Abstract
Direct CP violation in the b-->sgamma process is a sensitive probe of physics beyond the standard model. We report a measurement of the CP asymmetry in B-->X(s)gamma, where the hadronic recoil system X(s) is reconstructed using a pseudoreconstruction technique. In this approach there is negligible contamination from b-->dgamma decays, which are expected to have a much larger CP asymmetry. We find A(CP)=0.002+/-0.050(stat)+/-0.030(syst) for B-->X(s)gamma events having recoil mass smaller than 2.1 GeV/c(2). The analysis is based on a data sample of 140 fb(-1) recorded at the upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) storage ring.

Abstract
We report the first observation of CP violation in B0-->pi(+)pi(-) decays based on 152x10(6) gamma (4S)-->BB decays collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We reconstruct a B0-->pi(+)pi(-) CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying B meson from its decay products. From the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we obtain A(pipi)=+0.58+/-0.15(stat)+/-0.07(syst) and S(pipi)=-1.00+/-0.21(stat)+/-0.07(syst). We rule out the CP-conserving case, A(pipi)=S(pipi)=0, at a level of 5.2 standard deviations. We also find evidence for direct CP violation with a significance at or greater than 3.2 standard deviations for any S(pipi) value.

Abstract
An accessory hepatic vein (AHV) after a Fontan-type operation will result in progressive desaturation if left intact. We report a case in which intraoperative color Doppler ultrasonography revealed the absence of AHV flow and reversed portal vein flow when the AHV was clamped, suggesting that simple ligation of the AHV would lead to liver dysfunction in the area affected. Based on the results of the ultrasonography evaluations, diversion of the AHV into the pulmonary circulation was performed without cardiopulmonary bypass, and the clinical outcome has been favorable.

Abstract
Oxidative stress has been shown to play pivotal roles in the onset of inflammatory bowel disease. We evaluated the effects of a dietary anti-oxidant, Antioxidant Biofactor (AOB), a processed grain food, on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. Female ICR mice were fed a diet containing 0.1% or 1% AOB for 2 weeks, during which they were given 5% DSS in drinking water for the latter 1 week to induce colitis. A diet containing 1% AOB, but not that with 0.1% AOB, attenuated DSS-induced body weight loss and colon shortening (each, P < 0.05), and dramatically improved colitis histologic scores. In addition, DSS-induced increases in colonic mucosal IL-1beta, but not TNF-alpha, protein levels were significantly abrogated in 1% AOB-fed mice (P < 0.05). Further, 1% dietary AOB abolished the expression of IL-1beta mRNA levels in colonic mucosa (P < 0.01). Our results suggest that AOB is effective for the prevention of DSS-induced colitis in mice.

Abstract
Research of the effect of space environment on an ecosystem consisting of plants and animals is essential when they are to be positively used in space. Although there have been experiments on various organisms under space environment in the past, they mainly studied the effect of space environment on an individual organism or a single species. Microcosm is drawing attention as an experimental material of an ecosystem consisting of multiple species. The object in this research is to understand the nature of this network system called ecosystem. Thus, a mixed microorganism culturing system consisting of three types of microorganisms which form a minimum food chain system as a closed ecosystem (chlorella as the producer, bacteria as the decomposer, and rotifer as the consumer) was taken for the subject, on which to research the universal characteristics of ecosystems. From the results of experiments under the terrestrial environment, formation of colonies, which is an ecological structure, has been observed at its mature stage. The organisms form an optimal substance circulation system. Therefore, formation of colonies in simulation models is important. Many attempts have been made to create ecosystem models. For example, the Lotka-Volterra model forms a simultaneous equation with the differential equation expressing predator and prey relationship and many numerical calculations have been conducted on various ecosystems based on expanded L-V models. Conventionally, these top-down methods have been used. However, since this method only describes the average concentration of organisms that are distributed uniformly throughout the system and cannot express the spatial structure of the system, it was difficult to express ecosystem structures like colonies and density distributions. In actual ecosystems, there is heterogeneity in the number of individuals and in substance density, and this is thought to have great significance in ecosystems. Consequently, an individual-based model was used that applies rules to predator-prey relationship, suppression, production, self suppression, etc., of each species. It enabled the emergence of the overall system only by its local rules, and it was possible to reproduce colony generation. In addition, the transition and the ratio of populations for each species match well with experimental results.

