisms and eutrophication of the receiving water bodies. However, this approach is not sufficient to reduce the chemical pollutants and much less the emerging chemical pollutants. In this review, after some considerations concerning chemical pollutants and the problematic efficiency of their removal by conventional methods, an update is presented on the successes and challenges of novel approaches for wastewater remediation based on advanced oxidation processes. An insight into wastewater remediation involving the photodynamic approach mediated by tetrapyrrolic derivatives will be underlined.

Abstract
Direct assembling of N-graphene, i.e. nitrogen doped graphene, in a controllable manner was achieved using microwave plasmas at atmospheric pressure conditions. The synthesis is accomplished via a single step using ethanol and ammonia as carbon and nitrogen precursors. Tailoring of the high-energy density plasma environment results in a selective synthesis of N-graphene (~0.4% doping level) in a narrow range of externally controlled operational conditions, i.e. precursor and background gas fluxes, plasma reactor design and microwave power. Applying infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to the flow of free-standing sheets in the post-plasma zone carries out changes in the percentage of sp2, the N doping type and the oxygen functionalities. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the relative extension of the graphene sheets π-system and the type of nitrogen chemical functions present in the lattice structure. Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy were applied to determine morphological and structural characteristics of the sheets. Optical emission and FT-IR spectroscopy were applied for characterization of the high-energy density plasma environment and outlet gas stream. Electrochemical measurements were also performed to elucidate the electrochemical behavior of NG for supercapacitor applications.

Abstract
Abstract Acute mesenteric ischaemia (AMI) is an uncommon cause of acute hospital admission with high mortality rates (50–90%) that requires early diagnosis and treatment. With the increase in average life expectancy, AMI represents one of the most threatening abdominal conditions in elderly patients. Untreated, AMI will cause mesenteric infarction, intestinal necrosis, an overwhelming inflammatory response and death. Early intervention can reverse this process leading to a full recovery, but the diagnosis of AMI is difficult. The failure to recognise AMI before intestinal necrosis has developed is responsible for the high mortality of the disease. Unfortunately, common CT findings in bowel ischaemia are not specific. Therefore, it is often a combination of nonspecific clinical, laboratory and radiological findings that helps most in the correct interpretation of CT findings. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the anatomy, physiology of mesenteric perfusion and discussions of causes, pathogenesis and CT findings in various types of acute bowel ischaemia. Familiarity with various imaging features of mesenteric injury is essential to make a timely diagnosis that will lead to improved patient outcomes. Teaching Points • AMI is a potentially life-threatening disorder whose prognosis depends on early recognition, accurate diagnosis and timely intervention. • Arterial inflow occlusion due to thrombosis or embolisation is the most common cause of AMI. • Four aetiological types of AMI have been associated with different characteristics and risk factors (EAMI, TAMI, VAMI and NOMI). • Physical examination and laboratory findings are not sensitive or specific for diagnosing AMI; therefore, MDCT is still the first-line imaging method in suspected AMI. • Although a number of scoring systems for prognosis have been proposed, these have not been validated in large-scale studies.