Abstract
We present an improved measurement of CP-violation parameters in B0-->phiK(0)(S), K(+)K(-)K(0)(S), and eta(')K(0)(S) decays based on a 140 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. One neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in one of the specified decay channels, and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its decay products. CP-violation parameters for each of the three modes are obtained from the asymmetries in the distributions of the proper-time intervals between the two B decays. We find that the observed CP asymmetry in the B-->phiK(0)(S) decay differs from the standard model (SM) expectation by 3.5 standard deviations, while the other cases are consistent with the SM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the rheumatoid arthritis (RA) diagnostic performances of anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody (anti-CCP) and antifilaggrin antibody (AFA) in comparison with RF and matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3). METHODS We used a second generation enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit for the detection of anti-CCP. We constructed recombinant human filaggrin, which was citrullinated in vitro by human peptidylarginine deiminase, and subsequently used it as the coating antigen for AFA-ELISA. A total of 549 RA patients and 208 other rheumatic disease patients were included in the study. RESULTS The specificities of anti-CCP (88.9%) and AFA (94.7%) were superior to those of RF (81.7%) and MMP-3 (49.5%). The sensitivity of anti-CCP (87.6%) was superior to all others. However, the sensitivity of AFA (68.7%) was inferior to those of RF (69.8%) and MMP-3 (75.7%). Furthermore, receiver operating characteristic curves of anti-CCP and AFA passed closer to the upper left corner than those of RF and MMP-3, and the areas under the curves (AUC) of AFA and anti-CCP were significantly larger. In addition, the AUC of anti-CCP was significantly larger than that of AFA. CONCLUSION ELISA detection of antibodies to citrullinated antigens, especially a second generation anti-CCP, showed higher discriminative ability than other assays, including RF, and would be useful to aid the diagnosis of RA in clinical practice.

Abstract
Poly-L-lysine(pL) was chemically modified based on two essential features which we recently reported and subjected to the gene-transfer experiment in vitro. Introduction of 25 mol% serine residue to pL slightly enhanced the gene expression level, while trimethylation of epsilon-ammonium groups of lysine did not. Only when pL was modified in both way, giving N2-trimethyl poly(lysine-co-serine), markedly enhanced gene expression was observed. The cellular uptake and localization of DNA in the cells were similar for each cationic polypeptide. DNA forming complex with the polypeptides containing serine residue was found to be well transcribed in in vitro transcription/translation system, suggesting the hydrophilic nature may allow polypeptide/DNA complexes to be recognized by the transcriptional factors and lead the subsequent effective gene expression.

Abstract
Properties of 2'-O-methyloligoribonucleotides containing two consecutive 2'-O-(1-pyrenylmethyl)uridine were investigated as a fluorescent probe to search the single strand regions of RNA. The bis-pyrene-labeled 2'-O-methyloligoribonucleotide (OMUpy2) induced the formation of pyrene dimer upon hybridization with the complementary oligoribonucleotides and showed remarkable appearance of broad structureless fluorescence at 480 nm. Contrarily, when OMUpy2 was hybridized with the complementary oligodeoxyribonucleotides, such enhancement of fluorescence was scarcely observed. When various OMUpy2 were applied to E. coli 5S-rRNA, the fluorescence intensity at 480 nm was varied in a sequence specific manner.

Abstract
Various cationic polypeptides of linear or highly branched structures were synthesized by introducing tertiary or quaternary ammonium groups and hydroxyl groups to poly(L-lysine) (PL) or polyamideamine (PAMAM) dendrimers. These polycations were mixed with plasmid DNA to form polyplexes and subjected to in vitro gene introduction experiment. The transient gene expression was greatly affected by the side groups of PL derivatives or the surface cation charge density of PAMAM dendrimers. This difference in gene expression was found to result from two independent factors as follows: one is the cellular uptake of the polyplexes and the other is the compaction of the polyplexes. Lower charge density of PAMAM dendrimers suppressed the polyplex formation and cellular uptake, resulting the lower gene expression. Only the polycations that form polyplexes compacted at an adequate extent lead an effective gene expression, suggesting that the physicochemical properties of the polyplexes defined by the chemical structures of the polycations play an important role in the effective gene transfer.

Abstract
Evaluation of the folded structure of E.coli 16S-rRNA was performed using 5'-Ru(II) complex labeled oligodeoxyribonucleotide (Ru-probe) as the probe. This probe could evaluate the dynamic manner of the binding site of Ru-probe by using the time-resolved luminescence anisotropy technique. It was found that the rotational manner of Ru-probe in the presence of 16S-rRNA was markedly dependent on the oligonucleotide sequence, indicating that the microenvironments around the Ru-probes were largely different.

Abstract
The characteristics of the bacterial community structure and population dynamics for phosphorus removal in activated sludge were investigated using laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) activated sludge processes fed with four different carbon sources. Phosphorus removal activity, quinone profile of the activated sludge and isolated bacterial strains were monitored. An enhanced phosphorus removal activity was accompanied by the increase in ubiquinone-9 (Q-9). The relationships between phosphorus removal activity and Q-9 contents of the isolated bacterial strains were dependent neither on the organic substrates nor on the species of isolated bacterial strains. The enhanced phosphorus removal capability of activated sludge seemed to be due to the increase in the populations of bacteria with activity of phosphorus removal, i.e. species succession of bacteria in activated sludge ecosystems, rather than the increase in the phosphorus removal capability of phosphorus removal bacteria. Not only Acinetobacter but also Pseudomonas identified from isolated strains were regarded as representative polyphosphates-accumulating organisms and predominant species to the whole of bacterial population in activated sludge for phosphorus removal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Mutations of the human transforming growth factor beta induced gene (TGFBI) were reported to cause lattice corneal dystrophy (LCD) in various nationalities. This study analysed the TGFBI gene in Vietnamese people with LCD. METHODS 13 unrelated families, including 34 patients and 21 unaffected members were examined. 50 normal Vietnamese people served as controls. Blood samples were collected. Genomic DNA was extracted from leucocytes. Analysis of TGFBI gene was performed using the polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing. Corneal buttons were studied histopathologically. RESULTS Two clinically distinguishable forms of LCD were revealed: one was typical of LCDI; the other was characterised by the late onset, thick lattice lines, and asymmetry between two eyes. Sequencing of the TGFBI gene revealed R124C mutation in three families and H626R mutation in 10 families. Congo red staining of the H626R-LCD cornea showed amyloid deposits in the subepithelial and stromal layers. CONCLUSIONS R124C and H626R mutations of TGFBI gene caused LCD in Vietnamese people. R124C, a common cause of LCDI in many nationalities, was relatively rare, whereas H626R reported in several white people but not yet in Asians was most common (>75%) in Vietnamese people. Since the phenotype caused by H626R represents a new variant intermediate between LCDI and LCDIIIA, we proposed to consider it as LCD type IIIB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The bispectral index (BIS) may indicate changes in cerebral activity when the cerebral circulation is affected by acute hypotension. METHODS We measured BIS and cerebral haemoglobin saturation (Sr(O(2))) by near-infrared spectroscopy in 10 children undergoing cardiac surgery. RESULTS We noted 14 episodes of simultaneous decreases in Sr(O(2)) and BIS during acute hypotension in five children. An acute decrease in BIS, which coincided with a decrease in Sr(O(2)) suggesting a reduction in cerebral blood flow, was associated with acute slowing of the raw EEG waveforms. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that an acute decrease in BIS during acute hypotension indicates cerebral hypoperfusion, and that cerebral hypoperfusion caused by hypotension may occur frequently during paediatric cardiac surgery.

Abstract
We report studies of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay B+/--->D(CP)K+/-, where D(CP) denotes CP eigenstates of the D0-D0; system. The analysis is based on a 29.1 fb(-1) sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) storage ring. We measure ratios of branching fractions, relative to Cabibbo-favored B+/--->D(CP)pi(+/-), of B(B--->D1K-)/B(B--->D1pi(-))=0.125+/-0.036+/-0.010 and B(B--->D2K-)/B(B--->D2pi(-))=0.119+/-0.028+/-0.006; the index 1 (2) denotes the CP=+1 (-1) eigenstate. We also extract the partial rate asymmetries for B+/--->D(CP)K+/-, finding A(1)=0.29+/-0.26+/-0.05 and A(2)=-0.22+/-0.24+/-0.04.

Abstract
Filamentous fungi were isolated from antemortem sputum and an autopsy fungus ball of the lung in a case of aspergilloma. Both of the isolates were analyzed for the sequences of species or strain-specific nuclear ribosomal DNA (partial 28S and ITS1 regions), and were identified as Aspergillus fumigatus. The molecular biological technique saved time and is thought to be a powerful tool in the accurate diagnosis of pulmonary fungal infection to assure effective treatment.

Abstract
Hyperthyroidism is known to affect multiple organ functions, and thyroid hormone has been known to improve myocardial function in a failing heart. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the functional and metabolic effects of thyroid hormone on myocardium in a rat model exposed to long-term excess thyroid hormone, particularly focusing on the SR Ca(2+)-ATPase (SERCA2) function. 3,5,3'-Triiodo-L-thyronine (T3), or the vehicle, was subcutaneously given for 4 weeks (T3 and control [C] group). Bolus I.V. Thapsigargin (TG) was used to test the SERCA2 function (C-TG and T3-TG) in Langendorff perfused heart. Myocardial functions such as LV-developed pressure (LVDP; mmHg), +/- dP/dt (mmHg/s), tau (ms), and oxygen consumption (MVO(2); ml/min/g wt) were measured. SERCA2 and GLUT4 protein level were also evaluated by Western immunoblotting. Left ventricle to body weight (LV/BW) ratio was significantly higher in the T3 group. Both negative dP/dt and tau were significantly decreased by TG. It is interesting that the decrement of negative dP/dt and tau attained by TG was significantly larger in the hyperthyroid group (T3-TG) than in a normal heart (C-TG). SERCA2 and GLUT4 protein levels were not significantly different between control and the T3 group. We conclude that prolonged exposure to thyroid hormone causes hypertrophy of the myocardium and an augmentation of the SR Ca(2+) ATPase activity. Care must be taken in hyperthyroid heart during the ischemia-reperfusion process where the SRECA2 function is inhibited.

Abstract
We report the first observation of a B meson decay that is not accessible by a direct spectator process. The channel B(0)-->D(+)(s)K- is found in a sample of 85 x 10(6) BB; events, collected with the Belle detector at KEKB, with a branching fraction B(B(0)-->D(+)(s)K-)=(4.6(+1.2)(-1.1)+/-1.3) x 10(-5). We also obtain evidence for the B0-->D(+)(s)pi(-) decay with branching fraction B(B0-->D(+)(s)pi(-))=(2.4(+1.0)(-0.8)+/-0.7) x 10(-5). This value may be used to extract a model-dependent value of |V(ub)|.

Abstract
We report the first observation of the charmless two-body mode B+/--->omegaK+/- decay, and a new measurement of the branching fraction for the B+/--->omegapi(+/-) decay. The measured branching fractions are B(B+/--->omegaK+/-)=(9.2(+2.6)(-2.3)+/-1.0)x10(-6) and B(B+/--->omegapi(+/-))=(4.2(+2.0)(-1.8)+/-0.5)x10(-6). We also measure the partial rate asymmetry of B+/--->omegaK+/- decays and obtain A(CP)=-0.21+/-0.28+/-0.03. The results are based on a data sample of 29.4 fb(-1) collected on the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider.

Abstract
We successfully resected vegetation of infectious endocarditis in right ventricular outflow tract using a video-assisted cardioscopy without ventriculotomy. Video-assisted cardioscopy provided clear and precise visualization of vegetation on the anterior wall of right ventricular outflow. This technique is effective to visualize remote intra-cardiac structures, and to facilitate repairs, while avoiding the need for extended cardiac incisions.

Abstract
We present a measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in B0-->pi(+)pi(-) decays based on a 41.8 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We fully reconstruct one neutral B meson as a B0-->pi(+)pi(-) CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying B meson from its decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we obtain the CP-violating asymmetry parameters S(pipi)=-1.21(+0.38)(-0.27)(stat)+0.16-0.13(syst) and A(pipi)=+0.94(+0.25)(-0.31)(stat)+/-0.09(syst).

Abstract
We report a measurement of the D0-D macro(0) mixing parameter y(CP) using 23.4 fb(-1) of data collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB. y(CP) is measured from the lifetime difference of D0 mesons decaying into the K(-)pi(+) state and the CP-even eigenstate K(-)K(+). We find y(CP) = (-0.5+/-1.0(+0.7)(-0.8))x10(-2), where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic, corresponding to a 95% confidence interval -0.030<y(CP)<0.020.

Abstract
Massive systemic-to-hepatic venous collaterals developed in a 8-year-old boy with left isomerism and azygos connection of the inferior vena cava who had undergone total cavopulmonary shunt leaving the hepatic vein connected to the common atrium 5 years previously. A hepatic vein-to-azygos vein connection via an autologous pericardial roll successfully ameliorated cyanosis and physical activity. Hepatic vein-to-azygos vein connection is technically easy and is favorable in providing balanced distribution of hepatic venous blood to both lungs. We recommend this technique as an effective alternative to hepatic vein-to-pulmonary artery connection in patients developing collateral vessels after total cavopulmonary shunt.

Abstract
Species identification of genus Malassezia is important in epidemiological and etiological studies, however, is difficult by the conventional system. A specific and rapid identification system based on sequences of internal transcribed spacer 1 of ribosomal DNA has therefore been developed. Using this system, we could identify two or more species mixed in the clinical samples.
